Sooners News Daily 8.27.14

Sorry, y’all. Slow news day.

FOOTBALL

‘Sooners must buck troublesome trend to reach playoff’ (Fox Sports)

Amazingly disturbing factoid regarding somewhat recent Iowa State running backs. (Des Moines Register)

So, um, yeah about that story from yesterday and the USC player who hurt himself supposedly rescuing his nephew. Seems as though he may have made the whole thing up. (Yahoo)

OTHER

Former Sooner Danielle Robinson invited to Team USA basketball trials. (Sooner Sports)

I’m so over these if for no other reason than the senseless wasting of water, so I guess in some ways this is karma.

ESPN’s Big XII preview also used that preseason hype metric to demonstrate we were overrated. This is faulty correlation at its best. All that’s really being demonstrated is how terribly the “professionals” do evaluating teams preseason. The top 5 over the course of every season changes dramatically, it’s not a condition isolated to the Sooners. As usual, it’s a weak argument concocted to create controversy and discussion where there needn’t be any. Always remember, there are lies, damned lies, and statistics.

    • hOUligan says:

Much of the ‘over-rated’ comes from a couple of bad calls by OU coaches who are no longer on staff. OU got crushed by SC but close games with LSU and UF that could have gone OUr way. Get 1 of those NCs and no one is talking this carp. New day, new era. Got CMike back and Coach B and Coach Monty are tearing it up along with the new ST Coach Bouyah.

Why is that girl wearing water wings?

  • thedeez says:

Senseless wasting of water haha. Come on man, it’s maybe 5 gallons per pop max.

    • vargo05 says:

For something that has raised over $88 million towards a GREAT cause. Doesn’t sound too senseless to me.

      • Jordan Esco says:

As I said above (or at least above for me), I’m all for the charitable good it’s doing. I should have been more specific in my comment. It’s senseless to waste all this water. It’s NOT senseless to donate to a good cause (this one or the countless others out there).

      • J J says:

When you’re water levels are below 20%, you aren’t allowed to fill your pools & your water rates go up 60% to use recycled sewer water…. Then you can decide what’s senseless water use…

        Thanks!

        • EasTex says:

I won’t have anything to do with this ALS organization because of a sensitive social issue that I will not discuss here.
And that’s all I have to say about that.

        • vargo05 says:

Your POOL? Seriously? I might have felt a bit sorry for you until you added that.
What about when YOUR water levels are OK and you have what YOU need? Would it be senseless then or not so much because you haven’t been inconvenienced? Is filling your pool OK then even though there are millions others around the world without decent water supply? Or is it only senseless when it applies to you and you poor inability to swim in your pool? Just wondering because it would seem senseless to fill your pool with 100s of gallons of water while others are going without, now wouldn’t it?

          • J J says:

Actually, I don’t have a pool. But yeah, I know people who do. And they already have damage.

Actually, I was referring water conservation in general. It’s not renewable per se honestly. And for the record where I am in west texas, the city water sources are predicted to be completely gone within the year,… So don’t lecture me about people going without. They are going without here. Right here, right now. Forget pools.

          • vargo05 says:

Well, honestly, I do feel sorry for people without good water, shelter, food, etc. I have never had to deal with that and I feel fortunate. I wish there was a good solution and I hope they can find one.

          • J J says:

Honestly it’s really brutal here. About 3 mos the city “studied” the household usages & set a maximum per individual household based on it. So, an older couple I know went on a medical mission in April & came back 19 weeks later. Obviously using no water (or very little ice maker etc) during that time. There first water bill after the trip was almost $500, for fines going over their “allowable average”. Absolute true story.

    • hOUligan says:

I get that the ALS challenge does good and should be a fun thing but think it has gotten to be just another selfie opportunity for some. Need to be mindful and purposeful in this. Has anyone on this forum participated?

      • vargo05 says:

I’ve participated, as have a bunch of my friends, as well as donated. I have a co-worker whose mother dealt with ALS and a good friend whose aunt is suffering from it as well. Some people are just using it for foolish reasons, but even so, with $88 million raised to date, those negatives are miniscule compared to the good that money will do.

    • pitbull17 says:

I don’t think it’s senseless to raise money for a great cause, I do think you could just donate and not try to get famous off it….Speaking of senseless, after her brush with the pole and then the concrete she may be getting coloring books for Christmas from here on out.

    • rphdenton says:

…..tell that to people in some areas of the country where nothing comes out the tap

    • Jordan Esco says:

Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for the charitable good it’s doing. But water is not an infinite resource and IMO this is senseless wasting of it.

