FOOTBALL

‘Lincoln Riley does not have all the answers — but that’s OK’ (NewsOK)

If you were one of the few still holding out hope that Dorial Green-Beckham would spurn the NFL and return to Norman next year, I regret to inform you that your dream has died. (NFL)

BASKETBALL

Another Bedlam beatdown.

OTHER

Uh-oh, OU mascot drama. This is also one of the dumbest local news stories you’ll ever see & why very few people, if any, take them seriously. Personally, I love the super over-dramatic voice over trying to make something out of less than nothing. They don’t actually know what happened and made the genius decision to interview people who weren’t even at the game. Bang up job, fellas. (KFOR)

Love my Sooners. Love this site. Thank you, Jordan, for your diligence. [Bro hug]!

  • Bob Edwards says:

So the real embarrassment in Mascotgate is that KFOR would allow that article to be published.

  • Jeff says:

OU turned it around, just hope they are not a 12 loss team and the committe try to put them a 10 seed

  • OhioBornSoonerBred says:

Watching the men’s basketball team is so frustrating. It’s hard to take “moral victories” when they’ve lost 6 games now, but to be positive about how they’re playing…..they’re SO CLOSE to getting over the hump and being an elite team. So close. Just have to find a way to push past that barrier and this team *can* be something special.

    • SCKSChief says:

I’m coming to the conclusion that the B12 is just a bunch of bad basketball teams. No one, besides Iowa State (at home!), can beat KU. Sick of it. One adolescent beating up little kids. We’ve seen what happens when KU plays the big boys. They get beat down.

    • Sooner Ray says:

They just need a new defensive coordinator.

    • Corey Davis says:

620 is Coffeyville, I’m from independence which is 10 min away

  • SCKSChief says:

Who is Cale’s 620? That’s my area code!

  • Jackson1006 says:

I have to admit Riley sounds smart and open minded and eager. It’s not too hard to get me to think eternally optimistic about us Sooners though 🙂

Was watching the Packers game Sunday and the term “regression to the mean” came to mind. That is, while there were lucky bounces, if you play long enough, the better team will make the plays.

This concerns me with the spread but even more so with the hurry up. If you are playing teams where you can exploit a matchup, a hurry up/ spread works but regression to the mean applies against top talent even exclusive of the goal line, 3rd and 1 type situations. It happened to Baylor against MSU for example. So the up tempo schemes while beneficial, continue to give other teams chances (to stop you and score) and statistically, the better teams that you play and the more snaps you have, the more regression to the mean applies, which in turn limits just how good you can be with such an offense. My daytime job precludes me from doing any diving into number but I think we see enough of this in person (spread teams get out to a lead, then slowly the other team comes back and fans have an uncomfortable feeling in their stomach – i.e. OU Texas in 08).

    • SCKSChief says:

All fair points. Take heart, a spread team won the NC this year!

    • MoJoOkie says:

So you’re saying the better team usually wins? I think you’re correct.

      • blaster1371 says:

I was beginning to type the exact same thing when your post popped up.

The logic Jackson is discussing rings true for WHY the spread offense can be so challenging and OU’s defense serves as a case study: A good spread offense can get a first down on one of three plays. Second and 10, third and nine are factored in as at least two or three WRs are going that far downfield on every play. The better offense cannot be stop three out of three plays by an inferior defense on a consistent basis. All that to say that eventually “luck” runs out.

        • MoJoOkie says:

Followed you right to the end. To me, the better spread teams don’t score in 3-4 snaps. They move down the field steadily 10-15 yards a pop, with the occasional incompletion or two. The fortunate thing for Riley is that we already have a nice stable of RB’s to complement the quick pass offense. If he can’t scheme well enough to get it in from the 3, then (THEN) I will say we got the wrong guy (scheme).

          • hOUligan says:

Oregon ZR game good case in point. Article stated they were high in no gain/lost yd but would then break one.

      • Jackson1006 says:

Very funny MoJo (not really). Yes what you say is true but the point is that sometimes to beat better teams, limiting the total number of plays in the game merits discussion in addition to element of surprise and match ups. Very opposite of the spread (think Bill Parcells in his prime, maybe KSU now)

        • MoJoOkie says:

Just messin’ with you; sort of. I like a good run game, and what you say about limiting the number of plays rings true. But sometimes the hare is going to get so far ahead or the tortoise that even patience won’t help the cause. I like balance, but if you can’t pick up the occasional 3rd and 7 with ingenuity, you’ll end up punting.

