“Sooners are in chaos”. Thanks Boz for playing right into the hands of ESPN. Florida is in chaos. Michigan is in chaos. OU certsinly doesn’t mirror either of those programs. Confused, maybe. Doubting itself, could be. But no chaos. If OU was losing by 25 points pregame and sitting at 2-5. I could entertain the idea it was in chaos.

    • Sooner_Ace says:

Correct me if I am wrong, but the relationship between Boz and Stoops always has been a bit contentious, so the chaos comments are not exactly shocking imho

    • ratman says:

It is according how you want to define chaos. I wouldn’t call it chaos, but I would call it not a very well coached football team in all categories.

  • Sooner Ray says:

I hope the actual 30 for 30 show is better than the interviews he’s doing.

    • Boom says:

Curious, what do you see wrong in his interviews. It’s a hard thing to look back at the chaos you caused both for OU and in his own family.

      • Sooner Ray says:

I don’t know if I would use the word “wrong”. If it was intended to be a teaser, I thought he was rather dry and didn’t peak anyone’s interest that doesn’t already know some of the back story. Maybe I just remember Boz more than I do Brian.

Yo, Jordan, did you decide to Groundhog Day us? Check title date.
    Heh.

  • OUknowitscomin says:

‘OU fans deserve better’……..that entitled sentence not only reflects an entitled fan base, but also kinda disgusts me with it’s tenor. We lost by 5pts total, with a struggling O & depth issues on D, to 2 high quality opponents.
Sounds like something I’d expect to see in a woman’s magazine truthfully, ‘You DESERVE this!’ Prima Donna as heck.

  • Jason Hicks says:

Regarding that stadium video. My wife’s from Donetsk and I’ve been to that stadium a couple of times. It was really impressive…even for Ukraine. The in-laws are still there as are brother and sister-in-law. And, looks like Ukraine is going to launch a new offensive on the city in the next few days.

Crazy video though. You don’t think God wasn’t looking down on that little girl?

  • ToatsMcGoats says:

Horning hit the nail right on the head, and, ya know what? So did Mandel.

    • soonermusic says:

Clay Hornung totally misses the boat.

First, if K-State goes 10 – 2 this year, no one will be ranting and screaming about how Bill Snyder has “lost it.” Stoops understands that the expectations for him are different, and that what will matter is that he win the most games possible by the end of the season. One excellent drive by the backup qb in which virtually all of the plays were handoffs doesn’t change the evaluation that he’s far better off with Trevor at the helm.

Second, the offense that the Sooners ran on Saturday was every bit as unpredictable as K-State. You might think at any given point that you knew what was coming next, but I guarantee you that no defensive coordinator watching those drives up and down the field is gonna feel comfortable. They put incredible pressure on the K-State defense, and the statistics prove it.

Third, Stoops comments about it being “complicated” were totally taken out of context. It was clear that he was referring to the issue of K-State having linemen blocking downfield, and then suddenly it’s a pass play. That’s why he used the word “complicated.” He wasn’t just making a lame statement about how the qb run/pass game works, he was specifically referencing the issue they had on the Gronkowski play and a couple of others. Hornung completely missed that.

Same with Mandel. Typical reflection of online nonsense. Of course the rebuttal is in part right there in his article. If Hunnicutt makes that field goal “we’re might not even be having this conversation.” If the difference between “Big Game Bob” and “Complacent Bob” is one missed field goal by Hunnicutt, then we still shouldn’t be having this conversation, imho.

His comment that the Sugar Bowl ” clearly turned out not to be a realistic reflection of (knight’s) ability” is all wet. It’s not clear at all, In fact as far as I’m concerned, his performance Saturday was very much in the ball park with his bowl game.

      • ToatsMcGoats says:

Nope. I don’t think the opinion on whether or not Bob has become complacent or conservative hinges on Hunnicut making or missing that field goal. This has been a topic of conversation for at least a couple of seasons now.

The offense looked better vs. K State, but it doesn’t change the fact that a lot of readers on this site, myself included, have talked about the predictability of this offense. Just read some of the game threads.

And, if K State goes 10-2 this year, you’re right, nobody will be ranting that Snyder has lost it…but that’s not the point. The point is, Snyder’s crew overachieved, as they usually do, while Stoops’ crew underachieved, as they usually do.

I’m not going to rant on Knight…God knows he’s had more than a few things to deal with (Heuple, poor play from receivers), but he really hasn’t had the type of game this season that he had against Bama, so I would think that it’s fair to make the assumption that he isn’t as good as that game indicated, even if I don’t agree with it.

Mandel’s article echoes some of the same sentiments I wrote on here a few days back. There are no real super powers left in the Big XII, yet here we stand in 2014, and OU hasn’t won an outright conference championship for how long? If Stoops isn’t overpaid for the product that he puts on the field, then Mark Richt needs a raise….

        • soonermusic says:

Agree to disagree. It’s been a topic for a few seasons, because it’s always gonna be a topic any time the team loses a game or two, or in fact just doesn’t win by the margin that fans think he should or that they “deserve,” as the article suggests. Even comes up if all they do is miss out on a recruit.

When the team wins as they did at the end of last year and “overacheived” by beating Alabama, it was not an issue. No one ventured that he was complacent after the coaching changes that everyone liked, the “house cleaning” of problem players, and the last few games last year. But as soon as the team doesn’t perform as perfectly as some folks would like them to, he’s “lost it,” or never had it.

This is the typical reaction of every fickle fan base in the country. It is not OU-centric, nor is it related to the facts. Heupel isn’t “holding Knight back” when the team fails to execute properly, and sudden become brilliant when the team does. He’s not tied up with duct tape nor is someone else calling the plays as many have seriously speculated whenever he has a good game. In the same way, Stoops’ competence hasn’t changed or vacillated back and forth. The only thing that changes is the fans’ opinions based upon “what have you done for me lately” results.

