OU Headed To Russell Athletic Bowl (UPDATED)

Image via @RussellAthBowl

As most expected, OU has now officially accepted an invitation to the 2014 Russell Athletic Bowl. The game will take place on Dec. 29th, in Orlando, and is scheduled for a 4:30 pm (central) kick. You can find more on the game here.

However, at the time of this posting their opponent has yet to be announced. The other available spot is slated for an ACC team with the most likely candidates being Clemson, Louisville, or Duke. If you’re willing to believe Twitter, most are expecting Clemson to be the choice.

We’ll be sure to update you once OU’s opponent is officially announced. In the meantime, feel free to offer your thoughts/interest on the destination and/or the prospective opponents.

UPDATE: As expected, it will be OU vs. Clemson.

    Meh

Awesome now we can pull a clemson on Clemson

  • Rico says:

played clemson last time we were there and lost in Switzers last game. do we lose another hall of fame coach after this one too?

    bv vs jh

  • Kelly Gurbcock says:

Joke bowl for a joke team in a joke conference. Time to leave the big 12 behind to save the program and bolster recruiting.

  • blaster1371 says:

I will be at Disneyland with the family, might not even set the DVR. This team is not very good and brings no pleasure to watch them. That decision to re punt the ball after nearly having it blocked and yet still setting OSU at the 15 and having to drive 85 yars in a minute with not time outs just epitomizes this entire season

  • Greg sparks says:

I know people are gunna say we need the practice and all, but this is a no win situation, I’d hate to get a nfl bound sr or jr hurt in a game that by our standards doesn’t mean anything. It’s time to move on, we’ve got recruiting to get done, that’s our life’s blood and the only way this team is going to get better. After four months of practice 2-3 weeks more wont help not with this current staff arrangement.

    • rphokc says:

I think they’re contractually required to accept bowl invites…………right about the players

    • Daddy R says:

Deny? Hey, 8-4 is not that damn bad of a season. Now, compared to OUr expectations, sure, but 8-4 is very respectable (although I dont want to get used to it..) and the players deserve to play in the bowl game they were chosen for. For the seniors, its one last chance to play.

      • Greg sparks says:

Yep if we’re tulsa. But we’re not, and 8-5 is staring us in the face with the current staff. And the seniors will get the senior bowl, shrine, ect. We just finished with the “most disappointing ” moniker in all of ncaa football, I’m sure recruiting is difficult now more than ever and our game changer isn’t what they thought it would be. I just think we’ve got bigger fish to fry than trying to be Russell athletic supporter bowl champs.

        • Daddy R says:

Still disagree. and your analogy about Tulsa just doesnt work. Different levels of football. 8-5 for TU is a good year. 8-5 for us is average, but not the “all is fallen to hell” stuff you are spewing. I agree we need changes, but not at the expense of the players, and their families, or us. If we win, helps with recruiting some. If we lose, doesnt hurt worse than it has already.

And as far as I’m concerned, Senior and Shrine bowl jerseys dont quite measure up to wearing the Sooners one last time.

          • Greg sparks says:

Maybe slow down.. I said 8-5 is ok for tu. Not here never will be, I hope we never average 8-5 like you think is average for us. Fallen to hell… No not yet but 4-5 loss seasons, and that’s not ou football, unless you reall think that’s normal.

          • Daddy R says:

I really dont know what to think is normal in regards to CFB anymore. Landscape changes every freakin year now. I am in agreement with you that changes are needed, and 8-5 just doesnt cut it. Just not at the expense of the players and their bowl game.

          • Greg sparks says:

Ya I here ya, I probably let the seniors decide.

  • cush creekmont says:

The good news about this bowl is it will be in 2014 – so, 2015 can be uncluttered from any part of this dismal season.

  • CrimsonGhost says:

I, for one, am happy to get to see my Sooners play one more game this year. It will be interesting to see us play an out of conference opponent, and I think that going to a bowl (even an unimpressive one) is better for recruiting than not going to one.

    BOOOOOOO *runs off crying*

  • ccmosaic says:

    Blah.

  • Jared Tyra says:

    It’s clemson

  • Billy says:

This is big. Russell athletics is huge in the active 60+ years old demographic.

  • Jeff says:

I expect OU to give back half there tickets

  • Austin says:

I may have to move out of the state of sc if ou goes down there and loses

  • Jordan Esco says:

    Now it’s official. Update added.

  • BigJoeBrown says:

I have to think that Brent Venerables feels pretty good going up against our offense.

