The Path to Norman

Jalen Redmond and the Sooners circled each other for a long time. A basketball star, he finally circled back to football during the spring of his sophomore year. Several short months later, with no real film out there, the Oklahoma product attended the 2016 ChampUBBQ. Redmond stayed in touch with the coaching staff after that, making it to several OU games. He finally picked up an OU offer January of 2017, and attended Junior Day a month later. Despite only a year of film, he attended the Opening in Dallas last spring, with TFB’s Alex King having this to say:

The 2018 Midwest City OLB & Sooners offer measured in at 6’2.5” & 228-pounds. He is a lean 228 with plenty of room in his upper body to add weight. Liked the suddenness he shows off the edge. On one rep during 1v1s he delivered a nice outside stutter and then an inside club move to get to the pad. He displayed violent hands on that rep. Also tested out really well finishing in the top 20 at the event.

OU commits like Jordan Kelley and Patrick Fields continued to push Redmond toward the Sooners. Redmond returned to Norman during the summer of 2017, shortly after Coach Riley took the reins. Finally, the ChampUBBQ of July 2017 saw him decide to play for Oklahoma.

Career So Far

Redmond enrolled early in Norman, showing up this spring. TFB heard that he was impressing early.

One source noted, “Redmond is going to be beast”. I asked if Redmond is ready yet and source said that the staff is hopeful he will be by the season but he isn’t just yet. TFB Open Post: 4/2/2017

Unfortunately, a medical situation arose for Jalen. He developed blood clots and had to be admitted to a hospital. Thankfully, a very scary situation looks better now than it could have, as he is doing well. Coach Riley has stated that he will miss the season and that it will be a redshirt season for him, but that he is expected to be back in the future.

Highlights

2018 Season

Coach Riley feels confident that Redmond will be able to do quite a bit this season. In a perfect world, the blood clots are 100% behind him, he gets to practice all season, and gets to play occasionally toward the end of the season due to the new redshirt rule. Time will tell if that scenario plays out, but Redmond will be a force to be reckoned with whenever he does see the field.
