Reports: Baker Mayfield’s Appeal Denied (UPDATED, It’s Official Now)

Image via Tulsa World

While there is still no official word from the University of Oklahoma, there are now multiple reports stating the NCAA has denied Baker Mayfield’s appeal for immediate eligibility. Jake Trotter was the first to refute the initial report later in the same day it was made.

Now, both NewsOK and the Tulsa World are reporting the same. So it would appear whatever chances there were of Mayfield seeing the field, or at least being eligible to do so, in 2014 are now over.

Again, according to Trotter, there was even an additional appeal to Tech on the part of OU brass to try and see if they would relent on their refusal permitting Mayfield’s eligibility. Alas, to no avail.

At the time of this posting, however, there are conflicting reports as to whether or not Mayfield will lose a year of eligibility for this season. Some are reporting that is the case, as it would have been prior to his appeal, but Trotter is indicating that has yet to be decided.

Regardless, whether he loses the year or not he will not be eligible to play for the Sooners this season.

– UPDATE: Here is a story from Eric Bailey of the Tulsa World who spoke with Mayfield’s father. And as you might imagine, he’s not very happy with Kliff Kingsbury.

– UPDATE: It’s official.

I hope we put up 80 points on tech.

  • soonerinks says:

Kudo’s to the Brainiacs for not getting caught up in the rush to report first. Sometimes, constraint is a very good thing. I never could see Tech agreeing to letting him compete this year, especially since we have not faced them yet this year. Hopefully, he can use this year as a redshirt year and still have 3 to play.

    • James says:

Not positive but I don’t think it works that way. The way I understand it is he loses a year and will have only 2 years of eligibility remaining.

      • soonerinks says:

Think you may be right but hope OU petitions for him to get his year back. The whole thing is ridiculous!

      • roygbell says:

I could sure be wrong, but I am under the impression that he can’t play this year so loses this year, plus an additional year of eligibility. I do know that the original intent of the rule was to eliminate intraconference transfers by imposing the severe loss of eligibility.

Hopefully, someone with a better understanding of the conference rule can help here.

  • Jared William Reininger says:

Tech’s moral compass is so jacked up I would be surprised if they could find the parking lot.

The kid wasn’t on scholarship, won them 7 games. Then he was replaced with someone else they seemed dead set on making their longtime starter and as I understand it didn’t want to “waste” a scholarship, so he left. So why not go play for a school that has the tradition and a good chance to compete instead of the Sand Aggies. This is the school throwing a fit that he didn’t want to ride the bench and pay for school to watch his team suck after carrying them to 7 wins. I feel bad for the kid, I really do.

    • Easton says:

Real bad at Tech. Really disappointed in the way they operate.

      • Jared William Reininger says:

Seems they forgot to realize that it is supposed to be about making good young boys into good young mean and not completely about winning. Which they don’t do much of the latter anyhow.

        • Easton says:

Yeah its actually pretty disturbing how adults at an institute of higher education would consciously think and act this way. I understand well now why Baker wanted out.

          • Jared William Reininger says:

I think Webb is the more “Pro” style quarterback, he is tall and is built more like a NFL quarterback, but I don’t think he is as good as Mayfield. They want to put someone in the pros cause they haven’t done much of that in a while, and I think now they realize Mayfield was much more talented so they are trying to cover their ass for a year.

  • Zack says:

So uh I can’t wait to hear what Blevins says today at 5:30.

  • Krys Allen says:

Any idea if “this season” includes Post Season play?

  • Thomas Lenard says:

This should be mentioned to every visiting recruit that is even thinking about considering tt. OU has released scholorship players to other big XII schools and other school with no terms. I would be telling recruits….If you go to tt, and something happens and you dont think it is the best place for you anymore, they will not release you…….

  • SoonerJon says:

We need to start a “Free Baker Mayfield” movement!!! Tech sucks, so we need to take it to them with a public outcry.

  • Hollerback says:

If TT ever gets another walk-on player to sign, I pitty him.

  • Boom says:

I’m not surprised by Tech. I look through their recent history and see these events.
The botched Leach firing, they didn’t want to pay his big bonus so they hid behind the James incident.
Cliffy runs off all of the QB’s, hmm.
CB hits and breaks bones in a girls face only to reinstated and playing because the girl said she started it.
TT leaked rumors that their DC was under the influence then said, he couldn’t get along with anyone.
    Most penalized team
    Now Baker.