          • ToatsMcGoats says:

Agree to disagree indeed. But I have to say, I don’t know how else to feel when Bob Stoops himself says that the team had one of, if not the best off season(s) since he’s been here…then they underperform. It would be different, too, if the mistakes that Bob keeps saying are “easy fixes” are actually fixed and we didn’t see the same mistakes every single game. It will be very telling if “one of the best recruiting classes” that Stoops has ever had (2013) pans out, or if they fizzle. I guess the argument of “sometimes kids don’t reach their full potential” could be made, but it is very rarely made when speaking of K State players. It seems as though they are always spoken of as overachieving. They have similar success with less talent. I think it comes down to coaching, but I could be wrong. Also, I’d like to add that I’ve never personally heard anyone refer to Heuple or his game plan as “brilliant”. Good? Yes. Brilliant? No.

Heuple’s game planning isn’t consistent, which would lead to fans having differing opinions of him. He called a great game against Bama, but the players also had a great game, which made him look even better. But then again, there’s Baylor 2013. Bell as a throwing QB…Knight in to run the read option…as soon as it starts looking promising, put Bell back in…no identity…etc. Heuple himself has implied that he had no real intentions of using Knight as a running QB, even though he looked fantastic doing so toward the end of last season. I get the fan frustration with Heuple.

I personally don’t think that Bob is “complacent”, but rather his success was/is largely based on how good his assistant coaches are (which is the case with almost every coach). I do think that he talks up his “10 win seasons” a little too much. I think he believes that it should be good enough to win 10 games a season, but here’s the deal: there are coaches out there who can win 10 games in the Big XII that aren’t making +$5 million. Fans were talking about how he needed a raise when he won championships…he gets these raises…the teams stop winning championships…it’s very understandable that they fans would be upset with this. At least I think so.

          • soonermusic says:

No other coach in the Big 12 comes close to Stoops’ winning percentage. Even after “all the losses” of the past few seasons. Not one.

          • ToatsMcGoats says:

No, I meant other coaches period. Not just in the Big XII.

          • soonermusic says:

Ok. Whom did you have in mind?

I actually think this does get to the heart of the matter.

Unless you want Urban Meyer, (and can get him) there’s no other coach in the Big Ten, no coach in the Pac 12, none in the ACC or the SEC who comes close to Stoops’ winning percentage, in other words no major college coach anywhere. That makes me think that Stoops is on pretty solid ground when he talks about the number of wins he has each year.

          • ToatsMcGoats says:

Whoa…did I say win percentage? I said that there were other coaches not making $5 mil plus that could win 10 games a season in the Big XII. I firmly believe that Mark Richt could, Jimbo Fisher, Art Briles is looking pretty good right about now, Brian Kelly, Gus Malzahn, I’m sure there’s more, including Meyer. I didn’t say I wanted them, either. I’m just saying that if Stoops is making more than these guys, he should produce more consistently than he does, and by “produce” I mean championships, whether it be conference, or Natty’s.

          • soonermusic says:

            re: “whoa…”

            Hey Toats,

Certainly not trying to put words in your mouth. Sorry if you thought I was. And all due respect to your arguments.

I think that what matters most in the end is how many times each season we have to endure talking about a loss, rather than enjoying a victory. To that end, winning percentage is the best measure. You can also talk about most wins and fewest losses, although that can hurt those who haven’t played as many games overall. And OU comes out on top of both of those during the Stoops era as well.

For me, I don’t get too caught up in the discussion about how much the guy is earning, because from my perspective it’s joke money anyway. 🙂 The real person in me says the whole thing is ridiculous. The fan in me says, just pay whatever the market demands in order to keep the winning guy here. I also happen to like his style, so I’m easily convinced on that as well.

You have to judge those guys on their record. I think the evidence is there that winning 10 games a year in the Big 12 is much harder than it looks. I would not be at all so quick to say those guys would be in Bob’s league in that regard.

Comparing on the dimension that you suggest, conference championships and natty’s, you probably know the numbers, but here they are: Malzahn and Briles have only one season apiece in which they’ve produced either a major conference championship or a natty; Jimbo, Kelly, Richt and Meyer have 2 seasons each. Stoops has 8. As many as all 4 of the latter of them combined. It’s just not even close. So if that’s what you’re basing salary on, Stoops has a good case to be making more.

    • hemisooner says:

I agree. We used to play like the underdog that had nothing to lose. Now we are way too conservative.

    • tfb_fortyseven says:

Totally agree Toats. Bob is overpaid for the product he has been creating since the 2008 NC loss. I believe Saban is the only coach paid more, but don’t quote me on that. Didn’t his wife try hard / lobby hard to get 36th Street moved so people wouldn’t have easy access to their house?

      • ToatsMcGoats says:

Is that true? If so, that’s completely ridiculous…

        • tfb_fortyseven says:

Yeah, about 3 years ago with the local chamber … I just re-verified it with my ‘source’. They are sooo different from Barry. I can see why Boz has difficulties with Stoops … totally different people.

    A Tale of Two Fanbases
Group 1 – Stoops and OU are OK. It’s not a big deal that we lose games that inhibit playing for an NC. It’s bound to happen. We are way better off than others. Let’s just play better next time.
Group 2 – Stoops and OU are not OK. We should be better prepared and play better with the talent we have. The loses are inconsistent with OU tradition and expectations. The program is drifting into irrelevance.

    • soonermusic says:

Group 3-Stoops and OU are OK (mostly). It is a very big deal when we lose games that inhibit playing for a NC. It does, however, happen to every top program, and OU’s consistent level of success during the Stoops’ era is unrivaled. We are way better off than the others.
