Good News on the War Daddy, Jordan Phillips

2-gap nose guards are hard to find. Good ones are even harder to find. 1st round-type NGs are nearly impossible to find. But Oklahoma has one of those players in Jordan Phillips. He’s what they call a “war daddy”.

As you all know, Jordan had season-ending back surgery recently. Back surgery is always one of those things that concerns people because you never know how a player will return from something like that, if at all.

We just found out that apparently the reason Oklahoma has been a bit more selective and patient in accepting players at the NG position is they feel very good about how Jordan is coming along. We all heard Coach Stoops say the surgery was successful but there was a lot of uncertainty as to how he’s coming along. Apparently the coaches are optimistic. And that is something very exciting for Jordan, OU and OU fans.

If the coaches optimism turns out to be correct and Jordan can indeed play next season; imagine now having Jordan, Striker and Devante Bond…on the field…at the same time…on 3rd down. It wouldn’t even be fair.

Our prayers continue to be with Jordan as he works towards a full recovery and we hope that the reasons for optimism only increase.

Been a tough day, but that report makes mine. Thanks Guys.

Great news for that young man! Losing him and Corey in the middle of that defense was killer. Look forward to seeing him back out there dominating that a gap.

Would love to know what exactly it was. After my surgery it’s fine, but I’m not even attempting anything rough. I remember hearing it might be something genetic, not sure what that could mean, but hopefully something simple to fix & less invasive.
Just NO MORE BACKFLIPS! I’m sure he’ll be on strict orders for that. The good news about many back surgeries is recovery time can be so much less, mine was instantly good, the only thing taking healing time was the incision itself. Heck, I was walking to meet kid at school just hours after surgery with no pain….which felt awesome after enduring so much.
Thanks for info, good to hear.

      You got it bud!

Oh, I didn’t think you could find out something like that, from behind the iron curtain. It was more an expression of curiosity. Guess it doesn’t matter, it either works or not 🙂

        • Super K says:

Oh we already know what the back issue was but it wouldn’t be our place to divulge something like that. I was saying “you got it bud” in response to your “thanks for the info” lol 🙂

Is this something he can 100% recover from, or is it similar to Granger, where he can play but obvious he isn’t the same kind of player?

          • Super K says:

The coaches definitely seem confident. So we’ll have to see. The fact that they are, at least in some way, altering their recruiting strategy based on that is promising.

If Jordan returns to form, then NG is in great shape with Jordan Wade looking better every week and Torrea Peterson playing better as well.
Charles Walker redshirted but would seem likely to be able to give minutes there as well.
I wonder if Matt Romar might move to DE?
    And then there’s Quincy Russell.

    • Super K says:

We’re going to find out where Walker and Romar are going to play. We’ll report back when we know. Can probably find out next week. But I suspect a lot of it depends on how their bodies grow. I would have guessed DE on both based on their athleticism and size.
And you’re dead on Atlanta – if J. Phillips is doing as good we think then the depth at NG is going to be great next year.

      • Rashad See says:

Any word on why Quincy Russell has failed to see the field other then those two early games?

        • AlexOU says:

I’d also love to see your guys impression of Jordan Wades progression. Seems pretty good, about where Phillips was this time last year.

  • JD says:

That is awesome news! Throw Tapper in there and it’s down right criminal!

    • JY says:

Especially with Bond at the Jack position, and Striker moving around all over the place. This will allow us to create multiple points of pressure. Phillips collapsing the pocket with Tapper and Bond opposite each other and Striker being the joker.

  • Travis Coyle says:

Hope he heals up fast. Seems like a good kid.

  • Anonymouse says:

Complete speculation but I’m willing to bet it was something along the lines of a condition known as pars defect. If that is the case, his recovery should go very smoothly and he will be able to come back at full force. I had the condition in high school and was told it had a genetic origin. I also would have required surgery if I wanted to further my playing career.
