FOOTBALL

Good lord. Between Russell Westbrook and/or deflated balls, the sports talk radio & #HotSportsTake industry have been even more intolerable than usual. And that’s really saying something, for both.

I love that this has been the lead story on NewsOK for the better part of 24 hours. Breaking the big news! #sources (NewsOK)

OU’s Joe Mixon listed as an underclassmen to watch in 2015. (ESPN)

There was never anything to it besides wishful thinking (at best) and a local media desperate for click-bait. So can we finally put this to bed now?

You had a good run, JJ. Nice knowin’ ya. (photo via ESPN)

RECRUITING

OU coaches continuing to pursue 2015 WR Ryan Newsome.

BASKETBALL

HUGE loss for Texas.

OTHER

By all means, don’t do anything to try and get out of the way. Just make sure you keep filming on your stupid phone. That said, good lord would that be terrifying.

If you’re doing 200+ m.p.h., in a Lamborghini, on a road in Russia, aren’t you kind of asking for something like this to happen. Apparently, in spite of the pictures at the end, the driver somehow survived (thankfully).

Smoked. And, again, I want one.

Ok, there seems to be some smoke on the Twitter timelines of blatanthomerism & landthieves about Shawn Jefferson as the OU WR coach… Does TFB have any vibe on this… Or is mum the word until an announcement is made?

    • Jordan Esco says:

Everyone is just trying to read the tea leaves right now. There is very little out there in the way of credible information at the moment. And even more of those people who ‘know somebody who knows somebody who heard…’

Which isn’t intended to be a shot at either of the guys you mentioned. I’m just saying it’s a name that “makes sense” right now, on some levels, so everyone is just throwing it out there.

    • curt gomer says:

Would like to see it but if its Shawn Jefferson then why not announce it? Might help with Newsome and any other WR they’re after. Most likely a current NCAA coach that’s waiting till after NSD. IMO

      • Jeremy Phillips says:

Thats a legit & great point that i agree with. Id say as far as Shawn Jefferson goes that maybe that relationship is fairly new & likely didn’t get started until Van’s recruitment began. So that could take some time to develop & see if that’s even something he wants to try or if he’s even qualified for, i think hed have to take & pass some NCAA recruiting exams & that’s only if hes got the proper degrees to make it an option to begin with.. So, really with Shawn it would be a bit of a longer vetting process..

        • brainpimp says:

He is the wr coach for Titans, as well as a 15 year veteran of the NFL. That pretty much qualifies him without restriction.

          • Jeremy Phillips says:

I believe you must have a degree to coach at the college level.. That’s the qualification I’m speaking to…

      • Super Keith says:

If the candidate is already known by the coaching staff, then I have no doubt that the name is being passed on to high profile recruits.

  • lovethemsooners says:

ROFLMFAO @ the Dodge. Shoulda got a Mustang baby!

    • Jim says:

Mustang would have been smoked. That particular Tesla is faster than most Ferraris. Shame about most domestic muscle cars is that they’re only badass in a straight line.

      • paganpink says:

Not the Hellcat, Jim. It has the largest tires on a production vehicle and is amazingly quick around a race course because of that and the suspension tuning. Despite its weight it can lap courses faster then Camaro’s and Mustangs, M3’s, M5’s, and even new Corvettes, depending on the course. And it’s heavier then any of them. The high schooler above has no idea how to launch a 700 hp vehicle.

        • EasTex says:

So how long does the electrified car need to recharge before the next race?

          • paganpink says:

As an environmentalist I’m very concerned about powering cars with coal rather then the much more energy dense gasoline readily available!

          • JJSoona says:

So Pagan, I’m guessing you won’t like my hemi smart car?? :_)

          • paganpink says:

I do have an affinity for anything with “hemi” in it, but the Smart car is a FAIL!

          • EasTex says:

            LOL!
Then you are certainly concerned with all the energy resources and toxic substances required to manufacture and transport batteries to the assembly plants.

          • paganpink says:

Absolutely! What are they thinking? I like batteries powering my smart phone not my car!

          • paganpink says:

Their ranges get hammered by full throttle usage, and cold weather may be even worse for them. Not only is there diminished capacity when below freezing with all batteries, but the need to heat the vehicle for the driver takes away almost as much power as powering it down the road does. When coupled with lights, windshield wipers, and other accessories the model S which they claim can have a range of 265 has gotten as little as 38 miles in cold weather in New York when tested by car magazines. They are presently looking at battery heaters – which presumably will offset the energy required to heat them by increased capacity in the battery pack- but it is evident that one of the huge advantages to internal combustion engines is that they produce heat as a byproduct and therefore are superior in cold weather climates. The TESLA vehicles are very fast and beautiful cars but they won’t ever achieve the sort of sales to make them anything except a niche manufacturer unless there is a major breakthrough in battery capacity of some sort that Elon Musk and everyone else has failed to achieve yet. It will happen, but who knows when that will be. And it won’t happen because the government dictates it, either. Almost all true breakthroughs are serendipity after all, and not due to finding what a person was looking for at all. Like my wife! But that’s a different story…

          • EasTex says:

            HA!
Battery powered cars have been around since the late 1800’s. They never caught on for the same reason, despite some encouraging benefits, limited range due to battery capacity.

