I did a breakdown of Jonathan Alvarez over a month ago but our editor did not get a chance to post it. Last week Jonathan was announced 1st Team All-District in 5A Texas Football. That is no small things. I figured this was as good a time as any to give our readers my thoughts on Jonathan.
The tale of the tape on Jonathan is that he’s 6’3″ 301. Jonathan was playing offensive tackle until just recently. So when you look at it that way it explains why the corporate recruiting services have him rated a little lower. At Center and/or Guard however, Jonathan has ideal size. J. Cooper, the offensive guard out of North Carolina went early in the first round, and is the same size as young Mr. Alvarez. All those things aside, when I turn on the tape for Jonathan, there’s not a lot about his game that I don’t like. The thing that I like the most about his game is that he seems to finish on every play. He’s nasty, quick, strong and just loves hitting people. He’s acutely aware of protections as I’ve seen him peel back off of his side and pick up a blitzer from the other. That shows me he cares. From playing Tackle he shows versatility and a willingness to study tape and learn the entire offense. From watching him he looks like the guy on the line everybody asks what their job is. When I played I was often the guy who knew everyones job as well. I took that as a responsibility and a duty. Don’t get me wrong, I was never as talented as Jonathan. He’s got all the tools to do what needs to be done to get to the next level and beyond. Jonathan if you’re out there I want you to know that the only people who will tell you that you can’t do something are the ones who don’t have the balls to go do it themselves. You keep working. You keep finishing. You keep studying. You keep hustling. Whatever you do son, don’t lose that nasty. OU needs guys like Jonathan and Alex Dalton to come in and help Coach B restore the NASTY in Norman.
I can see already that Jonathan had a good solid offseason, and is continuing to develop. His early film shows that he’s a little smoother in his movement, and that he’s maturing physically. He’s playing at a top level in Texas hs ball, so you know that he’s getting good teaching at Horn. Jonathan is exactly the kind of kid we need, and to me, he’s a solid four star at the center or guard spot. With enough work he can be All-conference if not more. I love his movement, his hustle, power and tenacity. I’m very excited about what he’s bringing to Norman, and you Sooner fans should be too.

“I need some more NASTY !!”
no doubt! It’s been a breath of fresh air having more consistency in the run game this year.
is this a 2015 kid? and do you know if there’s any youtube video of him?
2014.
Greg, I wish there were more public film, but we’re trying to get some to put up

What are your thoughts on Darlington? Wish that he would have shirted this year, but I don’t believe he did.
Really like Ty. I’d like to see him get up to 305 or 310. He’s currently listed at 288. The guy is very very strong, and I think this offseason will do him a lot of good putting on weight. I think he moves well in space, and fits right in with guys like Jonathan and Alex Dalton,
Darlington will be good, the son of a football coach. He was valedictorian at his high school in Florida. Very smart like Ikard.
Word…
I mentioned in another thread how much I liked TY. Still a little concerned on the OL for next year, what is your opinion?
I think Farniok and Thompson will be back, but I still feel that a JUCO add would be good to bridge the gap between now and the (EPIC) 2015 class and also for depth. This is the only weakness I see in a team that should be the favorite going in next season.
Huh? OU’s Oline might be as good or even better. They return 4 starters. Kasatati Sp., Williamson, Shead and Tyrus. Capable players in Darlington, Savage etc.. With another year under Coach B. I have no worries about what this unit could be.
Agreed. I think they’ve started to show how good they can be THIS year. Next year they should be beasts along that front.
Well I think you’re in good shape next year.
LT: Thompson
LG: Nila
C: Darlington
RG: Evans
RT: Williams
Key Depth:
Farniok
St. John
Savage
Feo
Marrs
Who knows how we’ll close out the class, because a guy like Jovan Pruitt at Tackle and Jordan Sims at guard provides instant depth. If we can be healthy next year across the front, you’ve got the ability to redshirt Dalton and Alvarez which would be huge.
We can check around on Ivey for you.
thanks!
Thanks for the clarification guys. looks like we are set
My bad. for some reason I thought Shead was a Jr.. I still think they have a chance to be a really good. Another year with Coach B for one.
No worries man. Hopefully he can get healthy.
Hopefully Shead can get healthy and be in the mix.
Absolutely. Pre-injury he was our best offensive lineman hands down.
Thanks Buddy.

I think Darlingon did redshirt this year, should be a RS Sophomore next year which will be very nice to have an awesome center for 3 years
That is good news. I could have sworn he played early, but did not see him from that point on. It makes sense that he did shirt.
Thought Darlington came in earlier in the year for Ikard, could be wrong though.
That is exactly what I saw.
Thanks JY been waiting on this evaluation awhile, at first I never really liked this commit I kinda put him up with the Kyle marrs type early offer linemen I didn’t understand. Think the kid is probably Taylor made for center position and growing on me. What’s the big diff between him and Dalton?
Dalton may have just a bit of a bigger frame. He’s 6’4″ 280, while Jonathan’s 6’3″ 300. Just different body types. I know that they want Alex to play center, while Jonathan’s a guard, and may provide depth at center if needed. They both have a similar playing style in that they both play very, very hard, and are very aggressive. It’ll be one of the bigger, stronger, nastier interiors we’ve had around here in a while once they develop. Then just a year later you have Jalin Barnett(hopefully) and Wariboko coming in too as well as Bobby Evans. I really like how coach B is building this o line.
No doubt there coach B has gotten me excited about what the future holds up front
