Sooners Hold Annual Football Banquet

The end of every OU Football season is typically marked with the holding of the annual football banquet, at which a number of awards are handed out and good times are had by all.

Here are this year’s award winners (via Sooner Sports):

Bob Kalsu Award – Blake Bell and Daryl Williams
Don Key Award – Aaron Ripkowski
Derrick Shepard Most Inspirational Walk-On Player of the Year Award – David Driskill
Special Teams Players of the Year – Nick Hodgson and Michael Hunnicutt
Offensive Scout Team Players of the Year – Nick Basquine, Baker Mayfield and Joe Palange
Defensive Scout Team Players of the Year – Najee Bissoon and David Driskill
December 2014 Graduates – Jed Barnett, Ty Darlington, Aaron Franklin, Caleb Gastelum, Geneo Grissom, Quentin Hayes, Chuka Ndulue, Tyrus Thompson and Daryl Williams

The Bob Kalsu Award is bestowed annually to a member of the team who personifies Kalsu’s spirit of leadership, serving as a motivator and role model for his teammates. Kalsu earned All-America honors in 1967 as an offensive tackle while helping the Sooners to a Big 8 Championship. Serving as a member of the U.S. Army’s highly-decorated 101st Airborne Division, Kalsu was killed by North Vietnamese mortar fire on July 21, 1970.

The Don Key Award is presented annually to a senior who exemplifies all-around excellence in the classroom and on the field. Key was a three-year starter for the Sooners, an All-Big 8 guard and potential All-American until cancer ended his football career in 1981. Barry Switzer established the Don Key Award in 1982.

Here is some video of the event courtesy of Sooner Sports TV (link if you can’t see the video below)

And Ty Darlington’s graduation speech, which I’m told was rather impressive. Couldn’t have been more impressive than him needing just two and a half years to graduate, which is just ridiculous. (Again, link if you can’t see video below)

Do you think polange has a chance to play next year in rip’s spot?

    • blaster1371 says:

I’m not the “you” being asked but I think so. While Flowers is very athletic he doesn’t block with that bruiser mentality.

    • EasTex says:

I think Rip hands his lunch pail and hard hat to Palange.

      • hOUligan says:

Yep. Think it’ll be like Millard-Rip 1.1, the athlete and the bruiser. Saw this.
“He’s a ferocious hitter. As hard as he hits on the first play, he’ll
hit you just as hard on the last play,” St. Edward coach Rick Finotti
said. “Academically, he’s extremely strong. We’re excited for him.” on his LOI to Wm&Mary.
Check his Soonersports bio pic. Bull necked, square jaw with a huge cut on his chin. Guy has that look. Hope he and Mayfield can come off the scout team, and DGB, too, and wreak havoc upon our opponents next season.

        • boomersooner says:

holy smokes. he looks like a hockey player. those guys are fierce. some of the best athletes i’ve ever seen, with severe toughness to boot

  • Kyle says:

Is Ty Darlington going to return next year and attend graduate school or is he moving on?

    • blaster1371 says:

I would bet he will be back. Soonerism runs deep in his family. If you thought he might go pro, there just hasn’t been enough buzz about him to think he’d get drafted. Plus, he strikes me as the silent leader type and all the young ‘uns playing on the line next season would be something that would excite him to play.

    • ratman says:

      He will be back.

    • Brent says:

He’ll probably have his PHD by the RRSO…

  • EasTex says:

Years from now, when all these young men are no longer playing football and have established themselves in different careers, those keep sake framed photos next to their degrees will look good hanging in their offices. Many wonderful memories and reflections will be with them for the rest of their lives.
I’m proud of and for all of them.

Really proud of home town kid, Aaron Franklin. I don’t know about this year but twice he was Academic All-Big 12 1st team in his career. Raised by his Mom, he has exceeded the societal trend of single parent children and I wish him the absolute best life has to offer.

    • rphokc says:

et……..why do you think af didn’t have more success here……..as I recall, he was highly regarded when recruited……….then there was that disastrous yr for all lbs when mstoops first got here………

      • EasTex says:

I have no idea. He played quite a bit as a R-Soph and made some nice plays against Texsa. That was also the year when the lbs just disappeared late in the season. He’s the same size as Alexander and a little faster. When he filled in for Alexander earlier this year when he broke his hand, Aaron played well.

        • CrimsonGhost says:

I remember being surprised when Corey Nelson went down last year and the true freshman Alexander got the start over the more experienced Franklin. All I can guess is that Franklin must have been passed due to what coaches saw in practices.

          • EasTex says:

All we can do is guess. Still proud of the young man for getting his degree and being a solid Sooner. He contributed at lb and special teams.

  • Jeff says:

    So DGB is gone???

  • Jared Tyra says:

Wow on Ty Darlington and his speech. I would love to echo every single day his final three phrases he gave to remember over everything else: JESUS SAVES, BOOMER SOONER, & TEXAS SUCKS!

  • Stephen Dale says:

glad to see so many obtain their degrees. they will be needed and the guys are now prepared to find a job and start paying taxes like the rest of us……….congrats and welcome to the ‘real world’.

  • Mysterio1 says:

    Was Mike Stoops there?

  • Stephen Dale says:

interesting that all the scout team award winners ( both sides of the LOS) are walkons. guess we now know why no other scholarship frosh gravitated to the varsity other than those who will letter ………

  • Cory Reedy says:

Jesus Saves. Boomer Sooner. And Texas Sucks. BRILLIANT! LOL

  • OohRah Mama says:

SIAP…This coverage of Shep absolutely warms my heart. Great young man, great family!
