Sooners News Daily 9.23.14

We still don’t know anything about Baker Mayfield. The inital report was refuted late last night (see TOP for the latest), which was the primary reason we (and basically everyone else in the media) waited — and will continue to do so — before reporting anything.

ICYMI yesterday:

According to one oddsmaker, OU would be a favorite in a theoretical national title match-up with Florida State. (ESPN)

Again, whatever issues you may have had with OU’s alternate jerseys…things could be much, much worse.

Great stat alert.

First! This time I will not be this that dude that’s first out of the tunnel and falls on his face. I have this to say: Texass sucks!!!!!

  • herewegosooners says:

Swoopes needs to be drug tested… and not for PEDs

  • blaster1371 says:

Louisville uniforms are absolutely hideous. I see those and think someone made a mistake doing the team laundry. If Louisville wore those unis while playing Oregon in their most neon yellow unis it could cause seizures nationwide.

  • Zack says:

Why are radio guys demanding knight be replaced? John rhode wants mayfield eligible to replace knight so we can have a “real passer” isn’t knight’s record 8 or 9-0? As a starter and he’s not making mistakes just taking care of business.

    • Shelby is a Patriot says:

Not to mention how much better he’d be playing if he had more freedom to run.

      • Zack says:

I agree with both of you. I think it’s great that our qb doesn’t have to throw the ball 40+ times each game in order for our team to be successful. I would like to see improvement but I believe knight is the guy and I think we should have a smallwood sighting vs tcu or texas. They brought him in on that goal line play and he did his job blocking well I think that will stick out to the coaches in film review.

    • pitbull17 says:

Because they’re stupid…Knight still needs to work on his passing, but he’s doing what he’s being allowed to do and OU is winning. What more can you ask of your QB?

    • Defend Colfax says:

I only come hear for my OU news so I don’t have to listen to tool bags. You should try it.

      • Zack says:

Great advice. I’m listening again and it’s not as negative but I wish these guys would take calls and answer questions of how dumb they sound. I’m curious when was the last time a pass happy team won the title? USC in 2004? But they had a great running game as well. Just saying we had the most explosive offense possibly ever and lost to a grind it out running/option attack.

I tuned in late to the wvu game and heard and read people talking about how cool Tricket was doing and how “shaky ” TK was so I looked at the stats and TK
      was at 75 % no Int”s and Tricket was at 60% with 2 int’s and a fumble .

      ?????? WT…

      • Boom says:

Trevor did have an INT but he is getting better. He’s in his element on the move or when the pocket moves. People calling for his head have no idea what it looks like through a QB’s eyes and the multiple decisions that have to be made in a split second.

      • hOUligan says:

It was that All-American smile and the hair.

    • Prof27 says:

I’ve never understood all this dissatisfaction with Trevor Knight. The upside on this kid is huge. He’s demonstrated again and again that he has the ability. At times he gets a little shaky, but that comes from inexperience. People forget that he’s started all of nine games! And yeah — his record is 9-0. That’s not enough?

The other thing that people forget is that the idiots on sports radio are paid to create controversy. They do it because it drives the ratings. Sometimes I have a hard time believing these guys are as dim as they sound, but then I listen to the “dynamic dumbos” and all doubts are removed.

      • Zack says:

Speaking of those idiots did you listen yesterday when dean Blevins was on and couldn’t remember what he reported about mayfield?

I could understand the doubting knight if he was bouncing balls to receivers like he did in his first 2 starts but he’s come a long way.

        • Prof27 says:

Nope. Missed Blevins, but I did hear BBJ go on and on about Knight’s “deficiencies” as QB. I’ve watched a lot of quarterbacks over the years at universities where I either taught or attended, including Jake Plummer, Jim McMahon, Ty Detmer, and all the OU QBs of the Stoops era. The only one I can remember who never seemed to go through a “lack of confidence” phase was Sam Bradford. (Maybe he did, but I don’t remember it.) Actually, Knight reminds me of a certain QB who used to get too pumped up and throw erratically in big games, especially in his first season or two. But he could run, throw, and read defenses. His name? Steve Young.

    • kt-raida says:

I personally think knight is better than Mayfield, but Mayfield would be a great backup

  • SoonerfanTU says:

I’d probably be screaming just like that lady in the snake video. lol

  • Cory Reedy says:

That pee-wee football banner fail though….

  • pitbull17 says:

Perine is an awesome kid, you could just see how excited he was in the interview he did after the game. Buying the big uglies some pizza just further shows that he knows he has to have them, and it probably makes them want to open holes for him that much more. I’m calling real on the snake video, I’ve heard that when snakes get that size it’s hard for them to move very fast at all.

    • SoonerfanTU says:

The term “good kid” gets thrown around a lot these days, but Perine certainly seems to fit the description. Fans LOVE to get behind good kids that are also great/good football players. Perine is going to be a crowd favorite for the next 3.5 seasons, I think.

    • EasTex says:

Snake was real, an anaconda that just swallowed a pig, which was a good thing for the guy messing with it.

  • ToatsMcGoats says:

ESecPN is trying to explain their top 4…HILARIOUS!!!

    • Zack says:

I can’t even listen to them I’m hopeful the committee sees right through their smokescreen. I think what we are going to find out is that 4 teams is not enough to satisfy the masses. I think in 10 years they will go to an 8 team format which may work a lot better.

      • hOUligan says:

Yeah. With 8 teams it gives the sec a better chance since Finebaum will push for a 7 + 1; 7 sec teams and 1 at large from those other conferences.

        • Boom says:

Finebaum is just making a paycheck and he will go with whoever is winning in the SEC and take up for the ones who aren’t. I find him entertaining. ESPN & SEC are behind him so he’s just cashing in. I find it interesting that he knows so much about football and by the looks of him, he never played a down.

  • Brad Warren says:

He’s a few cards short of a full deck.

  • Defend Colfax says:

The Hornung award up there with those two uniforms makes me miss beating Nebbish ass.

  • SoonerfanTU says:

So when is the first CFP ranking due out? Some time in Oct, right?

  • LXXIV says:

Those Louisville uniforms look like they came from Darth Vader’s dark side.

  • BigJoeBrown says:

I’m sorry but I still feel bitterness about Paul Hornung beating out OU’s Tommy MacDonald for the Heisman. Screw the Irish. Notre Dame went 2-8 with Hornung going 59 Cmp, 111 Att, 917 Yds, 3 TD, 13 Int, meanwhile OU went 10-0 with Tommy MacDonald went, 119 Att, 853 Yds, 7.2 Avg, 12 TD winning a National Championship.

  • Brent says:

Weird question…but after the NCAA’s ruling on Baker Mayfield, can he at the very least redshirt and retain 3 years of eligibility or does the Big XII have final say over the NCAA on his remaining eligibility?
