Trevor Knight Officially Cleared To Return

Image via collegefootball.ap.org

Via their official Twitter account, OU Football announced Saturday morning that quarterback Trevor Knight has been officially cleared and was practicing with the team as they start their bowl prep.

It’s certainly welcome news for the team, but even more so for Knight whose career some had prematurely speculated could have been in jeopardy. Now whether this means he’ll be the starter against Clemson there really is no way to know. Odds are, barring any potential setbacks and/or re-aggravation of the injury, that could certainly be the case. But the coaches will clearly use these next couple weeks to determine if Knight will be ready to go and if he gives them the best chance to win.

Regardless of whether or not he’s under center come Dec. 29th, it’s just good to see him back out there healthy and with his teammates.

I’m on here, before all the sarcasm starts, to say: good for you TK and best of luck.

  • Travis Coyle says:

Thats grew news. Glad to have him back and healthy.

  • Ryan says:

What happens if Knight starts and plays like he did in the Sugar Bowl again? The last thing we need is over hype for next season AGAIN. For him and the team. I still think Mayfield will win the job anyways.

    • Zack says:

You’re asking about over hype…yet you brought up mayfield. I don’t think it’s fair to expect mayfield to be the next heisman qb at ou.

      • D Hunter Sanchez says:

No. But Knight has what 14 TD passes and 13 INTERCEPTIONS!. OU deserves better than that. Mayfield threw the ball around in his stint at TT. Knight. Mayfield Hansen and Thomas we need the most consistent passer.

        • Zack says:

Mayfield had 12 tds and 9 int’s. Not a whole lot better and was in a very pass happy offense. And most know that mayfield played during the soft part of techs schedule last year.

          • D Hunter Sanchez says:

I know Zach, this is true. But OU has better weapons and a running game. Mayfield was a freshman.

    • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Hype is good, seeing that preseason rankings affect the committee. How can it not? It’ll be nice if OU can play well and get a victory. Would you rather be ranked top 15 or 25th or lower going in? As for the QB position, may the best man win. Stoops talks about Thomas passing so well, Knight is 13 int’s, Hansen we don’t know about. I think Mayfield has something they call the “it” factor. But stop with the freakin turnovers.

      • Rick Stansel says:

Knights actual statistics for this year: 14 TD passes, 9 INTs, 134.3 efficiency rating, completion percentage of 58.1%, and 2,197 yards passing. 66 rushes for 405 yards or 6.1 YPC and 5 rushing TDs.

        • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Thanks for that. So, 23 TD’s 14 Interceptions over a two year career. Like I said whoever plays needs to stop with int and fumbles.

    • SoonerfanTU says:

I don’t think it will matter. If, during the offseason, it is evident that Mayfield throws a better, more accurate ball, and that he reads the defenses well enough, I think he starts next year. If not, it’ll likely be TK again.

    • pomodisqus says:

You think a stellar OU QB performance in the bowl game versus Clemson is a bad thing…? “Hype”, otherwise known as optimism, helps recruiting… I’m not sure I get your point…

  • Zack says:

This is good news I hope there’s is a very low chance of re-aggravating that injury. I would like to see him play but not at the expense of possibly becoming paralyzed.

  • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Let’s go TK. Don’t rush the passes, and please know where the LB is! Glad to have you back.

  • brian says:

This is huge. Finally, we get some good news.

    • D Hunter Sanchez says:

I took the fact that Petty graduates and Hill of OSU got kicked off the team as good news.

  • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Hey look JH is coaching up the QB’s!

  • Steve Johns says:

Glad that TK has been cleared to play. My question is will he be given the green light by coaches to run. Waiting now for the status of Perine, Shep and Shead.

    • D Hunter Sanchez says:

I hope they learned their lesson. You either let the man play using all his abilities and let the chips fall or play scared which leads to injuries. Knight was injured twice this year, once on a late hit the refs missed and by a pile on by Baylor which was also questionable. Flukes?

      • Steve Johns says:

The Baylor hit was a cheap shot that should’ve resulted in the player being ejected. Agree with you if TK cannot run the entire offense, he shouldn’t play.

        • Pokerman says:

I tend to agree but, using that logic, Heupel shouldn’t coach.

          • Steve Johns says:

Point was if he can’t run (take hits), he shouldn’t be on the field. IMO Josh has been running on a small playbook all year – for various reasons.

  • ratman says:

Good news hope Shep gets healthy too!

