A Quick Update On Samaje Perine & Joe Mixon

Image via Tulsa World

Just wanted to pass along a quick couple of updates after speaking to some sources over the weekend.

First, we’ve been told that Samaje Perine’s injury is his ankle and that the x-rays came back negative. We’d heard speculation elsewhere that some believed he may have suffered a broken bone, possibly in his foot, but based on what we’ve been told that does not appear to be the case. It’s still much too soon to make any kind of determination as to his availability for the bowl game, as with any high ankle sprain it’s simply a matter of how quickly one can recover and/or tolerate the pain.

Second, some of you are aware based on the comments made over the weekend but for those who are/were not, there was a Joe Mixon rumor that made the rounds yesterday. No real point in getting into the specifics, what little of those there were, but the gist of things was that he either was no longer or will no longer — depending on which version of the rumor you were privy to at the time — be a part of the program. Generally, we’re not big on addressing rumors but given the subject of said rumor and that you, our readers, clearly wanted an answer, we decided to go ahead and ask around. We were told, in short, the rumor was ‘b.s.’ So there’s that.

Hopefully that settles things, at least for now, but if you have any other questions just let us know and we’ll continue to do our best to get you answers.

Glad to know Nixon is staying. As much as we have to lean on our running game due to the lack of passing, we will need all the good RBs as possible next year.

  • Swanny says:

Mixon was at the game. Saw tons of people taking pics with him. He seemed excited to be there and was really courteous.

  • D'Brickashaw Ferguson says:

K, any specific updates regarding recruits from this weekend? I thought the o-line was very impressive (Teuhema, Wariboko, Barnett, & Uriquidez…take note)

And glad Perine’s x-rays were negative. He would be huge for the bowl game…as well as Cody Thomas passing downfield effectively, and better secondary alignment.

Also glad the Mixon report is BS. I’m still a believer he’ll bounce back in a big way next season

  • Bam says:

To leave now would be foolish. Sit another year? And clearly the team needs playmakers.

  • Indy_sooner says:

Please rest the optimus. No real use in him aggravating that foot in the way Shep has. Everybody in the country knows what he’s capable of

  • hOUligan says:

Seems Mixon would have already left if he was going to and there were tweets early that he was determined to come back from all of this. Next month he will begin working with the team in winter conditioning and then in spring drills so he’s just about served his time. Seriously need to just rest Samaje and not risk further damage in this loser of a bowl. Ford and Ross can carry the load and get Brooks and Sooner Dave some carries for all their efforts.

  • Greg sparks says:

    But can he (Mixon) throw?

  • Jed says:

There’s a weird psychology that kicks in when people are frustrated and down that makes them want things to be worse than they actually are. Expect more rumors to get started during this off season. (Perine has been dead for two weeks but Bob is withholding the news! All the recruits are going to USC! OU cancels football a la UAB, Owen field reserved for soccer! Horsepigs to become the University’s logo! Bob to retire, Josh to HC!)

    • hemisooner says:

Better yet, knight is just as good as johnny football. Our secondary will be fantastic and will put fear into offensive coordinators. We will have an identity on both sides of the ball.

    • tfb_fortyseven says:

Josh admitted to hospital for chronic polyphagia Christmas evening will miss bowl game; Bob admits it’s all his fault as he also admits he’s been throwing games since the 2003 Big12 CG; Mike checks himself into a 12-step program in Arizona; pictures surface of Norvell walking out of an OKC gentlemen’s club with Trey Metoyer … i think i could have fun if someone were to start a thread like this.

      • Jed says:

Wow. Metoyer in a gentlemen’s club is one horrifying concept. Then again, it might work like Ritalin to ADHD kids: counter intuitive, but effective.

        • tfb_fortyseven says:

The only thing that is missing from the coaching staff is some kind of scandal … oh well. If Bob doesn’t make changes my posts are going to get worse, and everyone will despise me – at least on this board – for my intuitive yet creative negativity. Gawd, yes, Norvell and Metoyer in a GC?!! Are you Effin kidding me?!! Hahahahaha!!! That is so insane it is funny.

  • HoustonChiver says:

Guess I missed the Mixon rumor, which is good. I hope he stays, we need as many people out there with pass catching ability as possible!

    • boomersooner says:

Yeah. Hopefully its a blessing in disguise. We got awesome rbs so we could just line him up anywhere and everywhere and tell him to get open

  • dallassooner says:

Any report on if the OSU TE is still running uncovered at Owen Field this morning?

    • hemisooner says:

      Lmao

    • SoonerSouthoftheRed says:

      Genius.

    • paganpink says:

Eric, honey, do you want some Cheesy Poofs?

