Torrance Gibson to Visit OU…Again

Image via USA Today Sports (Steve Dykes)

Last spring, American Heritage 2015 QB Torrance Gibson made it out to OU for an unofficial visit. This morning he told us he has plans to make it to Norman for a second visit. Gibson said he will use one of his official visits to Oklahoma for the…wait for it…wait for it…

…Tennessee game.

Add yet another high profile name to the already extensive list of high profile names expected to be in Norman that second weekend in September.

I’ve kind of forgotten, but is Tennessee still the main player for him, or is it Ohio State? The nice thing about getting a guy like Gibson here for that game, even if he doesn’t sign with us, is that he doesn’t seem like the type of guy who will be trying to recruit the other visitors elsewhere, and will probably talk up the school/team/program while here. Seems to truly enjoy Oklahoma and has shown nothing but respect for the program. Still seems like a long shot to get him, but he’s one that I sure don’t mind getting to campus as often as possible.

    • Jordan Esco says:

      Ohio State

      • Scott says:

Ohio State by far…this has to do with Braxton being hurt and then his replacement QB jumping in for Braxton once Braxton graduates

        • ToatsMcGoats says:

But the kid who’s replacing Miller is a RFr. and will have a full season of experience under his belt. Wouldn’t be surprised if that was a negative in Gibson’s eyes.

          • vargo05 says:

Toats agree with you. ๐Ÿ˜› By various accounts he’s a guy that is totally engrossed in being a good QB. He was a very highly rated recruit and if he’s capable of leading that team, I don’t see how that wouldn’t deter Gibson at least a little bit.

          • ToatsMcGoats says:

Not to mention the very real possibility that Miller could get another year of eligibility if he wanted it. Gibson should probably just go ahead and commit to OU…

          • Steve Cooke says:

If thats the case Justice Hanson may play into his decision.

          • ToatsMcGoats says:

I could see that, but Hansen isn’t penciled in as the starter right now. JT Barrett is. If he’s the next best on the team this year without experience, he’ll probably be the best next year, sighting experience alone. Plus, he’ll (Barrett) be eligible for another 3 seasons after this one…Gibson has a real chance at sitting the bench for 3 seasons at tOSU right off the bat.

          • Steve Cooke says:

That’s true but from what I read on another site one of the reasons Justice isn’t considered the #2 is because he doesn’t have the grasp of the play book the way Cody does.

          • ToatsMcGoats says:

Gotcha. That could be much different by the end of this season. I guess that sort of thing is the reason why Gibson wanted to hold out on making a commitment until NSD. However, if he really is that big of a project, I would guess that the only place he would get the early playing time he wants is at a lower tier school.

    • j l says:

after his high school game, he said OSU, OU and zona are his top 3. tenn and auburn fell off for some reason.

  • SamSooner says:

Super K, I’m very interested in your perspective on how the injury to Braxton Miller will impact who Torrance commits to. Ohio States QB this year will get valuable reps and game experience. And, if Braxton returns, push back how soon Torrance can compete for the starting job.

    • Zack says:

That and if knight lights it up this year that could be a sign to Gibson that ou develops better than other schools.

    • SoonerfanTU says:

It’s been my understanding that Gibson is a bit of a project at QB, and as such, isn’t a kid that will be reaslistically competing for a starting spot at OU (or Ohio State) until maybe a redshirt Soph year, or Junior year. I think that is one of the reasons why he is so attractive to OU, with all our young QB’s, b/c he isn’t a guy that is going to come in, jump guys on the depth chart, and create playing time issues. That’s always been my take.

      • vargo05 says:

I think he has some improving to do, but if you saw him the other day on ESPNU, he was impressive. Has a good arm, decent touch, etc. He may be a bit of a project, but I’m wondering if it’s as much as some have said it is.

    • Super K says:

Not sure how Torrance sees it but if I were any running QB that was interested in becoming a true passing QB, I’d much rather play in OU’s scheme at OU than Urban Meyer’s scheme. Additionally tOSU already has a QB committed.

      • j l says:

why anyone would want to play in meyer’s scheme is beyond me. He brutalizes QB’s, and if you dont have the body type of tebow, he is taking years and years off your career.

Gibsons thin frame would get broke in half in an OSU uni, IMO.

  • SoonerfanTU says:

With all of the recruits at the Tennessee game, I’m fully expecting OU to get flagged at least twice for sideline infractions.

