Open Post | Tuesday, Jan. 20th (UPDATE 2:56 pm)

Josh Wariboko: We had a chance to catch up with Josh Wariboko this past weekend. The more we speak to him, and those folks around him, it seems like this one really is a bit of a three way tie at this point and where he ends up is anyone’s guess.

By now everyone knows Wariboko is a big fan of the Cali life. He’s visited UCLA a couple times, including a brief unofficial in the summer and an official visit this past season. In our estimation, UCLA remains a strong contender. But in truth, UCLA isn’t USC. If Wariboko had a standing USC offer, they’d be hard to beat. Wariboko has friends at USC and it’s our understanding that he’s long had strong interest in the Trojans. So while UCLA gives him a chance to be in California, we are told it doesn’t have quite the same draw that USC would.

Wariboko spoke highly of Ohio State recently and, specifically, talked about how much he likes coach Urban Meyer. While we may have once thought Ohio State was just a placeholder, it’s clear that isn’t the case. At one point Wariboko said, “what is there to not like about Ohio State?”

Josh also talked about his overall comfort with Oklahoma after having spent so much time in Norman during his recruitment. In fact, he was at the Bedlam basketball this past weekend. He said he’s got an incredibly close relationship with Bill Bedenbaugh and Jerry Montgomery. He knows the players, the coaches, and his own family lives nearby. Oklahoma continues to remain an attractive option for Josh.

So, like we said, all three schools appear to be pretty even at the moment.

Du’Vonta Lampkin: A few weeks back we told you, “OU still has a shot at flipping Texas DL commit and former OU commit, Du’Vonta Lampkin (HERE and HERE).” We were expecting this to be a bit of a surprise flip on NSD but in talking to some folks close to the situation, we are told that an actual decommitment could come soon. At which point Lampkin would likey wait until Feb 4th to announce an official decision.

Texas Recruiting: Related to the note above, it’s interesting to note that Texas is really struggling right now with recruiting on the defensive side of the ball. If they do lose Lampkin to the Sooners, they’d be left with zero defensive tackles in this 2015 class.

Additionally, they lost Tim Irvin, their star Florida DB, to Auburn and we’ve been told that Da’Vante Davis may be wavering as well. We’ve also recently heard that Cameron Townsend may be re-thinking things.

In talking to some high schools coaches and trainers in Texas, there seems to be some very unhappy folks about how Charlie Strong has gone about recruiting…not reaching out to some of “the fellas”…passing up kids in Texas to recruit Florida…etc. Justified or not, that sentiment definitely exists. In fact, we talked to one coach who said, “now would be the right time for OU to really reassert themselves in Texas.”

– UPDATE (12:24 pm): New Sooners OC & RBs coach using this sweet ride to check in with 2015 JUCO WR Dominique Reed.

– UPDATE (1:42 pm): 2015 WR, OU target and recent visitor, Van Jefferson tells TFB that he has decommitted from Georgia. Sooners continue to pursue as we head down the home stretch to National Signing Day.

UPDATE (2:56 pm): I (K) have had a chance to chat a bit with OU WR target, Van Jefferson and at this point it seems pretty clear that OU is the leader. He did not say whether another visit will happen, but it almost feels like more of a “when” not “if” right now. It seems now is making sure the whole family is on board. We’ll keep you updated.

Can never have enough OL and DL, take em all Coach B and Coach M

  • Steve Cooke says:

Barton Scott seem to think Van Jefferson will switch from Georgia to OU.

  • Jeremy Phillips says:

So would we be in on Townsend or no?

  • BigJoeBrown says:

Maybe OU can get Wheeler to flip!

  • SoonerPhins says:

Have you heard on when the new coaches will be hired? I know they are trying to keep quiet, but something has to have been leaked

    • Chris White says:

TFB has said a couple times on here that Stoops is trying to wait until After NSD to do any more coaching changes.

      • SoonerPhins says:

Sorry I am not on here much at the moment (school and work). Must have missed it

      • SavageSoonerEsq says:

Does this make anyone else nervous? E.g. that it seems to be known to everyone (especially the recruits) that OU is going to ax some defensive coach after NSD. Would this not make you nervous if you were a recruit and knew that it was a possibility that OU might fire your position coach and/or recruiter?

        • Chris White says:

          not necissarily.
if the coaches are being honest, which they are, they would be clear with the recruit, letting them know that their position coach is going to be replaced, but it will e best for the team and program. TFB has also said that Stoops is making sure recruits would stay if he did do this

  • soonerinks says:

Texas is ripe for the plucking in recruiting. One of the reasons I liked the Lincoln Riley hire was because of his Texas connections. My understanding is that Cumbie has very good Texas high school connections and is very good at networking in Texas. He would be a great hire as WR coach if we could convince him that OU is the best place for him. I would like either the WR or DB coach to have strong Texas high school ties.

    • MoJoOkie says:

Cumbie has said if he can’t call the offense he isn’t interested. Riley will call the offense, so …

      • soonerinks says:

Agree, that ship has probably sailed. We do need another good coach with strong ties to TX high school coaches as that has really hurt us in the last 5-6 years in pulling the elite Texas athletes (Cale has done good though).

        • MoJoOkie says:

Yeah, I’m not sure why it’s taking so long on the WR and DB (assuming Viney isn’t elevated) hires. Texas is getting harder with a&m and TCU having recent success. But texas has historically had their way with the top kids, with the exception of a steal here and there. The thing about Texas is that there is so much talent that there should be plenty for everyone; just got to evaluate who you getting properly.

Saturday, September 17, 2016, on Owen Field:
    OU – W
    tOSU – L

    • kt-raida says:

That was a very anticlimactic post.

      • red clay says:

It’ll improve. Just the first version. Long range forecasting is vague, generalized. I’ll get more specific with smack talk and score prediction as it approaches. Oh, and mocking the ESPN talking heads will be great fun after we win. For a long time.

    • paganpink says:

Let’s call it 42-17 O.U, as our offense stamps “DONE” all over their little buckeye helmets and our defense doesn’t fall for cute little Urban Meyer trick plays from their offense, nor allow them to run at all.

  • Jason Vos says:

    Any updates on Darreyl Patterson?

  • Jason Vos says:

Safety Demarko Doodles from Douglass OK has a TCU offer. Is OU not looking at him?

TCU always evaluates DB’s very well, its no small thing to have a TCU offer.