    • akryan says:

Only thing I want to say here (because you brought up that CB that hit his girlfriend): we should never have taken DGB because he has a history of domestic violence. I don’t care how talented he is. He busted into his girlfriend’s house and then dragged her out of the bathroom and down the stairs. Then we try to get him immediate eligibility. That is shameful. OU shouldn’t have even answered a call from a guy like that. Overall, Stoops has run a pretty clean program but this is something that I really have a problem with.

      • Boom says:

Let it go akryan. He’s here and doing well along with Mixon. Wonder how you feel if DGB continues to do really well and gets interviewed in the pros and says, OU/Stoops took me in and provided leadership and turned my life around. I owe everything to the OU program. Wonder what you will say then.

        • hOUligan says:

Not to wallop a dead horse, wasn’t a fan of the take and agree with DGB not gaining immediate eligibility. It’s past. Now just want what you said. He stays low, plays great next year and gives kudos to C Bob and OU for giving him the chance and helping him turn his life around.

      • Tulsa Terry says:

It was actually his girlfriends friends apartment. If your girlfriend was awol at a strange apartment would you be cool as a cucumber? He never struck anyone, he pushed aside a girl advancing on him. Got HIS girlfriend and left. No charges filed.

        • Kelsta says:

So a girlfriends friends house is a strange apartment. You should be mad if your girlfriend is at a girlfriends apartment. It’s ok to go in someone else’ apartment if your possession (girlfriend) is in there. It’s ok to go in and get your girlfriend, as long as you leave after retrieval. Yep, that sounds totally reasonable.

I’m really not trying to rekindle this issue. I know some of us support the decision and some don’t. None of us really know what happened, unless you were there. But this post can’t go without a response.

  • Cedarsooner says:

I believe TT will release Mayfield after the OU/TT game. I just think that is the way they roll.

  • Scott says:

TTU makes mistake after mistake, biggest mistake they made was signing KK to a long term deal.

  • Andrew says:

unfortunately, the only one that is suffering is Baker Mayfield. They really need to adjust the rule for walk-ons.

  • Cush Creekmont says:

Tech from President to freshman student should be ashamed. I would always remember this – and when the next re-alignment comes along, tell whomever seeks OU that TT can’t come if they want us…

    • Zack says:

I think there’s no doubt ou could care less about tech. The only 2 I think they care to stay aligned with are osu and texas but I think there’s a quote out there from stoops saying we aren’t tied to any other school and that us leaving for the PAC 12 was very real however that was probably dependent on whether texas would go too.

      • JB says:

Boren will not allow the move without oSu. That is the reason Boren poo-pooed the SEC invitation. The Pac-12 also would not accept either oSu or TTU and absolutely would not go along with Texas or any other school having their own network. If Boren’s still around in 2025, I hope he’ll be willing to sever ties with oSu. We can always play them as an OOC opponent like we did with UT for so many years.

        • Sooner Ray says:

I have never understood Boren’s love affair with oSu, especially the way he expresses the importance in academic standards.

        • EasTex says:

It is more about the state legislature than it is Boren.
Vote out the Poke legislators and OU can have that appendage removed.

  • Drew says:

Once we get into garbage time, Stoops should have Trevor change jersey’s so he’s wearing Mayfield’s number, and continue to run the score up on them. Mayfield won’t be playing, but they’ll sure wish he was.

    • ND52 says:

I was thinking they could have Perine change into Mayfield’s Jersey once they start running the clock out on the worst run defense in america.

  • SoonerinLondon says:

What’s the over/under on TK runs this week? This season?

  • James D-Space says:

I can’t wait until we play these jokers. What their doing is so wrong and on so many levels…. I hope some of these kids that they are recruiting takes a hard look at this situation and it signals some “red flags”.
I have a feeling that when OU plays TTU, that it’s going to be very ugly. I’m talking Play Station on the easy level of absurdness.
Hang in there Baker, something tells me you WILL get the last laugh!
    BOOMER!!!

