FOOTBALL

‘From Muleshoe, Texas, to Oklahoma’s new offensive coordinator.’ (TW)

This week, in turn, Stoops made the hire that will come to define the twilight of his Oklahoma tenure, putting his future and the future of the program in the hands of a 31-year-old whiz kid. (ESPN)

‘Interesting’ is definitely not the word I’d use to describe whatever career parallels you believe there are between Bob Stoops & Mack Brown. Disturbing is actually the first word that comes to mind. (DMN)

Mel Kiper Jr. has Dorial Green-Beckham going No. 18 to the Chiefs & Jordan Phillips No. 27 to the Cowboys in his most recent mock draft. ($-ESPN-$)

FWIW, here is a free mock draft again with DGB at No. 18 but no Phillips. (NFL)

The best.

jefferson

That’s one lucky lady right there.

OTHER

That’s one way to get things done.

Smooth.

You don’t want to be on the business end of this thing.

Okay, I’m kind of warming up to this one.

This looks like a mess.

Whats the deal with the Braxton miller tweet?

  • ALar03 says:

So I haven’t seen any for sure info, but just to clarify dgb did turn in paperwork for the draft correct?

    • Indy_sooner says:

I haven’t seen anything either, but yesterday was the deadline for the declaration, so if he was coming back it would have been all over the internets

    • Jordan Esco says:

If he had not, I can guarantee we would have heard something by now and/or OU would have made some type of announcement that he’d be coming back.

      So in short, he’s gone.

      • James says:

So Jordan, based on your last couple(dozen) replies to the “Is DGB actually going pro” question I’m guessing you think it might be possible that he is gone?

        • Jordan Esco says:

I mean, I get it. Why wouldn’t you want to hold out hope? I’m not trying to be a dick and crushing everyone’s dreams, but it’s just the reality of where things stand today. He’s gone and the odds of him ever coming back were obviously pretty slim.

          • Ed Cotter says:

Yeah, he’s gone. Better for fans to just let him go than to continue to hold out hope that he will be back. Have the same feelings you do on this.

    • CTSooner says:

      The @EXOSfootball team welcomes @OU_Football WR @DorialGB5 to the 2015 #EXOSCombine family!

  • cush creekmont says:

Some of us have worried about the “Mack-Brownification” of Bob Stoops for some while now. Excuses and staff changes are not just parallel, they are duplicates. Still, BS was always a MUCH better coach than the Mack, so maybe he CAN get out of the maze.

    • Steve Johns says:

All coaches, sooner or later, go through a rough patch. Bob will come out of it, just like Switzer did.

      • SoonerOracle737 says:

        I think so too.

      • AmaGoh7 says:

I agree with this except for one major issue: unless the D changes, I don’t see it.

      • ND52 says:

Or they simply quit before probation hits. Looking at you Pete Carroll.

But yeah, even the great Bear Bryant had two consecutive 5-loss seasons before winning the SEC 5 years in a row.

    • ellisbr says:

You don’t become the all time winningest coach at a place like OU without some knowledge on coaching and hiring the correct staff to help. I really believe this past year was an eye opener for B Stoops. I think he’ll take the right steps to turn this thing back around. If we’re not in the playoffs this upcoming year, I think it’ll happen the next year at the latest. Need to get our D figured out and let Riley teach these guys the new offense. we have talent, now lets develop that talent and go win NCs like Oklahoma should be doing!

    • Bob Edwards says:

I am not sure that the staff changes have been the same as Mack’s. Mack seemed to go for the safe “name” guy trying to please the BMDs. Bob seems to be going for the bright up and comers (Monty, Bedenbauh, Riley). Riley is not a safe hire. Bob is taking a perceived risk with a guy that young. Someone like Frost would have been a safer hire; a bigger name with P5 experience. Easier to say “well look what he did at Oregon, not my fault he couldn’t do it here.” With Riley it is “why did think hiring a guy from East Carolina would work?”

      • MoJoOkie says:

Actually outside of our fans, most responses to the Riley hire are very positive. But in general I agree with your post. Some people base an argument on speculation and hope for the worst so they can be right.

        • Bob Edwards says:

No I agree that he is a good hire, and I think most people recognize that. But being a good hire and a “safe” hire are not the same thing.

          • sracer says:

There is no guarantee to make a safe hire. Bob and mike know football better than any of us.
Lets just hope the younger coaches can bring some fire back to the program!

          • MoJoOkie says:

I agree. Your analogy of the safe hire is spot on. “He was good at another big program, but he just couldn’t stand the heat here; not my fault.”