    • soonerthunder says:

Usually TCU will recruit good athletes, no doubt, but they have known character issues sometimes that OU/UT knows about. That’s how TCU has to do to compete with UT and OU. OU and UT can be more picky when looking at athletes. I know several personal examples where this is true, OU showed zero interest in a great, great athlete for very good reasons, and TCU signed the athlete.

    • soonerthunder says:

BTW, in one instance, where OU showed zero interest and TCU signed the tremendous athlete, the athlete started as a true FR on D at TCU on a then top 5 ranked TCU. Was kicked off the team, is now in prison for a long, long time.

    • Jhwig says:

After apparently losing out on Nate Dalton and having two really solid safeties committed, I suspect that OU is all in on Justin Reid. I would also be curious to know if the TCU is still (was ever) legitimate.

  • Jason Vos says:

Another guy Riley Daniel from Ringling OK has a bunch of nice Big 12 offers. If OU misses on Wariboko, I hope they give him a look.

    • Jhwig says:

Jason, I do not think OU needs to collect bodies at this point. OU is probably at the “all or nothing” stage with just two elite guys (Wariboko and Teuhema) and not even thinking about anyone else.

    • oumike23 says:

I know they are at least familiar with him. I was at a scrimmage back in the spring the week before the spring game, and he was in attendance talking with Bedenbaugh. He looked like a big ole country boy.

  • Brian says:

Would love to see a post predicting how we close out the class – 6-7 spots left, right?

    • Soonerfandave84 says:

If OU gets Jefferson, Lampkin, Townsend, and Wariboko OU would then have the #8 class(247 class calculator) if all things stayed the same for others(they wont)

      • soonerthunder says:

I’m not overconcerned with recruiting rankings, but when I do look at them, I’m more concerned with average. Do you have any idea where we’d be when you look at the average player recruited?

        • Soonerfandave84 says:

89.06 is in the top 15, but i didnt see exactly where probably 13ish

        • D Hunter Sanchez says:

I do the same. Before the Overton problem OU had the 8th highest per star average according to Rivals. It’s at 3.53 now with the exclusion of Overton. Top ten class so far according to average. Significant increase from the last two years: 3.2/3.1

  • Indy_sooner says:

Side note, people have been railing on competition for talent in Tx from UT, Baylors and TCUs. Seems like we’ve done just fine, even plucking players from their backyard. Not bad especially for a down year.

  • D'Brickashaw Ferguson says:

Any chance Malik Jefferson “may be re-thinking things”?

  • lovethemsooners says:

Wariboko talking about how much he likes Urban Meyer makes me want to throw up.

    • Rene Goupillaud says:

Young men haven’t developed the ability to evaluate an adult. Meyer acts like a kid most of the time, even fist pumping on tOSU’s last meaningless TD. Meyer is a good coach, but I doubt many other coaches like him.

      • Jed says:

He’s a flesh golem/sociopath who has no idea what it feels like to be a human being, so he tries to fake it. Watch him on the sidelines. He watches others to see what the proper response to a stimulus is; then he does it, too. It’s both fascinating and sickening at once.
In primitive times he would have been burned at the stake.

    • James D-Space says:

      Not a fan….

  • D'Brickashaw Ferguson says:

OU has plenty of competition to fill the “vacuum” left by Texas. TAMU, Baylor, other SEC schools, TCU, etc.

I’m optimistic in our chances with Monty, Coach B, and Gundy

  • JY says:

I hope that the new coaches take a page out of Monty, B’s and Gundy’s playbook to recruit 8 days a week.

    • soonerthunder says:

I think it’s hard to scheme well against teams and recruit well. It takes hours and hours and hours to scheme well against teams. You can’t be side-tracked constantly by calls, IMO. It takes a tremendous amount of time to build relationships with literally hundreds of athletes and their parents. I’m not sure anyone can do both equally well.

      • Jim says:

While I understand your opinion, I disagree. IMO, that’s why these guys get paid hundreds of thousands a year; to work their asses off. It’s also why these guys have assistants; to help with the calls/text/tweets/etc. If they establish efficient ways to delegate duties, it shouldn’t be too difficult. Very time consuming, sure, but not overwhelming.

      • jmac45 says:

I get your point thunder, but I also disagree. While it probably did take Josh H. years to put together a hodgepodge plan each week, a basic Air Raid offense is normally installed in 3 days. Repetition for the rest of the time. Of course, each week will bring a few tweaks.

But, no coach should be hired that can’t recruit. I mean, it’s just part of what they do. JMO

    • AmaGoh7 says:

This. OU has every reason to be a recruiting super power every year.

      • Indy_sooner says:

Very well on our way there, IMHO…

      • Doobie74OU says:

You add a young energetic guy with possibly a NFL background to coach the DB’s and another to coach WR this staff WILL BE A RECRUITING SUPER POWER AGAIN! Already on our way!

      • Jdizzle says:

Except for subpar talent in its own backyard (and some of that talent wants to get out of Oklahoma). I can’t fault a kid for going to UCLA over OU, especially if you grew up in OKC. LA is awesome, and Westwood is even better than LA! But OU should be a little better than where they are now.

        • Pokerman says:

Everybody’s different, I guess. I wouldn’t live in LA if you paid me.

          • D Hunter Sanchez says:

I live in LA, a native. You have to worry about getting shot, the girls are not the type you take home to mama, and people will lie to your face. Other than that, I can see why a recruit from a smaller town would like to come out here.

          • OkieRandolph says:

Yeeeeyep. Got many relatives in the LA area. USED to go visit them. But I hate it out there so much, haven’t been in about 10 years now. It’s worse than ridiculous, it’s S T U P I D ! But that’s me. And an 18 year old kid see movies, pro’s, and all the hype about how great it is, and they think they wanna go there. And some folks do go and actually like that craziness. But, I still say, recruit the area kids that have worshiped OU from the womb, and you’ll get guys that will fight their butts off to win at all costs and you’ll have less grade problems, attitudes, and kids transferring cause they can’t handle NOT being the stud on campus like they were in high school.

          • D Hunter Sanchez says:

True. Next year ESPN is going to build up USC and clearly it is surprising that they don’t compete every year seeing that they have a clear recruiting advantage over most other schools. But OU will rise back up next year. 11-1…hopefully 12-0 like 99.’

          • AmaGoh7 says:

Coach Switzer said something to the effect of as the head coach at USC you pass more D1 recruits on your drive to work than is in the entire state of OK.

          • D Hunter Sanchez says:

That’s right. I remember the King had great respect for USC. I hate them. But he beat them as OC 33-20, tied as HC 7-7, and lost 28-24, and 12-0. 1-2-1. We won’t talk about the game that never was under Stoops.