        • Brettasaurus says:

Actually, the Hellcat only has 275/40 ZR 20s at all four wheels. Those are kind of puny in this day and golden age of horsepower. They are also nowhere near the largest tires on any production vehicle. The new Z28 has nearly slick P-Zero Trofeo 305/30 19 all around and many cars have gone with 335 section width tires when they fit. The Hellcat needs at least sticky 305s out back to get any traction. With drag radials and bone stock, it has turned a 10.9 @ 129.

          • paganpink says:

You’re right and I got the two mixed up! I do remember it doing amazing at the track even against stuff like the Z-28 which doesn’t even come with factory air or more then 1 speaker for the seat belt chime.

        • Jim says:

Don’t misunderstand me, I think the Hellcat is badass, but there is little to no information about the Hellcat’s lap times ANYWHERE. So stating its faster than any of those other cars you mentioned is getting ahead of yourself. There is no information at PIR, LS, the Ring, Road America, nothing. If you can find officially lap times anywhere, please share them. I’m truly interested.

Here’s one example of what I found: “While the Challenger Hellcat is a tactical missile that does its best work in a straight line” , “track handling isn’t nearly as accomplished as its GM rival” , “For track duty, the Z28. For real-world driving, the Hellcat”…Plus, the Z06 and ZR1 hold two of the top 14 times every recorded at the Ring, so again, stating the Hellcat is faster is a bit foolish.

However, OVERALL, the Hellcat is considered the best American muscle car out right now when considering everything (interior/performance/looks). It’s not my personal favorite appearance-wise (everyone’s different), but you cannot deny its total package.

I do agree with you about the high-schooler type launch there. To be fair, most drivers are not experienced enough to handle that car. It requires a perfect launch to achieve the 11.2s stated, and 99% of drivers cannot do that. So it appears right now, as in most cases, if you’re going to race an American muscle car, do it from a roll. 40+, in my opinion.

          • paganpink says:

I agree with you on almost everything. I had seen a 7.37 time at the Nurburgring but now I can’t find it. I know that the new Z-28 is pure handling, bad ride and all, and is 75k compared to 59.9k for the Dodge and it would surely beat the on courses with short straightaways. But Dodge has great brakes as well as 650 pounds of torque and we’ll have to wait for them on longer tracks. And I didn’t mean to compare it to ZL-1’s even though the new Hellcats have more horsepower. I know there is a 10.7 claim for the Hellcat on drag radials, but those Trofeo’s I was confused about earlier are 5000 mile tires that are so incredibly sticky that automotive journalists complained about them throwing every piece of gravel and breaking 2 windshields of the car trailing them during a track day with the Z-28. They’re incredible for street tires. I like the 4 door Charger Hellcat much more then the Challenger and it has a better interior then the Camaro’s or the Mustang’s by a long shot, particularly the plasticky Camaro. I am not really a Dodge fan boy but it is really amazing they even built these things, and I give them all the credit. They may just end up retaining their value better then the Chevy’s or the Fords because they will be so much rarer. Reliability, I’m not so sure about, of course. When you combine Fiat’s with what were Chrysler’s you shouldn’t be counting on fewer problems although I would hope that they are better then in the past!

          • Jim says:

Ha, I can tell you and I have been reading the exactly same articles. The 7:37 is actually the Z28’s Ring time. Good for #38. https://nurburgringlaptimes.com/lap-times-top-100/ If the Hellcat makes that list, it is in very esteemed territory. I don’t think they’ve actually run it there yet though. They should. And by the sounds of it, the Hellcat should make the list. My guess says around the 7:50 mark.

The price for the Hellcat is amazing for what you get. Pound for pound, perhaps only the GTR can eclipse it. The only remaining question is reliability. Time will tell on that.

haha, I’m with you. I like the Charger better as well.

My 08 GT500 did 12.4 stock, and that was only the 500 Hp version, not the 665 HP version the new ones have. Mine didnt have launch control either.

I bet a 2014 Gt500 does better than 11.9. Guarantee a super snake would do better than 11.9.

        • Jim says:

I’ll just leave these here, “What you get is a quarter-mile in 11.9 sec @ 123.5 mph (according to testing we trust).” http://www.automobilemag.com/reviews/driven/1305_2013_shelby_gt500_super_snake/

“How’s this going to work? At the drag strip, it doesn’t. The 2014 Shelby GT500 hustles to 60 mph in 4.1 seconds (3.8 seconds with 1 foot of rollout as on a drag strip) and finishes the quarter-mile in 12.1 seconds.”
          http://www.edmunds.com/chevrolet/corvette-stingray/2014/comparison-test4.html

I did find this, but it’s the only one: According to Motor Trend, the stock 2013 Shelby GT500 is capable of passing a 1/4 miile in just 11.6 seconds at 125.7 mph.

