  • Sooner_Ace says:

The real question is what color shirt is the HBC wearing ? 🙂

    • Swanny says:

Love this. Commentators always come back to his commitment to OU over Bama and how it was a business decision. He’d be Bama’s #2 back behind Yeldon if he’d gone there.

      • JB says:

He’d have started out 3rd behind Yeldon & Henry, just like he did here behind Ross and Ford. I also suspect with his talent he’d move up the ranks like he did here.

    • Michael Darling says:

This kid is special both on the field and off. Has a great head on his shoulders and is a demon between the hash marks. So glad he chose OU.

    • Jake says:

He looks like he’s 35 yrs old!

    • Big Higg says:

Samaje has surpassed Adrian on my favorite OU player list. Lol

  • Jerry Reid says:

Perine is such a respectful young man. Never takes any credit and gives it all to the line. I’m looking forward to watching him tank others for 3 more years.

    • Sooner Ray says:

I hope we can keep him away from the NFL for three more years.

      • JB says:

Ditto. But if we can get 2 more years out of him, that will be great. He has been a pleasant surprise and it is hard to believe he’s a true freshman the way he sees holes, makes cuts and protects the football. He just doesn’t make freshman mistakes. Kudos to Cale on his recruitment.

  • BigJoeBrown says:

Off the top of my head I wasn’t sure. But how often does a freshman attend a weekly press conference? If I am correct this is Perine’s 2nd. Who is the past was a freshman, let alone a true freshman who spoke?

  • Jordan Esco says:

    here we go

  • Jordan Esco says:

Stoops: I thought Cody Thomas, in his first start, really performed well…with a lot of great decisions.

  • Jordan Esco says:

Samaje Perine & Aaron Ripkowski were the offensive players of the game per Stoops

  • Jordan Esco says:

Stoops: Other than the last play, I thought Jordan Thomas “really played well”

  • Jordan Esco says:

Defensive players of the game were Eric Striker, Zack Sanchez & Dominique Alexander per Stoops

  • Jordan Esco says:

Stoops on injuries: We’re still uncertain other than Trevor will not be able to play.

    • Jordan Esco says:

Grissom will be out for “a few weeks” per Stoops (take that w/ a major grain of salt given his previous ‘few weeks’ assessments

  • Jordan Esco says:

Julian Wilson also will NOT play vs. KU

  • Jordan Esco says:

Stoops says there are a lot of reasons the safeties have struggled. “Some of it’s inexperience. But those guys are good players though.”

    • Jordan Esco says:

Stoops: “We need to do a better job adjusting to what they’re doing back there, but also keeping them in the pocket…not giving them six, seven seconds to throw the ball.”

  • Jordan Esco says:

Stoops on Shepard: “We’ve got our fingers crossed that he’ll finally be ready to play this week.”

  • Jordan Esco says:

Stoops: “Samaje’s been exceptional…just how mature he is. He really conducts himself in every part of his life like he’s a senior.”

  • Jordan Esco says:

Stoops on Perine: “He has a real knack to absorb blows and keep moving.”

  • Jordan Esco says:

Stoops on Ripkowski “He is exceptional. That position is so unheralded. He’s so good blocking and so physical in how he does it.”

    • hOUligan says:

Love what Rip has brought. Loved that he was involved more in the offense receiving and that dive play. Hope to see more.

      • CS says:

Wish he had a year more, would have been fantastic to have him next year with the inexperience along the Oline.

The best walk on I can remember in a long time.

        • JB says:

I wish he’d carried the ball more in his time here, just like I wish Millard had gotten more carries. Rip is the strongest RB we have, even stronger than Perine according to the coaches. Just think of the short yardage situations we could have converted with him carrying the ball.

        • Sooners W says:

          Dom Whaley

    • mgcsooner says:

Wonderful that we just now discovered him for short yardage in the redzone now that we have only two games left and are out of the hunt. How many have we missed in the last two years?

      • SoonerSpock says:

At 257 pounds Rip is going to be very difficult to stop 3rd or 4th and short. However, I was just as excited to see C.T. under center and handing off to Rip on a quick hitter as opposed to handing the ball off 3-4 yards Perine deep in the backfield giving the 10 men in the box time to react.

  • Jordan Esco says:

Stoops concedes that, at times, they have tempo’d themselves into bad plays. Certainly thinking of Thomas’ first INT, but I feel like this has been an issue for years. Not necessarily w/ turning it over, but they’ve run those hurry up running plays for years and very rarely, if ever, have they been successful.