          • Rene Goupillaud says:

The LA area has 3 times the population of the State of Oklahoma. Hundreds of D1 prospects, enough to support the entire PAC 12.

I’ve lived in the LA area 37 years, lived in Westwood when I went to UCLA for my MBA. It’s pretty nice. Those badmouthing the choice of UCLA or USC are being foolish, just like Californians who think there’s nothing good about Oklahoma.

The advantages LA had 40 years ago have declined. Major corporations left LA in the 90’s as the State’s business climate worsened. Opportunities for great careers were plentiful in the 80’s, not so much now.

A decent government policy could re-ignite the engine of growth, but not likely for another decade or more. Sad because there is no place like SoCal.

          • SoonerSpock says:

Unfortunately area kids that worshipped OU from the womb will not provide an adequate number of top talent kids to compete for the CFP’s on an annual basis and that is what OU fans expect.

            and the threat of earthquakes…….

    • SoonerFan11 says:

Their influence to all our coaches recruiting strats should be applauded. Proud of the efforts of those coaches.

  • Sam Philbeck says:

Scoop predicted OU to land Smith, Patterson, Wariboko, Daniels, Neal, & McGinnis. FWIW

    • Brian says:

Add Jefferson to that list and call it a day!

    • Zack says:

      They also predicted dalton fwiw

      • Brian says:

Well they would have been right if OU hadn’t turned Dalton down…

        • Zack says:

Sorry I haven’t seen where he tried to commit. It would appear we either backed off because of Reid or he wants to play corner and we want him at safety.

          • Brian says:

            Backed off/turned down/no spot – All the same thing…The kid was OU’s to lose…

          • Zack says:

Well sometimes these kids need to commit on the spot if OU is where they want to go. Look at dalton wood. I understand the recruiting process for these kids is exciting. But if the school you want to play for offers I don’t understand waiting.

          • Jhwig says:

The antithesis of Dalton Wood (one offer from dream school…commits almost immediately) is Jalin Barnett. Barnett overplayed his hand in the recruiting process, did not progress as a football player and ultimately ended up at a school that was not where he wanted to go (not even in his top 2).

      • Sam Philbeck says:

Yeah that’s why I take these things with a grain of salt when reading them. 247sports has OU pretty low with a few of those recruits that Scoop thinks OU will get.

      • Jhwig says:

Sorry…I’m not sure I ever saw Scoop making a prediction regarding Dalton to OU. Not that it matters…all these boards/sites can’t be 100%

    • AmaGoh7 says:

Would be an awesome close – throw in Lampkin and Jefferson. (:

    • hOUligan says:

Has anybody worked the numbers recently? Sitting on 20 commits. Thought is there will be at least a couple of transfers. Could take 26 or 27?

      • Patrick Rice says:

I believe 28 is the max number. Normal 2015 scholarships was 19, but we had 3 early enrollees that can be used against last year’s numbers and 6 combined transfers/dismissals/NFL declarations. I could be wrong on how the early enrollees are allotted though.

  • BigJoeBrown says:

The one area that just get’s me is linebackers. We hear news from DB’s, OL, DL’s and pretty much every area other than linebackers. We have an amazing recruit in Deberry, but then silence and not even a faint whisper just silence. The thing that get’s me is you know BS is aware, you see an effort across the board but this one vital part of the defense is being swept under the rug. Maybe I am just looking into things to much.

    • D Hunter Sanchez says:

I feel the same way. All we get is crickets. Need at least one more in this class. The only thing it can be is that like QB, they think they have enough LB’s on the roster. The alternative is no one else wants to come here and that is unacceptable.

    • SoonerfanTU says:

No reason to go chasing “backups” at this point. I don’t know the count, but they went after several LB’s that they liked. Most thought/think OU lead for at least 2-3 of them. Losing Wheeler hurt. But had we ended up with say, DeBerry/Wheeler/Daniels, or McGinnis in place of one, something like that, it won’t look so bad.

I still think Kish is gone, and they want to let the new coach next year chase some more highly ranked kids, not have his numbers limited b/c we went after a couple of mediocre prospects late. We should be fine at LB next year. It’s going forward where our numbers will be an issue.

    • Jhwig says:

DeBerry, Smith and McGinnis would be a very solid LB haul. With the latter two still being possibilities, you may get your wish!

    • Jonathan Taylor says:

I’d like to see them look more in-state for LB. We have talent in-state this year and next. Plus I think that while we are looking out of state we’re missing some good players at home that are picking TU and OSU. Not saying they’re ALL good, just saying we need to look inwardly a little more. More kids we get from this region the harder they’ll play for pride. Less quite which we’ve slowly been seeing more of in the last few years.

    • D'Brickashaw Ferguson says:

Wouldn’t that rule out Kansas State? Because they’re “Kansas State University”, not “University of Kansas State.”

      Right guys…?

I realize these are kids but they sure do love there 15 minutes of fame that recruiting provides. Wariboko takes the cake, commits to us a year ago, de commits, really wants to play with his brother but isnt sure, falls in love with California and on and on

  • trusoonerA53 says:

Question? Could Shawn Jefferson have an impact on Murray? How does aTm wr class look or who is thier Co and qb coach? b/c we are still in waiting on our qb coach.

  • trusoonerA53 says:

Question? Wasn’t thier a tweet about Demarkus Lodge following Riley? Lodge does’nt like a hard commit. Just asking

    • SoonerfanTU says:

I’m still holding out hope we can land both Murray and Lodge. Maybe the chances are slim, but I think we do have a shot.

    • Jhwig says:

Lodge is not currently committed to any school. Decommitted from A&M. I see Murray and Lodge being a package deal. With Murray set on A&M, Lodge does not seem possible. Also, the lack of visits by our coaching staff to see Lodge and our pressing the Newsome issue makes the Lodge possibility even less.

Exactly…just look at how well his son runs routes

          • Jed says:

I noticed that. Not a surprise with a pro/pro-coach dad, but still nice to see.

          • hOUligan says:

FWIW 247 gives him a ’10’ in route running. Agree. nfl WR Shawn Jefferson as OUr WR coach. I’m IN!!

          • SoonerfanTU says:

So you’d take any and every WR coach in the NFL?

          • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Yes. The league is about big dollars. They can’t afford to carry a coach that is not up to the task.

          • SoonerfanTU says:

That is crazy talk. Bad/average coaches get recycled in the NFL all the time.

I have nothing against this guy. And if Bob wants him, fine. I just get the feeling it’s not going to play out like that. Time will tell however.

