FOOTBALL

Forgive me, but there were a string of, IMO, fantastic BJW related tweets yesterday. Apologies if the following is a little overload for some.

Outstanding.

It was nice to see The Oklahoman devolve to a message board with the suggestion that Braxton Miller could transfer to OU. Never mind the fact he’s about the farthest thing from a prototypical ‘Air Raid’ QB, or whatever modified version of that offense you want to believe Lincoln Riley is going to run.

Classic.

Gamblers, man.

BASKETBALL

Brutal.

Five observations from last night’s embarrassing performance. (NewsOK)

RECRUITING

Sooners 2015 CB offer, Nate Dalton.

OTHER

I’m not entirely sure who the crazier person is in this story. The NASCAR driver whose ex-girlfriend told him she was a trained assassin, or the guy who actually believed her. (Deadspin)

Long-time urban legend.

Some quality people in this one, but calling yourself out for being just another rom-com doesn’t make you any better of a rom-com.

Horror movie? I was laughing thru most of the trailer.

With 22 turnovers, I was amazed the score stayed as close as it did most of the game. Terrible performance. At least Tulsa beat down Uconn.

  • Eric Hoffpauir says:

Why would Liberty make Dalton’s top 5?

    • paganpink says:

NOT a name you usually see on a list of final 5’s!

    • Steven says:

He also spelled Arkansas wrong so I think we’re at least in better shape than them.

    • bjwalker82 says:

That university terrifies me. But seriously I’m going to guess that ‘faith’ is a driving factor.

    • Shelby is a Patriot says:

Liberty is a nice School. He’d get a damn good education there.

      • Jesse says:

You have to be kidding. It was founded by the fraud Jerry Falwell. Don’t be moronic.

        • Shelby is a Patriot says:

You must be new to TFB. We try to keep things civil here. We can disagree about how good Liberty is as a School, and I figure the reasons why we differ are not fit for this site. With that said, there is no need for comments like, “Don’t be moronic.” I’ll leave it at that.

          • Jesse says:

I don’t think there is any other response that is possible after a comment like “Liberty is a nice school. He’d get a damn good education there.” Frankly that is a civil respose to that sort of comment. There is no disagreement. Giving any credibility to that sort of institution is a bad idea of epic proportions.

          • Wilson says:

It’s not always what you say..but how you say it. Be civil. Please most of us are here due to the lack of civility and common human decency on other sites that should be shown to strangers. You never know who is on the other end of the keyboard or their resolve to right a perceived wrong. Let’s all work to keep TFB a site where we come to talk sports with civility and respect for others opinion when stated in a civil manner.

          • Jed says:

            Well said Wilson.
Jesse, I would suspect many of us sympathize with your views on this matter, but we’re all (mostly) trying really hard to keep this site above the verbal shoving match that so many others seem fated to drift into. Please do what you can to help.

          • Shelby is a Patriot says:

“Jesse, I would suspect many of us sympathize with your views on this matter”
That seems a bit counter-productive…However, the rest of what you said I agree with, as well as Wilson. No need for name calling for differing opinions. There are other places for that.

          • Jed says:

Trying to be inclusive and friendly. Thought I’d get more cooperation that way.

          • Shelby is a Patriot says:

Hey, no big deal. Hopefully, he’s one less person resorting to such things.

    • James D-Space says:

Being a Christian school, guessing Dalton is obviously in tune with his faith. Maybe he is being recruited by Toby Mac.
He also has Army on his list, so now we have God & Country. Whomever he chooses, wish him the best of luck…

  • CS says:

didn’t Lumpkin and Dalton want to play for the same school? How come Longhorns not in his final list?

    • blaster1371 says:

Does anyone know how serious Lumkin is about OU? I know he visited after his commit to Texass and he seemed washy washy for awhile. I get the impression he loves the place he is standing in at the moment and bathes in the attention.

  • Jeff says:

OU could be a 12 loss team and be a 7 seed

  • paganpink says:

That looked like Chris Farley with his hand in the blender in that revenge thing! It reminds me of the docu-drama ghost chaser shows on television where they obsess over blobs or hazy areas on their video recordings and work themselves up to a frenzy like kids telling ghost stories on a camping trip LOL!

  • blaster1371 says:

    Way to go Rip!!!!!!!

  • STL Sooner says:

Watching the “Unfriended” clip is better than coffee in the morning. Hump Day, ready or not, here I come!

  • GreginDestin says:

Liberty?, I was stunned by Army…and then I saw the spelling of Arkansas…nope, not West Point material…

  • ruasoonerfan2 says:

We get dalton, Stephens and Patterson that’s should be all the DB’ we need

  • bjwalker82 says:

    Dalton…Liberty eh? Eesh.

  • boomersooner says:

Not to tell the brainiacs their business but gregindestin needs to go. No matter what someone says on here they don’t deserve to be told to go do something to themselves. So Greg if you’re listening. Bye bye

  • Wilson says:

I’m living in NFL football hell (for the past 10 years or more actually). My Raiders just hired Jack Freaking Del Rio! The P.J. Carlisimo of football. Dear football gods how much more penance is required!?! Ok. I’m done ranting about that, at least til spring. MBB had little chance of winning that game in WV with their style. You can’t dribble out of a press (unless you’re Allen Iverson) . Only good quick ball movement works. Hopefully we can beat them here. The Big 12 this year is not for the faint of heart.