    • SavageSoonerEsq says:

This has always been a gripe that I have had as well. You can watch the defense and they know it’s coming, they plug the gaps and it rarely works.

    • L'Carpetron Dookmarriot says:

Auburn has executed it quite well. Thus, they “just didn’t execute the play.”

  • Jordan Esco says:

Stoops on Cody Thomas: “I’m confident he’ll make a bigger jump this week.”

  • Jordan Esco says:

*cough* b.s. *cough* Stoops: Circumstances with penalties kept us from running on a couple of drives early

      • Sooner Ray says:

Exactly, 1st and ten is not behind the chains.

        • sooner2006 says:

No, it wasn’t penalties, it was picking up 0, 1, 2 yards running that caused us to mix in some passes. We ran 10 times on first downs, people. Yes, I’m sure our staff would have loved to run more. If you think the game plan wasn’t centered around the run, you’re an idiot. Unfortunately, unless you have a defense you can count on to consistently get stops, you don’t have the luxury of running 100% of the time and accepting punts. This is the same reason we come out throwing with 48 seconds left in the half, which apparently blew some of your minds. You’re down 7, on the road, with a struggling defense, and your opponent gets the ball to start the second half. Reasonable minds may differ as to whether you try to score there, but in my opinion the decision to go for it isn’t nearly as asenine as Matt Millen may believe.

    • Andrew Kelemen says:

      Ok, 1st and 18.

      • EasTex says:

Which then became 2nd and 17, which became 3rd and 17 which became 3rd and 22.

        • OUknowitscomin says:

By all means don’t let facts stand in way of others objectives

        • boomersooner says:

Yep. I think it was soonermusic who nailed all this. I guess nobody but us read it. When you run for lots of 0’s and 2’s you might have to chuck it a little. Then you make adjustments and run over people. I seem to remember all that happening

          • EasTex says:

So do I, it went like this:

            1st possession
1st and 10 at OKLA 23 Cody Thomas pass incomplete

2nd and 10 at OKLA 7 Alex Ross run for 9 yds to the Okla 16 0 7

            4th possession
Scoring drive-5 rushes for 12 yards.
Thank Heaven for the forward pass.

          • Sooners W says:

1st down plays in first half.
            rushes 10 for 23 yards-longest gain 7
            passing 3 for 6, 85 yards – 1 pick

2nd downs 11 of them in the first half. Average was 2nd and 9.

wouldn’t exactly call the run game dominant in half #1

          • hOUligan says:

For the love of all creatures great and small, would you and soonermusic please cease with your attempts to obfuscate what happened with facts that don’t support their perceptions, no matter how erroneous. Some people.

          • EasTex says:

So I should be a realist without facts?
            /s

          • Sooner Ray says:

Tex, this game plan subject seems to be as divisive as a loss so I’ll run my thoughts by you since you’ve got a good feel for who I am. Some say the plan was the same for all 4 qtr’s and others feel a new game plan was brought out for the second half. The breakdown you linked backs up both in some respect. We were behind the chains for one series in the first half that required some good passes to catch up, we also threw on first down some. When I look at the breakdown I see 17 passes and 18 runs in the first half. I see 3 passes and 32 runs in the second half, not close to being the same. I like the score in the second half better than the first. This is my opinion of what was going on, aside from the series with penalty because that couldn’t be predicted. Bob and Josh wanted to try their normal balanced offense with Cody at the helm to see how he could run it (and not a bad plan under the circumstances) but when it wasn’t turning out in their favor due to weather and mistakes, they buckled into the run game O that they had in their pocket to secure the win. That’s not an unrealistic observation is it?

          • boomersooner says:

Not Tex but the whole point of the game plan was nailed by soonermusic the other day. We tried to run it and weren’t that successful in the 1st half. Yes we had some nice runs but no sustained success. We had to throw some. It was also mentioned that we made some blocking adjustments at the half and that along with getting worn down and maybe loosened a tad by the pass as well as Cody being awesome with his run game and fakes and whatnot

          • Sooner Ray says:

I’ve never argued the outcome of the game or what we had to do to win. My comments have been about the claim that there was only one plan for the entire game. Maybe there was but the run/pass numbers in the first half look exactly like our normal offense we run every week and the second half numbers look like a plan everyone has used to beat tech. I’m not saying I’m right or anyone else is wrong, I’m just comparing 17/18 vs. 3/32.

