Trevor Knight Out For Second Consecutive Week (UPDATED)

On Monday morning’s Big 12 conference call, Bob Stoops announced that quarterback Trevor Knight has still not made the necessary progress in his recovery and will miss his second consecutive game on Saturday against Kansas. It’s a little surprising Knight would be ruled out this early given that the decision was not made (or at least we were led to believe) until Thursday last week. Regardless, Stoops was very clear that Knight will be out.

So it will once again be Cody Thomas, making his second career start, under center for the Sooners.

– UPDATE: Stoops also confirmed at his presser on Monday that Geneo Grissom and Julian Wilson both will not play against Kansas as well.

Call me crazy, but I’m excited to see Thomas get the start again. For a “pocket QB” he ran the read better than TK and I think he has a ton of upside as a passer once he gets over his jitters. He was 3-3 in the 2nd half.

    • Ed Cotter says:

      His fakes were really good.

    • Cush Creekmont says:

Agree completely. Thomas was not nearly as smooth running the ball or as good at making tacklers miss, but his reads and fakes were vastly better than those of Knight. I would think Thomas would be “killer” with the fake and pass that KSU pulls.

      • JB says:

Cody ran the ball well, but he’s not the passer that Trevor Knight is, and TK isn’t that good. 7-17 with 0 TDs and 3 INTs on the first half is not inspiring. This season is already in the crapper so it’s good for backups to get experience.

The good news is Baker Mayfield has a legitimate chance to win the starting QB job next year, and he certainly played better than any QB in the spring and has already started D-1 games.

    • ratman says:

      Absolutely agree.

    • Pokerman says:

From what I saw Thomas is not an upgrade. It appears to me that Knight has the stronger arm. His passes have more zip on them. However, Knight needs to work on his mechanics before next year in order to improve his accuracy. I believe either is serviceable as long as Heupel doesn’t try to turn them into pure pocket passers.

      • Michael Darling says:

Cody Thomas is a collegiate QB and a collegiate right fielder. He’s got the arm…I think he’s a more natural passer than TK with a quicker release too.

    • SoonerfanTU says:

It’s easy to run the read against a terrible defense. See TK against ISU.

Remember when we heard about this Trevor kid tearing up the scout team. Every year the kid we aren’t playing is the next Heisman winner. Here is where I have my biggest issue with JH, QB development. I am sure in the Bama game Josh had extra time to coach up Trevor, now without the time, I don’t think the QBs are getting the same coaching.

  • Sooner_Ace says:

Timing is early and odd for this staff, staring into the crystal ball (and just for the hell of it) this kind of has the old Paul Thompson to WR vibe……

  • FlatLander says:

One thing I don’t miss is, every time Knight got hit I wondered if he was injured. That was started getting pretty old.

  • hOUligan says:

Feel bad for TK, especially as it was a cheap shot. It is what it is. Like Knight and think he has a lot of upside. Going forward, get the reps for Cody so that the staff can see what his strengths are and better prepare him come spring. Knight seems to be one of those guys that is just not durable so whether Thomas earns the starting job or continues to come off the bench next season, he’s ready to go.

  • soonerjunky says:

Got to admit I think Thomas actually looked more promising than Knight. The game plan was awful at first, he made his first career start. We knew he would have some struggles, but he did look more comfortable in the pocket. He only made one awful pass under pressure; and that was the int in the end zone. I’m glad we get a second look at him. If he does well I bet he starts against osu as well.

  • Who Cares? says:

This isn’t about football guys/girls. I just hope TK is ok. The hit he took was a potential life-changer. Just more cheap s&@t BU nonsense. They’re what we thought they were…..dirty players. My respect for Briles just tanked….alot. I wouldn’t be shocked if TK hangs it up in favor of his longterm health.

    • red clay says:

      ^^ agreeance.
I believe “quadriplegia” was the term – if you need that explained, that means “all four limbs paralyzed.”

TK’s ability to walk is more important than a _____ game.
      Have some perspective, people.

  • Andrew Kelemen says:

I guess this means Bell will be taking snaps? I have to wonder if some of the dings that TK9 took earlier in the year were the same thing. In the KSU game didn’t he leave to have the same “shoulder / neck” area examined?

  • Jason Vos says:

Knight is good to go, the coaches just want to see what Cody Thomas brings to the table

  • Jed says:

Good Lord! If Bob says he ‘hasn’t made the necessary progress’, then the funeral was Sunday.

  • Krys Allen says:

I must be in the minority thinking that Cody Thomas is probably not an upgrade over Knight. He did do well with his run reads, but the passing was very poor for the most part. Hopefully it was just nerves/wind and we see more accuracy on Saturday. Also hopefully we throw less than 20 passes all day. #FireJH

  • BigJoeBrown says:

I like to look at stats…not really decipher anything from them but just check them out. Last year Knights first couple of starts….then Thomas so far.

    Knight
    UL Monroe 11/28 86 yards 3 TD 1 INT, 103 Yds rushing
    WVU 10/20 119 yards 1TD 2 INT, 42 yds rushing

    Thomas
    Texas Tech 10/20 133 yards 1 TD 3 INT, 103 yds rushing

  • Sooner Ray says:

If you’re breaking in a new QB, TT and Kansas are a good way to go. Cody looked very good running the read plays, needs some experience passing. He made the same bad type throws that Trevor made in his early starts and should improve with a little more time on the field. I just hope we run, run, run, and not try to get Cody on the Heisman watch list.