    • Jordan Esco says:

      Checked w/ a source and…….yes, he is.

    • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Funny, but sad. I’ve watched the tape over and over. Yep, wife is at a conference. Twice the Stoolwater TE is lined up tight right. We have a LB who is looking at the read option, the TE releases and runs right past the LB and curls over the middle. Now my freakin question is 1. Who is responsible if it’s man coverage? If not man, who is not reacting to the spot the TE catches the pass in? 3rd is the LB responsible for the read option QB, plus the RB, AND THE TE In this scheme? If so, it sucks.

  • dallassooner says:

On a serious note; will Mixon be cleared second semester to take part in work outs and spring ball? I’m hoping so. But not sure how his punishment was written up.

    • Stephen says:

I believe it was a season long suspension…so once the bowl is over he is able to work out with the team. I could be wrong on this, though.

      • Cary Newman says:

You are correct. He can start in the spring.

        • OohRah Mama says:

On a similar sidenote…Does Mayfield’s ineligibility extend through the same period? If KK burned down a full year for the kid, does his playtime get to start with a post-regular season bowl or in the spring?

  • disqus_uj44WuVjt2 says:

I hope these Dumb a** coaches don’t push to get Samaje back on the field before he’s ready. The bowl game means absolutely nothing but I am sure the Stoops brothers will come up with some mish-mash game plan. If it works, them we are back to square one and all is forgiven. Just like last year. I hope that we fall on our face again, it’s what these coaches deserve!

    • OohRah Mama says:

At no time in my fifty-year span as a fan have I ever – ever – wished my team to fall on its face & lose.

  • Wilson says:

hope it is not the dreaded ‘high ankle sprain’ those are just as troublesome for RBs as Groins are for WRs. Both are very contrary injuries…

  • connie usa says:

I hope that I’m wrong, BUT I’d be shocked if Mixon stays. I look at it this way; when a RB has the pedigree like Mixon does, he truly believes that he’s going to be a pro. Does he want to either split reps with Perine, or be the “back-up”? A back like Mixon wants ALL the carries, just like Gordon at Wisconsin gets.

    • Boom says:

No single RB carries the ball 100% of the time in college or pros. It’s about packages and who is the best fit for that package. Currently Perine is the best at what he does but it would also be good to have more backs that could cause DC’s nightmares. If Mixon went anywhere to be the one, he would be going to a lower division.

    • brainpimp says:

Totally different styles. Good chance both get in the game same time. It would be stupid for him to leave now, he would lose and additional year of eligibility.

      Thanks for playing though.

  • Billy says:

I doubt we see Perine in the bowel game. Just have a feeling. I kind of hope we don’t and let him fully recover for next year.

I really think Mixon should stay. I don’t think it will really hurt his NFL chances. I have a hard time believing that if both were NFL bound, they would end up leaving in the same year. If Mixon can’t earn some reps at OU, he isn’t going to go to the NFL anyway. The NFL is pretty cut-throat with backs, so the competition would be a good learning experience.

  • Ryan says:

Guys, Mixon is like Murray out of the backfield. That is an incredibly potent threat to have on your offense. A funning back with that kind of receiving ability. He will play a ton.

  • EasTex says:

I hope Perine’s ankle heals completely and if that means missing his first bowl game it’s fine with me. Don’t know if Ford’s bone fracture or turf toe are what side lined him this past week, but sure hope he is good to go in three weeks.

I like what our current backs bring to the game. Ford and Perine are the most complete as runners, receivers and blockers. Ross is a threat to score at any time, but needs to be utilized differently than the first two to be effective.

The many high school videos of Mixon I have watched present him as a fast, determined, and violent RB with good hands. We don’t know yet how he is with ball security or blocking. He is behind in his S&C and other skills, but he is young and talented, shouldn’t take him long to get back to playing shape.

Just finished watching the recording of Katy-Manvel. Rodney Anderson is a fantastic back. For his size(6’1″ 205) he is extremely flexible, elusive, fast, powerful and patient. He reminds me of Demarco in the way he looks physically, but is more like Tony Dorsett in the way he can slither, slip and slide through holes and past defenders, all the while getting his pads very, very low and does all of this at warp speed. I do believe that Anderson needs to work on his upper body strength, ball security and really needs to work on his blocking.
Anderson is #26 in the white jersey, He had an 80 TD run off tackle, but the 72 yd TD run he makes at about 2:40 is indescribable.

..rest ford, perine……….play ross, brooks, smith, rip, flowers

  • Won says:

Honestly, I am so disappointed with and lack confidence in our coaching that I don’t really think it matters who we have out there at this point. You can have all the parts to make something, but it’s gotta be put together in a good manner to achieve success.
