Can’t wait for The Boz’s ’30 for 30′ tonight, but in the meantime….’In Praise of Brian Bosworth’s Forgotten Action Masterpiece ‘Stone Cold’ (Grantland)

Some ridiculous OU/ISU series statistics. (Cyclone Fanatic)

This further addresses what I linked to yesterday re: Chris Fowler’s “ESPN doesn’t have an SEC bias” rant and, IMO, this Terry Johnson guy absolutely nailed it. (TSS)

Texas arrogance at its finest.

There are a lot of dumb things said on Twitter every single day, but yesterday, in my TL, this was by far the dumbest. It’s not that hard to be accurate when 90% of your passes are five yards of less.

Speaking of Colt….What exactly did this PR guy think was about to go down here? No means no, seriously? Settle down, bro. (Deadspin)

OTHER

Bad day at the office.

There are some special people in this world, my friends.

This is about ping-pong, right? What am I missing. Also, my favorite part is the half-hearted effort of the two guys (yes, guys) “fighting” over who gets to take home dude’s shirt.

This kid is awesome.

I thought Stone Cold was an awesome movie……there’s a slim chance I may have been wasted.

I constantly have to remind people that the UT coaching staff gave Colt McCoy #12 to remind him how far he was allowed to pass the ball.

As for Fowler, ESPN and the SEC, I’ve given up on Game Day for quite some time, now. That show used to start my Saturday’s. If I had to take my kids to soccer, football, dance, or baseball practice, it was like, you’re kidding me: I’m missing Game Day.

I haven’t cared in a few years if I miss it or not. I only want to know what time my Sooners are on and what channel.

I will say this about ESPN. It’s a positive, sort of: somehow, the executives there have managed to do what so many Fortune 500 companies fail to do, they’ve managed to get all of their college gurus thinking the same thing: the SEC is superior. I’ve never witnessed that in business or in general conversation: two guys arguing passionately or an employer and it’s employees are in 100% agreement. I mean, isn’t there anyone on the set that thinks differently. That’s lightning in a bottle, right there, sweet sticks.

Now the negative for ESPN, not sort of: They clearly do not care about diversity, varying opinions, ideas, beliefs. They need to get with their HR partners, pronto.

Finally, if ESPN continues to allow Chris Fowler and anyone else on that set to think they don’t have to be careful about its clients, they will feel the sting one day. Even if it’s not true, the SEC bias, it would be wise to consider how you are perceived.

To me, the SEC bias is obvious. I don’t normally watch Game Day, I only tune in from time to time, but when I do I am constantly reminded of why I don’t watch. So far in the few times I have watched, I have heard how the 4 team playoff is better system because it allows the four best teams to prove they are the best and this should always include at least 2 SEC teams (this particular person outright said that the SEC ALWAYS has at least two of the four best teams). That the SEC was really the only conference that anyone cares about. That teams from other conferences can’t compete with the strength and coaching of the SEC teams (you know, because all SEC coaches help each other and they all share an offseason workout program). That the loss of the SEC’s star players didn’t matter because SEC always produces the best players and new stars will be created. That even a 2 loss SEC team should be in the playoff because, well just because their the SEC, it doesn’t matter if they actually played a hard schedule.
Chris Fowler may not have a bias towards the SEC, but when they constanly harp about how the SEC is superior in every way, especially when it is NOT TRUE, there is a culture of bias.

  • SamSooner says:

Here’s an idea to test the SEC supremacy: take their top teams and let them play an entire non-conference schedule against the Big 12, B1G, PAC 16, and ACC. Be like the Romans: send your army out an conquer the other conferences. Let’s see how that works. Let Alabama, Auburn go out and take the full slate of the Big 12. Let Tennessee and Georgia take on the B1G, and so forth. If they dominate, I will give them their props.

  • Krys Allen says:

The most frustrating part of the SEC ESPN bias in my opinion has more to do with recruiting than the playoffs. I think the committee will be smarter than just buying into ESPN hype. However, future recruits are all watching ESPN because its the main place to get sports coverage. So all of these recruits are getting recruited to the SEC by ESPN every time they turn the channel on and I wish the NCAA would take issue with that.

    • SamSooner says:

Krys, good point. However, that is the same thing that could set the SEC back for years. These kids are smart and good athletes. While they want to compete, they also want to play. When kids start to going elsewhere, it could take the SEC several years to recover. I am as competitive as anyone. But I don’t want to go play for a team that has signed the number-one rated wide receiver for four consecutive years.

      • Krys Allen says:

Thats why its almost worse that they are peddling the whole SEC vs just say Alabama. There are 16 teams, so plenty of places for young athletes to choose from, especially now that Miss/TAMU have moved. So Bama gets a #1 reciever this year, Auburn the next, TAMU the next etc.
Just imagine if you didn’t live in Big12 country and you were getting recruited by Kstate and Ole Miss. Both have the same records, but one has been on college gameday at least once and been continually hyped, while the other just quietly wins.

    • soonermusic says:

It’s easy to think that the committee will be “smarter,” but you have to ask what networks will the committee be watching the games on. All you have to do is look at the comments after any game to see how the announcers’ perspective colors how we see the game. So I would suspect that ESPN bias will influence the committee whether they want it to, or not.

  • Soonerfandave84 says:

ESPN doesnt have a bias…They told me so, as did Brent Musberger on the SEC Network

  • boomersooner says:

Everything with the sec perpetuates itself. It seems ESPN’s recruiting stops in Texas for the most part. I’m betting there’s some pretty good players in the mountain and pacific time zones. Most of em play softy OOC schedules. Plus they get to play 4 of em because they’re scared to play 9 conf games. They do play those early “classics” or whatever they’re called but the neutral sites ain’t neutral. Look at bama-the only home and home they’ve played since Sabans been there is Penn St awhile ago and fla never leaves the state except for conf road games. If you were in the west and lucked out and UK and vandy on the schedule, your schedule would include OM, MSU, AR, vandy and UK. Add in 3 or 4 cupcakes and its BCS time. So that’s why they have 94 bowl tie ins because its not that hard to be eligible. Which brings me to those bowls. Where are they played? Jacksonville, Tampa, Memphis, Nashville, Atlanta, etc etc. They don’t have to travel. All their teams and fans live in nice little bubble worlds and when people start to call them on it, they get loud and bring out the curse words and say you’re stupid. I lived in the midst of it for 22 yrs. Not saying there’s no good teams or they don’t all have some sort of talent. Its just tiring when “the worldwide leader in sports” thinks its the only way to play football and everybody else should just quit
