Jenks Sooners Pick Up Long Awaited Commitment From 2014 In-State Star

Image via usatodayhss.com

While it might not have taken place within the timeframe many an OU fan would have preferred, Tuesday afternoon the Sooners picked up the long awaited commitment from 2014 Jenks safety Steven Parker.

Even though it was expected, it’s still significant for Oklahoma both because Parker is an incredibly talented safety and just as importantly because you never want to see top talent leave the state.

Bob and Mike Stoops made Parker a priority from Day One and on Tuesday, their efforts were rewarded.

No, but his dentures did fall out.

YESSIR!! #1 priority recruit in this class IMO

    • Sooner Ray

Could this mean he knows Frison is in the bag?

  • Jive Turkey
    • Sooner Ray

      AAAAWESOME!

  • BD

Great news! What position do you guys think he’ll end up playing at OU? And is he versatile enough to possibly work him out at multiple positions depending on our depth / current needs?

    • Jordan Esco

100% safety. Mike Stoops is going to have a lot of fun w/ this kid.

      • dahldennsull

Yeah, Mike enjoys when his safeties can cover receivers (look at the bama game when Hayes got burned), while also blurring the lines between FS and SS (run game played by both) so having a big kid like this, that knows how to play corner, but is solid in the run game, will be perfect for what MS wants to do. Pair him with Byrd or even Sunderland in a few years… and goodness

        • http://www.TheFootballBrainiacs.com/ JY

          Good Lawd!

      • http://www.TheFootballBrainiacs.com/ JY

Nail meet head. Jordan’s right on here. A guy who can cover and hit like Steven is a huge get and need in Mike’s scheme. Guy is a huge safety.

        • Indy_sooner

Watched his All star game. Kid was lights out and downright lays the wood in his blocks in addition to having a knack to break down plays. Seeing him play like that against very good competition did it for me and it was no surprise he shot up 60 spots in the rankings right afterwards. He does not have an off switch.

          • http://www.TheFootballBrainiacs.com/ JY

As he matures, he’ll develop that killer instinct. Mike is an ace in cultivating that.

  • OUTIGER

    Great news.

  • Adrian

Best part of that highlight vid is seeing the push and athleticism of Marquise Overton

  • ccmosaic

    Boom!

I can’t say how much I love these kids doing so much for OU before they’ve ever even played a game! I have high hopes for these kids in the future. Only time will tell but this could be a very special class.

  • Sonny Schovanec
    • Sooner Ray

      Yes, raise your glass!

  • Leroy Jenkins

Can’t believe he almost commited to Okie Lite. Huge props to our coaching staff, this is awesome news.

    • Sooner Ray

Hope their hard work pays off tomorrow on the other dudes!

    • Indy_sooner

I think his parents went to OSU while his granddad played for OU, so it wouldn’t be far-fetched to think it. I was surprised OSU wasn’t pushing for him hard.

      • Leroy Jenkins

Forgot about his dad playing at OSU. Thanks for reminding me and glad he’s a Sooner

  • Big Higg

Hopefully tomorrow closes with a strong class! Definitely excited about Parker! Gotta keep the okies in state!!

    • http://www.TheFootballBrainiacs.com/ JY

I’m a big fan of Parker. I’m hoping we get Clark tomorrow with Frison and Quick!

      • OklaSooner

Any set times for their announcements?

        • http://www.TheFootballBrainiacs.com/ JY

Frison’s early in the day. Not sure on Quick

  • Borba22

    Bob Przybylo ‏@BPrzybylo 47m
    Up next for #Sooners? @lancerpride75 (8:30 am), @ClarkBoy_2 (2 pm), @ItsQuicker (5:30). All expected to be #SigningDay decisions

    All times CT.

    • Jordan Esco

Everyone is going to need to pace themselves tomorrow. Gonna be an all-day affair.

      • Sooner Ray

Nothing but light beer before noon, promise!

        • Sooner_Ace

          I make no such promises!!!!

          • Gary Robbins

Me neither! If MIxon was in the Army he would be a full bird Colonel. The young man has the ability to lead and recruit prospects. Now he has a main man(Parker) to help get Quick, Frison,, Clark and keep Garnett. I really like the way all OU 2014 commits seem to be saying Team is not spelled with an I in it.. How about a big rabbit out of the hat. Say Patrick Au!. Go Sooners.

        • Sonny Schovanec

          Red in the AM.

      • j l

work from home day tomorrow! lol

  • Jon Cline

    Good deal. Welcome Mr Parker!!

  • James D-Space

    Great News… Boomer!!!

