Taking A Closer Look At WVU’s Offensive Line

Image via bluegoldsports.com

Happy Friday one and all!  I wanted to get this out to you guys today so we could have a few things to look for from a WVU O-Line standpoint.  Overall they’re a very big, athletic group.  Most of these guys were recruited by Coach Bedenbaugh when he was the O-Line coach there, so understandably their offensive line is full of guys who are built a lot like ours.  They average about 6’4 1/2″ and around 312 lbs.  Quinton Spain is their most seasoned player at left guard, and he is their largest at 6’4″ 332.  Without a doubt this will be the best offensive line we’ve faced to this point.  They’re technically sound, and they are equally adept at both run and pass blocking.

I went back and watched the WVU/Bama game to see how they matched up against a really talented front.  Given some execution mistakes they made with some dropped passes late in the game, they still gave Alabama all they wanted on that opening weekend.  It was on a neutral field, so neither team really had the advantage of the crowd.  For us to go in there tomorrow night and dominate defensively will be a tall task.  Granted, Alabama doesn’t blitz nearly as much as we do. And they rely more on winning one-on-one match-ups while playing a base defense that depends a lot on adjustments and ‘out-athleting’ you at every position.

Meanwhile, Monty and Stoops want to win one-on-one match-ups too, but they’ll overload a side and do a lot of zone blitzing. Plus, I believe our linebackers are better than Bama’s and we also have some special players across our front in Phillips, Tapper and Chuka has really come into his own this year as well.  A’Shawn Robinson is the nose for Bama and while he’s a good player, Phillips is the guy this will all come down to tomorrow night.  If Phillips can occupy a couple of guys inside and keep our backers clean, we’ll be able to shut down their run game.  If we can do that, then Striker and Geneo will have a field day as well as some safeties like Hayes who we’ve used a lot in the blitz game to this point.

What’s crazy is that as I type this, how often in the past few years have we been able to say our defensive front is better than Alabama’s?  Our ability to have five people on the line of scrimmage against most fronts, with Striker and Geneo on the outside, gives us a lot of versatility to play the run and blitz from a lot of different angles.  Like K said this week, if their run game isn’t working then it will be a long night for them.  They depend a lot on the screen game and deep crosses that isolate your safeties.  Pressure will be the key to this game, but it’s not going to come easily.  This offensive line is physical, athletic, and nasty.  Just what you’d expect from players that Coach B recruited.

We saw Clint Trickett a few years ago as a true freshman back in 2010 against FSU when we knocked E.J. Manuel out of the game.  He’s grown up a lot since then and can play some good ball.  He’s going to get the ball out quickly, so Striker and Geneo will need to change directions quickly in the flats to help with the bubble screen game and conventional screens.  Julian Wilson and Zack Sanchez are going to have to tackle in space really well and if we can do that, we’ll be okay.  I expect Kevin White, who goes 6’3″ 210, on the outside at receiver to try to test Sanchez’s shoulder early.  He’s a big receiver much like Sammy Watkins who played for Clemson.

One of two things is going to happen.  We’re going to come out and play clean, get some stops/turnovers early, and force them to be reliant on the pass game. Which if that’s the case, we’ll win in long yardage and known passing downs.  But I tell you what, if we come out not getting stops and let them score a few times then it’s gonna be a dog fight.  West Virginia is a heck of a lot better than they get credit for.  That O-Line is a good one and we will be tested.  If we dominate this team, then we’ll know we are a truly special unit.  If we don’t…it’ll be a nail-biter down to the end.  Our O-Line will have to out perform theirs and keep them off the field to allow our defense rest.  Some sacks, three and outs, turnovers will be what they need.  If West Virginia has a weakness, it’s Trickett wanting to hold the ball to long if his initial read isn’t there.  That’s not good for them.  I’m ready for kickoff.

……sounds like an honest appraisal as opposed to the homers …….think we may face our first taste of adversity in this one……..thxs

  • Swanny says:

There is so much familiarity between these two programs right now. It’ll be really difficult for either of us to do something the other wasn’t prepared for. It’ll come down to the players on the field making plays. Can’t wait for Saturday!

  • Bluegrass Sooner says:

I am excited to see how the Sooners will react to being challenged in a very difficult place to play. Like you said, JY, this is the kind of game where we can see how special these Sooners can really be!! I only hate that we have to wait until tomorrow night to see it.