Small price to pay, too. ๐Ÿ™‚

    • Zack says:

I would be ok with that.
I just hope these big time linebackers make a plan to play together here at ou.

      • Gary Robbins says:

Any prediction if we get a commit that weekend or maybe the days following the OU/Tennessee game. It’s almost to the point of wow. Athletes from all over, excellent group from California and Mississippi connections. I think as these athletes hear about who will be here it will really explode. I sure hope the new Director of Player personnel lays out the red carpet ( I mean crimson).

        • Zack says:

I mean honestly we should get at least one. If miss st can get 8 in one day. And we have a big time game with big time recruits on campus we’ve got to close the deal on a few and jump to the top of the list for anyone who’s wanting to wait til January.

          • Fear The Magic says:

Yeah Zack but Miss St is in the SEC remember (whoopdidoo)

          • Zack says:

Man I hope the run is over for good (at least 10 years) for the sec. But I hope it’s ou that takes over as the flagship program…again. For the 3rd time in stoops era.

    • AmaGoh7 says:

Yeah, the NCAA will probably be behind OU getting flagged. Any way to rule against OU seems to be their mantra since the 80’s lawsuit. Post traumatic stress coming through in my cynical comments I guess. (:

  • Ed Cotter says:

Man, this Tennessee game is going to be off the hook!

    • EasTex says:

The excitement building for this game is generally only seen when both teams are highly ranked.
I hope the RRS and BU game will have good attendance by recruits.

      • Ed Cotter says:

BIG 12 vs. SEC, especially when the BIG 12 team is Oklahoma, always generates excitement. In the RRS the home team is the one that invites the recruits, from what I understand. Is OU the home team this year? BU should be pretty well attended.

        • EasTex says:

Yessir, even years OU is the home team.
The Vols are getting a lot of buzz with their new coach and a couple of good recruiting classes. I don’t think this is the year for them as a team with a new line on O and D, but they will have some good athletes.

  • thedeez says:

Is there a running list of attendees for this game? So many stars I can’t keep count.

    • Zack says:

Gary has put together a list. It’s about 15 or so.

      • Gary Robbins says:

Nineteen counting Gibson and the maybe’s. Sunderland from Midwest City is the only Oklahoma kid so far and I’m sure that will increase.

  • KellyB says:

So here is who I see scheduled for the Tenn game (between TFB and Rivals):

    – Pat Allen (OL – Georgia commit)

    – Gabriel Campbell (DE)

    – Jamal Danley (OL)

    – Neville Gallimore (DT)

    – Torrance Gibson (QB)

    – Kahlil Haughton (DB)

    – John Humphrey (WR – OU commit)

    – Keisean Lucier-South (LB)

    – P.J. Mbanasor (DB – OU commit)

    – Cassius Peat (LB)

    – Martinas Rankin (OL)

    – Ykili Ross (DB)

    – Will Sunderland (DB)

That’s an impressive list! There could be others that I missed.

    • Brian says:

I don’t know if Pat Allen will still be visiting…especially after the Samia commitment.

Danley may be the only other OT taken…and he’s a swing guy that could play inside as well.

    • Gary Robbins says:

Some others that I have heard about but it’s not official.
      Ricky Deberry Richmond, Va.
      Lio Lafaela Tex. Tech commit.
      Rasheem Green, Gardena, Ca.
      Anthony Wheeler, Dallas, Tex. Skyline-maybe
Jarrett Guarantana Ora, N.J. 2016 QB unofficial visit-maybe
Dontavious Jackson, Houston, Tx. 2016 ILB unofficial visit-maybe
We need linebackers and Wheeler and DeBerry are not chopped liver-OU would take them in a New York minute.

      • Super K says:

Deberry is coming. We reported that a while back. In fact his whole family is coming

        • Zack says:

Do you think we will lead for deberry if we do end up beating Tennessee by 15+ points? Also where do you think we stand currently with the linebackers in this class and who do you think eventually ends up committing to ou?

        • Gary Robbins says:

Great-thanks. Probably 90% of the athletes I have listed I read about on TFB. It just amazes me at the amount of talented kids that will be here. It’s sort of like an invasion-from north to south and east to west.

        • Mr. Jones says:

Do you know what game Caban is planning his official for?

