Sooners News Daily 7.23.14

My main take away from Big 12 media days was that everyone set the bar so low for Charlie Strong from a public persona standpoint, that so long as he doesn’t spit in the face/s of whatever media he is speaking with they’ll trip all over themselves lauding praise on the guy. He’s not Mack, and he’ll never be Mack. But he’s still the HC at Texas which means just about everyone outside of Austin will be all too happy to make excuses for him.

FOOTBALL

He somewhat sneakily throws it in at the very end, but Berry Tramel seemingly confirming what TFB told you about a month ago re: an expectation (which guarantees nothing, so don’t get it twisted) for DGB  to stay two years if his waiver isn’t approved. (NewsOK)

The second guessing of OU’s defense is starting early. (TW)

On Oklahoma State: “When we went there a couple years ago, we had like a grandpa behind our bench holding his grandson while he was MFing us on the sidelines.” Sounds about right for Stillwater. (Fox Sports)

Nice story on Geneo Grissom drawing inspiration from his father whose cancer is now in remission. (KWCH)

Possibly more trouble for TCU star Devonte Fields. (Star-Telegram)

Deep breaths, Jordan. As the person generating much of the daily content here, you know the pressure to make things looooong; when you should be striving for concision (that a word? Hope so, because I like it). Ignore it, the guy just went on and on because he had to fill a block of white space.

  • Big Higg says:

Nick Saban is such a poor sport. Anybody watching the game could see that Alabama didn’t want to lose. Go back to whining about other things Nicky. You ain’t fooling us.

    • Krys Allen says:

What did he say yesterday, i missed the interview…

    • Tom says:

I have been watching some of these interviews today, specifically the Nick Saban interview with Steve Spurrier sitting by him. The media really blows all of this out of proportion, and it makes me sick that I fell for it. IMO, Saban wasn’t disrespecting OU, he said that the game was extremely important and that OU was a great program, which nobody reported. He was saying that after winning the title 3 out of 4 years, and just having their heart broke at Auburn, that he had to get them out of their funk to go play in the Sugar Bowl. I think OU got Alabama’s best shot, I think Saban got them motivated, and OU won a great game between two great programs. I am done with this Alabama/Sugar Bowl nonsense, I am ready for 2014 and the quest for 8!

Without even clicking on that TW article, I knew in advance who had written it. Nobody busts on the Sooners more than Hoover.

    • Jordan Esco says:

A lot of times, or at least last year, I felt like most of his criticisms were valid. But this one was just beyond idiotic, IMO. No worries tho, nobody bats 1.000

    • cpearc00 says:

I get his twitter updates on my Bleacher Report app. Based on his tweets, he seems to be a big TU homer.

The defense will never be at the level it was 15 or even 10 years ago there are too many rules protecting the offensive players. A safety can’t light up a receiver coming across the middle the way they used to be able to, making the receiver think twice before catching that same ball later in the game. The defense is just limited now and the spread offense isn’t impossible to stop; but it does make it more difficult for defenses and teams that run the spread will get some yards. Just my opinion on it.

    Wow on the mayfly pic!

  • Jeremy Phillips says:

Is Stoops doing the carwash today or tomorrow?

  • Tom says:

Interesting that both Fox and ESPN did surveys with the Big 12 players and in Fox survey the players said OU was the best team, but according to ESPN,players said Baylor….

    • FeedtheMonster says:

Yeah, those Baylor fans are impressive, all 45,000 of them! I think they can brag when they have the home record over a decade and a half that OU does.

  • Zack says:

Anyone else think it’s not a good thing that bob will be at the car wash event while a recruit is on campus for a visit later today?

    • Zack says:

He’s welcome to do what he wants I just think these recruits are excited to see bob, although if Monty is there I still like the odds of closing the deal on Mann.

    • Jordan Esco says:

He’ll be back in Norman tonight I’m sure.

    • FeedtheMonster says:

Of all the reasons not to be there to see him, I think this one is probably the most acceptable to a recruit.

  • Jared William Reininger says:

AJ’s last game. Not to mention a ton of other players. And they just decided to let us have it? Bama fans are ridiculous. Can’t wait for the media to get off their tit.

Also, I was at Bedlam this year…it was pathetic. I had to originally sit with OSU fans cause I got tickets from someone at the university…..I can’t describe how insanely rude they were. ONE guy was polite and friendly, everyone else literally threatened me when I would cheer. I sat on the Texas side at the RRR and for the most part, the Texas fans were polite. Pretty bad when the donghorns are better people than the cowgirls.

    • Eric Hoffpauir says:

OU also never gets a pass for losing bowl games in years where we aren’t in the NC game.

    • Eric Hoffpauir says:

The OSU rudeness isn’t limited to OU players and fans. They are awful to other fanbases and players as well.