  • Indy_sooner says:

This speculation is getting super old. How about folks wait and see how the season pans out.? Last year, we were on lofty ground in the top 4. This year we were humiliated and demoted/ fired three coaches. Small or not, it is progress.
I see a humbled and hungry Stoops, completely different than the arrogance Mack fielded in the last years. Folks need to get off his nuts

    • Jeremy Phillips says:

Yeah, I’m not seeing them as being so parallel. Mack had losing seasons in his downfall.. Something Bob has never had…

      • Easton says:

Yeah, not with the parallel fates. Similarities that are haunting, if you allow them to be, but not parallel fates.

    • Katyboomer says:

I agree with your statements but the last sentence is a little harsh.

      • Indy_sooner says:

Agreed and deleted 🙂 Angry Indy is ready for the weekeend

        • Katyboomer says:

I think your point is straight on and agree 100%. I really like CBS and hope he gets this all turned around. I think he is doing what he needs to at this point.

  • Jeff says:

The lucky eye fans are coming out of the wood works

  • hOUligan says:

Don’t agree with Trotter’s premise that everything is piled onto LR’s thin shoulders. Yeah, a lot is being expected of the guy but time for the Sooner D to show up, too. Think the offense will avg 35-40 ppg, again. It’s going to be up to Mike’s, and Monty’s now, defense to limit teams to improve upon last years’ 27 ppg avg, 3rd down efficiency and up the turnover margin.

    • Indy_sooner says:

I agree the defense has to step up alot. The infuriating thing is we have shown we can stop Baylor’s and to some extent, TCU’s offenses. Maybe that’s why we’re stockpiling DBs…

      • Jed says:

outside of Q1, when did we stop Baylor? As I recall, Bryce Petty was throwing 5-8 yard passes at will from anywhere on the field…and we were lucky if we limited YAC.
Don’t mean to be a downer, but that game MUST remain seared in our collective consciousness and never allowed to happen again.

        • Indy_sooner says:

I was referring to 2013. We held them in the first half to the lowest they had seen that year.

    • SoonerOracle737 says:

Yeah, I would be happy if our defense just gave up yards between the 20’s, but stiffened in Red Zone and got a few stops. Any improvement in getting stops would be appreciated greatly.

    • Easton says:

Trotter has to tow the ESPN line of super-drama. But has, in some degree, lost himself in it. Still, he has a sobriety about his journalism that is okay.

  • Cory Reedy says:

Why are all Ohio State fans obnoxious, immature, douche-bags? Have yet to meet one that I like. Just wondering….

    • Steve Johns says:

      It’s an OSU thing

    • ohiosoonerdevildog says:

Amen Cory! I have close family members who have tried to fight me over blohio state games. I wont even go the ou vs tosu game in Columbus in a few years, and I live 25 minutes se of Columbus.

      • Ed Cotter says:

My brother is an OU fan and his wife is a Buckeye fan (She played volleyball there also), so those games are going to be fun for their family. If OU gets back to national prominence you may make that trek to Columbus, so never say never.

        • ohiosoonerdevildog says:

Trust me I have seen how they treat other teams fans, and its not pretty. I have a buddy who went to a osu game and he rooted for the other team, and got a condom full of pee thrown on him. I will not be there. And I pray the Sooner fans that go dont get treated bad.

          • ND52 says:

            @ohiosoonerdevildog:disqus

I know a cop who once worked security in their stadium on game day and he arrested more than one OSU fan for throwing urine on opposing fans. One particular OSU degenerate threw a cup full of his own urine on an elderly couple from above them on a walkway.

I asked what exactly he did to the offender in question and he gladly admitted that he used excessive force in arresting the man. The guy got the full tour of non-lethal police tools: pepper-spray, taser and the asp.

          • ohiosoonerdevildog says:

Yeah I made a mistake and was on tosu campus when they played USC a few years back. And I heard tosu fans telling an elderly couple with their grandson that tosu was going to f#%@ them in their mouth. In front of an 8-10 year old kid, and to a couple in their 60’s. Needless to say the Marine in me took over and that guy wasnt able to speak for a little while. I dont condone violence by any means, but to me that warranted an ass whoopin.

          • Jed says:

Don’t be so quick to reject violence as a solution. It has its place.

          • ohiosoonerdevildog says:

Oh Im not rejecting it. I have had to use it quite often espcially in the Corps. I just meant you cant always beat up people who are rude and obnoxious.

          • ND52 says:

Good for you! Hope you didn’t get into any trouble over that scumbag.

From what I hear, OSU fans are to the Big 10 what LSU fans are to the SEC. We may not be the loudest fan base in the country but Sooners Fans certainly don’t act like that.

          • ohiosoonerdevildog says:

Nope no trouble for me. I walked over told him to apologize, he refused and had a few choice words. I then hit em with a left, right combo and walked away into a crowd. Over in less than 30 seconds and I was long gone within minutes.

  • Jordan Esco says:

Sorry, my computer at home sucks. Just got to work and realized Jefferson’s tweet wasn’t showing up right. It should be coming thru now and I think you’ll enjoy it. I know I did.