    • SoonerfanTU says:

I’ll feel better about things if Knight can play.

      • EasTex says:

That and if Perine and Ford are healthy.

      • Ryan says:

You realize that with his injury he will probably never be allowed to run in a game again right? Without that he is pretty useless. Horrible passer.

        • SCKSChief says:

Bob will probably try to get the refs to allow him to wear the blue shirt in the game.

        • Daddy R says:

What exactly was his injury? Im not sure Ive ever heard..?

          • SCKSChief says:

            I don’t know that it’s ever been accurately described. All I’ve heard is a “neck/shoulder thing”. I believe that’s a technical term…

          • A Loyal Patriot says:

He suffered from a temporary paralysis known as transient quadriplegia

          • Ryan says:

Something called “transient quadriplegia.” He suffered temporary paralysis after the hit he took versus Baylor. If I were him I’d never play again. Long term health is more important.

          • Daddy R says:

Oh wow. Thats crazy. Well, here’s to the health of Trevor then.!

        • SoonerfanTU says:

I doubt that. If he is healthy enough to play, he is healthy enough to be turned loose.

Besides, it’s just for one game most likely. I don’t see him starting next season.

          • SoonerfanTU says:

As for being a horrible passer, if he is horrible, what is Cody Thomas?

          • Ryan says:

Exactly. What does that tell you about the state of our program if Knight is our best option? Mayfield better be a lot better than these guys or we are screwed for awhile.

          • SoonerfanTU says:

Why would you say “state of the program” when talking about ONE position? QB play has not been good enough for two seasons now. MOST of that is on Trevor Knight. One QB. Sure, Thomas hasn’t been good in a few games this year, but really, we’re talking about two seasons of TK.

Unfortunately, there are very few QB’s you can sign, plug in, and get better play from then what we’ve seen from TK this season. And we passed on going after much this year, b/c we are loaded. I hope like crazy Mayfield is the answer next season. We don’t need Joe Montana at QB. We just need a guy that can drop back, and hit the open guys in the numbers. Landry, most of the time could do that. Maybe Mayfield can be that guy. If not, we will struggle until we get somebody in here that can.

We’ve had a GREAT run on QB’s under Bob. Maybe the best of any school in the country under that time. Why do OU fans freak out when we have two seasons of less than stellar play? I simply don’t understand the thinking that OU is never gonna struggle, or have a period of down turn.

          • Ryan says:

Do you ever see an elite year by a program without great QB play? That can make up for a lot of stuff. This year all the QB’s have been great for the teams in the playoffs, and TCU and Baylor. They’re all in another world compared to OU’s QB’s. How can OU go from all these great QB’s they had to mediocre QB’s today??

          • SCKSChief says:

Strange that tOSU has TWO of them this season.

          • Ryan says:

            Going on THREE

          • Ryan says:

Not with Stoops’ stubborness. And it better be open competition in the spring.

          • SoonerfanTU says:

            Better be or what? lol

            Of course it will be.

  • Big Higg says:

    Meh.

  • Wilson says:

Well Orlando….here I come! It’s another football game. Oh and Santa about that last request yesterday. Going to have to go above you’re head. Dear God….please. .

  • Billy says:

I would go to this game if it wasn’t a billion miles away.

  • SCKSChief says:

Venables is gonna gut this OU offense. Clemson will crush them.

  • Sooner Ray says:

If we are big underdogs. I like our chances.

    • SCKSChief says:

      Define “big”.

    • SoonerfanTU says:

We’ll probably be favored. Clemson has been very good this season either.

    • EasTex says:

If we are healthy I like our chances even better.

      • james babcock says:

Eas tex when we lose four games again next year will your opinion of big game bob finally change or are you content in your old age to just talk about the good old day’s.

        • EasTex says:

When purple frogs fly out of your rear will you let us know?

          • james babcock says:

Eas tex you are in a state of denial after yesterday that was the worst call in over 40 year’s of watching Oklahoma football the decision by big game bob to repunt was unforgivable not even john blake made that dumb of a coaching decision.

          • EasTex says:

            It happened.
Just because you and others consumed with negativity want to blubber, cry and whine doesn’t mean I should.
I consider you a silly person and can’t take you or anyone seriously that believes Bob Stoops should be fired. Deal with it.

          • james babcock says:

Deal with it that is all you can say b.s that was pathetic coaching yesterday and all you can say is anybody who challenges golden boy bob is negative b.s you are a joke.

          • EasTex says:

Your very first post here after the Kst game, when you were going by your poodles name, called for Bob Stoops to be fired.
You are an idiot of the lowest order.

