Are The Sooners Out?

Image via Associated Press

Every year Sooner fans start the season with hopes that Oklahoma will make it to the national championship. I wouldn’t have it any other way. Sooner fans have high expectations because they belong to a tradition that is perhaps the richest in the union. With those expectations though, comes that painful fall when expectations aren’t met.

After the loss to TCU, some fans were hopeful OU could regroup, win out, and maybe still find themselves in the playoffs. No surprise to any of y’all, I was in that group. Meanwhile, others thought “it’s over.” After this second loss, the numbers in that first group…that oh so optimistic group…plummeted. But I for one, am still holding out hope.

It’s not huge hope. But it’s more like…fun hope. I will admit, I love the game of football. And I love watching the Sooners play, so I enjoy the season regardless of whether OU wins or loses. So maybe for that reason it’s easier for me to hope without the fear of being devastated by another loss. If OU loses again I’ll have lost any hope of a playoff spot, but I’ll still have fun watching college football and my Sooners.

So before you all blast me for being the sunshine pumping, kool-aid drinking, unicorn riding, rainbow chaser…here me out.

Put aside your feelings about how good the Sooners are or are not. Or how good they can or can’t be. We’ll discuss that in another post. I’m strictly saying that IF the Sooners can win out, and perhaps even win out impressively, is there a chance they backdoor their way into the playoff?

The BCS era is over.

If you haven’t look at it yet, take a look at the college football playoff selection committee protocol: HERE.

The simply reality is we don’t know how the selection committee is going to go about weighing the various factors. For example, something I found interesting written in the protocol that was never overtly dealt with during the BCS era was the following:

That the committee will consider, among other things, “Other relevant factors such as key injuries that may have affected a team’s performance during the season, or likely will affect its postseason performance.”

The Sooners haven’t had any major injuries, but that isn’t really my point. My point is I don’t think we can just assume that whatever the AP poll or the Coaches poll says right now, or even at the end of the season, will be the de facto final four. The committee is going to determine their final four, and I’m sure the individual members will do a detailed analysis and weigh factors as each deems fit.

ESPN would have everyone believe that two SEC teams will get in, because they believe two SEC teams should get in (and have a vested financial interest in that happening). And if that’s the case then, yes, that leaves the chances of the Sooners getting in next to impossible. But that same network told everyone that Michigan State was out after they got beat by Oregon, because the Big 10 is so weak and yet the Spartans appear to be right back in the hunt. ESPN doesn’t know…I don’t know…and you don’t know. And we certainly don’t know how the remainder of the season will play out.

All we know is what the committee organizers have published about how they will go about selecting a team, and even there we don’t know how much each individual will weigh the various factors.

Favoring a Conference Champion

My guess however is that, in the first go round, the committee isn’t going to want to put two teams from a single conference in the playoffs. In fact, the website states:

“The criteria to be provided to the selection committee must be aligned with the ideals of the commissioners, Presidents, athletic directors and coaches to honor regular season success while at the same time providing enough flexibility and discretion to select a non-champion or independent under circumstances where that particular non-champion or independent is unequivocally one of the four best teams in the country.”

I found the quote above particularly interesting because it’s clear from the words I’ve highlighted that the committee’s default position is that conference champions should be favored. And only in circumstances where a team that has not won a conference championship is UNEQUIVOCALLY one of the four best teams in the country should they be allowed in. In other words, it sounds like the burden of proof is quite high for a team that hasn’t won their conference and I don’t reckon ESPN’s love affair with the SEC is going to weigh as heavily on the selection committee as they might hope. After all, the committee is comprised of people from different conferences.

Keep in mind also that the selection committee isn’t just filling out a ballot last minute and handing it in. They are presumably looking at this whole thing with a careful eye. And when you look at the Sooners with a careful eye, you see two losses to two very good teams. One was a close road loss that could have easily gone the other way to a team that destroyed the current Big 10 West leader. The other loss was at home, but clearly should have gone the other way. There aren’t any devastating blows that make the Sooners toxic or their entry into the playoff completely unjustifiable assuming, of course, they find a way to win the Big 12.

But that’s the key, as I see it…winning the Big 12. I don’t know if that will be enough but I do believe it gives OU a reasonable argument to backdoor their way into the playoff. Obviously, the Sooners don’t hold the keys to their own fate when it comes to winning the Big 12. But we all know this conference well enough to know that it’s still anybodies to win. And with Baylor already having lost (by a fairly significant margin) and OU having beat the team that beat them (also by a fairly significant margin), the Sooners still having a chance to take down Baylor is a good thing. But OU needs to look good doing it.

One of my favorite scenes, in one of my favorite movies, the Goonies, is when Andy is playing the bone piano and as she mis-plays the notes. The ground collapses around them, but if she plays the final note (a B-flat) correctly they’ll go free. And if she plays it incorrectly, “we’ll all be flat.”