          • D Hunter Sanchez says:

I get your reservations. But what’s a bad coach? Just because a WR coach gets recycled does not mean he is not a good coach. There are other issues involved. NFL coaches have learned at the highest level.

          • Jeremy Phillips says:

No, but I’ve read up in his background.. Played for like 12 years & has coached for about 10.. Still fairly young.. From Florida.. I think he meets a lot of check marks..

          • Zack says:

Over who though? I would say yes because it helps in recruiting. Jay norvell has made a living off saying “yeah I coached Reggie Wayne and Marvin Harrison”

          • Indy_sooner says:

Kid is the #13 WR in the country and an Army All american, I would take him period, lol.
That being said, his dad has done 2 stints in the NFL as a WR coach, not bad at all for a hire

          • J.K. Abbott says:

why? Have you seen him coach?

        • Jordan Esco says:

No worries whatsoever, I was just clarifying 🙂

      • Zack says:

Jordan so I take it he reached out to you guys before he sent the tweet? If so you gotta like OUr chances right.

  • SoonerPhins says:

A Chevy? Shouldn’t they be driving a (puts sunglasses on) Lincoln? YEEEAAAHHH

    • Sooner Ray says:

      I like it!

    • hOUligan says:

Son, you know you’re gonna drive me to drinkin’ if you don’t stop drivin’ that hot rod Lincoln. VvvvroooOUOUOUoooooommmmm

      • Thomas Lenard says:

Someone was asking the other day about nicknames for OUr offense…..This gave me the idea of ” Hot Rod Lincoln – O”

        • Jonathan Taylor says:

I still like the Land Run. Lol. Gotta think of something for the Air Raid though…hmm…The Scorched Earth Land Run!

        • hOUligan says:

Little lengthy but I like it. INE, a nickname for Riley, “Hot Rod”.

  • curt gomer says:

Boy if that Jefferson decommit means hes gonna flip to OU that gives us an even better shot at Josh Smith

  • Katyboomer says:

You think since Van’s dad is a coach and understands the game that CBS let them know who our next WR coach is and that changed things for Van? ( One can only hope)

  • Nate Broadus says:

Texas’ head coaching position has always been a glad-hand position — that is why Mack was so successful.

Charlie Strong is not a bad coach. He might even be a good coach. Texas just doesn’t seem like the right place for him. He is not the politician/salesman that a school like Texas covets. We all like to think that maybe things need to change — that said, in many ways the glad-handing is just how college football functions. I don’t believe that ever will change.

Head coaches have to schmooze. That is a part of the job, anywhere, any time (and more so at a university with football tradition). You have to schmooze with the university brass. You have to schmooze with donors and regents. You have to establish relationships with coaches within the state. You have to sell, sell, sell — yourself, your team and your university, on all levels.

Bless the guy, he just seems to lack in some good old fashioned charisma. That and he doesn’t appear at all suited to the culture of Texas.

In short, his ego isn’t big enough for that state.

    • Jed says:

My Div 3 coach had a good take on this. He was arguably good enough that he could have moved ‘up’. But he didn’t want to. As he put it, if he kept the program reasonably free of scandal and within budget, then he got a full professor’s pay, he got to live in a beautiful little college town with all the benefits of access to a campus and he got to coach, which he loved doing, all without an ounce of B.S.
He was a pretty squared away guy for an old school Pollack.

    • BloodRed says:

I think there is some wishful thinking there. Part of the problem is some texas highschool coaches. Charlie not goin to pally up to people who don’t think much of him, neither would I. Saban had to deal with idiots at Bama who had “settled in” into a way of doing buisness there. It took over a year but he righted the ship once he found him a QB. Then he decided to continue hitting Louisiana and other states. Bama H.S. coaches were not happy but Saban is an Alpha male and U are going to deal with him his way. He wins BiG, Guys like that you allow some leeway, would have been different if he were not winning titles. Strong will be fine as long as he fines him a steady QB…He is not a texan so he is not going to do it their way but he has to start winning big! Or he will be held accountable!

      • Nate Broadus says:

He WILL be held accountable, yes. There is no maybe about it, he’ll have to win and soon.

The situations with Nick Saban and Charlie Strong are not all that similar, however. For one, Nick could get away with trying an “Alpha male” mentality — because he had already won a national championship in the SEC before ever taking the reins at Bama. Also, in just his second year, he raided the national recruiting scene, mercilessly. They had the #1 recruiting class of ’08, which included the guy almost everyone in the Sooner fanbase coveted: Julio Jones.

Following Nick Saban’s first year, they had a Top 10 recruiting class.

If you want to portray a big dog persona, you have to bring in big dog results. That’s just how it’s done.

So far, Charlie Strong hasn’t brought in the results to back up any measure of bravado — on the field, or in the recruiting game. This could change, of course. Nothing is set in stone. Right now, he’s not there — and I’m skeptical that he will get there anytime soon.

The culture clashes between Strong and Texas are highly visible, and only big time results will change anything.

Is there a boom coming soon? Good job breaking the story.

    • Defend Colfax says:

      Hatchback definitely.

      • EasTex says:

The last few years of the GM full sized station wagon.
        Wish they still made them.
My 95 had the detuned Corvette LT1 V8. Sucker would run like a scalded dog.

    • EasTex says:

      I had two of those, a 93 and a 95.
Loved them both, but had a soft spot for the 93, it had the Police package…HD cooling for the engine, tranny and oil, with silicone hoses. Sold it with 99,000 miles on it and it never needed a front end alignment.

      • paganpink says:

Hah! Amazingly comfortable ride and all the room in the world inside with big old school bench seats. Land yachts. Maybe they stash them all over the country and then fly their G4 or Citation in to the little airports and drive to folk’s houses!

        • EasTex says:

Drove like a luxury car and would haul the house.
On long trips I would fold down all the rear seats and create a concert hall for the custom sound system.
          Made me comfortable and happy.

        • Jed says:

Most general aviation airports have a couple of loaners available.

          • paganpink says:

            That may be exactly right.

          • Jed says:

Least they can do when they know you’re going to be buying $1,000 in gas….

          • paganpink says:

Isn’t that the truth. They used to let me fill up my Ford Lightning with 100 no lead at the Clarence Page airport in Yukon. It’s supposed to be av gas only, but decided as long as they attached a spark arrestor to my trucks frame they would fill her up. Expensive, but still cheaper then buying race fuel in 5 gallon containers and mixing it with regular 91 octane! Aircraft have no choice!