  • Indy_sooner

Parker is a legitimate game changer who just so happens to be an Okie. The dude is a stud at safety in every way possible. Very, Very good pickup for us.

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TDUvqXK4DEM DCinAZ

Exceeeellent…..nice work Brainiacs team! You were all over this one the whole time.

    • http://www.TheFootballBrainiacs.com/ JY

Come on now. Everyone knows we poach our stuff from other sites! Seriously thanks!

      • KellyB

In that case you’re not charging us enough :-)

        • Sooner Ray

I’m not paying another dime for this crap! :-)

          • http://www.TheFootballBrainiacs.com/ JY

yeah we were thinking of doubling the price of zero!

  • CyberSooner

I feel a sick day fixin to happen tomorrow….

  • pitbull17

Awesome news! I’ve seen video on this kid before, but never that video. The open field tackles at :45 seconds and 3:45 are some kind of impressive. This kid could see some time early.

    • Sooner Ray

Our kids go to school with him, you should see him in person!

      • pitbull17

yeah video gives you an idea, seeing a kid in person really shows you more. Especially when you can see them compete in person. Seeing Bradford and Gerald McCoy was awesome on TV. Seeing them play a game live, in person you could really appreciate just how special they were.

  • Fear The Magic

Thomas, Byrd and now Parker. Gotta love our kiddie corp safetys

    • http://www.TheFootballBrainiacs.com/ JY

The sheer size of these guys can’t be understated. They’re all like old Venables linebackers. With the scheme that Mike plays with both safeties, you don’t tip your hand to the offense since there isn’t a true free or strong safety!

      • Fear The Magic

True. With the size they’re bringing cant help but think we’ll be stronger against the run at the very least. Parkers supposed to be a good cover safety as well from what I hear.

        • Sooner Ray

He is a good cover safety because he has outstanding speed, he needs a little more weight on his long frame (in my opinion) to be a sledge hammer that we want to see on the field. OU will develop his body in a hurry.

          • Fear The Magic

            enter smitty

        • http://www.TheFootballBrainiacs.com/ JY

With what Mike and Monty are doing with that front, I doubt we’ll need much run support from the secondary like we have in years past. This year’s d is gonna be filthy. Come on down Charles Walker and Devante Bond!

          • KellyB

Can you imagine an offense scheming against Striker, Bond, Tapper, Dom, Sanchez, Walker, Phillips….man that’s just nasty

          • http://www.TheFootballBrainiacs.com/ JY

What’s nuts Kelly is that all year long people were able to tilt their protection to Striker. With Bond off the edge on the other side, they can’t do it. Then if you want to get filthy in long yardage, put Bolton and Bond on the edges and blitz striker from the nickel spot. With Tapp, Geneo and Phillips that’s just not fair.

          • Sooner Ray

Looks like someone needs to polish up on some defensive warfare stuff in the off season! You’re gonna be busy.

  • EasTex
  • Borba22

Courtney Garnett just posted on twitter that he just got done talking to coach Stoops, then tweeted that he will in fact sign tomorrow. Still between OU and ND.

    • Sooner Ray

Come on momma, work your magic!

    • Cory Reedy

      We’re getting Garnett. Period.

      • http://www.TheFootballBrainiacs.com/ JY

        Love the ‘tude!

    • Kdubracing

If that dude flips it will be pretty ridiculous. Why commit like a week before signing day and then flip. I know it’s a major life choice but come on. Just don’t commit if you aren’t sure this late.

    • SoonerfanTU

Gotta think that tweet is good for OU.

I love this class. I think in 2-3 years we’ll look back on this class like we did some of Bob’s earlier classes. Gonna be some studs, and a LOT of contributors.

  • Drew T

Saw this man play against union and it seemed like he was on every play. Huge pickup for us!

    • Sooner Ray

Absolutely. He has the speed to show up anywhere and the frame to hold more weight which OU will take care of.

  • http://www.TheFootballBrainiacs.com/ JY

If we can Close with Quick, Clark and Frison, it’ll be huge! Follow with a gigantic season next year and we’re rollin!

    • Sooner Ray

If we finish out this class and close on our ’15 targets…….WOW!

      • http://www.TheFootballBrainiacs.com/ JY

15 class will be big too. Already in the fold are two very good d-linemen in Lampkin and Overton, with Wariboko and Bobby Evans on the O line. If we can close some elite talent at Linebacker it will be sweet.

    • JJsooner1

JY I just love your passion for our Sooners. Thanks for all you do to keep us informed:-)

      • http://www.TheFootballBrainiacs.com/ JY

No problem man! Love some Sooner Football!

  • Rob Turner

    Great call Brainiacs!!!