  • diablodejalisco says:

Good news for TK but i am not certain they will turn him loose and let him run, and clemson will know that too.

    • SoonerfanTU says:

Who cares? Feed Perine, and throw the ball around some. We can win doing that. Don’t have to have a QB run game.

      • D Hunter Sanchez says:

That’s right. Play action works in the NFL. Bell and one WR just have to be better than the coverage. The question is do we have a wr that can beat coverage other than Shepard? Where’s Mead? Smallwood? Neal, Quick, we’re calling these guys out to get separation, make a difference. These bowl games have tons of viewers and scouts from the league. Let’s go OU.

  • blaster1371 says:

I don’t think the discussion of his injury being career ending was premature at all. Most of can read pretty well and the injury as it was diagnosed tends to be career ending.

If he is cleared to play then I cannot imagine him not starting against Clemson. However, I can see the QB run game evaporating except for the scramble like plays we saw earlier in the year.

  • thedeez says:

$20 says he has another monster bowl game, giving us more unreasonable hope for the future.

    • SoonerPhins says:

He is still only a sophomore. Who is to say he won’t be better by next year?

    • D Hunter Sanchez says:

It’s not unreasonable even if they get beat. Look, the offense averaged 36 points a game. The reason that translated to four losses was because of the defense!

      • JB says:

The pick 6 at TCU cost us that game

        • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Not doubt that turned the game. However, the defense allowed 30 points. Unacceptable. The worst thing was even with that int, TCU turned it over two more times and we couldn’t do anything with those turnovers. I say that loss was a team effort.

  • brainpimp says:

Awesome news. So happy for the young man and his health.

  • Jared Tyra says:

So glad he still has a shot at doing what he loves. That injury sounded too scary; I look forward to seeing him perform well against a tough Clemson defense.

  • F1at1ined says:

The best news here is Trevor has been cleared to get back on the field with his teammates. Even if he isn’t greenlighted to run, he has looked more capable as a passer than Cody this year. Cody as a passer seems to have regressed since replacing Trevor, which has concerned me almost as much as TK’s lack of real improvement. I hope this bowl practice time helps us decide if our future signal cxaller is already on the roster, or if we feel we need to press hard for Virgil or Murray.

  • Jeff says:

Not sure this is a good thing, he better not be the #1 QB going into the Spring and open to the QB’s on campus.

    • boomersooner says:

i’m thinking the health of a human being is a good thing

      • Jeff says:

I am happy he is fine but thinking from a football stand point, not sure he is the right guy at this point

        • Boom says:

I’ve said this multiple times, the scheme should work around the strengths of a QB. Successful coaches do this however JH has had a difficult time figuring out what he wants in an offense. This makes QB a difficult position at OU at the moment.

        • boomersooner says:

yeah. hopefully he can develop into what we all hope he can be. a bad qb doesn’t torch anyone like he did last yr against bama. so you know what he can do, now its just getting the brain farts outta there or at least making em few and far between. take the reigns off and let him go. unless someone leaves we should have a ton of depth. no fear=less chance of an injury and more confidence in his own athletic ability

          • blaster1371 says:

Of course he was throwing to Saunders, Bester and Shep that game …. Sigh… Not Neal, shep and the other guy with stone hands.

          • boomersooner says:

yeah. what about dgb, shep and quick? that sounds awesome. think this offense could put up ~50 pts a game if dgb stays. that’s incredible. 50 pts a game. 9th ranked rushing attack, hopefully the line finds the answers it’ll need. 11th most in ppg at ~39 a game. that wouldn’t go down. its exciting. turn knight loose cause you shouldn’t lose anybody and you add hansen. lots of depth

          • CS says:

I trust in Bedenbaugh, now getting DGB to stay might be the more tricky part, hopefully Bob pulls all stops to make that happen, he knows what we can have if that works.

  • Troy says:

Regardless of whether he was our starting QB or third string long snapper, I am just glad he seems to have healed properly. I know it is easy for me to forget, but football is still just a game. I’m glad to have you back, Trevor! BOOMER!!!

  • ccmosaic says:

I would feel better if he was under center for the bowl game. I just do not trust CT. I think CT will become a good QB but I also think the kid is too nervous out there on the field.

    • D Hunter Sanchez says:

They said he looked calm. But he sure had trouble completing passes.

    • Steve Johns says:

Until Thomas refines his throwing motion, he’ll continue to have problems. Passes look like their going from RF into 2nd base… low.

  • soonermusic says:

Very pleased to see this about TK. Hoping for the best for him.
