Sooners News Daily 8.8.14

FOOTBALL

Mini Twitter freakout yesterday apparently after ESPN erroneously reported Baker Mayfield’s appeal had been denied. I guess that’s what you get for following an ESPN account.

OU is reportedly in the process of purchasing a food truck with the new NCAA rules allowing athletes more snacks. (ESPN)

Big day in NCAA yesterday. Will be fascinating to see how this things plays out. (USA Today)

‘Can QB experience crack Big 12’s title drought?’ (Fox Sports)

Looks about right to me.

RECRUITING

OU hosted & offered 2015 OT Dru Samia (Danville, CA) yesterday.

Jamal Danley is expected to announce his commitment this morning. The presumption is he’s deciding between OU & Miss. St. However, despite multiple instances in which he was supposed to visit Norman, he never made it to the OU campus. Though he has ben adamant about this being a ‘business decision’ and intimating in countless interviews that the Sooners would provide him the best opportunity to play at the next level. Which is all to say this one could truly go either way, IMO.

OTHER

OU placed two players on the Preseason All-Big 12 volleyball team. (Twitter)

I lol’d

This reminds me of that scene in Forgetting Sarah Marshall. This one when Segel reenacts the scene in her movie.

Michigan, Texas, Ohio State and Bama the most hated? Yup, pretty much lines up with my feelings. I wouldn’t give two craps about Michigan, but living here makes you really hate that team. They are the northern version of the delusional Texas A&M and Okie State fans. They win nothing, yet think they are elite somehow.

    • Buster Rhymes 4 says:

Ageed! Lived in Birmingham Michigan for 8 long years! As hard as it may be to believe they are more delusional than atm fans and Notre Dame fans. You could probably throw Ohio State in there too…

      • vargo05 says:

I’d say so as well, but at least tOSU wins conference championships and has a shot to be in the running for a Natty sometimes. UM has done so little in the last 14 years it’s nearly pathetic. A team that is “elite” should NEVER lose to Appalachian State. Plus, they’ve beaten tOSU like twice in the last 14 years.

      • Boom says:

Michigan may be delusional but tOSU is just arrogant.

        • vargo05 says:

That’s Michigan’s problem. They have this confidence that I don’t know where the heck it’s coming from, so they end up being viewed as delusional by me because it’s just odd to have confidence when there’s no reason to.

    • Jed says:

Let’s get some token hate for Boston College. I remember well the day a bunch of south boston morons insisted that “Oklahoma would never dare play BC”. I think I passed half a beer out my nose.

      • vargo05 says:

Wow. That is a stupid thing to say. We schedule Florida State, Notre Dame and teams like that, but we are scared of BC. Boston people are all inflicted with some sort of mental illness though, so you can’t blame theme exactly.

        • Jed says:

That was a long time ago, to be fair. Before they started their current and on-going 35 year slide.

  • Sooner Ray says:

Dru Samia looks like a beast, what are our chances?

    • vargo05 says:

Seems like UCLA is the favorite, but you don’t come to Oklahoma on your own dime just because you want an offer for your ego. He’s been wanting an offer, but OU told him they have to know his interest is real. He made the trip and got his offer. OU just has to work for it now.

      • Sooner Ray says:

Always hate fighting for a kid in his own back yard but these coaches have pulled off some big ones in the past.

        • vargo05 says:

Totally agree. It seems like such an effort that doesn’t pan out so often. However, you gotta fight for it if it’s worth the offer.

        • Gary Robbins says:

Agree. OU really needs to get that California pipeline started fror big mauler type road graders out of California. Danville is one of the most expensive zip codes in the country and like 95% of their kids in public schools go to college or technical trade schools(fwiw).

  • Zack says:

So less than 5% chance on Danley?

    • vargo05 says:

Why would you say that? Nothing in the post above suggests that. Seems like a 50-50 deal, in spite of him not visiting. We just don’t know how good his relationship with Bedenbaugh is.

      • SoonerfanTU says:

I can’t believe it’s really 50/50 without him visiting. Why not just hold off on committing until he can make it up here? What percentage of OU recruits commit before visiting campus even once?

We’ll see, and I think we have a shot, but I wouldn’t call them 50/50 at this point.

        • vargo05 says:

See reply above. Prob more like 67-33, but definitely better than 5%.

        • Boom says:

If Danley commits fine, if not no worries. This year will help the OT’s that are already in the system with technique, strength, & conditioning. In addition, they have great attitudes and know what it takes to be successful based on Williams leadership. Also, I would rather take an additional Freshman OT instead of Juco. Danley is good but I like what TFB is reporting from the younger guys.

      • Fear The Magic says:

I hope Im wrong but I agree that its not looking good on Danley. I believe he put off at least 2 visits. Went to Miss St and almost committed that weekend. At least thats what I read.

        • vargo05 says:

I’m not overly hopeful either, but to say less than 5% is not close to realistic to me. 50-50 is probably high, so more like 67-33 MSU may be more accurate.