      • Jed says:

Hah! I drove an ’81 Caprice. 454 engine with a 4 barrel carb. No bueno mileage, but the sob would damn near patch when passing on the highway.

Jordan tell them to add some red fuzzy dice to that caprice and it’d be dope

  • Jason Vos says:

who is this Mike Hughes guy?

    • JD says:

athlete out of NC that Riley recruited from EC..looks like a legit wr for bubble screens and quick slants

      • Jeremy Phillips says:

his film is awesome… equal parts Mark Clayton, Jalen Saunders, Ryan Broyles and Sterling Shepherd..

      • BloodRed says:

Not a big fan of Bubble screens. Small wr, are not as good with physical corners in their face…I hope this will not be case. Now If they look like Keyshawn out there ala 200 yard games in the rose bowl that is different. You cannot put a circle in a square peg…

        • JD says:

Go watch this guys film the way he weaves thru traffic as an option qb is ideal for the type of way he would be used..bubbles screens and quick slants…there are techniques to keep the big dbs off..this guy will excel in the air raid

          • BloodRed says:

Just watched It, kid is pretty good, fluid in motion, he looks like he could do some damage in space…Hope we get em’

      • OkieRandolph says:

Well, when he was running in the wildcat formation and ran 50 yds for the TD, he DID turn the wrong way faking to the fullback. (chill dudes, it’s a joke) Also, this is his Soph highlights. Does anyone know he’s been hurt since then or who else is recruiting him?

        • JD says:

He’s committed to UNC and was an early enrollee but has held off on that with the recent events…Riley was recruiting him for EC

  • kjt89 says:

Did… did Kish get this done??

  • Michael Darling says:

Check out 0:51 in the Jefferson vid. He has about 10 yards of separation coming out of his break. What a great route runner!!! So excited to (hopefully) have this kid.

  • Sam Sherwood says:

Has there been any consideration or chatter of Lincoln Riley or Bob Stoops hiring Shawn Jefferson (Van’s father) for the WR Coach vacancy?

    • Jeremy Phillips says:

      I’ve been banging that drum! but I don’t count…

      • Sam Sherwood says:

I can think of worse things than having an NFL veteran WR actually coaching Wide Receivers. As opposed to a Linebacker/DB coaching them… like Jay Norvell.

    • oumike23 says:

I figured if it were him, they would have already announced it. I figure it is a coach at a current college and out of respect for his current situation, they didn’t want that school to lose commits right before signing day.

  • Jeff says:

Shocked about the Jefferson commit, he is a good player and if OU gets him with out a WR coach in place then that is great

  • Malicong says:

Since most of us trust D Warren, he is now projecting Josh Smith to flip to Oregon. Hopefully this can be changed. IMO Smith is the most important recruit on the board right now.

  • Super Keith says:

Can we all agree that if Riley can’t recruit with Montgomery then the next best guy to go with is Gundy?! Hopefully Gundy will train Riley in his legendary recruiting ways.

  • Clint Lenard says:

Jefferson looks a lot like Dez Bryant in that film. Would be a huge get.

    • SoonerinLondon says:

His film reminds me of a guy named Stills.

    • OkieRandolph says:

You ruined the moment with that comment.

    • BloodRed says:

Looking like Dez and playing like Dez are 2 entirely different things altogether…I could go down the street right now and find you some 6-2 dude that look like Dez but I put money down right now they won’t play like him….Let’s not get ahead of ourselves now..We got 4 freshman wr . who were all-american or all-state yet not one of them except the cali kid had a catch.

  • BoomerDave says:

Don’t be shocked if the name of Keenan McCardell surfaces as a WR Coach candidate. That’s what I just heard from a somewhat reliable OU source.

    • hOUligan says:

There aren’t many ‘bad’ weeks to be a Sooner and most weeks ARE great. Thank you Coach Jerry!!!

    • OUknowitscomin says:

Decoding might imply there will be 2 commits next week. Filling in the word.

  • James D-Space says:

    Awesome news on Jefferson…..
Still need a WR coach. Wonder Dad thought of OU during Van’s visit? Didn’t happen to leave a resume did he?
    BOOMER!!!

  • Borba22 says:

Not sure if addressed in the comments below, but have you guys heard anything on the Van Jefferson/Ole Miss front? Read a coupe places on twitter that Ole Miss actually leads for Jefferson and could pull the trigger with them on his visit to Oxford this weekend.

  • EasTex says:

No upgrade in vehicle or IMO recruit. Not a fan of “No Hands” Newsome.
    https://twitter.com/OU_CoachGundy/status/557697170472992768/photo/1

  • blaster1371 says:

If it comes down to Jefferson or Newsome I’d prefer Jefferson. OU needs those guys that with bigger wing spans and can catch anything withing ten of them.

    • Zack says:

Someone said that Jefferson reminded them of stills frame and ability. I would take him in a heart beat

      • SoonerinLondon says:

That was me. I recognize that Jefferson may not have Stills’ top-end speed, but he just looks like Stills to me…the way he carries himself on the field, his frame, his stature, his glide and his propensity to get open.

Would be great if he had Stills’ pride. Would be greater if he liked going over the middle more than Stills did.

Would also help if he had a QB with LJ’s passing skills to get him the ball.

    • Sooner Ray says:

Just watched some more Jefferson film…..we need him in a bad way, if for no other reason, he’s already been coached up good.

      • EasTex says:

His first moves on DBs were decisive and sudden.
        Me likee.

      • JD says:

Runs real crisp routes…the better the routes the slower the top speed needs to be…and he still has decent speed and covers ground with his height

    • EasTex says:

      I’m witchu!

    • Don Carmichael says:

Agreed. We have several receivers with good straight-line speed already. We could really use a bigger receiver that makes sharp cuts, runs great routes, and can catch.

  • JJSoona says:

So how does DJ Ward fit into the defense this next year. Everyone seemed crazy about him last year.

    • blaster1371 says:

If he is still in the 250 range I’d say OLB. Of course, that would depend on whether or not he has the skill set for that position. Just seems a little small to play DE in the 3-4.

    • Hotrod33 says:

It depends on what we run. At this point I couldn’t even tell ya what we are going to do. With JM being Co-DC he might have some ideas to help get the best players where they need to be. I don’t think MS knew where to put who and we got outcoached most of the time. I guess we will see (maybe) during spring practices and spring game.

    • EasTex says:

He seemed to be used on 3rd and long in their “NASCAR” defense with 4 DL, mostly.