    • http://www.TheFootballBrainiacs.com/ JY

Big props to K on this one. He was all over it!

  • Ed Cotter

Now that’s what I’m talking about. Welcome to Sooner Nation SP! Love seeing Mixon working on getting guys to roll with the Sooners! BOOMER!!

  • Cory Reedy

I honestly believe we are getting Garnett, Quick, and Frison. MAN…what a HUGE close on a great class. IF, we somehow get Clark as well…I’ll be speechless.

    • http://www.TheFootballBrainiacs.com/ JY

What’s nuts Cory is that when you look down the list of commitments, the talent is there probably moreso top to bottom than any class in recent memory. A lot of guys are underrated due to conditioning at camps, under the radar or what have you, but some noteable underrated guys in my opinion…
      1. Orso
      2. Curtis
      3. Mead
      4. Meier
      5. Paul
      6. Garnett
      7. Alvarez
      8. Bolton
      9. Bond
      10. Windham
Just addressed needs at every position, and man, these next few years are gonna be fun! Bob is Back!

      • Cory Reedy

Now how do I get out of work tomorrow….hmmmm : )

        • http://www.TheFootballBrainiacs.com/ JY

If you figure it out let me know!

        • Doobie74OU

Best time of the year to be self-employed and sitting in front of a computer screen! :-)

      • Cory Reedy

and even Perine IMO. I saw on a site today they had him as a FB and a 3-star. The guy can be a big-pounding tailback (the thunder to Mixon’s lightning if you will) and he was dominant in big-boy, big-class Texas high school football in a tough division. I mean, when Saban is knocking on the door, you’re pretty special.

        • Sooner Ray

I’ve had a good feeling about that kid since he first committed. I think in 3 or 4 years we are going to be appreciating his contribution.

          • KellyB

I’m going out on a limb but I believe Perine can have the same type of impact that Millard had. I bet Heupel’s mouth is watering about what he can do with him

          • Sooner Ray

After watching some of his film a while back, that’s the comparison I was making even though he was not actually playing full back. Stud of an athlete!

        • http://www.TheFootballBrainiacs.com/ JY

Perine’s a sledgehammer. Ford is already one, and Ross is lightning. You could run three backs a formation and dice up defenses with misdirections, screens and power.

          • Sooner Ray

Should be no reason for anyone to get winded with this backfield. We should group them and have a constant rotation to demolish opposing D’s

          • http://www.TheFootballBrainiacs.com/ JY

Punishing would be a good word for it.

      • Indy_sooner

Great list, just about sums it up, JY. I read a great story about OU (Coach B) not quitting on Curtis even after all his camp issues (link below). The guy has apparently been working out with his trainer and getting himself in shape.

This is the epitome of an very underrated class and I cannot imagine how these guys will turn out with the excellent development and nutrition in place. The team cohesion is unlike anything we have seen in a while

        http://footballrecruiting.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=1596007

        • http://www.TheFootballBrainiacs.com/ JY

The talent is there for sure. Natrell was a four star by a lot of accounts as was Joseph Paul. With Coach Tiff keeping the nutrition right and Bedenbaugh getting them going, man oh man. Gonna be some beasts!

      • JSam

Man, I am a huge fan of Bolton’s attitude, nastiness and work ethic. Partially due to the work the FB have put in with their evaluations, I am pumped about this class. Doesn’t seem like the “stars” of the class have any entitled air about them. That is huge in developing chemistry. The upper classmen can bring them in and teach them the ropes with pride and be ready to pass the baton.

Ready for word out of spring practices about who is making strides. The coaches have some toys they haven’t even taken off the shelf, yet, and they’re restocking!

        • http://www.TheFootballBrainiacs.com/ JY

Bolton’s most underrated attribute is his motor. Kid got like six or seven sacks in an allstar game against Cali’s best. He’s an absolute animal.

  • http://www.TheFootballBrainiacs.com/ JY

Going out on a limb and gonna be optimistic. I think we get Quick, Frison and Clark. We need em all!

    • Sooner Ray

Mixon and Parker are working their butts off on Quick, If we don’t get him it just wasn’t gonna happen.

      • http://www.TheFootballBrainiacs.com/ JY

Lots of positive vibes right now about all three…

  • Rob Turner

The best part about tomorrow will be reading Coach Stoops tweet BOOM!!!!

  • Shelby is a Patriot

    Made my day! Awesome news!

    • Sooner Ray

      Get rested up for tomorrow!

  • Dave Wilkins

Somebody should hook up a similar pic for Garnett. He seemed pretty interested about it on J.M.s twitter…. https://twitter.com/Joe_MainMixon/status/430922786240880642/photo/1