      • Zack says:

I went low because if I’m going to say ou has less than 50% chance then that means I don’t like our odds.
I don’t think he’s coming to ou that’s just me. It would make sense for him to choose ou for all the reasons he’s alluded to (business) but why commit before you visit? Our last 5 commits at least choose to commit while on campus or shortly after they left.

        • Kody K. says:

Yea, might as well throw percentages of chance out the window at this point. Bottom line in my estimation, it doesn’t look good for OU. Don’t seem like he’d miss the chance to visit and then commit. Wasn’t he there that weekend Miss. St. had all those commits?

    • Ronald Keith says:

Just tell jamal to look in each teams trophy case then check nfl rosters. That should help him make his choice

  • EasTex says:

Saw this movie trailer the other day, looks pretty good.

    • Thomas Lenard says:

A movie about winners losing instead of about losers winning….that’s different.

  • EasTex says:

Would love to see the results of the poll.
I had no idea there was that much hate for Michigan nation wide and what’s with the hate for Ole Miss in New Mexico and Bama in Colorado?

    • Jeremy Phillips says:

      Or Ohio St. In Kansas…?

      • EasTex says:

It must be because those are sparsely populated states with few football fans.

        • OUWade says:

There was a thread about this on one of the other websites and about how the initial poll and map were skewed because of the ability of people to create bots to vote more than once. The guy who did the poll updated it with the removal of a lot of the raw data. Mostly the same, but a couple areas that made a little more sense (like Kansas hating Missouri more than anyone)

          • EasTex says:

That Jayhawk hate for Mizzou runs deep and long.

          • soonerinks says:

That’s the result of burning Lawrence, Ks to the ground. There is a real reason for the hate!

          • EasTex says:

            Indeed.

          • EasTex says:

Just noticed, doesn’t appear to be any hate for OU across the board, not even in Texas.

          • Eric Hoffpauir says:

There are a lot of OU fans in Texas, right?

          • EasTex says:

I believe you are right, but the hate for that school in Austin surpasses all others.

          • HoustonChiver says:

I live in Houston, I’d say 70% of UH fans hate UT. Plus you have all of the aggies and Baylor fans who hate UT. Lots of OU and Arkansas fans up in the Dallas area who…hate UT. Seems only the small irrelevant schools (SFA, SHSU, UTSA, Texas State) who are fans of UT w/o going there

    • vargo05 says:

Michigan fans are some of the most uneducated, unrealistic fans anywhere. Period. Trust me. I deal with them daily.

      • EasTex says:

        I trust you explicitly.
And what’s with those helmets, anyway? The first time I saw them as a kid I was appalled and still am.

    • BigJoeBrown says:

One thing that seems to be a consensus, everyone hates Texas.

    • Christopher Coffman says:

Same, I was surprised to see Michigan in some of those areas.

  • Jeremy Phillips says:

Last night TFB tweeted that this is shaping up to be a monster o-line class for OU.. Is that just based on the offers we have out there, or are they hinting at a possible commit??

    • Jordan Esco says:

That was K so I can’t necessarily speak for him, but I believe it was more the former than the latter.

    • Super K says:

Not necessarily from Danley (I don’t know where he is headed) but OU fans are going to be getting some good news in the next few weeks.

      • Zack says:

        From Madison akamnonu?

        • Zack says:

Or Barnett? I’ve seen some things suggesting he may decide soon.

          • Gary Robbins says:

I’m waiting on the 24th for M. Akamnonu. He is an OU legacy and Texas Tech is right there in the running again. Maybe Barnett is waiting for school to start when all his friends can be a part of it. If we miss out on both of those athletes then it’s step aside coffee-this is a job for alcohol.

          • EasTex says:

Don’t do that to yourself, try a different brand of coffee first.

          • Kody K. says:

You kill me, man. I have no idea where you get all this crap (stuff).

          • EasTex says:

            LOL!
            It’s the interwebs, man.

          • Gary Robbins says:

That’s why I enjoy his posts. I still use the “knotted plow line” when talking to some of my friends.

          • Gary Robbins says:

lmao. Bottom paragraph-at my age I don’t need a soft feeling. I will just add another scoop of coffee. Thanks as always.

          • EasTex says:

            Okay, then.
Just trying to he’p a brotha out.

          • Jed says:

Ah yes, ‘Fox Coffee’. The world’s most expensive. Right up there with coddled whale semen on the list of ‘My Chef Had Waaaaaay Too Much Free Time’ foods.

      • EasTex says:

Thanks K and I love it when you do that.

      • leatherneck1061 says:

That’s what I like to hear. Now you have us all salivating 😉

  • leatherneck1061 says:

I don’t quite understand why Nevada would have a special hate for Michigan. ??

  • DCinAZ says:

It’s always interesting the language and the image portrayal that the media chooses in writing about the BIG XII. We’re on a title drought apparently and even if we’re good, will the polls reflect it? On and on it goes. Nevermind that until last year, the ACC hadn’t won a title game in 12 years (2001) and the PAC 12 hasn’t won a title in 10 years (2004}. No it’s the BIG XII and it’s suckitude we need to write about because they haven’t won a title since 2005! LOL……
