OU-Texas Game To Stay At Cotton Bowl Thru 2025

The Dallas Morning News is reporting that the OU-Texas game — now known as the Red River Showdown, but forever known by purists as the Red River Shootout — will remain in Dallas and at the Cotton Bowl through 2025 after all sides agreed to an extension. The existing agreement had gone through 2020, so this obviously just adds another five years on to the deal. The extension is expected to be formally announced Tuesday afternoon according to the DMN story.

Many fans on both sides of the Red River are waiting for what some feel is inevitable and the game eventually moving to a venue somewhere like JerryWorld AT&T Stadium, where the Cowboys play. However, both schools and the city of Dallas remain happy with the current arrangement and a change in venue will clearly not be happening any time soon.

For anyone who has ever attended the game, you know just how unique of an experience the game, surrounded by the Texas State Fair, can be and how drastically different that experience would be were the game to ever move sites. It would appear those concerns can once again be put on hold a little while longer (for now).

Good, it doesn’t need to go anywhere, especially not Jerry’s world. It just wouldn’t be the same.

  • Sooner Ray says:

I would almost rather see a home and home than move to Jerry’s.

  • Eric Hoffpauir says:

How about staying at the Cotton Bowl through forever?

  • L'carpetron Dookmarriot says:

It is always going to be there. It was never being considered to go elsewhere. It should never go elsewhere.

    This is not news.

If anyone thought the Red River Shootdown was ever going anywhere, then they’re living in a cotton bowl of rice krispies in the sky.

Natrell Curtis signed w/Aztecs, Orlando Brown may go the way of prep school, and some worry about Vontre McQuinnie, Question I’m asking is how would that affect the over-all scholarships? On a upper note we’re looking better for qb Gibson and lb DeBerry. Like Sooner Ray and East Tex say smooth sailing is ahead, just keep the faith.

    • Jordan Esco says:

“Natrell Curtis signed w/Aztecs” – link? And, fwiw, it’s not all that uncommon for a kid to dual-sign if grades are an issue.

Thanks-I read that on your posting. Just wondering are those 2014 offers just history( in a worst case scenario) ? The second thing I do in the morning is read your postings and TFB postings, get’s me happy most of the time lol.

        • Jordan Esco says:

haha, thanks! I see a tweet now in another thread about it. I don’t know that things are officially dunzo, but I’d say it is pretty close to that. If this had happened back on NSD (or closer to it), then I’d say it’d be less of a big deal. This close to when he s/b arriving on campus, doesn’t seem like it’ll have a positive ending for OU’s chances.

Jordan… Stay away from the fair the second weekend in October k?
    #TheCurseIsReal

    • Sooner Ray says:

If he throws down a curse, pretty sure that constitutes a ban. 🙂

      • J J says:

Oh the Jordan Esco curse is real. OU escaped his curse in south bend, possibly because of Heath & my livers… Or something like that

        • Jordan Esco says:

I deemed that worth the sacrifice 😉

          • J J says:

Lol. Because Heath & I are always willing to take one or 17 for the team? Man, you should have seen my ass walking ALL the way back to where we parked… I swear it was 6 miles! And a RedRiver sacrifice probably would require more coordination

  • Jordan Esco says:

Pretty standard stuff, but just wanted to post OU’s confirmation of the report.

I’m so sick of that dump. I’m ready for a venue change.

  • Super Keith says:

Even with the renovations, the Cotton Bowl is kind of a crappy stadium…however, the environment could not be replicated anywhere else…it has to be at the Cotton Bowl, during the State Fair.

  • Ed Cotter says:

Getting to this game is on my bucket list. Never miss it on TV, but have never been in person. When I go, gonna spend a week and take in the fair and other sights in Dallas. BOOMER!!

    • ruasoonerfan2 says:

      SOONER

    • J J says:

It won’t take a week.. Just sayin.

      • SoonerfanTU says:

To see everything there is to see in Dallas?

It could easily take a week, depending on what kind of stuff he enjoys.

        • J J says:

I guess it depends on what he likes & if he means FtWorth also., then maybe a week. That’s assuming a day each for ou/tx, the cowgirl game & if the rangers are in town. There’s really not THAT much in either Dallas or FtWorth… Just my opinion from 85 miles away…

    • EasTex says:

As long as you are there on Friday before the game you are golden.
Just be at the stadium early to watch the team buses come in and the bands march in, it will get you pumped up like you can’t believe.

  • Shelby is a Patriot says:

I’m sure they’ll eventually find something they don’t like about “Showdown” and change it again. I’m glad it’s staying in the Cotton Bowl, with the State Fair and the ability to see Big Tex if he ever catches on fire again, you can’t move it.

  • EasTex says:

I’ve been going to the Texas State Fair since the late 50’s and old as the Cotton Bowl is it has all the echoes from some great games and I love the way the fans are right on top of the field, instead of set so far away like Jerry’s Death Star.
The sights, the sounds and the smells add to the celebration and to me nothing smells or tastes better than a 10a.m. Corny Dog before the grease in the fryers gets all stanky.
If they ever do move the game to the Death Star it will be a sad day, but unlike some I would hate to see a home and home. I vowed to never set foot in Austin 28 years ago and have maintained that status and hope I always will.

    • FeedtheMonster says:

I can’t stand the thought of them in Norman.

    • J J says:

Well put. I have been to see OU in jerry world 3 times & it was twice too many. If we end up in the playoff game there, I ll make the short drive. But there are things that are holy in my book. Playing at the state fair is one if them. Screw jerry world!

  • SoonerfanTU says:

So happy to hear this. That game is so unique b/c of the location, and tradition means something to me. If both schools will keep the pressure on the City of Dallas, eventually the stadium won’t be an issue.

  • Won says:

As a season ticket holder who will never qualify based upon priority points and get OU-Sucks tix. I think an option for each school to pick one game every 10 years and play it on their home field would be nice.