  • Krys Allen says:

Man, all this talk is making me nervous… can’t wait for the game to start so we don’t have to imagine the matchup anymore. I have a feeling if we don’t score on our first drive we will be playing catch up all night.

  • JJsooner1 says:

JY would it be fair to say their OLine pass blocks better than run block? They only average 3.8 per carry and if we can take that away, its on like donkey kong. And just a game note about Worley…….not good. He’s done.

I am nervous about this game but I think what will help us is our blitz guys are fast, Striker, Grissom, and they even sent Hayes a few times last week, I don’t think WVU is going to be able to block all that speed especially from all the different angles Stoops uses.

How true, if someone would have said in 2012, ‘OU D front 7 will be better than Bama in 2yrs’ – they would have been laughed off internet. Serious statement for our coaches.

    • ToatsMcGoats says:

Talk about a recruiting tool. In two years, Mikey has taken this D from laughing stock to one of the top units in the country.

  • JJsooner1 says:

Yet another slant on their O Line. They rank 107th in sacks allowed giving up nearly three per game. Coach Mike has to be chomping at the bit.

    • FeedtheMonster says:

Yeah, especially because Mike has probably had this one circled for a while, because of what they did to “his” defense the first time in Morgantown. I’m not saying they aren’t good, they are. I think they will move the ball, but it wont be fun or by any means easy for them.

      • 22dupree says:

Yep, I think back to the Oklahoma State game in 2003 in Norman. Our staff took that one personal as oSu had won the last two games and Les Miles was blathering on about “one team is the best in the country, or so we’re told” … the pain and duress our D brought that day was classic. Granted, this one is not in Norman and the game was changed offensively quite a bit, but I hope our defense can play with that level of focus, be assignment sound and get after WVU hard tonight.

  • Doobie74OU says:

First of all, Shout out to the Man Cub! Hope the family is well, JY! Second how much came Coach B knowing all the strengths and weaknesses of the WV O-Line help our D-Line. Like if they are more susceptible to inside moves, spin move, or speed, rush etc.

  • rphokc says:

tfb……..on fridays, get jy to do one of these each week, someone do one on the opponent d and that would be a pretty decent opponent preview……..just an idea

  • thebigdroot says:

Prediction- Tapper has 2014 coming out party. Lot of his family and friends will be on hand.

  • D'Pez Poopsie says:

I don’t know why this game scares to poo gas outta me…

    • JJsooner1 says:

ANY road game bothers me alot. Stuff happens and the crowd will be nuts but TK has shown he likes the lights and noise. OUr D has been looking to this game for a year and for some, 2 years. Coach B did recruit these guys but he hasn’t been coaching them and that’s a plus cause he’s coaching our guys. OU has obvious advantages on D and special teams and the O will move the ball.

    • EasTex says:

I’m not scared. No why? Those people have muskets, a one shot front stuffer.

  • soonermusic says:

“heck of a lot better…” Yeah, that’s the sense that I get, too. Can’t help but wish we had Ford; the more experience back there the better. My hunch is that if the kids can deal with the “on the road” part of it, and not let that lead to being overcome by being “away,” then the game will go fine. But I fully expect it to be a huge challenge.

  • John Garner says:

Great analysis!!! Only at TFB can we get something as detailed and instructional as this piece. Thanks a ton. Went well with my coffee.

  • leatherneck1061 says:

I’m thinking this one has gotta be personal for Mike. If this was the team that made him retool the entire D after giving up 49 points, shutting them down in Morgantown would be sort of the ultimate vindication of all his efforts. This is going to be a tough game – no doubt about that. But this is such an opportunity for our D to shine if they can handle the pressure.

  • ToatsMcGoats says:

Excellent, JY! Blazing with confidence, yet adding just enough suspense to take it over the top!

  • soonerthunder says:

Thanks, but I’ll kindly disagree that they played Bama on a “neutral” field. It would be like us playing BYU in Dallas or worse, IMO.

  • WilliamJack says:

Trickett has matured and is a decent passer. That said, he is still pretty thin and fragile. I wouldn’t be surprised if he doesn’t finish the game.

  • soonerthunder says:

Injuries? Charles Walker? We know about Ford. How’s Sanchez? Evans?