    • Jed says:

If you are saying that a hurry up attack can make an inferior team look competitive for a while, but that the ‘truth’ will out given time, I agree. But what if the better team is the one using the hurry up?
I’m not sure the hurry up is anything more than a tool in a tool kit. A well disciplined team ought to have it available. You start to see fatigue on the defensive side? Go hurry up and make them pay in gametime what they should have paid on August’s practice field.

    • akryan says:

Baylor put up 40 points on the vaunted MSU defense. It wasn’t the offensive scheme regressing to the mean that let them down.

  • Indy_sooner says:

Love the Gundy/Riley Combo. No better person (sans Monty) to get him started on the trail IMHO. You can tell we will be landing elite WR talent very soon.

    • HoustonChiver says:

Agreed, Monty has a natural talent for recruiting, but Gundy has been getting solid recruits for us for so long. A great teacher of the “Oklahoma” way!

      • Indy_sooner says:

Someone mentioned how Cale recruits. No promises regardless of the stars. Just a chance to earn playing time. Has worked well for us, AD, Demarco, Clay, Ford, Perine and (hopefully) Mixon and Anderson. If we can get that on the WR side it would be epic.

  • Soonerfandave84 says:

Sooners come back by driving to the basket and not turning it over, so what do you do with 4 minutes left, turn it over and shoot 3’s. I think they are watching Russ Westbrook

  • thebigdroot says:

Jordan- I know you had your doubts about this WBB team, what is your thoughts about them now?

    • Jordan Esco says:

Incredibly impressed. Never would have expected this after their non-con slate. Whatever Sherri & the players have done is clearly working. Love it!

      • thebigdroot says:

Was not my intent to call you out, so I apologize if it came off that way. It’s been nice to see growth and hopefully it means the team is getting better and not that the Big XII is down.

  • Steve Cooke says:

247’s Barton Scott changed his crystal ball on Van Jefferson to OU!

  • Jim Burke says:

Jordan’s daily sooner news posts have gone downhill. From great/breaking news type stuff to just reporting what we already know.

    • SoonerSouthoftheRed says:

It’s offseason..what do you expect..can’t be crazy hyped up mania every day.

    • Jordan Esco says:

Not sure what news I was ever really “breaking” with these. That’s not really what they’re designed for or my goal for ever starting them in the first place.

It was only ever started to kind of gather OU & other related stories from around the web, so others wouldn’t have to go out and try and gather stuff themselves.

Could there be more? Sure. I’ve said so from the beginning. But I don’t have any interest in giving clicks to stories I find to be a waste of time. But even if I did, I fail to see how it would be any more than what you’ve just criticized these posts from having become.

Unfortunately, I can’t make news happen. I am sorry to hear you don’t enjoy the posts, but even though it’s not something I’d like to see happen you always have to option to not click on them. Whether you do or don’t, thank you for reading the site just in general.

      • Jed says:

You can’t please all the people all the time. Far as I’m concerned, you’re doing fine.

      • thebigdroot says:

What, we don’t pay you enough?

      • sooner8 says:

Jordan, don’t let the wolves eat you up!!Your doing just fine sir!!!

      • eastoksooner says:

Love the daily news Jordan, keep it up

      • Super Keith says:

I, for one, love the Daily News you put together. It’s always OU related and it gives me one place to stop for the things that interest me. I was never looking for “inside scoop” or “breaking news”, I wanted to see some fun, OU related stuff and you deliver it every day!

        Thanks Jordan.

      • Jeff says:

Not sure what he is complaining about, your news is much more reliable than any other site

    • soonermusic says:

I think you may have missed the point as to what Jordan is intending to provide.

    • JJSoona says:

Ummmm isn’t this like radio or TV? You can CHOOSE to listen or not? Jordan is doing just fine thank you very much.

    • Eric Hoffpauir says:

I’m sure Jordan will be glad to pay you a full refund.

  • Cedarsooner says:

Who are the guys they are recruiting in each of these area codes listed? Anybody know?

  • Dustin says:

No way we can survive the season with four starters playing 37+ minutes. Kansas’ run to end the game was all but predictable. I hope the bench gets more minutes going forward.

    • Richard North says:

Our bench is very, very weak. Sometimes the best chance to win is to go with tired good players than rested weak players.
