100 Days to Football Time in Oklahoma: #4 Trey Sermon

The Path to Norman

The state of Georgia is often a difficult place for schools outside the SEC to recruit in; the Sooners decided that didn’t matter. A big Adrian Peterson fan, Trey Sermon was high on OU and got close to Coach Jay Boulware early in the recruitment process. His high school coaches really liked the program and Coach Boulware as well. That resulted in an early commitment to the Sooners in April, 2016. Sermon bonded with SS17, visited often, and was an early enrollee. That spring, TFB posted a spotlight on the talented back: TFB Sermon Spotlight.

Career so Far

While praise for freshman in the offseason is a great thing, it can sometimes be misleading or just lip service. However, it didn’t take long to figure out that Trey was going to preach early and often. After a promising season opener against, Sermon came ready to play against Ohio State. The running back had a very good game and had two huge plays in a pivotal fourth quarter touchdown drive.

Sermon didn’t stop there. Even though the dominance of Rodney Anderson meant fewer snaps for everyone else later in the season, Trey Sermon was a huge part of the OU offense as a true freshman. The talented back can do it all, ending up with 744 yards rushing on 6.1 ypc, helping in the receiving game, and even completing a pass against Texas. He was honored for the season with an All-Big 12 Honorable Mention for Offensive Freshman of the Year.

2018 saw Sermon continue his bruising style of running, regularly dishing out trucks and stiff-arms to opposing defenders, with his underrated speed providing some big runs. He ended up with 13 touchdowns and almost 1,000 yards while maintaining his high ypc average, with career highs of 26 carries, 206 yards, and three touchdowns in a monster performance against Texas Tech.. Trey was named an All-Big 12 Honorable mention after another impressive season.

Highlights

2019 Season

Oklahoma brings back 60% of its rushing production from 2018, with most of the departing chunk (31%) coming from Kyler Murray. Kennedy Brooks and Trey Sermon were fantastic last season; they have the chance to be the best running back tandem in college football in 2019. With a new quarterback and offensive line on the field, consistency in the backfield will be a positive for the Sooners this year. Look for Trey Sermon to have an All-Big 12 level season this year as he looks to break that 1,000 yard mark.