  • sooner44 says:

Further proof that you could put Will Ferrell in Chocolat and I might watch it

  • Daddy R says:

The Tony Jefferson tweet is kind of lame if you ask me. Like, no other college athlete with popularity gets that attention at any other school.. OU stands for a LOT more than just cute chicks..

    • Defend Colfax says:

How long has it been since you were 20?

      • Daddy R says:

lol! Still seems lame. (I’m 33)

        • Jed says:

Dude, I’m 53 and, when I last checked about ten minutes ago, cute chicks were still a very worthy thing.
You need to eat some green apples, or oysters, or something.

          • OUn8v says:

            “Green apples” ??? Hmmmmm

          • Daddy R says:

Thanks, I’m good. Look, I realize they are cute, but its just lame to me. EVERY school has cute chicks, unless its an all dude school.

          • Stephen Dale says:

Jed…………..just wait till you get BPH / ED ( both old mens ailments) !!! seeing all that young, gorgeous talent will just make you yearn all the more…sorta like being a eunuch in a brothel…………..

          • Jed says:

I follow ancient regimen taught to me by Mistress of Hong Kong’s Club Volvo: Chinese medicine paired with demanding practice schedule.
Kept her ‘Daddy’ going into his 90’s.

        • Defend Colfax says:

We all love Sooners football. Some of us even care about the direction of the university as a whole. I’d go back to Norman now. I appreciate the type of young man Bob tries to bring in to the program. We’ve produced some solid individuals.
The university offers a lot of opportunity. But in all honesty these are football players. Some never graduate or even feel it’s necessary. I get it. There’s a lot of fame and fortune being thrown at these guys. Athletes are our rockstars now. The music industry is such a commercial wasteland there aren’t anymore real rockstars. I think Tony is half joking but get on twitter, kids are dense. Although saying that, I’ve been to Columbus and Braxton if you’re reading this, southern plains women>rust belt.

          • Daddy R says:

“I’ve been to Columbus and Braxton if you’re reading this, southern plains women>rust belt.”

CLASSIC!!! And probably true, though I’ve never been to Ohio!

    • BigJoeBrown says:

Tony Jefferson’s tweet is hilarious if you ask me. As a young 17/18 year old wanting to go to college. I don’t care if you are playing football or not but if you are a kid looking at schools, that is a pretty good tweet.

      • Daddy R says:

eh, still seems lame. Point was, ALL schools could show that. Thats not something special to just OU.

        • Stephen Dale says:

hope B Miller doesn’t factor to OU.. he would stifle the development of our current QBs and is only a 1 yr factor at best….

    • Jed says:

On the other hand, cute chicks are something that should NEVER be underestimated.

    • Jeff says:

Your killing me! He is a Sooner and that is all that matters! I didn’t understand when he left how so many ripped him but as you can see he still is a Sooner and always will be one

      • SoonerinLondon says:

Ditto, ditto, ditto. And from the Department of Redundancy Department, ditto.

      • Daddy R says:

Simmer down now, simmer down. I like Jefferson, and totally support him as a Sooner. Just thought the pic and recruitment attempt was lame thats all..

LOL, apparently no one else shares my sentiment! Its cool though…

        • Jeff says:

You must have missed it when they were ripping him and Stills a new one. To me it was uncalled for

    • ND52 says:

Not all school have hot chicks and OU has more that it’s fair share. For example, I went to Michigan a few summers ago and saw only a handful of good-looking women.

  • F1at1ined says:

I am interested to know if Lincoln Riley will call plays from the sideline or will he sit in Heupel’s seat in the booth? The ECU pics seem to put him on the sidelines but whether that is because he prefers it or ECU and its usual opponents don’t have the best booth views etc remains to be seen.

    • MoJoOkie says:

I much prefer a coordinator who is on the sideline. To me it’s the difference between explaining something complicated on the phone or doing it across the table. Much is lost without expression.

      • ND52 says:

Shouldn’t the explaining part be done……….in practice?

        • Wilson says:

Every coach that has ever coached in any sport…wish if only that were true…lol

          • ND52 says:

Of course but complex explanations should be tabled until at least halftime. Anything that cannot wait until then represents a lack of preparation on the coach’s part.

        • MoJoOkie says:

Yeah, maybe. But what if the opposing team pulls something out that wasn’t expected? Teams like Oklahoma probably see a few different schemes, formations, and maybe even personnel utilization than your average team might. Cause people like to beat us.

  • ND52 says:

Great White Shark vs Hippopotamus = must see television.

    • SoonerinLondon says:

Hippos kill more people in Africa than any other animal. They are bad mammajamma’s.

Did a rafting trip down the Zambezi river once, from Zambia to Zimbabwe, and before every rapid the guide would point out the likely places where hippos would be and tell us where to swim away from them if we were thrown out of the raft.
