FOOTBALL

My word, this incessant whining from the local media & sports radio talking-heads about Mike Gundy and his non-answers is beyond annoying. You’re paid to be there and/or talk/write about it, suck it up.

This will surely only help to propagate the ‘Braxton Miller to OU’ talk on Sooners message boards already taking place. (SN)

Mike trolling brother Cale.

Continuing with that same theme.

lulz.

Sorry, I just can’t get over the hilarity of that previous stat. They’ve literally never won three years in a row. Ever. Man, what a miserable existence (in so many ways, not just this football series) it must be as an Ok. State fan. I thank my father every year for not raising me as an OSU fan. This year will be no different.

Finally put him out of his misery.

I know he’s a guy a lot of people like and/or have respect for, but if I were a Florida fan this (potential) hire would make me all kinds of ‘meh.’

Michigan reportedly “struggling” to find their next head coach. (FootballScoop)

Feel horrible for all those affiliated with the program, especially the players.

Quality long-read on former fantasy football stud Priest Holmes. (NBC Sports)

BASKETBALL

GET OUT AND SUPPORT THIS OU BASKETBALL TEAM!!! THEY’RE REALLY GOOD. PLUS, LON KRUGER & HIS STAFF BUST THEIR A$$E$ EVERY DAY MAKING THEM BETTER. (Sooner Sports)

Andy Katz reporting that OU & Wisconsin have a deal in place for a home-and-home series starting next year, around Thanksgiving, in Norman. (ESPN)

OTHER

Somebody apparently stole the University of Texas’ brains. Insert your own punch line here. (WTSP)

My goodness.

I’m sure this is fake, but it still made me laugh.

At least the kids are getting a good laugh.

Meh.

Gonna be very interesting to see the coaching turnover this offseason. Some fairly big name jobs open (Florida, Michigan, Nebraska), Tulsa which matters to me being I went there and live in Tulsa, and I’m sure some others will open up as well. Kansas being a Big 12 team as well, though I really think/thought they’d give the DC that coached them this year a shot. They did show improvement under him.

IF Tulsa doesn’t go after a young offensive coordinator type, somebody like Nutt is probably the next best idea. Agree with Jordan, not sure I’d be an excited UF fan if McElwain is their top choice. Does Michigan manage to land Miles?

    • BoomerDave says:

Soonerfan TU: How would you feel about A&M OC Jake Spavital (sp) as your next HC? Too young? He’s a Tulsa boy. Do you think he would consider the job considering his family’s close ties to the Blankenship family? Just curious about your thoughts.

      • SoonerfanTU says:

That is exactly the kind of name I hope they go after. I don’t really have a feel about him being too young, that would need to come out in the interview process, but a young, dynamic, spread offense guy should be #1 on the list. Guys like Spavital.

The TW ran an article the other day that listed out 8 or so options. Blanking on the names that were on there, but it did include Spavital and Nutt. Morris (now SMU) would have been a good option. Oh, the guy at TCU…..Meacham, he’d be a good one, and may already have an interview lined up.

But those guys (Meacham, Morris, Spavital) are the types I’d prefer. Followed by a vet like Nutt that has won at bigger schools before.

        • Danny Webb says:

What are your thoughts about Seth Littrell? I have heard his name quite a bit on the radio talk shows here in Tulsa. I think he would well, local kid, knows the area, seems to be a good recruiter.

    • RBear says:

The problem I would have in going after a young OC type guy is that he’s just using it as a stepping stone like most before- if Nutt, however, signed, he just might stay a while due to his past. Maybe…

      • SoonerfanTU says:

My opinion on that is who cares? TU basketball remained successful year after year with guys only staying for a couple of years. Wasn’t until they tried to hire the old local guy (Phillips) that things came crashing down.

The other thing I like about hiring young OC types, is that they come cheap. If they don’t work out, you aren’t buying out massive contracts. If they do work out, they are typically moving on, and TU is receiving buy out monies. You hire a guy like Nutt, he is going to want more money, and probably a longer contract. If it doesn’t work out, you are stuck.

        • RBear says:

True- that’s definitely another side to it. Guess I just wish TU weren’t such a stepping stone job but it is what it is.

  • Sooner Ray says:

Those damn coons are mean critters.

    • paganpink says:

They’ll kill a dog in the water, right?

      • Bill Hasseberg says:

Coon hunter buddy of mine once told me if a dog gets into the water with one, the coon will get on it’s back, then on its head and drown it.

      • Sooner Ray says:

I’ve heard stories, never seen it but I have seen one cornered and would want no part of it.