      • lovethemsooners says:

I thought Malik Jefferson was making it for this game too, or was that the Baylor game?

Also is the sham that is going on with Frank Shannon having a negative impact on our recruiting of Jefferson since they are so close? I have to think it is, but would like an opinion on that.

    • vargo05 says:

      That list skrong.

    • Steven says:

The people visiting that game alone could probably be a top 10 class just by themselves.

    • Scott says:

Would love to have Barnett and Wariboko there as well especially with all of the OL recruits visiting. Do we have an extensive list for the Baylor game?

Can we get Mixon sideline passes so he can chop it up with the recruits. Regardless he will be with them.

  • Kody K. says:

Wow, Stoops is going to have to do some extra hiring for this game to keep all these kids in order. A few high profile guides or liaisons would be a nice touch.

  • Mark slavin says:

Also see the Junior quarterback Guarantano will also be at that game.

    • Super K says:

      Yep.

    • Gary Robbins says:

Just seen that I had him down as a maybe. What a line-up for OU/Tenn. game.

      • Super K says:

        He’s coming bud.

        • Boom says:

Wonder if Whitfield is invited if he has a couple of great games to start off season. Have you talked to Whitfield in a while? Just curious.
From Oklahoma, I would like to see Barnett, Whitfield, & Sternberger. Also, Moore from Tx and Griffin from FL. Love to have Griffin come and pick up an offer. Good stuff as always.

    • Gary Robbins says:

A little different perspective on OU/Tenn attendees.
Home towns(high school) and JUCO if applicable.
      Pflugerville, Tx.
      League City, Tx.
      Yazoo City, Ms.
Olive Branch, Ms. East Miss. C.C.
Mendenhall, Ms. Miss. Gulf Coast C.C.
      Corona, Ca. Riverside, Ca. C.C.
      St. Catharines, Ontario
      Orange, Ca.
      Riverside, Ca.
      Gardena, Ca.
      Waco, Tx.
      Tempe, Az.
      Richmond, Va.
      Midwest City, Ok.
      Ft. Lauderdale, Fl.
      Oradell N.J.
      Reisterstown, Md.
      Houston, Tx.
      Dallas, Tx.
It really saddens me that OU has lost it’s touch! (sarcasm noted)

      • Zack says:

Gary you are the man thank you for putting all these lists together.

        • Gary Robbins says:

I enjoy it. Like you said the list will get bigger and bigger. I wonder is this common for this much talent on visits for one game?

          • Zack says:

It doesn’t seem like this much happens very often. Last year when mixon was on his official we also hosted adoree Jackson and Dwight Williams. Not sure who else might have been here.
But hosting this many recruits at one game probably only happens in the sec and the blue blood schools.

          • paganpink says:

Hey! If we’re not bluebloods in football, Zack- then NOBODY is! LOL!

      • hOUligan says:

Wow! That is off the chain crazy. Literally coast to coast and Hawaii and border to border and even a Canadian, aye!! Got OUr eye on anyone from Mexico?

      • Defend Colfax says:

Shows how much work all of our coaches have been putting in. The new guys have really seemed to spark a fire. I really hope we don’t lose anyone.

      • Kody K. says:

Nice job! I like how you listed by location. Certainly gives it a different perspective.

      • soonerthunder says:

Yes, it really is sad. Terrible players on this year’s team as well.

      • Sooner Ray says:

Gary, do you have a computer and desk up there on the hill or do you do all this work at home before you venture up that way? LOL.

      • connie usa says:

        Thanx for making me smile…….

  • JB says:

We need to blast Tenn like Oregon did last year to, rally make a strong impression on recruits

    • Drew says:

I’ve said this before, but if we don’t hang half a hundred on them, I’m going to be disappointed. Now, if it ends up being something like 42-0, I’ll be okay with it too.

  • Brian says:

Stripe the stadium, alternative uniforms, 40+ recruits (20+ on official visits), a good ol’ fashioned curb stomping of an orange-clad team that just so happens to also go by “UT” AND they’re in the SEC…

    It’s gonna be a good night ๐Ÿ™‚

    • SoonerfanTU says:

I like the way you think, sir.

    • roygbell says:

      Don’t you mean “TU”?

      • EasTex says:

He included Texsa as one of those.