          • boomersooner says:

Yeah I know. Not trying to call you out or nothing. I just think that what soonermusic had said made a lot of sense. We weren’t getting consistent yds and we had quite a few penalties and he hit a couple big throws. Now he and I could be completely wrong and Heupel got locked in a broom closet at the half…

          • Sooner Ray says:

After I watched the game for the third time, I could see soonermusic’s as well as Tex’s view of the game (and others) and I compare that to what I saw. That’s what is fun about these places, not fighting but seeing everyone’s point of view and hashing it out. My wife has made it real clear to me that I can’t always be right. 🙂

          • boomersooner says:

Ditto. I don’t approach some people the right way. I just can’t stand it when someone thinks they’re a know it all and won’t come off their hardheadedness. You and I don’t agree all the time, me and hosts don’t agree all the time but we can be civil and talk it out. Love that. So thank you

          • EasTex says:

            No, I don’t think it’s unrealistic.
I would add that many of CT’s early throws were safe, simple confidence throws because you always need your QB “into” the game and further, I think the OL did a much better job of blocking in the 2nd half and had no penalties.
No one can dispute how effective the run was in the 2nd half nor how crucial the two 3rd and long pass completions CT threw for 1st downs in the only scoring drive in the first half.

    • SoonerfanTU says:

Dude is becoming more and more like Trabor every day. What a joke.

      • ND52 says:

Someone has to ask the hard questions. Why does everyone have to be likable in the local media in order to do their job @soonerfantu:disqus ?

        • SoonerfanTU says:

Asking the hard questions, and being a douche, are two separate things. So is asking some hard questions, and asking some other questions that aren’t meant to be condescending and negative. You know, show some balance. Bob, and no other coach in America, are going to answer some of the questions Hoover asks. And Hoover knows that. So to continue to ask, to me, is simply being a dick for the sake of being a dick.

          • ND52 says:

No offense @soonerfantu:disqus……………………..but you seem easily offended.

          • SoonerfanTU says:

The same could be said about yourself.

          • ND52 says:

Really man? I’m not the one on here calling people names for merely doing their jobs……………….

          • boomersooner says:

I made the mistake of getting into it twice with this guy. His feelings get hurt quite easily and your argument will last 45 mins longer than you’d hoped

          • ND52 says:

@disqus_BeW3hegp9d:disqus Lol! Says the guy who throws an absolute fit whenever someone criticizes the coaching staff. Is there anyone on the board you haven’t accused of being full of bitterness and hate?

          • boomersooner says:

Yep. You can ask hard questions and still be respectful. I think a lot of people respect a football coach more than a guy who is average at putting words together to form sentences

  • Jordan Esco says:

There’s no downside to others being able to see the coaches screaming in a player’s face according to Bob.

We won a NC under Stoops during a season that had a lot, and I do mean a LOT, more yelling on the sidelines than anything we’ve seen this season.

Then why didn’t you?!? Oh, wait, I know why.

    • JB says:

I know I sound like a broken record, but it baffles me why our coaches seem to think they need to reinvent the wheel. WVU, with a crappy D, showed the world how to beat Baylor. But we try something different, soft coverage/deep zones and we were torched.

TTU is 119th out of 125 D-1 teams in run defense. Arkansas threw 12 total passes for 61 yds and ran 68 times for 438 yards, and spanked TTU on their home field. So we have a brand new starter at QB and he threw 17 times in the first half. WTF? I’m happy we won but it could’ve been much bigger if we pounded the ball down their throats from the start.

      • Jared William Reininger says:

        This

      • Bryan says:

My theory is that JH routinely outsmarts himself. Case-in-point with Tech. He assumes that Tech acknowledges the fact they struggle to stop the run. Thus, with Oklahoma being a a strong running team, they spend the week preparing to stop the run, and on Saturday, they stack the box and sell out to stop the run. Therefore, he prepares a gameplan to throw, thus outsmarting Tech. I’m no coordinator, nor do I claim to know half as much as JH, but my naive impression is … you watch game film, prepare a gameplan based on what you’ve seen, and attempt to execute said gameplan, making adjustments as you go. No need to switch to air-raid when your first run goes for a gain of 2. Trust your preparation and player execution.

    • Soonerfandave84 says:

Oh to know what was being said there

    • mgcsooner says:

You must have a lip reader following you. Enlist them immediately!

