Jordan Phillips Granted Additional Year Of Eligibility

Image via NewsOK

Credit Jason Kersey of The Oklahoman for being the first to bring this to light, and OU for later confirming that Sooners defensive tackle Jordan Phillips was awarded a medical hardship waiver for this past season. Phillips missed the final eight games of the regular season and OU’s bowl match-up with Alabama after a long-term back issue required surgery.

With the ruling from the Big 12 Conference, Phillips will be considered a redshirt sophomore for the coming season. Which is welcome news both for the OU defense and Phillips himself who showed the ability to be a dominant force up the middle in the four games he started last year.

It’s stating the obvious given what we saw in 2013 — albeit in a limited sample size — but a healthy Jordan Phillips would have a significant impact on an already promising Oklahoma defense. And while an additional year of eligibility may ultimately prove irrelevant, given that if Phillips were to realize his potential the NFL would surely come calling, simply having the option of another year has the potential to be invaluable for a player still developing his unique physical gifts.

Oh……hell yeah! Our D is gonna be a beast this year!

  • Chris White says:

I’ve said it a couple of times but our position coaches are screwed. How will Gundy every sleep at night knowing he has 5-6 Running backs that could start and need snaps!? How will Montgomery sleep knowing that he developed basically every D-lineman on roster to be ready for snaps this year and we only run a 3-man front?? (Hope you hear the sarcasm) this is a great problem for us to have and I am sick of this layover period in sports!!

    • soonermusic says:

Last time we had 5 or 6 great backs lined up and ready to go, a couple of them got frustrated and transferred, and then more got injured and next thing you know we were thin at rb. I think the climate about play me or I’ll leave has been changed dramatically, and it wouldn’t surprise me if some of the guys who are expected to leave early, think seriously about sticking around, as well.

    • ND52 says:

At most we have 3 rb’s that are in the running to start: Ford, Mixon and Ross.

  • soonernation says:

That is going to be huge for the young man and for us to have him for another year! Now, if we could get DGB and Mayfield cleared for this season…

    • SoonerinLondon says:

DGB would be huge, as I really feel WR is the only thing keeping this O from being outstanding. (Having a goto stud like DGB can help TK from having to be perfect, like he was in the Sugar Bowl.)
Mayfield would be critical because, as we’ve all seen, it only takes one hit or bad landing for TK to be in the locker room. Without Mayfield, our QB experience is nil.
For some reason, I get the feeling DGB might get cleared, but I don’t think there is any real chance of Mayfield clearing.

      • Dana Rogers says:

Not to argue but Ima thinkin the other way. Mayfield cleared (no scholarship thing) and DGB not so much. Suspect time will tell and hope we’re both right.

        • SoonerinLondon says:

Mayfield certainly deserves the break. How you limit a non-scholly player is hard for me to figure.

          • Dana Rogers says:

Just so. “Such is the case at Texas Tech, where any player who transfers to a conference opponent is required to sit out a year and lose a year of eligibility.” NBCNews.com So the support or concern for the player is… somebody help me out here.

  • OUknowitscomin says:

Ok, so the obvious question….latest info how he’s doing? Anyone?
I haven’t seen anything for some time.

    • Jordan Esco says:

Fully cleared to take part once camp starts. M.Stoops has said he (Phillips) feels 100% better than he did last year.

      • OUknowitscomin says:

Thanks, I might have missed something. Last I had heard was from you guys back in Feb.

  • hOUligan says:

Great news for Phillips but as said, expect that he won’t be needing the extra eligibility at OU. If his back holds up well, he will be nfl bound before his SR year. Just hoping to get this year and next (2) before he decides to take a paycheck.

    • SoonerKevin says:

I read this last night on Bleacher Report, and knew I would be reading some good comments this morning on TFB. He will stay healthy if he stay away from standing back flips, and collisions with Ford, or Perine. TFB, could be a chant like SEC.
Speaking of that SEC chant, I watched two sec teams play each other, and the crowd started chanting sec, I thought how dumb is that when both teams play in the sec.

      • Stats says:

That’s funny, and I saw a truck the other day with an SEC sticker on it. No team sticker or insignia, just the SEC Conference. I thought “who does that?”, but then again, I’m surrounded by aggies in the northern suburbs of Dallas.

        • SoonerGoneEast says:

Come on now, if you were aggy wouldn’t you be trying to attach yourself to something else too?

          • Stats says:

True! Aggie transitive logic was: Since SEC > Big XII, then
can’t compete for CC in SEC > can’t compete for CC in Big XII.

      • SoonerinLondon says:

That is dumb. They should have been chanting “Us, us, us”.

      • SoonerGoneEast says:

SEC! SEC! SEC! This thoughtless self-deception is easily and willingly entrenched throughout the south and in any culture whose only redeeming qualities are the result of the whole being greater than the sum of the parts. Although most adherents to the SEC myth are likely HUGE fans of Aristotle (or likely great thinkers themselves), they’re probably too busy with their sweet tea and moon pies to have gotten around to his Sophistical Refutations and the Fallacy of Composition. May I suggest time and patience to help ease your frustration with them as they make their way thru this transitionary period.

        • Jed says:

Without specifically addressing the role Aristotelian epistemology plays, with application to SEC fans in the particular, it is unlikely that compelling responses to the Refutations or Fallacy can be arrived upon.
Most concisely: “What can an SEC fan know; and how can he, or she, be certain?”

  • vargo05 says:

So he wasn’t 100% last year and played as well as he did before missing the rest of the season. If he’s truly 100% this year, he has an incredible chance to be an All-American. He was on his way to being All-Big 12 last year at 70%.

  • Steven White says:

Very good news for Jordan. Here’s to Jordon staying healthy and has a very successful year.

  • Super K says:

Man I get chill bumps thinking about the points of pressure this front can create with Phillips on the field. And his great length is going to make sure those RBs that were going through arm tackles last year for yards will get nothing. Ah feels good to have OU defense back.

  • ToatsMcGoats says:

Congrats on the “Editor/Contributor” title, Jordan!

  • Ryan says:

So why didn’t Corey Nelson get a Medical Redshirt? Phillips and Nelson effectively missed the same amount of time. I believe Nelson only played one more half

    • Jordan Esco says:

And as stupid as that “logic” is, that half is exactly why he didn’t get one.

  • BoomerNation says:

Ayyy! Jordan Esco – editor/contributor! I like it!

  • Boom says:

So does this mean you can’t be the Pres of the fan club?

  • Ryan says:

Is Quincy Russell a total flop, or will be in the rotation this year? a three deep DT front with Phillips, Russell, Wade and Orso Red shirting would be glorious

    • rphdenton says:

just a poster, but I haven’t read or heard anything re russell that indicates he’s involved with any rotation……..he’s buried on the chart………

    • Roger Nixon says:

I believe Quincy was injured most of last year. I haven’t heard anything during the offseason to indicate he is better/worse.

  • kt-raida says:

I’m so use to getting bad news every summer regarding OU football. I have to knock on wood. And pray because this has the makings of a very special year!

  • pitbull17 says:

That’s awesome news for him and the Sooners! I can’t wait for him and the rest of the D to wreak havoc this season.