    • paganpink says:

I had my truck keyed after OSU lost to OU. Classy bunch. There isn’t an OSU fan alive it seems that roots for OU when we play out of conference in bowls and the like as OU fans do for them!

      • Jared William Reininger says:

My buddy told me to park my truck in his garage and just get a ride from him. He is a huge OSU fan but he is also more or less family so while we talk trash he has always had the greatest respect. But I can count on one hand the amount of other OSU fans I would say have any respect for OU. One has said, “We are taking over the bedlam series!” 1-9…..you guys are doing great…..keep it up.

      • Kody K. says:

I am truly sorry you had to endure such inexcusable malfeasance from a low life idiot.–From one Sooner fan to another.
Nonsense that you can’t display your teams logo on your vehicle without fear of it being damaged.

  • Jeremy Phillips says:

    Bob, slingin lasers today…

  • soonermusic says:

I’m wondering if DGB might stay both years, assuming all goes well, even if his waiver is approved.

  • ToatsMcGoats says:

    LOL! “What region is that?”

  • Adriana Ortiz says:

BAMA FANS ARE ” THE ” WORST FANS IN COLLEGE FOOTBALL. IF THEY DON’T WIN THEY ALL MAKE EXCUSES AND THEN THEIR LEADERS ASSAULT ,RAPE, SHOOT OR KILL TREES . ONE FAN ( WOMAN ) SHOT ANOTHER FAN (WOMAN ) A FEW YEARS AGO BECAUSE WHEN BAMA LOST THE SECOND WOMAN DIDN’T SHOW ENOUGH SADNESS ?? WE WILL NEVER FORGET THE BAMA MOTHER THAT LEAPED 3 ROWS DOWN ON TOP OF A GROUP OF SOONER FANS WHO WERE CELBRATING THE JOB OKLAHOMA WAS DOING ON BAMA . WILL NEVER FORGET THE BAMA FAN ( MAN ) SEXUALLY ASSULTED THE LSU FAN ( MAN ) THAT WAS PASSED OUT AFTER THE GAME BY STICKING HIS JUNK IN HIS FACE ON CAMARA . DUMB and SICK AT THE SAME TIME AND WHO WILL EVER FORGET HARVEY UPDIKE-? KILLING THE AUBURN TREES AFTER A LOSS . IF BAMA WOULD EVER SCHEDULE A GOOD OUT OF CONFERENCE OPPONENT THEY WOULD SURELY HAVE MANY MORE INSTANCES TO HANG THEIR HATS ON.

  • DCinAZ says:

Same questions I had about our defense in asking why everybody thought they’d be so good this year. Based on what? Just because Phillips is returning? They didn’t stop anybody last season that wasn’t fundamentally challenged in some way even with Phillips. Who can we really say they shut down last year? Anybody with a pulse moved the ball well on this defense last year through the air and on the ground in spite of us finding ways to win. I know it’s their second year in the system and we have several starters returning but why does everybody think this defense will be so awesome?

    • FeedtheMonster says:

osu had a pretty good offense last year, and they were lucky to reach 24. Kansas State was dang good when we played them and only managed 31. Outside of a few Tyler Lockett, (he’s as good as anyone in the country) plays that game wasn’t close. Also, who else, other than a team that played for a national title held Bama to 31 points?

      • DCinAZ says:

Colorado State, Ole Miss, and Miss State.

        • FeedtheMonster says:

Did they sack A.J. seven times? Did they force 3 turnovers? What about K-State and osu? Do you honestly think texas runs that well on OU if Phillips was healthy?

          • DCinAZ says:

Yes. Notre Dame ran that well on Phillips even with Corey Nelson and Frank Shannon behind him. I mentioned this in another thread and it was like I was speaking Mandarin. This defense at no point has proven they can stop anybody (with a pulse) on the ground no matter who’s in there. I’m not sure why everybody “group thinks” Phillips return means our running game defense woes are over. He’s one guy; a nose guard. Even if he’s back, 100% healthy and plays up to his potential, there were 10 other guys on that unit that couldn’t stop anybody’s running game either (including Kansas).

          • FeedtheMonster says:

I hope you don’t think that I am just trying to argue with you, because I really am trying not to be TOO optimistic, but you’re just not convincing me. In the Notre Dame game Phillips was hurting – coaches have said so. The other guys who play his position weren’t nearly as seasoned as they are now. (the only good part of a starter going down) Yes Phillips is only one guy, but those guys I just mentioned, which there are about four of, got a lot better as the season went along, like I just stated. The Kansas game was inexperience on the part of Alexander who ended up being a Freshman All-American. As for stopping anybody with a pulse: K-State, osu, Bama. I saw a young defense get better and better every week. Any time you bring back EVERYBODY in the front seven, odds are in your favor to be better than the year before.