    • soonermusic says:

Amazing that even after it’s pointed out in great detail, so many don’t pay attention to the actual results of the run plays 10 of them on first down. It’s like some folks’ minds are made up before the game, and it just doesn’t matter what happens on the field. I suppose punting a few more times to Tech, as fast as they were scoring in the first half would have been a good idea? Not directed at you in particular, Jordan, because there are many others on here and in the media who seem to feel the same way. Oh, well…

      • boomersooner says:

Thanks again for that breakdown. Cool to see it put to numbers. Looked like some pretty good early runs but not even close to sustained success. Made the adjustments at the half and beat the tar outta tech. One could ask for more but one could also be called picky or asking for too much or not know what one is talking about

      • Easton says:

        Thank you.

It’s getting harder and harder to respect some of the guys that want to keep pushing an agenda.

Can’t deny Bell has blocked and caught the ball well, especially considering he hasn’t been in that position catching/blocking since hs. It’s up to Mac to get himself as prepared mentally and physically and get onto the field after 3 years at that position.

    • SavageSoonerEsq says:

I would imagine that you either grow thick skin or cry yourself to sleep after losing your spot to a converted QB.

Don’t think anyone will ever know if he “lost” the spot.

        • SavageSoonerEsq says:

I would imagine it’s pretty safe to say the backup TE would’ve been the starting TE had a QB not been moved to TE.

        • SavageSoonerEsq says:

I would think it’s pretty safe to say that the now backup TE would’ve been the starting TE, but for the QB who switched positions and is now the starting TE. Maybe my deductive reasoning is a little off though.

    • ND52 says:

Hasn’t Bell earned the right to stay where he is and prepare for the NFL as a TE? Paul Thompson saved the 2006 season but forfeited his NFL future in doing so.

    • Wilson says:

Taylor had his opportunity, he gets one more chance next year I think. But, if Ijalana beats him out…he’s probably done…thoughts?

      • Boom says:

He may not fit JH system but doesn’t mean he’s not a good TE. Not saying JH’s system is good or bad. Same can be said about a QB. I find it interesting the Chiefs QB was horrible and a bust but then in a different system he is shining in KC. Hope he continues to work hard as good things will always come his way if he does.

        • Wilson says:

Wasn’t implying he is not a good TE and I agree with your comments. Which, is why it doesn’t bother me when kids transfer. They can’t ask for a trade, like in the Pros, to a system or coaching style that best fits their talents. Just wondered what would be the reasoning (other than injury) for a kid of his obvious high school talent doesn’t get on the field.

      • Jordan Esco says:

He had his opportunity? When was that exactly?

        • Wilson says:

all summer, spring, etc. Is he not a good practice player? I know he was injured, but other than not performing in practice to the point needed to get on the field, what do you think the reason is he is not playing? Not much of a conspiracy theorist myself.

          • Jordan Esco says:

From what I’ve heard the job was going to Bell’s almost no matter what. Admittedly, I’m not at practice but I still find it hard to believe McNamara has ever been given much of a chance. I could be wrong tho

          • Wilson says:

Fair enough…you are closer to the pulse of the team and sources than I am (or want to be). I do have people I know on the ‘team’ (I consider them friends not sources…); I never ask them any questions about the team or any of its dynamics nor do I want to know from them quite honestly. I can get that scuttlebutt (if I care) from others, but always keep it to myself. Heck they don’t even know I comment on message boards. Because most of it has nothing to do with the price of tea in Boston…just stuff every team in the nation ,no matter the level, goes through. Outside speculation is usually just that. Kind of like seeing half of a picture and then trying to figure out what’s in the other half…bout a 50% chance of getting it right. LOL

  • Jordan Esco says:

    Joe C. about to speak

  • Jordan Esco says:

And that’s a wrap for today

  • JB says:

I didn’t get to watch the first half (had to listen on radio). Is Julian Wilson injured, or just in the doghouse after the yelling match with Mike during Baylor debacle? I know he got burned vs BU but I attribute that mostly to mike aligning him wrong for his skill set.

  • EasTex says:

Actually got to watch it live this week.
Much more enjoyable without the bile, snark and sneer.

  • Jordan Esco says:

Just realized it wasn’t quite as lively today b/c Hoover was in Stoolwater trolling Gundy

    • Easton says:

I enjoyed the press conference because I did not have to cuss at my computer following another dumb question from Hoover.

  • soonermusic says:

Ok, I’m only gonna say this once…:-) Someone needs to get in touch with Coach and suggest to him that as a public representative of an institution of higher learning, he should please replace the non-word “hisself” with “himself.” I am well aware that Ol’ Diz once said “there are many folks who ain’t saying’ ain’t, who ain’t eaten'” and I am fully a fan of folksy grammar when appropriate, but he is representing OU and I think it’s not too much to ask. 🙂
OK, I’m done…back to your regularly scheduled program….