      • Brian says:

No, Tennessee and Texas are both called “UT”

I don’t get the whole TU, Uterus, Shorthorns, thing…Tulsa is TU, so is Tulane…

        • EasTex says:

I generally refer to it as TSIA(that school in Austin)

        • Defend Colfax says:

The TU thing is new. I’ve only heard it since the Big 8 invited Texas schools inside of her. The Big 8 schools use OU,KU,MU,CU,NU, when they are all officially The U of “so and so”. So I’m assuming “TU” was created by ignorant Texsa fans during one of those fabulous, empty 10 win seasons they used to be good at.

  • Zack says:

Just saw this post on twitter from Millard. Saying this poster was a curse and claimed it’s last acl this week. I think a simian thing happened in 2009.

  • D'Brickashaw Ferguson says:

Holy cow that’s a ton of stud recruits coming. Do we have enough coaches for this? Just asking because I’m hoping each get individual attention as well as a great experience. Gibson, DeBerry, and Lucier-South would be HUGE for us. Oh and Guarantano, too.

This whole recruiting weekend reminds me of Notre Dame 2012. Hoping for a royal Rocky Top beat down!

    • EasTex says:

The coaches will all be busy game day, it will be up to red shirts and GAs to host them.

      • Fear The Magic says:

I hope Mixon gets in their ear ( presuming he wants to stay at OU )…That kid is a great natural recruiter and besides now that hes redshirting, this is the group he’ll be playing with for the most part.

    • vargo05 says:

The important thing will be trying to get as many of these kids as possible in on Friday or getting them to stay around a bit later on Sunday. That’ll give them their opportunity for good one-on-one time with coaches.

  • HoustonChiver says:

Is there a list anywhere of the recruits we have visiting for the Tennessee game? It’s getting laughable at this point! Loving it

  • Coach JK says:

Great list!!! glad to see some of our commits also coming!! Great players are usually the best recruiters for other great players!!! Boomer!!!

  • Josh says:

4 Days Till Football Time in Oklahoma!! Boomer!!
    Over 2000 yards rushing
    Over 2400 yards passing
    54 Total TDs
QB of the 1985 National Champions and still the only True Freshman to quarterback his team to a National Championship
    The King of the Wishbone
    Jamelle Holieway

    • Kody K. says:

One of my favorites of all time! Master of the wishbone. Carried the ball like a loaf of bread just like in the picture. Switzer certainly wasn’t going to force him to carry the ball any differently.

  • godman says:

So then, is it possible that the recruiting season is over after the Tennessee game if they all decide to commit? LOL

  • James D-Space says:

Isn’t Gibson high on Tennessee & Ohio State? I thought I saw an interview with him and they were his top two, I believe he also mentioned Auburn.
Once we slam the Vols, he will take them off of his list. Boomer!

  • lovethemsooners says:

Will we even have a scholarship available for Gibson? I thought our QB scholarship for ’15 was going to Baker Mayfield. I know Jordan’s brother(kidding) JH is saying this, and that OU is focusing it’s attention more on that Guarantano kid. Would OU even have scholarships available for both Mayfield and Gibson?

    • Zack says:

I would think the shannon situation will have an effect on wheeler, jefferson and McNeal. With wheeler being from skyline and jefferson being his cousin. And jefferson and McNeal being teammates and probably close friends.

  • Brian says:

If we can get Gibson, we will. Sorry Baker…

    • ND52 says:

I’ll take a proven starter over an untested recruit any day of the week and twice on Saturday.

    • Sooner Ray says:

Why do you think he could beat out Baker in his first year on campus? Yes he’s a heck of an athlete but there is a lot to be said about knowing a system and having good timing established with existing receivers.

    • Big Higg says:

I don’t think taking Gibson would be any kind of a threat to Mayfield…

    • Brian says:

Guys, guys, guys…I was saying that simply about the scholarship.

Gibson and Mayfield may be fighting over a scholarship. If Gibson commits/signs, he gets it. If not, Mayfield will…

  • Ed Cotter says:

Are any of the TFB Faithful going to be at the Tennessee game? I know that Lovethemsooners and I will be there? BOOMER!!

  • Zack says:

I think it’s really smart to have both Gibson and Guarantano on campus at the same time. Since guarantano is between ou and tosu according to the crystal ball. And Gibson could have the same top 2 after that visit. Then you just use gibson’s decision (if tosu) to swing guarantano to ou.