    • ToatsMcGoats says:

Walker is out for another 3-4 weeks I believe, and Ford is out for 2-3. Sanchez and Evans are both playing, as far as I know.

      • Zack says:

And I expect ford to probably miss more time. That timeline doesn’t seem right for a lower leg issue and I don’t want to see us rush ford back if it could potentially make the injury worse.

        • soonerthunder says:

Everybody else okay two deep? Dimon? I thought we had some OGs banged up the first game or so. They okay?

          • Zack says:

Shead and Evans may have been banged up but I haven’t heard they would miss this week. And haven’t heard much about dimon but he may be back?

  • JT says:

Why take a closer look at WVU’s offensive line when we could take a closer look at Trickett’s amazing hair?

  • Chris White says:

    CHUUUUUKA!!

    • Zack says:

I think chuka is quietly having an all big 12 season and I say that because I think he’s going to continue to get 1on1 matchups and so far he’s winning those.

  • EasTex says:

    Well said, JY.
Conversely, this will clearly be the biggest challenge their O-line has faced thus far.

  • JT says:

All the College GameDay talking heads sans Corso are calling for the upset. Funny that WVU now gets media love after they hang with Bama almighty. I think the media is starting to figure out what the TFB community has known for a while now: the college football pantheon reaches beyond the U of SEC.

    • EasTex says:

Was talking to a really nice guy yesterday who is a Big Ten fan and his impression of the media love for the sec sounded almost exactly like how we sound here. Which pretty much confirmed what I thought, that the majority of fans aren’t drinking the sec flavored sport drink.

      • JT says:

An SEC-flavored sport drink tastes like year-old, sweaty gym towel wrung out in a concoction of urine from various zoo animals. So I hear. Nike approved.

  • SamSooner says:

So, I watched the feature on Eric Striker, on ESPN. That was cool. I guess I stayed too long because of the ESPN bias. Kirk and Desmond picked WVU. Lee picked OU but in a high scoring game. No homework at all and even worse, there was nothing to support their picks. So, for me, it came down to this: though it was subtle, the SEC bias reared it’s ugly head: WVU was picked to win because of how they played against Alabama. And Alabama is better than OU, right? Logical deduction would have you pick WVU. Arrgh!!! I can’t wait for the OU players have their Torrance Marshall moment and call them out for their total disrespect.

    • Zack says:

Well we can complain all we want but if ou or Oregon don’t take the title from the southeast then it won’t matter. Ou needs to dominate today

      • hOUligan says:

Think if OU plays a solid game and wins, even by 4-7, they are good. Just need to win out and hope OU draws the lone sec team in the first round and sends them packing…no sec in the final…fans around the nation will cheer. Of course, domination would be good.

    • soonerthunder says:

I was at the gym and saw that. (I don’t watch them unless they are at an OU game, otherwise.) But what you said is EXACTLY what I thought.

Their logic (?): Bama BARELY beat WV at home (basically). Since Bama is SEC, and no one can approximate the SEC, surely OU can’t win AT WV! It just goes to reason.

First, OU has a better D than Bama, and 2nd OU has a better O than Bama, and 3rd OU has a better kicking game than Bama. I’m going to say OU 42-21.

I think they are HOPING OU loses b/c they want 2 SEC teams in the playoffs, which will anger me if it happens. Let them have one and see if they dominant the NCs any more. Won’t happen. FSUs, Oregons and OU/Baylors will win more than they lose, IMO, against the SEC best.

      • Zack says:

You’re right they’ve always seemed to have an anti ou stance. And you’re completely right about ou being better than bama right now. I’m not sure that bama won’t end up the best in the sec this year but I hope they do and that ou plays them again to prove last year wasn’t the fluke everyone thinks it was. Another thing that bothers me is fans of other big 12 schools are boasting that the sec can be beat but they aren’t giving ou the credit for exposing bama. Especially the Baylor fans how can’t hang their hats on a bcs win.

  • Richard Armstrong says:

    JY,

I’ve got to say thank you very much for you informative posts on the lIne. The knowledge you have imparted has opened up a new aspect of the game to me and has made watching the game much more interesting. Especially when I replay the game from my DVR. I’m repeatedly rewinding each play and watch the line in slow motion to see how their work made the run or the pass possible.

    Thank you.