  • SoonerfanTU says:

Does Barrett’s injury change anything in regards to Miller? Or is Barrett expected to be 100% sometime before next season starts?

  • SoonerfanTU says:

Also, looks like TCU might hold on and stay above Baylor in the playoff race. At first I had a problem with that. I mean, what does head to head mean if both teams can’t go thru a relatively equal schedule, and the team that won the head to head matchup doesn’t get the better ranking? But thinking back to how that game played out, how TCU has looked better all season, and how they (TCU) are playing better down the stretch, and I’m not sure I really have a problem with it.

    • Eric Hoffpauir says:

Plus it wasn’t like Baylor decisively won the head to head. It was just about as close to a tie as you can get, and it was played at Baylor.

    • Malicong says:

I think the committee is looking at it like they didn’t play an equal schedule. TCU has a pretty good non-con win over Minnesota and Baylor played one of the easiest OOC schedules in FBS.

      • D Hunter Sanchez says:

So, they are going to judge a teams schedule? Who allowed that as part of the criteria? They need to revisit the SEC ooc schedules. That is BS!

        • SoonerfanTU says:

I think that has always been a part of what they are going to look at. As it should be. Not all 10-2 teams are created equally.

        • SoonerGoneEast says:

The schedule for each team is absolutely part of the criteria the selection committee is required to consider.

    • D Hunter Sanchez says:

      From John Hoover,

Yes, TCU does look like a better team than Baylor. Comparative scores against Oklahoma, Kansas, Texas Tech, Texas and Oklahoma State hint at that. TCU’s average margin of victory over those teams is an impressive 30.5 points. Baylor’s is a slightly less-impressive 22.5 — and that could change one way or the other with this week’s results.

But should margin of victory over common opponents be worth more than a head-to-head victory? Absolutely not.

For half a century, college football fans wanted their champion decided on the field, not by some writers’ poll. Then for 16 years, the Bowl Championship Series did the best it could to pick two primary combatants, but still had to rely on human polls and computers and endured annual controversies.

Now, with a four-team playoff in place, the championship finally can be settled on the field. But wait, isn’t that exactly where Baylor beat TCU? On the field? I would add TCU looks better on D, Baylor, as we OU fans saw looks better on O, 50.00 points a game.

      • SoonerfanTU says:

Why should head to head matter so much when one of those teams is going to have the advantage of home field? I’m not saying it shouldn’t matter, I think it should. I think it should matter quite a bit. I just don’t think that should automatically place Baylor ahead of TCU in this scenario, especially in regards to how that game played out and where it was played.

I don’t think there is any doubt TCU is a better all around team than Baylor. On both O and D. The Playoff is going to take a few things from the March Madness of college hoops. There, teams that have similar records may have different seedings based on SOS and how well they were playing down the stretch. So far, Baylor needs to show that they are playing better down the stretch.

        • soonermusic says:

As much as I don’t particularly relish a situation in which TCU seems to be a better team than Baylor, I think if you beat a team on the field, folks shouldn’t be able to use “impressions,” or selected statistics, to ignore the win. All those other factors are to some extent subjective. Games are not always just about who the experts think is better, they are about match-ups, and various other games-within-the-game. Sometimes the team that’s not supposed to win does. That’s part of the beauty of sports.

If by some weirdness ‘Bama plays a 2 loss team, defeats them in every phase of the game, looks better on paper and to the eye, but loses the game anyway, should they get to move on regardless, because the experts think they are a “better team,” or played a tougher schedule? In my opinion, no.

Maybe some folks think Nebraska had a better team than OU that one year.:-) But should OU have stepped aside and let Nebraska go to the Orange bowl even though we beat them and ended up with one loss each? Heck no!

IMHO, if you beat a team, you have bragging rights for that season, period. That’s why they play the games. 🙂

PS maybe the solution is for them both to get in….

  • Kody K. says:

Jordan- Was Mike Gundy’s statement about Perine being poorly coached a playful harassment type of Joke to his brother? Certainly he wouldn’t have meant that as an actual criticism…….right?

    • Jordan Esco says:

      Yes, re: playful

    • Zack says:

But then again mike is kind of a dbag

    • soonermusic says:

“poorly coached” he kept a straight face, but it was at the tail end of a stream of compliments about Perine’s talent and technique–lots of yards after contact, breaks tackles, keeps his pad level nice and low, poorly coached….

McElwain I think is a good catch and hire for UF. Experience with SEC players, teams and recruiting, experience turning around a program, offensive minded (where the SEC seems to be going). I think its fits Foley’s mold perfectly.

  • Eric Hoffpauir says:

I also feel for the kids playing at UAB, and to some degree feel for UAB because they have to deal with Alabama and Auburn playing politics with their sports programs, but I also don’t think every school needs a DI sports program. It’s a cash sinkhole for a lot of schools who are ultimately unsuccessful at success in the sport and unsuccessful at getting revenue and a higher profile for their school.

    • Danny Webb says:

Can someone answer this for me? When a school drops a sport that the ladies play, the school is forced to drop a male sport, (according to Title IX ruling), but if a male sport is dropped, there is not a equal reduction? I thought that a school had to offer equal opportunities for both genders? Maybe I am just confused.

      • Eric Hoffpauir says:

I don’t believe Title IX requires either. A male sport doesn’t have to be dropped just because the school no longer supports the female equivalent, nor the reverse. It just has to offer overall balance in opportunities for women to participate.

      • Stephen Dale says:

danny…………………welcome to the world of Title 9……those lesbians / transgender types want what they want and what you have. nothing fair about title 9 to start with since their sports ( excepting baskeball at UConn, Tennessee, Stanford, Texas) drain athletic budgets rather than enhance the budgets.

  • Jared Tyra says:

Gotta say, the young man may have gotten some attention by rocking the rim but he might’ve made that possession count by kicking out to an open teammate instead of being called for a charge. All basketball seriousness aside, I have not seen many human beings jump that high.

  • Defend Colfax says:

Poor UAB players. Nothin you can do now but just pat em on the back and point the good ones towards Norman.

  • CS says:

I have this feeling that TCU might win it all, their defense is legit, don’t see one in the top4 better at playing defense than them.

    • Indy_sooner says:

      I hope they do.

    • EasTex says:

Their first 11 on each side of the ball are very good. There is a huge drop off after them and their defense was exposed for lack of depth in the 4th qtr against BU.

that Russian cars-on-ice video – was that fire flaring out from the impact point? What would catch on fire from a relatively small impact? These Russian videos are insane.

It might be from the warm air steaming out when it punctures or buckles the door on the other vehicle. I noticed it too and decided that it must just be super cold there and warm air is instantly visible!

  • SamSooner says:

The UAB players should be allowed to go to any program that will take them. The team that takes them should not have it count against the scholarship limit.

  • SamSooner says:

Super K, Jordan, JY, I sent a message using the tool on this site. Is that the best way to contact one of you? Please confirm you’ve received my message.

    • Jordan Esco says:

      What was the message?

      • SamSooner says:

You probably didn’t get it then. I would prefer to reply to you privately.

      • SamSooner says:

Jordan, I’m going to put the stinky fish on the table.

I want you to know that I’m offended by Stephen Dale’s comment today. There’s just no place for that. He doesn’t seen to care who he offends. I’m African-American/Black. I would be disgusted if one of his comments was meant to demean my ethnicity.

It seems to me that everyone who comes here tries to be careful with what they say in a their comments, except Stephen. He doesn’t care. Why would he say this and why does he feel this entitlement to say something so callous. Here is what he said today:

“danny…………………welcome to the world of Title 9……those lesbians / transgender types want what they want and what you have. nothing fair about title 9 to start with since their sports ( excepting baskeball at UConn, Tennessee, Stanford, Texas) drain athletic budgets rather than enhance the budgets.”

Really, “those lesbian/transgender types…” That is loaded with contempt and bordering hate.

He has no idea who we are and what we stand for or believe in. His commentary is often unfounded and doesn’t add any value to the discussion.

I’ve tried not to read his comments but they are hard to avoid. If I come here, which I like, I’m bound to see something ridiculous he’s posted.

But today was over the top.

Is there something that can be done?

        • Sooner Ray says:

          • SamSooner says:

            How’s it going EasTex?

          • EasTex says:

IT is kicking my firm and ample rear end, but like I always say the alternative to being busy isn’t very pleasant either.
Hope all is well for you and yours.
Hard to believe we are only days away from the conclusion of another football season.

          • SamSooner says:

I know. It’s crazy. You get all jazzed up and the next thing you know it’s over. I will be watching Saturday. Being an OU fan is awesome.

It’s just around the corner: another National Championship. We have to stay the course.

        • Glocal Sooner says:

I think most of us would rather not have to endure his participation on this site 🙂

        • Jordan Esco says:

  • Borba22 says:

I was on the osu board yesterday to see what they thought about Mike Gundy’s antics and came across a bedlam thread and thought, “why not.” In a thread about football all they can talk about is their other sports and they rationalize their poor football existence by saying, and I quote, “At least we’re better traditionally at every other major sport outside of football than OU.”
    That thread is hilarious.