  • kt-raida says:

    Praying for a full recovery.

  • James says:

I look to see a fair amount of improvement this week for Cody. At home versus lesser competition and with the one game under his belt….. We shall see.

    • Fear The Magic says:

Im not so sure that Kansas is lesser competition than TTech. Techs D is pretty much as bad as it gets.

  • Stephen Dale says:

If I’m the OU head coach and/or the OU administration, T Knight retires from the game and never dons the ‘crimson & creme’ again…. Too much risk of permanent injury and too great a risk for the University to let him suit up again. OU will do just as well with others leading the team and Knight can get his degree, get on with his life and enjoy full mobility. As for the baylor DL ( Oakman) who delivered the cheap shot to injure Knight, OU’s players need to make every effort to take out Oakman;s knees next season in Waco. It would be worth a penalty to execute the perfect ‘chopblock’ and destroy one of Okeman’s knees. Whichever OU player does the job authomatically becomes a team captain.

    • thebigdroot says:

Truly sad that you think it is ok to intentionally hurt another player. SMH

I think you have some serious “issues”.
Ever hear of, “two wrongs don’t make a right”.

    • OUknowwhatitis says:

Isnt Oakman a senior anyway.. just was a regular rough play of football

      • Stephen Dale says:

OUKnow………….Oakman may be a RS-JR but is listed as a junior, elgibility-wise. Knight was already down when Oakman clocked him…It was an unnecessary, chickens***, dirty play…….what comes around, goes around.

  • sooners12thman says:

The biggest difference between Cody Thomas Vs. Trevor Knight is that Cody doesn’t hesitate and reads the defense better. Didn’t zero in on wr’s scanned the field well. On the 1st play of the game he was pursued and got out of pocket threw ball away as where Trevor would try an do TO MUCH! #RideCodyThomasUntilSpring15′

    • SoonerfanTU says:

      lol

No, the biggest difference is that at this point, TK is at worst an adequate passer, and Thomas hasn’t even shown to be that yet, in a game.

  • Billy says:

Man. Feel bad for the kid. He is glass, or really unlucky.

  • SoonerinLondon says:

Guess the 3 OU QBs fighting for next year’s job will come into August with 25 or so starts between them. Should be good competition, especially with DGB outside, Shep in the slot, and Perine, Ross, Ford & Mixon in the backfield.
Gonna be tough to replace Thomson and Williams, but Frison and Brown have a chance to be just as good.

    • Sooner Ray says:

I love the line we have but I can’t wait to see how our new line coaches plug their recruits in. I don’t expect much drop off if any.

  • soonermusic says:

I’m quite sure that Stoops and Co. made it very clear from the beginning that they recruited TK (and every other qb, btw) for his passing ability. They love the ability to make plays with the feet and want that, but if they didn’t think TK’s passing ability could stand purely on its own, they would not have recruited him. They’ve said it over and over.

I agree with the coaches and disagree with those who think TK is not a pocket passer, or that they’re “trying to make him into one,” or that they recruited him primarily to run the zone read. I know I’m repeating myself, but most of the games where he’s been accused of being inaccurate have been when those around him haven’t played very well. He has things hat he needs to improve upon, but when everyone else has done well, blocking, route running and spacing etc. he’s been great. Most of his great throws this season have come from the pocket.

Running the ball is a fabulous dimension to add on top of that, but his passing ability can stand on its own. His performance in the ‘Bama game and the K-State game as well as some others have proven that. This is part of what separates him from many if not most other mobile qb’s, and, I suspect was part of the reason we heard so many slobbering compliments about his play on the scout team.

The same assessment applies to Cody. He’s brand new, and has some learning to do. I imagine he won’t learn as fast as the online taskmasters want and will suffer in their opinion because of it, but IMHO he is monstrously talented as well.

I am concerned about TK’s future, as most here are, and won’t be surprised if he doesn’t play again. If there is a risk, I hope he errs on the side of the “big picture.” However, the best outcome would be for him to fully recover, have an accurate assessment that there is no increased danger due to the incident, and for us to be able to see him play again. If that happens, I would expect him to win the QB “battle” next spring. just mho as always.

  • Shelby is a Patriot says:

A little too early to discuss whether or not CT is an upgrade or better than TK, or vice versa. Only time will tell, but for the Team’s sake I hope CT does good enough so we can win.

    • SoonerOracle737 says:

I like what Perine says about CT.
      From NewsOK.com:
But Perine said Monday that on zone read plays, Thomas keeps the ball about “half-a-second” longer than Knight, which made a difference, too.

“I think that half-a-second, it really gets the defense committed to one run,” Perine said. “And then when he pulls it out the backside, he can run for days with that. I think that had a lot to do with his success, how long he holds it in the mesh.”

      • paganpink says:

I think we all noticed how much better he runs that play then Trevor Knight does. It seems to make up for whatever speed advantage TK has over him. TK runs it so slowly no one in the stadium is fooled on most plays. Cody was running it so well the camera man and the defense were completely fooled, repeatedly, during the game. It takes a lot of practice to run it so well and it is hugely more effective.

        • SoonerOracle737 says:

Yes, it did fool everybody including camera man. I kept having to look closely at Cody’s arms/hands to see if he actually gave the ball or not. Now that is a good sign on play fakes. CT does it very well.

  • SoonerinLondon says:

Would Braxton Miller be an upgrade? I’m sure he’ll be looking for a 1 year gig.
