Trevor Knight’s Status Still Up In The Air

Image via CBS Sports

During Monday morning’s Big 12 conference call, Bob Stoops was asked about the status of quarterback Trevor Knight. As you might expect, Stoops didn’t have much to say on the subject. He stated that Knight “continues to improve” but that he “will not practice this week.” Stoops said they will reassess things next Monday, the week of the Bedlam game.

Poor kid, he really got jacked up.

    • Jed says:

I pray very hard that Oakman suffers a complete tear of his MCL and ACL. Nothing that really ruins his quality of life, just something that say, makes selling used cars a lot more likely a career choice than playing in the NFL.

      • Soonerfan1 says:

That’s awful! Oakman did not hurt him intentionally. He is just much bigger then TK.

        • Jed says:

And I disagree with you on the intent part. I watched and rewatched that play. It was fully intentional. Hope he walks like a spider all the cursed days of his life. In great pain.

  • hOUligan says:

Mainly very happy that TK is upright, mobile and has his health. As to his football future, IMO doesn’t need to come back this season. Evaluate in the spring whether he can come back. Think we will see the writing on the wall if QB recruiting picks up with Chason or the Braxton Miller thing. Can imagine Miller and DGB together for one year while the pups grow up.

    • blaster1371 says:

Braxton Miller? Have you heard anything or are you just “wondering” ( not a jab )?

      • hOUligan says:

Only a rumor all over the Scout board. Doubt it comes to anything but just wondering what bringing in a proven talent like Miller for 1 year might do to keep DGB at OU for 1 year. Intriguing at the very least.

    • Boom says:

hOUligan, you make a real good point in regards to DGB & possibly Shepherd. We need a QB to keep these NFL guys so my hope is BS has a game plan and a great sales pitch.

    • SoonerFan11 says:

Baker mayfield is the one that will keep those guys around….. The chemistry he has built with DGB on the scout team will prove to be more critical than anyone could have thought….

      • hOUligan says:

Really have high hopes for Mayfield from what little we are hearing about his time with the scout team, as you said. Just beginning to look at QB depth now with TK’s injuries piling up and Mayfield only having 2 years to play and ??? about whether Cody truly has the ability to be an effective championship caliber QB.

        • SoonerFan11 says:

Umm…. I have heard Stoops say on both his radio show and interviews that DGB and Mayfield share scout team players of the week honors nearly every week, thats good enough for me think it might make difference…. You make it sound like we should think about adding an experienced JUCO QB???

    • Dd992emo says:

      QB recruiting? Two words…Mason Fine…

  • Kamiar Mehrabian says:

From what I’ve been hearing, I would be guessing that we’re not gonna see TK9 for the rest of the season. His body seems very fragile and injury prone. I hope he gets rest, but this also means Oklahoma could easily go 8-5 instead of 10-3. Really a shame, but Perine can only run over so many people. Can’t have success with a qb that plays like it’s his first time, all the time.

    • SoonerFan11 says:

Its a unique injury for sure…. But I am sorry I disagree…. Run the football, play defense will be the key to finishing this season on a high note… Cody can throw it better than it appears you will see….

      • Kamiar Mehrabian says:

I want to believe you lol. I know Cody can run the read-option, which helps our offense immensely as far as the play action. But gosh. Honestly though, if you would’ve told me in the pre-season that TK would be hurt this year, I would’ve believed you. Thomas is 6-4, which is really nice considering he has legs, too. Just need him to play with confidence and Shepard.

        • John Garner says:

Yes – Shepard! He’s a difference maker. Him on the field would really open up the run game. My concern is that because of the lack of depth at QB we won’t run a true zone read.

          • Kamiar Mehrabian says:

We did it last weekend without Blake Bell. I think we’ll continue to see it. Nothing to lose, now.

    • John Garner says:

It is his first time all the time. Be patient. Cody will improve. We really don’t need to throw that many passes to be effective on offense. We might want to keep Keith Ford out though. His fumbling could hurt us in a critical situation.

      • Kamiar Mehrabian says:

Just hoping his struggles were a part of the rain. Because if he throws like that against KU, in a dead quiet stadium, that’s also halfway full, we’re gonna have issues. Then again, having a TE may be his best friend. Large target in the middle of the field usually helps.

      • Kamiar Mehrabian says:

Like I said, if we have Shepard back, other teams are likely to double or bracket him. That means open receivers. Considering his pocket presence abilities and baseball arm, Thomas should be able to sling it downfield– something that Knight struggled with. TK never really had great arm strength.

  • SoonerFan11 says:

Knight may have a decision to make…. It will be telling if you see QB offers come out…. I feel bad for him ….

  • SoonerinLondon says:

I think TK has started his last game for OU. Not sure if he plays after the injury, but either way, I don’t think he starts another game unless it is filling in as a backup.

Seems like a great kid. I’m very sorry for him, if it works out that way.

Braxton Miller would be interesting, but I believe he recommitted to tOSU last week.

    • JB says:

Agreed. I don’t think TK will start at QB at OU again unless Bob is playing coy with the media about his status. I sure would like to see Bell come back and play QB so he can finish his home career as the Sooner QB who bailed us out of the last regular season game when we couldn’t seem to find a QB.

  • BigJoeBrown says:

Not really sure what it is. But it seems more or less like a condition rather than an injury.

  • soonerinks says:

I have a really hard time believing that they put Shepherd back to return a punt coming off of a groin injury, especially on a cool rainy day.

    • OU_Sooners says:

coaches say that he coaxed Sanchez off of the field and he put himself in. Didn’t want to burn a TO because Shep wanted to play. Shame.

      • soonerinks says:

If true, I admire the young man’s desire. Would have rather had him as a receiver though.

        • OU_Sooners says:

definitely. He wants to play. Don’t want to get him further hurt against KU. Of all teams, KU.

  • lovethemsooners says:

247 reported this morning that TK may walk with the seniors next week for the Bedlam game, which would indicate his football career would be over.

    • OU_Sooners says:

That’s awful for him. Hope it’s not true, but it sounds like it. Sad day in Norman, especially for the high hopes he had at the University of Oklahoma. If true, I know Stoops will allow him to keep his scholarship.

    • SoonerBred says:

That rumor was flat out dismissed by someone possibly close to the Knight family this afternoon for what it’s worth, and I tend to agree that Trevor will be competing for the QB spot by the spring if not sooner.

      • bmrsnr says:

The guy who dismissed it is a cousin of the Knight brothers.

        • Jordan Esco says:

bmrsnr is correct. I’ll take his (the cousin) word over that of those “reporting” this b.s. rumor

          • Herman Bubbert says:

God forbid I would defend Hale, but …
Jordan, you should know that players on the team are saying essentially what they reported. The story is out there. Now, whether they vetted it is another story.

          • Jordan Esco says:

Fair enough. I guess my only response at this point would be IMO there’s a reason literally no one else that covers the team has reported anything even remotely similar.

Could it be true? Sure, maybe. But in this particular situation, given that it involves a potentially serious medical issue and/or a young man’s football career, if it were me I’d be damn sure I had every possible loose end wrapped up before running anything.

Clearly I have a different standard than this other person.

      • Jordan Esco says:

I’m only going to post this b/c of the misinformation now being spread as a result of the incredibly irresponsible “reporting” referenced above. This is the cousin’s response to the “report.” These are obviously his words, not mine. I don’t think anyone would really get that confused, but I just want to be perfectly clear.

This isn’t myself or TFB “reporting” anything. I’m simply trying to offer up information from a relative of Knight’s to hopefully try and help clear up some of the false information being propagated.

    • Jordan Esco says:

They took a rumor, didn’t both to vet it in the slightest, and ran w/ it. Incredibly irresponsible move on their part, IMO. Though I can’t really say I’m surprised.

  • KS47Straight says:

I believe they said his condition was something like transient quadriplegia? That sounds like a nerve issue in the neck. Trying to imagine any doctor clearing him for physical contact after something like that. Also trying to imagine risking permanent damage and life as a quadriplegic just to play football. Since the day I heard a description of his condition I assumed he was done.

Question, will Mayfield be a JR or SR next year?