          • j l says:

            2013 super snake runs a 10.66…

            http://mustangsdaily.com/blog/2013/03/08/independent-test-of-2013-shelby-gt500-super-snake-results-in-10-second-14-mile-times/

Just an FYI, mustangs are infamous for having wildly varying 1/4 times, even cars of the same year.

I had a buddy with an 04 GT that ran .6 faster than what car and driver said it should.

my stock 89 GT ran high 12’s, much faster than the mid 13’s it should have.

          • Jim says:

Sorry for the late reply. I tried responding yesterday, but the mobile version does not login very well for me.
Anyhow, that’s nuts!! A 1.24s difference is more than “wildly varying”; it’s almost like a different car! It sounds like a crap shoot when it comes to buying one. Like, “you might get a fast one, you might not”. Not exactly a ringing endorsement for the vehicle.

          • j l says:

The rumor has always been people at the ford plants will randomly upgrade certain cars out of boredom.

People have pulled brand new mustang engines apart and found ported and polished heads, flat top pistons, bigger cams, etc.

Most mustangs will perform about the same. Sometimes you happen to get one of these “special” ones, and they are just way faster than their counterparts.

Pretty sure that ahole probably just went and bought another. If you can afford one Huracan, you can afford another.

    • paganpink says:

You can’t even tell why he lost it, although at those speeds you get unstable in a hurry and judging by the Russian crash videos on YouTube both the roads and the other drivers are terrible.

  • brainpimp says:

ok the guy in the hellcat is an idiot and never hooked up. You could outrun that attempt with a vw beetle.

Does the name Keenan McCardel rattle any doors? Heard that from a donor friend.

    • Jeremy Phillips says:

Mccardel’s name has made the message board rounds.. & makes sense.. NFL experience, young & since they’re not expected to announce anything until after signing day, that would fit with someone currently coaching in college not wanting to ruin his current employer before NSD..

    • Zack says:

Apparently there was a flight from Vegas to Norman a few days ago…if this is going to be the choice it would make sense for the jefferson family to be leaning toward OU since I’m sure Jefferson and mccardell know each other at least a little bit.

247Sports list the performance of their 2014 5* recruits. They had 33 players make the list. Six redshirted the other 27 were all productive in 2014. Many were team stars. For certain it illustrates why the emphasis exist to recruit 5*/4* athletes instead of area athlete that would die to play for the Sooners and be totally committed but not rated nearly so high.

It appears at this time that there is not a bust among the 33 unless that would be Joe Mixon as a result of the personal problems he has faced. And I suspect he will be more than just a contributor for the Sooners in 2015.

    http://247sports.com/Article/2

    • Malicong says:

I understand what you are saying and I agree for the most part but saying the other 27 were all productive is stretch. Getting on the field is not the same as being productive. OU had 4 true freshman that were just as productive (one more so) than most on that list, and not of them were a 5*. It is way to early to say who is a bust and who isn’t. Mixon wasn’t the only one not to play last year as you stated. Bo Scarborough didn’t even make it on campus until Winter. I don’t think anyone has been saying OU needs to just get the local kids and forget recruiting nationally, but when there are 4* kids instate who are “OU good”, they need to play in Norman.

    • soonerthunder says:

I’d really like to see how they performed after their careers are over at the school. Then evaluate their success.

      • akryan says:

no. their careers after college are totally immaterial to what they do as top recruits. Some will do well, and some won’t, in their future life. Doesn’t matter. What recruits are brought in to do is produce in college football. That’s it. That’s what success means as far as recruiting goes.

  • OUWade says:

maybe it’s just me or the perspective, but it looks like that Perine jersey at the HoF would barely fit over one of his thighs. Awesome to see OU stuff like that represented up there!

  • Jeff says:

The Hellcat race was a joke and he was the worse racer I have ever seen, no way that car runs 17 in the quarter mile

    • SoonerGoneEast says:

I haven’t got a clue what the Hellcat driver was thinking, and FWIW, the Hellcat has posted faster times than the Tesla.

  • Indy_sooner says:

RE: 5* Ratings- Doesn’t explain how our lowly B12 put 2 teams in the top 6 that could legitimately beat the entire SEC. Surely, it can’t be our “mediocre” OU team of 2014 opened a can of whoopass on Bama’s 5 stars?

    • kjt89 says:

You don’t need a team full of 5*/4*s to succeed, but starting with that talent level gives you a much higher floor and a higher ceiling to boot.

  • AmaGoh7 says:
