Well i guess i was wrong in the game thread Saturday, Heupel wasn’t locked in a broom closet at halftime, he was just ordered to stop calling plays like Josh Hepuel.

If my memory is correct Musschumps last defense at Texass wasn’t that impressive. While I kind of like his intensity it sometimes comes off as dramatics …….. And being a high school teacher I have this…… Ummmmmm…. Absolute disdain for dramatics. His defenses at Florida have not been helped by their impotent offenses but they have not been world beaters either.
Yeah, other than jumping up and down and screaming until he looks like he’s suffering from ingestion of some really bad tropical fungus, I’m not sure he’s ever done much. Not a fan.
On yesterday’s presser posts on TFB there was a gif of HP spazzing out on his head set in the TT game. Any context for that?

It’s more in humor than anything for those of us who aren’t exactly fans of Heupel’s time as OC. Or at least that’s how I’ve been using it.
FWIW, the Tulsa Union article is behind the curve. While the first half play calling was mysterious the second half was called and executed well. The final score was about what most figured it to be. I’d take those results in every game. Whether ordered by Stoops or HP just pulling his head out the point is an adjustment was made and worked very well.
Right, but the point is why did it take until the second half for that type of play calling?
And it’s because, IMO, what you saw in the first half — and what we’ve seen for the better part of the last 3-4 years — is who Heupel wants to be as an OC. He doesn’t want to run the zone read or be a power running team. It’s only when his hand is forced does he do the thing that makes the most sense.
The fact that it could even be suggested that Stoops had to “order” him to change his approach should be a fire’able offense given the atrocious run defense they were facing.
He ran the ball 10 times on first down in the first half, including, by the way on 1st and 18, gaining only 1 yard, and one play before gaining only 2 on first and ten. That’s not what someone who “wants to be pass happy,” does. In the middle of the second quarter he ran Perine on 1st down, gained zero yards, but tried him again on second down. That’s not what someone who doesn’t want to run does.
Tech was simply stuffing the run plays most of the time. If anything his hand was forced to go away from the run, because, even though Cody was making mistakes, the passing game was twice as effective as the run game. And, still he kept running the ball, over half the time.
Maybe if Hoover would actually look at what went on in the game instead of just promoting his hostile agenda, his articles might make more sense.
Wait, so 10 plays in one half — or the single two-play sequence of running the ball on consecutive downs you reference — of football against a horrible defensive team is all the evidence you need to determine that the rest of us are wrong?
Whatever the issues were or were not in this Tech game (and how anyone could conveniently use this game and one of the worst defenses OU will or has faced all year as a measuring stick for Heupel’s success is beyond me, but whatever), we’re now nearly four years into this experiment and I’d love for you, or anyone, to tell me what is the offensive identity of this team under Heupel’s direction?

No, you didn’t listen to what I said. Those plays show that he kept returning to the run even though it wasn’t working. It’s pretty simple, if you are wanting to pass, and it’s first and 18, you throw the ball. But when the run is only gaining 2 yes or 0 yards, you should pass. Unless you like punting to an offense that is scoring easily against you.
The offensive “identity” they are striving for is a balanced offense. That means equally able to have success with both run and pass, and to use more of one or the other to take advantage of the defense they’re facing.

Simple. Look at the result of the first down runs in the second half. Compare with the first half:
First half gained 2 yards, 0 yards, 2 yards, 1 yard, 7 yards, 0 yards, 3 yards
Compare with 9 yards, 64 yards, 3 yards, 9 yards, 26 yards, TD run, 16 yards.
See the difference? When you’re averaging 17 yards per first down play, you should run every down. (actually it was more like 22, because the td run was only 1 yard) When you’re averaging barely 2 yards per play, you need to include other things.
Not arguing either way, but lets look at the total picture of the first half. Lets look at all the runs, including penalties, versus passes.
run – 8,11,2,1,12 hold pen,1,7,4,9,3,2,15(jet sweep), 0,5,7,3,13,2TD,-3 fum snap, 1.
The average was 3.8 ypc i believe (not sure the jet sweep counts as run).
passing – inc, 6, 4, inc, inc, inc, inc, PA 22, PA long to Neal, pick, inc, about 10, 7, pick, inc, pick.
or look at the individual series
first – inc, r8, r11 ; r2, p6, p4 ; r1, inc, inc
second – r12 hold now 1st and 17, r1, inc, inc
third – r7, r4 hold, r9, r3 ; pa22, pa 30+, pick in redzone
fourth – r2, inc, pass for first ; r15 jetsweep + pen ; r0, r5, p7 ; r3, r13 ; r2 TD
fifth – -3 bad snap, pick
sixth – inc, 1, pick
I believe JH tried to pick the passing to gain confidence, but it just never got going. Maybe the first pick hurt the psyche more than JH believed. Maybe at times like this is where having a QB coach on the sideline would be huge. Just my two cents.
Because you don’t get more than 2 or 3 yards a play doesn’t mean you have to start passing. Basically, JH wasn’t giving it time to work. I would of taken my chances with still running the ball on 2 or 3 and long. TT defense couldn’t stop nothing. We should of had almost 600 or 700 yards rushing on the day. Everyone knew on this board to run the ball.. I don’t think Huepel wanted to run and finally Stoops told him to call run plays. JH is not ready to be a OC. He still needs to work on his overall play calling.
Do you really think Bob would tolerate that? You are basically saying that on game day, Josh goes rogue with the play calling, and Bob allows it. I just can’t see that happening.

No, I’m not saying he’s “going rogue” but I am definitely saying Bob “tolerates” him and his play-calling (not sure how anyone could argue otherwise).
Obviously they’re not going into any game w/ a plan on either side of the ball that Stoops hasn’t signed off on.
And yet we saw what we saw in the first half and if the talk is to be believed — or even the amateur lip-readers amongst us who could pretty clearly see Bob, at one point in during the 1st half, say into his headset “why the f are we running the ball?” — and Bob had to say something to the effect of ‘we’re running the ball in the 2nd half’ then that’s CLEARLY a problem.
Or at least it is in my eyes.
I guess goodell woke up this morning and found his balls.
I’d guess he’s about to get them handed to him by the player’s union then.
Yeah I’m sure he just wants to tie them up for awhile and hope the season runs out.
I was under the impression that this WAS following protocol. First offense for any type of domestic abuse is 6 games without pay under this year’s new rules and Peterson has been paid for all his time off. Wouldn’t this then fit the rules the league operates under? Don’t get me wrong, i think the only reason this is a story is because of the public outcry, but AD DID beat his child badly and deserves to face some discipline.
