100 Days to Football Time in Oklahoma: #56 Creed Humphrey

The Path to Norman

Humphrey had offers from many top programs; Alabama, Texas A&M, Oklahoma, and others all wanted him to play for their programs. OU and Humphrey circled each other for a while, with Humphrey taking two visits to Norman in early June, 2016. Additionally, with a brother at OU, growing up in an OU household, and being an in-state player, Oklahoma seemed to have a high chance of landing the lineman. However, the Shawnee, Oklahoma product decided that Texas A&M was the right place for him in the summer of 2016. It looked like OU might move on. Then, about a month later, Humphrey realized that he wanted to be in Norman instead. TFB’s own JY marked Creed as one of his favorite players in the class, and had this eval of the lineman: TFB: Creed Humphrey Eval.

Career So Far

Within a month of being on campus, TFB started to hear great things about Humphrey.

‘I spoke to a source about how Creed Humphrey is fairing early on. I’m told Humphrey is really strong, “he out benched all the starters”. Source all noted, “he seems like he’s eager to play. Wren seemed to take notice because he (Wren) is trying to get some extra work in”.

You’ve heard JY talk about the center of the OL being the tip of the sphere but the Sooners haven’t had a guy like that in a while. Perhaps Humphrey will be. He’s obviously bigger than the guys OU has had in recent years and according to our sources, he’s very strong.’

The praise didn’t stop there:

‘We mentioned in winter workouts that the early word on Creed Humphrey is he was looking very good. That praise has only continued into the spring. Multiple sources have raved about Humphrey. We are told the OU staff is really impressed with Creed.

One source said about Humphrey, “he’s a man among boys. Don’t be surprised if he eventually unseats Wren”.

Whether Humphrey can take Wren’s spot our not remains to be seen but if he’s getting that kind of praise this early in the game, the Sooners are very secure at that center position.’

As we now know, Creed didn’t manage to unseat Wren. He took a redshirt year in 2017 and will be ready for action this year.

Highlights

2018 Season

In JY’s OL Position Preview, he had this to say about Creed:

6’5″ 319 R-Fr. Coach B’s O line blueprint has now come to fruition. He now has his jumbo center in Humphrey.  Coaches and players alike have raved about how quickly Creed picked up the offense. This spring will be pivotal in Creed’s bid to win the spot. Coach B has shown that he likes to go with veterans and guys he trusts the most. Alvarez has been a starter for him before. Still, he’s shown he’s not afraid to shuffle the lineup if things aren’t quite clicking. See after the 2015 Texas game and after the Houston & Ohio State games in 2016.  This will be one of the more fun matchups to watch to see who will win.

Humphrey will have to battle with Alvarez for the starting nod, but the opportunity is certainly there for the talented Oklahoman to jump to the top of the depth chart.