  • RBear says:

A new word/phrase should be coined for the slap we’re gonna put on Kliffy and Co.

    Ideas?

    • Zack says:

Gotta win it first it’s a tough place for us to play. West texas is like the Bermuda Triangle of land. But I hope we hang 60-70.

  • Buster Rhymes 4 says:

I call B.S.! Someone needs to depants pretty boy! Give him a swirlly or something. I vote for depanting! Loss of a year is @$&€#(¥)!!!!

  • JT says:

Where are all the Tech/Kingsbury apologists now?

  • JB says:

I wouldn’t have a problem with a coach blocking a scholarship player from gaining immediate eligibility. But Mayfield’s walk-on status along with his not receiving a scholarship changes the game for me. It simply is not right that a tuition-paying walk-on is being punished for going to another school on his own dime when he should be free to do as he chooses. If the roles were reversed and Bob blocked a walk-on’s transfer I’d be in the front row booing him for acting like a douche.

I keep hearing how “Kool” Kliff Dingleberry is…all I see is a guy who can’t coach worth a damn, makes poor hires, has an undisciplined football team, and can’t find or keep a decent QB. I realize TTU is a sub par academic institution (one of the few schools oSu can look down upon), so I suppose I shouldn’t be surprised their football program hired a substandard coach.

    • Sooner Ray says:

      Trolls showing up in 3,2,1……

      • JB says:

Bring’em on. Where did I say anything that wasn’t true? He has in fact run off 2 QBs, he has the most penalized team in the conference, he has ZERO quality wins, and he lies as a matter of habit (said Mayfield was offered a scholarship, said DC was under the influence, etc.). Check US News & World Report academic rankings…TTU and WVU are the only Big 12 schools ranked lower than oSu.

        • Sooner Ray says:

You speak the truth my friend, but they eat a different tumbleweed out there in West texsa. They don’t accept criticism well even if it is accurate. They love their queenberry.

      • Clint Lenard says:

They’re already showing up on the linked article above. TTU fans struggle to accept that their head coach is a shady douchebag whose biggest “achievement” in his coaching career is based on his appearance.

  • Shelby is a Patriot says:

Let’s just hang half a hundred on them, then.

  • ToatsMcGoats says:

This guy (Klingsberry) is making classic rookie mistakes. The problem is, “he isn’t making mistakes”. If you “don’t make mistakes” you don’t learn from them. Total dbaggery going on down there. I thought the fans were classless, the coach plays 2nd fiddle to NONE. The fact that they are still getting recruits (There’s still time, Fehoko) is astonishing to me. Kids must really love alternate uni’s and Ryan Gosling wannabe’s.

  • blaster1371 says:

Kingsbury kept saying this wasn’t personal …… Yeah sure.

  • akryan says:

That is crap that he can’t count this as a redshirt year. I didn’t know that. There are conflicting reports about just why he left, mainly concerning scholarship concerns. Whatever his reason for leaving, he should have been allowed to count this year as his redshirt year. I understand Kingsbury not giving a free transfer to a conference opponent. It’s spiteful not to let him redshirt though.

  • hOUligan says:

Don’t get the whole Lubbock thing. It’s a complete hole. And Kliffberry’s ‘kool’ will not get it done. The team is playing like krap. The shine will soon fade as Kliffberry keeps stepping in those west texass kowpies and the kids will go elsewhere, as will Kliffberry. He will be a memory as distant as the horizon. Karma.

  • soonermusic says:

This is too bad. Sure seems like there were issues between Mayfield and Kingsbury, what with the back and forth last year between the two true freshmen as starting qb. Obviously wasn’t handled very well.

I know there have been exceptions granted, and I thought the “no scholarship” thing might work, but clearly the rules are designed to discourage transfer. As far as I can tell they have been mostly concerned about the issue of D1 basketball players transferring.. I read at the beginning of the year that they seriously considered amending the rules to eliminate any and all exceptions to the “year in residence” requirement, and may still do so.

  • Soonerbred says:

just went to the kwtv site to look for a retraction on Dean’s story…nope, article is still there w/ the headline “Breaking: Mayfield immediately eligible.” SMH.

  • Brad Warren says:

Wtf was Dean Blevins reporting last week? What a clown.