  • Hotrod33 says:

I’m starting to get a good feel on this recruiting class. I think with LR coming in and hitting the ground running, I think we will be ok in the future. Assuming that these kids can play.
You would think as bad as the season was we wouldn’t do as good as we thought. Maybe these coaches are selling them that they can come in a compete and possibly start if they work hard. I’m just ready for NSD to get here so we can start speculating who might start from this class.

  • Jake says:

So what’s the consensus on what the secondary depth chart will look like?
Sanchez and Thomas at corner or will someone move in there?
    Parker at FS
    Byrd at SS?

    • D Hunter Sanchez says:

tell you what, if J. Thomas misses any tackles in Spring he goes to the bench.

      • Jake says:

Need to have them on some tackling drills for sure!

      • SoonerinLondon says:

Simple solution to the tackling problems, as far as I’m concerned. Simply do what Pete Carroll did.

Seattle trained with rugby players, who coach tackling at the waste instead of high or low. They are extremely disciplined at it and, as we all see, they don’t miss many tackles.

    • Sooner Ray says:

Sanchez and Parker yes….everything else is open for competition as far as I’m concerned.

      • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Agree with you brother. Thomas on the bubble screens/one on one tackling against Clemson was a disgrace.

      • JD says:

I put both corner spots open with a new coach coming in

        • Sooner Ray says:

          Wouldn’t hurt anything.

        • D Hunter Sanchez says:

You think Sanchez is not a starter? He had a good first half and decent second half right?

          • JD says:

I think Sanchez needs to feel like his spot is up for grabs

          • DCinAZ says:

            Okay. Based on what though?

          • JD says:

Based on the terrible pass D we had…I’ll blame the coaches but you still have to clear up that area of the D and Sanchez was inconsistent.. getting beat some especially later in the year when we played better competition…I’ll give him a pass for missed tackles on the short passes after his shoulder injury…and he’s def the fav to have a spot but we need shut down corners and if somebody else is better then the spot should be theirs..that’s just how it should be if we want the best D we can have…I’m pulling for him but he needs to work and earn it

          • DCinAZ says:

I didn’t see Sanchez get beat a lot later in the year. I saw our safeties get torched later in the year and the other CB, but not Sanchez.

          • JD says:

Well I’m not going to argue with you so I’ll not waste either of our times on the subject but I see it different than you

        • DCinAZ says:

          Why? Sanchez did his job.

          • JD says:

            He can do better

          • DCinAZ says:

I’m sure he will. All of them can do better but I don’t get the consensus among some of the fanbase that Sanchez isn’t very good. That’s not what I see.

          • JD says:

I hope he does…I hope you aren’t implying that I said he wasn’t any good because I didn’t…I’m just saying he should have to earn his spot moving forward…he gets caught looking in the backfield too often and gets beat deep..am I wrong…that’s a fixable problem

          • DCinAZ says:

Wasn’t implying that you said anything like that. I was just asking a question generally about the opinion some have on Sanchez and why they feel that way. Curiosity……..not arguing.

          • blaster1371 says:

He’s good but he’s isn’t the shizzle some make him out to be.

          • blaster1371 says:

With you on this. He ain’t no Colvin, not even a shadow of him.

          • boomersooner says:

i’m picking up what you’re putting down. personally, i think he’s somewhere between how jd and dc see him. so if jd sees him as a 4/5 and dc sees him as an 8/8.5 i could see him somewhere in the 7/7.5 range with the chance to be a 9. he’s got talent, loads of it, he needs to stop being his biggest fan, he needs to stop looking in the backfield(as i think jd said), he’s GOT TO wrap up or he’ll keep messing that shoulder up and looking dumb for yet another guy bouncing off while he cheers his own hit. there’s more but off the top of my head those are what i can think of and easily fixable. makes it exciting that maybe he hears it from a different voice and something lands to make him the best i think he can be

          • JD says:

LOL you make it sound like I think Sanchez sucks giving him a 45 lol…I like Sanchez..all I’m saying is HOPEFULLY we get better play at the cb position whether it be Sanchez or somebody else…we had 117th pass D…That is unacceptable..totally unacceptable! Hopefully the new cb coach doesn’t look at the past depth chart when picking his starters and actually coaches up and gets the two best out on the field…No doubt that Sanchez was our best option last year but we need his last years play to be our weakest of the two spots next year at the least…The guys need to step up their game…117!!!! They need to write that on their lockers and not forget it

          • DCinAZ says:

I see what you’re saying but that 117th ranking you’re talking about, IMO, falls more on the shoulders of our safeties and whomever the CB opposite Sanchez is. Sanchez shows up ready to play every Saturday from what I’ve seen. He’ll improve his skills, as he has been doing already, and he’ll be a great one by the time he leaves here.

          • BleedCrimson says:

I agree, Sanchez made a huge step between the previous year and this past year. He played injured something like the last half of the season. Definitely needs to change his approach on tackling. The big hit is ok, but needs to get a wrap up.

          • JD says:

I hope so because it was inconsistent this last year…we need a corner to have one side of the field locked down…Sanchez didn’t have that last year…he was good and our best but other teams still went to his side of the field…I guess I just want to have the best defense we can have…hopefully in year three Sanchez will get that respect and be lock down…last year he wasn’t

          • boomersooner says:

haha. i should have said my scale wasn’t to scale. i wasn’t meaning that you thought he sucked, just trying to help myself find a positive sounding middle ground and not sound like switzerland. i brought up yesterday that it seems like you almost need 2 richard sherman’s and 9 kam chancellor’s to have any sort of d in our conference. it sounds silly but its freaking difficult to play d in this conference week in and week out. i think sanchez can be awesome and hopefully this new coach has the voice or experience or whatever it ends up taking to get fully through to him and bring out his inner sherman

          • JD says:

The best I can remember playing against these offenses was the 08 tech game (might have been 07 season). They came to town ranked #2 and we completely shut them out…Mike should review that game to get some ideas

          • boomersooner says:

good idea. and then when a different team/coordinator has variations you can match up your variations with the different caveats etc etc. hopefully that makes as much sense to you as it does clanging in my head

          • boomersooner says:

although i’m sure that’s just normal d coordinator stuff and means i’m not really saying much. man, i’d hate to be a d coordinator in this conference

          • DCinAZ says:

He’s a completely different CB than Colvin. Sanchez is more aggressive than Colvin ever was. Not saying he’s better…..but he’s more aggressive.

          • Boomer4life says:

            Besides Perine …….who couldn’t?

          • JD says:

Perine is one of the few I’d lock in

          • Sooner Ray says:

            Shep’s alright when not hurt.

          • JD says:

Yeah I don’t think he’ll have trouble keeping his spot..he’s in the same situation as Sanchez (new coach and all) but seriously when has Shep had a bad game…I can’t really think of one

          • Sooner Ray says:

He’s solid, seldom makes a mistake.

          • MoJoOkie says:

            So can we all.

          • JD says:

            Not me…I’m maxed out

          • Lane Gilstrap says:

He could tackle for crap and got burned just as many times as he picked people off. He’s good, but not great.

          • DCinAZ says:

His tackling improved this year over last year and he got torched in the WVU game with a bum shoulder by a guy who’s gonna play on Sundays and also torched Alabama’s DBs. Beyond that…..I don’t recall Sanchez getting torched much. I DO recall him shutting down Lockett all by himself so bad they had to move Lockett to Wilson’s side just to free him up. Nobody else was able to do that to Lockett.

        • Dustin says:

Sanchez’s name is written in pen at the top of the depth chart

          • JD says:

Are you the new cb coach…I hope he wins it but if somebody is better then they need to be in there..we had the 117th ranked pass d…if that was our team ranking the whole staff would be gutted

          • Dustin says:

Feel free to enlighten me as to who is better than Sanchez. Which CB is going to suddenly unseat a guy with 26 starts, 21 PBU and 8 INTs? I’m not saying he’s amazing or a future NFL stud, but he’s obviously the best we have.

          • JD says:

I’m not at practice to see..I’m just saying hopefully we get better play out of the cb position..whether it be Sanchez or one of the other young guys. He started as a redfresh so it’s not impossible for a young guy to come in and be better…I’d take half the INTS he got if it meant half the TDs he gave up since your throwing stats out there

          • Dustin says:

How many TDs did he give up?

          • JD says:

go look for yourself…too many..the pass D was 117th…117th!!! Hell he gave up two or three in the sugar bowl alone

          • DCinAZ says:

Kinda what I’m thinking. LOL……Outside of the WVU game, I don’t recall Sanchez giving up much of anything all year and his tackling was solid every game after that game. He pwned Lockett all by himself.

          • MoJoOkie says:

I think the weakness was on the other side. And the 117th you keep citing is on the team, not just Sanchez. If I have anything to really fault him for, it would be he needs some time in the weight room. His tackling isn’t all world, but there’s a lot worse on the field than him. Correct the safety play and the other corner and I’m good.

          • Jake says:

I hope they have someone better.
Or I at least hope he gets better. OU had some serious issues back there. Need something to change for sure.

          • DCinAZ says:

            Permanent marker.

          • Daddy R says:

            Stamped. lol

          • DCinAZ says:

            Branding iron. LOL

          • Dustin says:

            Triple stamped. No erasees.

          • Boomer4life says:

            Tattooed

      • Boomer4life says:

Agreed! This was a learning season Sanchez. Think he has a break out senior year!

    • EasTex says:

I’ll wait and see what one P.J. Mbanasor has to say about it.

    • Hotrod33 says:

All positions on both sides need to be open. No one should have a guaranteed spot. They need to earn it and keep it every week. If they can’t the next best player needs to be in there.

    • blaster1371 says:

I watched a few no-huddle replay games on soonertv this weekend. I’ve got this to say about Sanchez— he couldn’t carry Colvin’s jock strap. He has a lot of work to put in to get better. His thoughts of going pro after next season needs some serious reevaluation. Tackling is an issue, run support could get better; bigger recievers can push him around. He is certainly a ball hawk but he isn’t quite the lock down cover guy some think he is.

      • Sooner Ray says:

He is a good college corner. He would get smoked in the pros with the double move and the more physical receivers. He is awesome on the short routes picking off balls. His technique used for tackling is what got him hurt. I like him a lot but he needs to work hard and not assume he can’t lose his spot.

    • Doobie74OU says:

Nobody can answer this till SOMEBODY decides how we are going to play our DBs. It was a combo of playing a ton of ten yards off zone schemes and don’t get beat deep and very little press coverage. But assuming Bod Stoops was talking about the whole team ( I think in his end of the year presser) when he said he wanted to get back to dictating to the other team instead of being so reactionary as a team then that would suggest more man coverage and if so everything could change cause the DBs have different strengths. I do believe Sanchez and Parker find their way on the feild but it will be open I predict! JMO

  • JJSoona says:

Don’t look now but K State is giving Iowa State all they want @ Iowa Sate.

  • JJSoona says:

Speculation question for you guys smarter than me………..ok everyone:-) If we get one or two good surprises down the stretch up to and including NSD, what could those be?
Seems like every year we snag one or two we didn’t expect.

  • EasTex says:

Quick OT before I have dinner.
The first episode of the final season of Justified is on at 9CDT on FX.
Will he actually make it out of Harlan alive?

    • Sooner Ray says:

Only if he has a solid move off the line to beat the press and can out run the deep safety.

      • EasTex says:

I’d like his chances better if he didn’t carry a Glock. :-0

        • Sooner Ray says:

Yep, Desert Eagle is the good bet.

          • EasTex says:

Good choice, but not for strutting around.
Ought to go with the S&W M&P in .45ACP.
Shortest trigger reset in modern single actions.

          • Sooner Ray says:

My boss carries the M&P, I’m partial to my XD 40. I would like to shoot them side by side to see if I notice any difference.

          • EasTex says:

If you put it in your hand be sure and ask which palm insert is in it. They come in S/M/L.

          • Sooner Ray says:

I have so many hand guns, all different shapes and sizes, I’ve learned to adapt to whatever is in my hand. lol.

          • EasTex says:

My oldest brother(former QB) has smaller hands, when picked one up with the M insert he fell in love and bought it instantly.
Aced his CHL qualifying after having only put 50 rounds through it.

          • OkieRandolph says:

HILARIOUS !!! We go from talking LB’s, QB’s and WR’s to Desert Eagles!!! Now that’s a BOOM! I was just wondering. . . .If a recruit is on his official visit and Gundy lets him drive the ’91 station wagon, is that an illegal inducment?

          • Sooner Ray says:

Only if they lose a hub cap.

          • Kody K. says:

I’ve had my fair share of handguns. I enjoy shooting my Wilson Combat 1911 the best……so accurate.

          • Boomer4life says:

I have one of those. Pretty powerful peace maker.

          • Sooner Ray says:

It’s about all you want without a shoulder stock. 🙂

          • Boomer4life says:

First couple of shots at the range everybody stopped shooting to see where all the noise was coming from.