    • Brent says:

But that Raider leather jacket Del Rio will wear is going to be sweet!

    • j l says:

Try being a buffalo fan. At least you guys have actually won a superbowl lol.
      We just got rex.

At least the press conferences will be amusing.

  • cheezyq says:

Bob Huggins employs the same philosophy as Bill Belicheck – if you commit enough fouls, you wear down the refs and they’ll eat the whistle. I watched most of the first half, but turned it off. Staten was sitting out of bounds and got up and got the ball, passed to a teammate before establishing himself in bounds. No call, WVU score. WVU player dribbles to baseline, picks up ball…no one is there, so starts dribbling again. One of the officials indicates double-dribble, but doesn’t actually blow the whistle and WVU scores on the play. WVU guard shoves Cousins and then arm-bars him to keep him from getting to the ball and WVU gets the steal and scores.

We obviously didn’t play well either. But what was being played last night wasn’t basketball. It was prison rules rugby.

    • boomersooner says:

yeah it was gross. i was not happy with our effort at all. but i think the starters are worn out already. if i were to read an article that says the entire team has the flu it would not surprise me. lon seems to always get the best out of his guys and k st and last night were less than the best. and yes it looked like they let em play no matter the infraction

      • cheezyq says:

The thing about that style of basketball is that it works great against teams that aren’t prepared for it, and when the refs are feeling lenient. But against a good, prepared team, and when the refs actually do their jobs, WV is going to get destroyed.

        • boomersooner says:

i can see it. they are uber aggressive so kinda sorta like living and dying by the 3 ball. some night you make the 3’s(no foul calls, 50/50 ball don’t go your way), some nights you can’t hit nothing(non stop whistles and stuff bounces your way)

  • EasTex says:

Not a kick ball fan, but for those of you who are this is an amazing goal.

  • Richard North says:

This is in no way whatsoever intended to cast a bad light on Coach Krueger. I can honestly say that (outside of Coach Pop) I would not trade him for any other coach anywhere. This is just musings from a retired basketball coach.

Was WV’s pressure as impressive as the announcers portrayed
it? They did play with lots of confidence and great effort, but it was by no stretch of the imagination the juggernaut we made it appear. I felt like against K-State that we didn’t play with any sense of urgency, and that cost us. However I felt like last night we were ready to match their effort and come away with a road win. So what went wrong? Two things-we were sloppy with the ball and it seemed we didn’t know how to attack their defense. Every defense can be attacked and even exploited with a few minor djustments.

It isn’t unusual to see some type of combination defense for a few possessions during the course of a game. What is unusual is to see it almost every possession of an entire game, because without the element of surprise its effectiveness is usually minimal. You
can read about a combination press in Dean Smith’s book, Multiple Offense and Defense. It is what he calls a 40 Series defense. What seemed to cause us problems was that they were in a man to man until they got an opportunity to run and jump into a trap. They trapped on ball screens, hand offs and change of direction dribbles. Our spacing didn’t allow us to successfully attack once they trapped, thus I fault the players without the ball much more than the ball handler. All this being said, I have a couple of
    suggestions.

Against any trap three passing lanes out of the trap are a must, a middle pass, a sideline
pass and a reversal. When the ball was trapped in the front court you may have noticed that our player whose man left to trap most of the time hung out around the free throw line area covered. He was covered by the man that rotated from our back side wing, thus our open man was always about 45 feet from the trap, an almost impossible pass against a tough trap. That left us without a reversal player. So this should be general rule #1-If your man goes to trap you must step out and be the reversal player. Then if the defense on the back side wing rotates (like they did most of the time) to defend the screener
then the middle of the floor is wide open for our back side wing to flash cut toward the ball. So general rule #2-If you are more than one pass away from the ball and your man leaves you, flash toward the ball thereby filling the middle passing lane out of the trap. Sometimes they didn’t rotate the third player off of our back side wing. If that happens reverse the ball and attack the rim. Thomas is great at that.

The other thing that I feel would have been effective is to just start both posts low and let Woodard penetrate. Off his change of direction dribble they would have likely trapped, and then we apply the two general rules. If they didn’t trap he can get to the rim or
handoff right into our regular offense.

In the back court the same general rules need to be applied. They didn’t put a man on the inbound passer, so passing it back to him immediately would be the simplest. We did that most of the time. Once he gets the ball back everyone needs to head to the front court leaving the middle of the floor open so we can apply rule #2 if they rotate into a trap. Go as far as your man will go with you. That will give our ball handler plenty of
room to operate and an easy recognition if they are coming to trap him.

PS-Buddy, back cut if they are overplaying the dribble handoff.

  • Super Keith says:

Is there a link that goes with the NASCAR story?

Also, I would pay good money and wait in a long line to get a copy of BJW’s book. I hope that happens sooner than later.

    • Jordan Esco says:

Yeah, sorry, that was my bad. Should be there now.

    • Jed says:

I find it wonderful to consider the world Kurt Busch lives in. What a great place it must be! Utterly free of the constraints of logic, probability and Occam’s Razor. A world in which any old sh*t that pops into one’s head can become, just ’cause we want it to be, totally true!
Must be like being a permanent five year old.

  • Jeff says:

    OMG it has already started!!