          • james babcock says:

Bye the way are dog is a Rottweiler.

          • EasTex says:

            LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

          • paganpink says:

There’s just no way, Eeyore! Big dogs are hard work to take care of. You’re offended constantly- and wouldn’t have the time!

          • SoonerCindy says:

I am with you on that Eas Tex.

        • SoonerCindy says:

Don’t you think that he EasTex should be able to voice his opinion too? You know without being called out and ridiculed.

          • james babcock says:

Yes i respect eas tex right but all he does is rip me every time i challenge golden boy boy who can’t do no wrong in his eye’s.

          • EasTex says:

No you don’t and I have no respect for you.
Challenge my big ol’butt, you called for Bob to be fired in your very first comment here.

          • james babcock says:

Yes because he doesn’t win anymore if Alabama can do it why can’t we and don’t tell because they are cheating maybe nick saban is that good a coach .

          • EasTex says:

So you do admit you were lying when you said “challenge?”

    • james babcock says:

No chance sooner ray we win this game this coaching staff is just dreadful big game bob will find a way screw up in this game but we at least we won’t have to here his post game rant about how the program is in great shape.

  • BigJoeBrown says:

I can see it now…”Oh that’s cool, they have some special 80’s throwback jersey’s for the teams”

Wilford Brimley with the “coin toss”

  • SCKSChief says:

Hey! I just found a secondary worse than OU’s…the Chiefs. Barf.

  • Daddy R says:

    Clemson vs Oklahoma

  • Daddy R says:

Curios question? Whats Spurrier Jr doing these days? He could be like our “lane kiffin.” haha !

  • D'Brickashaw Ferguson says:

Clemson is a great opponent given our disappointing season. Will be a tough matchup with their mobile & accurate QB Deshaun Watson and solid defense

    • Hotrod33 says:

If it is any indication, OU will make him look like a Heisman winner and put up career numbers against us. Venables will get to payback his old team and we will look like we could care less being there. Why do the bowls always pit us against former coaches? It never ends good for us. SMH

    • DrZemus says:

He’s probably going to have ACL surgery before the bowl.

  • James D-Space says:

Oh boy, I can hardly wait.

  • larry adams says:

as I see it we don’t have a good qb,can’t throw a straight pass also untill ou gets rid of bobs brother and hires a good defense minded person who knows how to coach the players instead of yelling at them,we are doomed!

    • SoonerfanTU says:

      DOOMED!!!

    • Peddle80 says:

Sorry Larry about piling on there a little, but the “doomed” portion of your post was just too over the top.

      • larry adams says:

sorry you don’t agree but I stick by what I said.doomed may be a little strong ,but 8/4 is not a good season for the sooners as I see it and will reflect on our recruiting.

    • SoonerCindy says:

I remember when Kansas fired Mangino for yelling at the players. Yeah that was a real great move… Sarcasm intended.

      • Peddle80 says:

Yeah, this seems like sort of a strange new issue to have with coaches. All the coaches grew up with yelled, sometimes to the point that it was comical, but they yelled. Just seems like a fact of life to me.

      • larry adams says:

soonercindy, when I posted my thoughts I didn’t realize I would be getting slammed,so I won’t be posting anymore.Oh,an after thought,I am 74 yrs.old and have been a sooner fan for many many years.slam all you want,I won’t be wasting my time with this anymore.

    • Bill Meyer says:

Nobody minds yelling at players when we win, did all year in 2000. So please give it a rest.

  • james babcock says:

From now i am going to call bob stoop’s golden boy bob because there are people on this web who think that golden boy can’t do no wrong i guess that golden boy bob is the second coming of Jesus.

    • Sooner Ray says:

      Jesus taught Bob proper grammar.

      • hOUligan says:

        In a great way.

      • james babcock says:

Sorry sooner ray but this time you just can’t blow this off. I respect you and eas tex right to voice your support for golden boy bob but i can’t after yesterday.

        • Sooner Ray says:

I’m not blowing anything off and I’m not pumping Bob as the second coming. When you fire a HC, and the coach with the most wins in Sooner history, you also have to be prepared to lose everyone else on the staff. I don’t want to lose Cale or our new line coaches. Bob makes mistakes like many others and his job is to build the best possible staff that can be assembled. If he ignores weaknesses year after year without attempting to improve, then we can start the “fire Bob” campaign. He has made changes in the past and I’m sure he is very aware that more need to be made after this season.

    • Peddle80 says:

There are both Homers and Chicken Littles in the fan base James, just two different points of view nothing to get bent out of shape about.