        • paganpink says:

I’ve got a 9MM Glock, AND a .50 Desert Eagle which I can’t hit Jack $hit with. The DE sprays so much unburned powder you can’t stand directly next to someone firing it, LOL. It looks amazing at night of course. It is so loud it makes 44 mags sound like a 22, and I have to tell them at the range what I’m shooting or they think I’ve had a misfire.

          • EasTex says:

The only problem I have found with the DE in .50AE is it beats the crap out of the lips on the magazines.

          • paganpink says:

I guess I can’t afford to shoot it enough to make that happen! The Israeli’s were the first ones to be confident they could control all that force I suppose, but it has to be beating up the frame as well. But it’s fun.

          • Boomer4life says:

            Sooooo……much fun!

          • EasTex says:

It sounds like a spiking hammer hitting a rail when that slide locks after chambering a round.

          • Sooner Ray says:

Why are you taking shots at Jack $hit? Did he pi$$ you off? 🙂

        • CKill1 says:

I used to carry a G30. But I grew up and now only carry 1911s. Just sent a Commander off to Lou Biondo of Business End Customs for a go-through. Can’t wait to get it back

        • MoJoOkie says:

I like my Glock. Buncha elitists! But I carry a Sig. The G21 is a little on the bulky side unless you’re into trench coats.

          • EasTex says:

Lots of folks like their Glocks. There are many, many reasons I don’t like them, not the least being that they have issued numerous model recalls that they refer to as “upgrades” over the years and don’t let anyone know. The owner has to find out about it themselves.
            http://www.thegunzone.com/glock/problems.html

          • MoJoOkie says:

Eh, mine’s been reworked anyway, but I’ve never had a problem with it. A little heavy with a full clip but that’s about it.

          • EasTex says:

            Clip?
            /clips are not magazines

          • MoJoOkie says:

Heh, not to weapons elitists, but to an old Okie they are. The art of communication is being understood.

Edit: “This is my riffle, this is my gun. This one’s for fighting, this one’s for fun.” I still call them guns. Poor attitude I guess.

          • EasTex says:

To this old vet there is a clear difference. You call for a mag, you get a magazine, hopefully loaded. Call for a clip, you get a stripper clip and have to load the mag yourself.

          • MoJoOkie says:

Welp then I was right. No one has loaded my clips for me in decades. lol

          • EasTex says:

There is a distinction, Clips Are Not Magazines…unless you own a Marlin rifle.
            http://thegunzone.com/clips-mags.html

          • MoJoOkie says:

Heh, you’re retired military aren’t you? But just to ease your mind, magazine. There I said it, er typed. I was 11B20 Automatic Rifleman. Can’t remember if I called them clips or magazines, but I’m pretty sure I got what I needed.

          • EasTex says:

Not retired, just a vet of the Great Asian Vacation.
The important thing is to know which end of the tube the little pointy things come out of. 🙂

          • MoJoOkie says:

Police action eh? Nothin’ to it. Yeah and don’t catch your thumb in that sliding bolt thing. 8>)

          • EasTex says:

            Ha!
Nothing like standing on a tarmac in Saigon with rockets and mortar rounds flying in.

          • MoJoOkie says:

1975ish? I was 68-69, so I must be much younger than you.

          • EasTex says:

I’m 64 and getting better every danged day!

          • MoJoOkie says:

Well I’ve got a few on you, but you’re right it just keeps getting better. Thank you for your service. Justified was good, poor old Dewy. I’ll miss Ava the most; something about the ones with a little bit of a rough edge.

          • EasTex says:

            Thanks to you too, bruh.
Dewey was the first official casualty of the original cast. I’m betting there will be many more of them before this season is done.

          • MoJoOkie says:

Yeah, kind of like “Sons of Anarchy” if you watched that one. Almost killed of the entire cast. “Americans” is another good one; but their all winding down. Need Spring to get here so I can get to my chores.

          • EasTex says:

I watched SoA out of morbid curiosity to see which murderous miscreant would get murdered next. 🙂
Love the Americans, I remember the tension with the commies during the early Reagan years.
After about May, I turn off all but the basics on my cable bill until the end of August.

      • Wilson says:

especially considering they play by college rules and are allowed to be physical beyond 5 yards…

    • Easton says:

No. He’ll go down shooting. Looking forward to this season.

    • MoJoOkie says:

Sadness. Hate to see it end. Sip a little apple pie and watch the final frames.

  • soonerborn says:

I would like to see Cody Wheeler of Allen get an OU offer. The guy can play OG or OC. To me he is ever bit as good as Bobby Evans. Just as strong. I see he just committed to Ttech .

  • Tyler says:

Are we recruiting Mike Hughes? Saw on LandThieves someone said we are. He’s currently committed to North Carolina, but his film is absolutely ridiculous! He’s at the top of my list just from watching the first 2 minutes of it.

  • bmrsnr says:

Walker 4.67, Wade 4.8, Tapper 4.56 (40 times)…Any way we can get more aggressive with the down lineman in a 3-4 scheme?

Move to a 1 gap 3-4 from the 2 gap and unleash the hounds.

  • EasTex says:

    Wait…whuh?

    @OU_CoachGundy @OU_Football @TheKylerMurray is committing to the #Sooners!!!!— Jeremy Soulek (@jeremysoulek) January 21, 2015

  • SoonerSpock says:

247Sports list the performance of their 2014 5* recruits. They had 33 players make the list. Six redshirted the other 27 were all productive in 2014. Many were team stars. For certain it illustrates why the emphasis exist to recruit 5*/4* athletes instead of area athlete that would die to play for the Sooners and be totally committed but not rated nearly so high.

It appears at this time that there is not a bust among the 33 unless that would be Joe Mixon as a result of the personal problems he has faced. And I suspect he will be more than just a contributor for the Sooners in 2015.

    http://247sports.com/Article/247Sports-Recruiting-Rankings-2014-Class-Leonard-Fournette-34866627

    • SoonerOracle737 says:

Sure. But the trouble is that there are only so many of the 5 & 4 star players to go around. I would love to take all that we can get, but there is tremendous competition out there for their services. We will sometimes have to supplement with diamonds in the rough and I’m good with that. Just as long as we get our share of the 5’s and 4’s.

    • MoJoOkie says:

Some of that could be attributed to the environment. If you are perceived to be a highly rated HS player, you will probably go to a very good college program; where you will be surrounded by other very good athletes. Which would enhance the opportunity for success.

  • Carl Carter says:

Any news on John Houston? I have been hearing a little buzz about him?