      • willie says:

Water is an infinitely renewable resource, no matter how the water is used it ends back up in the clouds and comes back down as rain. That is not to say it comes down evenly, we have had a terrible time in Southern Oklahoma the last 4 or 5 years.

        • thedeez says:

Water may not be “infinitely renewable” by the technical definition, but it is an indefinite resource.

      • thedeez says:

I should clarify that my comment is not so much criticism as it is poking fun.

      • SoonerGoneEast says:

I really hate seeing all the wasted ice. That’s just the worst. It takes a lot of electricity to make the ice, and the extra demand on our power resources leads to ienergy price increases. SMH people! I’m all for raising money for a good cause, but we need to be more responsible, more thoughtful and less selfish in our approach.

  • BigJoeBrown says:

Cool pic of Robinson….makes a Sooner proud!

  • leatherneck1061 says:

Story about ISU players is spooky……would probably make someone more superstitious want to avoid playing for ISU altogether. As for Shaw, I don’t get it. How else would he have sprained both ankles? Something was said about possible burglary, but that doesn’t seem to make much sense. Just can’t imagine someone making up a story like this and really expecting no one would find out.

    • paganpink says:

There was another story carried in the press saying that he was involved in a domestic dispute involving him striking a young woman and then jumping 3 stories off of the girls balcony for reasons not explained. Personally I didn’t think the original story made much sense. A second floor balcony is easy to get off of if you’re young and strong, and a child that’s yelling is scared, but not hurt yet. Which is why they say they assume he didn’t report it. Time will tell, but you can bet that USC wishes it hadn’t broadcast the hero story without checking first.

  • Zack says:

Somewhat of an interesting article from trammel. Didn’t expect this story to not shovel more … on mixon.

    • ToatsMcGoats says:

You mentioned his name…I’m not even gonna read it.

      • paganpink says:

It’s worth it, Toats. Surprisingly makes an extremely strong case for Mixon.

        • ToatsMcGoats says:

yeah, but…I’ve already sworn off any Tramel articles…I guess I’ll do it, but only because YOU recommended it.

          • Zack says:

Hey man I agree I didn’t want to read it because I was like oh great trammel. But it was good I thought mainly because the writing was already done by the emailer.

          • ToatsMcGoats says:

            Agreed.

          • Boom says:

Toats, Tramel didn’t write the article, he just asked permission to use what Mike Fair sent him.

          • ToatsMcGoats says:

Yeah, that’s what I was trying to say in my post above. The only two articles that “Tramel wrote” in the past few months that I’ve been able to suffer through were written by someone else.

        • ToatsMcGoats says:

Okay, here’s the deal. The last few articles I’ve read from Tramel that were actually pretty decent were mostly written by another person. One was the parent who had a player get into trouble and was giving that side of the story. It was overwhelmingly written by that parent. The entire article was a quote from an email. This is pretty much the same type of article. “Here’s an email I got: Huge block quote ensues, the end”.

These are the only Tramel articles that I can actually read. But, you were right, it was worth it.

    • paganpink says:

Yes! Both Mike Fair and even Tramel make exactly the same points we have talked about on here. And Fair WROTE the law. As soon as a DA has to come out and talk about morals rather then the law he is not doing his job because the law gives him no such discretion. He was wrong and she should still be charged. And as much as I would like to be done with the whole thing personally, Mixon has every right to challenge the District Attorneys overreach- and he probably should.

Little off subject, but been watching some of the 2003 Rose Bowl on youtube….good times 🙂

    • soonermusic says:

on another thread, JJ and I were discussing the fact that we were each at that game, and agreeing, as all great football fans must, that the weather was beautiful.

  • soonermusic says:

So someone associated with the USC football team may have been guilty of lying…I’m shocked, I tell you, shocked….!

Not a single SI CFB writer picked a Big 12 team to make the inaugural playoff. http://www.si.com/college-football/2014/08/27/preseason-college-football-playoff-predictions

    • leatherneck1061 says:

What’s interesting is that while a lot of people blast ESPiN for SEC bias (including me), SI may actually be worse…..those guys have a serious man-crush on Saban. In this case Baumgaertner is probably the worse – predicting an all SEC title game again like 2011. Frankly, I can’t take any of these people seriously anymore.

    • j l says:

Didnt SI have us #1 going into the season though?

Esco will y’all be adding a section on the hydrosphere and water cycle? If so I think my years as a Geography teacher could come in useful…. I teach the crap outta that lesson!

  • Bill Haire says:

I was wondering if anyone know of Internet radio feed for the game saturday

    • EasTex says:

      1430 The Buzz
They are out of Tulsa and has been a glitch free radio broadcast for me in the past, it’s where I will be on Saturday. You can also download the I Heart Radio app on your smartphone and get it.