    • EasTex says:

Still cryin’ and lyin’ I see.
      Silly person.

      • james babcock says:

You know i will still pray for you because that was what Jesus taught to love those who despise you.

        • EasTex says:

It’s you that you should be praying for.

          • james babcock says:

I don’t need to because i have already accepted Jesus as my Savior.

          • Bill Meyer says:

So congrats you now have a free pass to sin you hippocrate!

          • james babcock says:

No because Jesus died for sinners like you and me i never said i was perfect that was why he went to the cross for sinners like me and you.

          • rphokc says:

really, dudley, put a lid on it please

          • james babcock says:

Bill meyer called me a hypocrite can’t let that go unchallenged i never have said i was perfect.

          • EasTex says:

          • EasTex says:

This clown blew in here earlier and picked a fight.
As long as he doesn’t address me in anyway I will continue to avoid him.

          • james babcock says:

So eas tex all you are going to do is criticize me you should read the article jordan just wrote wrote about people like you who are in denial.

          • Easton says:

            James, let it rest now.

          • james babcock says:

Easton i want to but all eas tex does is criticize me i don’t hate the guy in fact he is probably a nice guy just wish he would stop criticizing me.

          • Easton says:

Take the heat, and keep chugging James, it’s okay. We all play on the same level playing field. It’s us down here, and God up there, and around here, and under everything. No man is above another. Lots of very powerful voices, good points, and many arguments here. At the end of this day God is God, we are here men and women amongst man and woman. Tomorrow the sun will shine on all of us, and we ll all open our eyes to face the reality of the day. Matthew 10 brother.

            Dude, seriously get help.

        • paganpink says:

Have a little humility Babcock. You’re not exactly God’s gift to O.U. fandom. As a matter of fact, I’m not even sure you’re a fan.

        • EasTex says:

That silly person actually picked a fight with me, used the Jesus ploy to thwart any response and when that didn’t work he lied and stated I was criticizing him.
Oh and he maintains his fire Bob Stoops idiocy.

          • boomersooner says:

I won’t post on that thread and won’t read it. I know the author’s mind set and really don’t have anything to do with him and ignore his posts and editorializing. I was very disappointed when he came to TFB after seeing his act at the other place.

    At least it’s not Duke.

  • Sooner_Ace says:

Ok OUr team has another game, great for the seniors to go out as Sooners. The season has been pile of “What if” questions in rapid fire succession. Something is amiss in Sooner Land, and for my 2 cents it’s on the staff (as a whole) at this time. One weak link is all it takes to take you down, and i fear we have more than one weak link….Boomer

  • Stephen Dale says:

this upcoming game vs Clemson will be one very similar to watching the lions attack and destroy condemned people in the roman coliseum….. OU has as much chance to win as the condemned did against hungry lions….. OU had no business accepting this game given its injury situation as well as its emotional state following BGB’s judgement lapse …

  • MrBigsby says:

People, please speak with your wallets….DO NOT BUY TICKETS TO THIS GAME. The administration needs to know that we as fans are not satisfied with what’s going on with this coaching staff. Money speaks. DO NOT BUY TICKETS. Sit on your couch and watch if you must, but DO NOT BUY TICKETS.

I am here to get my lump of coal. Win or Lose this is my team, but damn, it sucks

  • Randy White says:

I have a feeling this game could get ugly fast. Clemson is for real! Not a lot of HS superstars, but just hardnosed guys who’ve been developed and come to play. Well coached team against our Sooners, I’ll take coaching everyday. The expirence will be good for the young guys and their development.

  • Easton says:

“The Sooners (8-4, 5-4 Big 12) will face Clemson (9-3, 6-2 ACC) in the
Russell Athletic Bowl on Dec. 29 at 4:30 p.m. The game is played inside
Florida Citrus Bowl Stadium in Orlando.”

    “Oklahoma
hasn’t played in Orlando since the 1989 Citrus Bowl, when the Sooners —
coincidentally — lost to Clemson in what turned out to be legendary
    coach Barry Switzer’s final game.”

  • OU-Texan! says:

I’m happy for the boys. They get to go “bowl”ing. I saw the gifts they get and it’s pretty impressive. It’s also a good opportunity to see if the young guys can have a good starting point for next season and hopefully a good sendoff for the seniors. With all the ups and downs this year (and shame on the coaches for the re-kick with a minute left to the First Team All Big 12 kick returner), I think being invited to the bowl game is good for the school and the players. BOOMER!!!
