Sooners News Daily 9.12.14

Evidently I missed the Joe Mixon witch hunt that took place on social media last night & the local papers (at least online) today. Color me not disappointed in the slightest.

FOOTBALL

When tomorrow is game day and you’ll be in Norman to see it.

Is Josh Heupel a possible candidate for the SMU head coach job? This person seems to believe so. (ESPN)

Sam Bradford had surgery on his knee this week. (ESPN)

Everyone is really concerned with whatever injury J.W. Walsh may or may not have suffered. You saw Garman right? So why does it matter? (Twitter)

Seems like most of spent the better part of the week laying the groundwork/making excuses (i.e. “they’re really young) for why Tennessee is expected to lose. (SI)

Texas uber-booster, Red McCombs, just can’t keep his big trap shut. (CBS Sports)

Keep your eye on the coach calling for the chest bump.

OTHER

Nice story on former OU baseball player Drew Krittenbrink, who is still in Norman pursuing a graduate degree. (Piedmont)

WTF is that thing?!?

RDJ tugging at the heart strings.

Artsy.

Tom Hardy + James Gandolfini = Guaranteed watch from this guy.

    Definitely a chupacabra.

They didn’t “miss us” when not including OU in his list of college choices. We just don’t actually exist in the eyes of ESECPN.

    • Zack says:

Not only that but he’s released a top 4. Ou, tosu, bama, and Clemson I think.

    • Swanny says:

Saw that and just assumed he’s a high school kid who changes his mind all the time. Luginbill is a homer for the SEC. Played at GT, but wishes he was good enough to play at Georgia.

ESPN’s recruiting coverage has been garbage for a long, long time, IMO. Don’t get me wrong, there are exceptions (Damon Sayles isn’t horrible) but for the most part I ignore their take on things as a general policy.

        • Swanny says:

Agreed. All driven by $$$ they have invested in TV deals. Sad thing is the Big12 wasn’t smart enough to realize the monopoly that ESPN has on the college football market.

          • Boom says:

They did, it was Deloss Dodds who muddied the waters on that deal. Dodds single handed messed up the Big 12.

          • Swanny says:

The Big 12 allowed it. A&M, Nebraska, Colorado, and Mizzou did the smart thing and saw the writing on the wall. If the Big 12 was smart, we’d add teams like Fresno St., Cincy, and UCF to the conference. All big schools, in recruiting hotbeds, that’d add great TV markets.

    • boomersooner says:

I wonder if someone ever had the time to put together a chart that showed time talked about or shown on screen for all college teams and/or conferences. My guess would be 94% sec, 3% acc, 2% b10, .8% pac12 and .2% b12

I don’t see JH going to SMU, but I’ve been wrong before.

    • blaster1371 says:

Me neither. Once again I’m thinking why leave a good gig— coach the OU offense and great players, paid well. Money is only part of the equation. I say the same thing about Gundy and Bobby jack Wright. None of those guys are hurting financially unless they are idiots with money ( who couldn’t get by on 200k a year).

    • Cory Reedy says:

Not sure what is going on at SMU but it seems to me that maybe it’s administration. Maybe the coaches have their hands tied? They have an OUTSTANDING recruiting base. They should atleast be a Bowl team every year. It’s not like June Jones can’t coach. There’s something more to it and if I was Heupel theres no way I make that transition. Not all money is good money.

    • Zack says:

We’ve got great assistants right now and we could see another string of assistants taking HC jobs. I think gundy and heupel may stay regardless of job offers. The HC job may eventually be heupels and gundy may not be considered for OC positions. I just hope they can keep this staff together.

I like to pretend Tappers letting out a Nature Boy (rick flair)
    “Woooooooooo!” After that strut.

    • blaster1371 says:

Didn’t Casey Walker do that same dance after his sack of Case McCoy a few years back?

      • SoonerKevin says:

I don’t know if you are old enough to remember a 1970’s sitcom called the Jefferson’s, But George Jefferson did that dance. back in the 80’s Miami Hurricanes had a player that did it first on the football field.

        • blaster1371 says:

Jeffersons!!! “Movin’ on up to theeeee top… Finally got our piece of the pieeeeeeeeiiiiiiiieeeeeeeeeeyah.”

I can’t help but be fascinated by the events in Texass. If they don’t scare off the recruits and still get good players then Strongs philosophy will gain traction. The “soft” team Brown had and Strong inherited is, IMO, a reflection of the arrogant boosters (not the average joe fan) that suffocate that program. Those boosters think their millions of dollars should cause others to bow in their presence and soak like a prairie does rain every word and comment they have about this and that. If the Texass team has a sense of entitlement then it was a contaminate from the uber boosters. I would absolutely love it of Strong tried to cut that off by saying WE don’t need you to play good football and take the team out of their palace and practice at a high school, lift chunks of concrete, drag tractor tires through mud, team carry sections of oil drilling pipe (just for nostalgia) and drink from a water hose. The boosters wanted “tough” and when they got it they have balked which to me is a clear indication they didn’t know what “tough” looked like. Those same boosters have ruined the Texass and aggie rivalry and done things to “protect the brand” that have made the team look like wusses. I sound too much like a Texass apologetic so I will stop my rant.

Not to drag this out…but I absolutely hate what guys like Kersey and Hoover are doing these days. Guerin Emig is the only decent reporter we have now.

  • cpearc00 says:

The rule in my house is if Tom Hardy is in it I will give it a shot. Add in Gandolfini, and this movie looks like it won’t disappoint.

    • Eric Hoffpauir says:

Guy who wrote Training Day is behind that movie. I’ll still probably wait for it on DVD, but I’m looking forward to it.

  • ToatsMcGoats says:

    Awww…those cute lil Tennessee players!

  • BR says:
