FOOTBALL

2014 rule change: So as proposed months ago, the NCAA has “tweaked” the idiotic rule from last year where a player could be penalized for targeting, only to have that call overturned via replay yet the flag still applied. That is no longer the case (yay!). However, if you haven’t already heard they have adopted a different rule that we’ll probably complain about all season. The rule is similar to that already established in the NFL, where you are not allowed to hit a QB at/around/below the knee while they are in a throwing stance. Just a bit of an fyi in case you hadn’t already heard.

Can you really say Trevor Knight is a Heisman sleeper when he’s made so many of those meaningless lists this summer? Apparently so. (SN)

Not entirely sure how I feel about this. Some of it is fair (IMO), but some of it is your typical blustering and generalizations of Stoops you can find just about anywhere. (SoE)

Not much of an update re: Frank Shannon, but it is something (I suppose). (Twitter)

More on Shannon, but still not much. (NewsOK)

‘Agent-gate’ down in Austin isn’t expected to amount to much. (Bylaw Blog)

If you’re in need of a laugh, here is a prediction of OU losing to TCU by two TDs and giving up 34 points to that offense. (ESPN)

Roll Tide. (mySA)

Texas Tech reinstated that kid who punched a female basketball player. (Texas Tech)

This article predicts the potential Big 12 leaders in a handful of categories and there is nary a mention of a single OU player. (NFL)

For anyone who complained about what OU did with their recent alternate uniforms, it could have been worse. Like a lot worse. (UCLA)

BASKETBALL

A quick interview with Lon Kruger. (Campus Insiders)

This AD reaction is absolutely priceless. (The Big Lead)

Doink.

Fire ring, huh?

The announcers almost ruined it for me, but that little woman is pretty damn impressive.

The announcers on America ninja warrior are the worst! Right up there with Brent mussburger

  • Jim says:

    Wow. That girl is impressive!

  • Jim says:

Only 42 days ’til kickoff. Only 44 days ’til OU kickoff. Can’t get here soon enough!!!

  • SoonerfanTU says:

Nice to know there is at least one athletic event I’m better at than AD. 🙂

  • Big Higg says:

When does OU start practicing with coaches & all

  • Sooner Ray says:

A fire hoop above a swimming pool? Come on, put a little risk in the game.

    • vargo05 says:

Exactly. Now a fire hoop above a pool of gasoline? That’s just pure fun there.

  • outsider says:

Those ucla uniforms crack me up…”LA Steel”? Are there even any steel mills in LA?

  • lovethemsooners says:

Consider the source on the sEcSPiN prediction. Isn’t Olson a horn homer?

  • Tom says:

Bob Stoops career is quite good enough? Only somebody who has never coached could write an article like that.

  • EasTex says:

    R.I.P. Johnny Winter.

    • Boom says:

Love Blues and Johnny Winter. Sad to see him go but he left us a lot of great music.

      • WilliamJack says:

Totally agree! Great blues player. Edgar (keyboards) was more popular commercially but Johnny was the better of the imho.

        • EasTex says:

Day by day, all the icons from my youth are leaving us.

          • Boom says:

I agree with you and I miss a lot of the old blues & rock guys. Driving down the road and I saw Skynyrd was playing at a large Casino and it just bums me out to know there is only one person still alive from that group. Duane & SRV to numerous others who I still listen too are gone. Loved how Raw Johnny’s music was and he will be missed.

          • EasTex says:

Eat A Peach is in my car’s cd rotation.
I used to see SRV for a buck every Monday night in Austin, before he got famous.

          • Boom says:

got Pandora and have my own Allman bro station along with JW. Loved the old JM & Muddy songs. The best.

      • EasTex says:

I had to do a tribute for JW.

    • soonermusic says:

Will have to play Highway 61 Revisited today, his version was simply the best…

  • Jared William Reininger says:

The prediction that we lose to TCU is hilarious. Max Olson is a horner homer. And am I the only one not buying into the Baylor hype this year. Sure they got some big pieces coming back but they lost a ton of defensive talent. I don’t think they will be able to stop a stone from rolling uphill this year.

    • Jordan Esco says:

I think they’re the 2nd best team in the Big 12, but as you’ve said if they can’t stop anyone (which I suspect will be the case) then I’m not sure how they can win the league simply by outscoring everyone.

      • Jared William Reininger says:

I heard a Baylor fan I work with say, “Well OU used to just outscore everyone…” But I think he forgets that we fielded a good defense that year too. I think they are #2 as well. But I also think a lot of teams are going to figure out how to cover their offense. I mean we did for pretty much a half and could have the whole game had our offense of gameplan…..existed?

  • BigJoeBrown says:

Beat by TCU, No Big 12 leaders? Looks like there is some bulletin board material in here.

  • EasTex says:

Don’t care for the UCLA designs, but I love that techfit material. Makes it very difficult to grab onto. First heard about it here where defending state champion Carthage introduced them.

  • EasTex says:

And yet I’m not sure if there’s ever been a potentially iconic coach who
inspires more ambivalence among his fan base than Bob Stoops

    Whiskey Tango Foxtrot!
How many OU fans has this guy ever talked to?
He should talk to some LSU fans and see how they feel about him. I have relatives that are all LSU grads and fans and they were screaming for a new coach last year.

    • soonermusic says:

Not to diminish his well deserved status as the exalted great one, but Wilkinson didn’t just blaze through like a comet and then retire on top at 47 either, as the article appeared to imply. He ended on a down note, including back to back 3-6-1 and 5-5 seasons. He hung on for two more ok seasons, bouncing back a bit, but it was pretty much over by then.

    • ICTSooner says:

Eastex you’re right, OU fans attitude towards our coach has always seemed off a bit to me. He runs a clean program, recruits quality young men who are tremendous athletes, does charity work for sick kids behind the scenes. He’s a devout christian, in short he’s the type of man I’d want to coach my son, a man you’d trust to watch over your kids. He’s tough but fair just as my old man is. The disconnect comes from his Ohio upbringing. People say he comes of as rude and arrogant, they couldn’t be more wrong. He’s a straight shooter who says what he believes without filtering it through the southern charm that we are used to in this part of the country. We have what is called “tact” and Bob is in very short supply. We’ve all seen his press conferences, always good for a laugh. Stoops suffers no fools. Oh yeah and lets not forget he’s a great coach, be careful what you wish for fellow Sooner fans-Boomer 8n2014

      • EasTex says:

I think you have taken the blockquote from the SOE article and attributed it to me. That’s why I said Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, I disagree that Coach Stoops “inspires more ambivalence among his fanbase.”
He’s a great coach and an even better man.

  • DCinAZ says:

If you need another laugh, look how hard Paul Myerberg over at USA Today had to work to bag on the BIG XII and make it out to be the worst P5 conference.

Does Kacy have any years of eligibility left? I watched that live and wondered if OU might take her as a pure athlete. Ridiculous
