FOOTBALL

I don’t know if you’re (1) reading this, (2) are on Twitter, and/or (3) if we follow any of the same people, but something has stood out to me these past two days as we approach the first release of the CFB committee rankings. Why is the media who are allowed access to said committee on such a crusade to convince the rest of us just how right the committee is going about things? Sorry, just had to get that off my chest.

Josh Heupel’s foundation food drive will take place on Nov. 8, the weekend of the Baylor game. (Facebook)

I feel obligated to post this, only reason I’m doing so.

There are some good things in this Rolling Stone (yes, for some reason Rolling Stone magazine felt compelled to address the ESPN-SEC bias extravaganza) article, but yet it still reads like the rantings of a crazy Florida State fan (if you’re familiar with #FSUTwitter, you get it). And that might be because the author of the story….is a FSU grad. (Rolling Stone)

Hold on….prepare yourself….wait for it….tell me how excited you’d be for an OU vs. Duke match up in the Russell Athletic Bowl. (ESPN)

RECRUITING

I should have posted this on Monday, but here is OU 2015 commit Austin Seibert hitting a 70-yard field goal in pregame warmups. Just slightly impressive. And how ridiculous is it to think about when the camera pans over to show the ball is set up on the 40-yard line opposite mid-field?

Charlie Strong is getting desperate if this is actually true. (BON)

At this point I am not sure why so many people are in lather about the current rankings in the CFP. There is really a lot of football to be played and at the end of the year the biggest issue will probably be what 2-loss team is deserving of the spot.

    • blaster1371 says:

True. However, with three sec teams starting so high it is conceivable that the sec champ and a two loss sec team get in over a one loss team. Starting so high early means they have to fall which would not be more than a few slots ( think how long South Carolina hung around the last several years) and if anyone above them loses they jump right back up. If Oregon had a defense I am pretty sure they would be in the top four. If OU had beaten TCU they would be dang close. Seems like when any other conference begins beating up on itself its elimination and when sec teams do it its elevation. The talking heads keep talking about how beating Texass a and m means something….. That team is poop.

      • Bluegrass Sooner says:

That is normal logical thinking of how past polls have worked, but I don’t think we really know how this committee is going to look at things. They might be willing to have teams make huge jumps and also huge drops between polls. It will be interesting to see how they handle things going forward, especially as some of these sec teams beat up on each other the next few weeks.

      • SoonerfanTU says:

I don’t think a 2 loss SEC teams gets over a 1 loss team like KSU, TCU, Oregon, or Michigan State. If that is what some of you are worried about, I’d chill out some, b/c I really don’t think it’ll play out like that.

  • Jeremy Phillips says:

My biggest problem is that this committee is no different than the AP poll voters or coaches poll voters.. They all have bias’s.. Wouldn’t an independent set of mathematical equations that not only takes into account the polls but also calculates SOS, margin of victory, home or away & any number of other factors be a more reasonable way to choose the playoff teams..? Im sure there has never been such a system, which is probably why there isn’t one for this…

    • Sooner1988 says:

Jeff Sagarin has a mathematical formula that takes into account most of the factors you listed above. Google him and you’ll find his rankings for this year.

      • Sooner1988 says:

BTW, you may gag at his top 5 but understand that the model gets more fine tuned with additional input from future games.

        • Jeremy Phillips says:

I was being sarcastic.. Trying to make a point that a playoffs incorporating the BCS formula would be the ideal way to choose playoff teams, if it stays at 4.. If we go to 8 however, then a committee would make sense..

      • Malicong says:

Even the Sagarin ratings have a slant. It is what he perceives as important getting a higher curve in his formula. For example, he has Tennessee at 3-5 as the 36th best team but a 3-5 Texas as the 54th best team. Tennessee’s only wins were Utah St, Ark St, and Tenn-Chatt. Texas has 2 wins vs. P5 schools and all 5 of their losses have come against teams that have been in the top 25 this year. But because Tennessee lost to two top 10 teams (destroyed is more like it), they are somehow 20 spots better. That gives the SEC the appearance of have a higher SOS. Even though Tennessee had no chance against any of the ranked teams they played, they are now a top 50 win for the other SEC schools, whereas Texas is only a top 100 win for the Big XII. He has Mississippi with the 7th highest SOS even thought they have only played 2 teams in the top 25 of the AP poll and played no P5 schools in non-con.

    • Guest says:

Didn’t you basically just describe the BCS?

    • outsider says:

      It was called the BCS

  • Soonerfandave84 says:

Cant complain to much about where the B12 stands…TCU is in position to make the Playoff and OU is the top ranked 2 loss team(WVU 2 spots back)…40% of the league is in the top 20. With so many games still ahead between all those SEC teams…Its like TCU or KSU win out and they are in. OU could still win out with some luck make the Cotton Bowl

  • Indy_sooner says:

Done bitchin about the SEC, honestly. We had an opportunity to build the momentum from the spring and make a case for the 12. To beat Bama and then losing to the likes of TCU and KSU does not help us make our case. We could win out the season and it’s still a Meh

    • Swanny says:

Both of those teams are legit. The KSU loss stings because we played so much better than the two weeks prior and Moneycutt pissed away our chance to win. If KSU hadn’t left 16 points on the field against Auburn, they’d be #3 in the nation right now.

      • Indy_sooner says:

No disrespect to either of them but we could and should have whooped both of them. handily. It’s getting old being everybody’s capstone win. Last year it was Baylor and (F)Texas, this year it is TCU and KSU and who know who else. We simply are not there

        • Swanny says:

I couldn’t disagree with you more. Boykin is a legit Heisman candidate, and they just dropped 82 points on a D1 team. If it wasn’t for a crazy 4th quarter against Baylor they’d be undefeated. Coming into this season, I would’ve said we would roll TCU and KSU. Now watching them play they’re as good as we are, and on those days they were better. That’s not a knock on us, as much as a compliment to them. My great hope is that we finish the year 11-2, and get some momentum. This team has been geared to make a run next season. I’ve been saying that even before the year started. Our depth at key positions (LB, QB, and WR) gets significantly deeper next season due to suspensions this year. If our fan base doesn’t go lemur and jump off a cliff we’ll be fine.

          • Indy_sooner says:

That there is my problem. A team that is ranked #4 doesn’t validate a loss by gauging the other team’s subsequent performance or their “near unbeaten records.” That’s complacency and has been the same excuse used for years. The point I was going for is that the coaches should have schemed better for the threat Boykin posed. That’s why they are paid loads
Also, I could give two flips about TTU. Everybody on this planet knows Kliff is a joke. If we do not nail them silly, I will be very disappointed.

  • F1at1ined says:

Austin Seibert looks awesome already. I know some fans may worry about losing Honeycutt as he’s been very reliable all of his Sooner career minus a bad day or two, but Seibert just looks like a heck of a weapon with powerful range. For all of Honeycutt’s accuracy, he never has looked like he could power through a 55 yarder.

    • Jordan Esco says:

I think it will be really interesting to see if they allow him to kick & punt. I believe he’s also the top rated punter in the country.

      • Josh says:

I’m all for it. Been around football as player or coach for 30 of 35 years on this planet and for 30 out of 35 years I’ve hated kickers. One less kicker sounds optimal to me.

      • j l says:

hes the #2 punter, unless the rankings have changed.

        • Jordan Esco says:

Thanks. I almost hedged just a bit by saying ‘at worst No. 2’ and now obviously should have. Appreciate the correction tho.

      • boomersooner says:

the only thing there that’s a negative is if he gets hurt, then you lose both but its definitely a risk worth taking to save a scholarship and whatnot

  • HoustonChiver says:

I’d be interested in another match-up w/A&M in a bowl game. Would like to shut them up, all I hear about down here in Houston is “hey, remember the 2012 cotton bowl?”

    • outsider says:

do remember “WE” are not as good as “advertised”

      • HoustonChiver says:

Would have to agree with that on the QB situation. If we aren’t as good as advertised, how would you describe that steaming turd pile the aggies put on the field each week?!

        • Pokerman says:

Sick of the denigration of Knight. He looked pretty darned good when he had three good receivers on the field with him and was allowed to run the whole offense.

          • Krys Allen says:

Agreed, TK is not even close to our biggest problem.

          • HoustonChiver says:

Agree to disagree? He did not look good during any game last year outside of the sugar bowl. Maybe he’s just a guy who shines in the spotlight, which is great, but we need consistency. This year he has been hindered by play calling but is still inconsistent as ever.

    • CS says:

For that to happen, A&M might need to win at least few more games, which seem highly impossible at the moment.

  • CS says:

Only TTech can get a commitment after getting nearly 100 hung on them. Dont get it!

    • SoonerfanTU says:

Was it a defensive guy? That would be pretty funny.

      • Brian says:

WR out of Dallas Skyline…Carlos Strickland.

But you could see where a defensive guy would commit. He’d see how much help they need and could be an instant impact player…because they’re so bad!

  • thebigdroot says:

You want to see the SEC explode, have Bob Stoops repeat this paragraph in an interview:
“Three SEC teams have yet to record a conference win, going a combined 0-13 so far in league play. Five of the conference’s teams are .500 or worse. Tennessee hasn’t turned in a winning season since Obama’s first year in office. Florida has won just seven of its last 19 games. LSU, South Carolina and Texas A&M haven’t lived up to preseason expectations, and Arkansas is Vanderbilt now.”

  • leatherneck1061 says:

Seibert looks great. But personally I find it really difficult right now after another underperforming/ruined season to get real excited over a new place kicker. No disrespect intended.