I don’t know if it’s too late for the Sooners, but I know there is a lot of football to be played. And it’s being played in a time when we have a new playoff structure and committee that no one can say for certain how they will determine who makes it in. You may be one of those people with the pitch forks out that wants to go after the coaches, or the players, or even folks like myself who still hold out hope for the Sooners and that’s fine. You probably stopped reading this long ago. But I for one still believe this is good team and believe there is enough unknown to hope. It may be a small amount of hope, but not one person here can honestly say they believed the Sooners would be in the Sugar Bowl, much less win it, after the loss in Waco last year.

My message to the Sooners, just keep playing and make sure you hit the right note from here on out. My message to the fans…enjoy the season regardless! Football is a great sport and it gives us great memories and wonderful times to spend time to spend with friends and families.

Not gonna lie, I’m particularly proud of my picture selection for this one.

  • Jordan Esco says:

And god love ya, K. I wish, truly wish, I could be more like this as a fan. Unfortunately, I’m just not wired that way. But I respect the hell out of you for being the eternal optimist.

  • Billy says:

The Sooners are out. Not just because we have lost two games, but because of how we are playing.

    • Super Keith says:

Look at last year, the same could be said at about this point in the season.

Nothing is certain, and I seriously doubt we’ve seen the peak of what this team can do. It’s up to the players to want it though.

  • Matthew says:

They’re out. Now we can just sit back and enjoy the season like you K. OU has two losses like almost every year now and hopefully they can pull off the upset when they shouldn’t. Either way, the SEC gets two teams in unless FSU goes undefeated and ND and either Michigan State, Ohio State, and Oregon all have 1 loss.

  • Bryan says:

Two loss LSU made it to the BCS championship game in 2007 so there is definitely a chance, however slim it is. Regardless, I sure hope the team keeps up the charge and we win out. We saw last year how you can take what looks like a disappointing 2-loss season and turn it into something special that can be helpful in the future, especially with recruiting. It doesn’t look like it was enough for this year but if we continue to play competitively maybe we can get another good springboard into next season and try again. Even if you can’t muster up enough hope for this year you can for the next, and as much as my brain is telling me I’ll just be disappointed again I can’t help it. My team, my school, etc. wouldn’t matter to me as much if I didn’t always keep hoping.

    • Matthew says:

The 2007 year had 1 undefeated team in Hawaii who played nobody and therefore was ranked 10th. It also had 2 P5 teams who only had 1 loss (Ohio State who was 1st place) and KU (who just lost to Missouri and didn’t make the CCG) and was ranked 8th because of that and the fact they didn’t play anyone either. Everyone else had at least 2 losses. I don’t see that scenario happening this year where almost everyone has 2 losses.

  • Ed Cotter says:

Crazy things would have to happen for OU to get back into it. At this point OU needs to regroup during this bye week and look to finish off this season with a flurry. A very good bowl is still in play, as well as an outside chance at a conference championship. Still lots of football left and a chance for guys to improve their game to help the team finish out this year on a high note and for the underclassmen to get ready to help this team in the future.

  • Big Higg says:

At this point I’m not sure I would want us in the playoffs. Js.

  • Sooner Ray says:

We are a solid safety and another good receiver away from being a playoff team……that close.

    • F1at1ined says:

Agree. I would probably add ‘another formation that isn’t the pistol formation’ lol

  • nicjams says:

Barring every team having two losses by the end of the year (highly unlikely), the Sooners are out. OU still have a somewhat reasonable chance to win the Big 12… That’s what I’m rooting for.

  • ratman says:

We are out! I just hope we beat Iowa State.

  • Wilson says:

Good commentary….yes I too love football. Like stated in your commentary, we are in a different era and must throw away the “old regime” of picking National Champion worthy teams, until proven otherwise by the committee. That being said, there are a lot of teams out there that don’t pass the “smell test” and we are getting dangerously close to the “spoiled” category. The Big 12 is full of parity this year and it is possible to have multiple teams with 2 losses at the top of the league. OU has to play and coach every game like it is their last. But regardless of the outcome, I am going to enjoy watching this (NFL feeling) college season play out. We are only mid season and I am not ready to jump off the boat yet (never have anyway). Question: Do you drink the kool aide, while pumping the sunshine on back of the rainbow chasing unicorn? Couldn’t find anything on eHow.

  • F1at1ined says:

Win or lose, I will always cheer on my Sooners. I am usually a glass half full fan, but in this instance, I don’t see us deserving of a place in the top four as being one of the four best teams playing the best football. Unless we post some dominating wins, we just don’t have the swagger of a championship team. I also vehemently believe without a Championship game, its even harder for a Big 12 team to get in unless it is a convincing and worthy Conference champ. I feel the ideal scenario would be to end up with four power conferences, and the four Conference champs go to the playoffs.

    • OohRah Mama says:

What about an eight team playoff?

      • F1at1ined says:

Well, my reckoning is the top 8 teams are going to be playing in the four conference championship games, so I guess those games would be the quarter finals, so to speak lol

  • hemisooner says:

They are done but not done losing. Baylor loss and maybe taco tech. Another 9-3 season or 8-4 and a trip to the alamo bowl. 1. TCU 2 Baylor 3 KSU 4 WVU 5 OU 6 Texas 7 OSU 8 tech 9 ISU 10 Kansas..5th place for a team that was projected to win the conference is very disappointing

    • F1at1ined says:

I don’t see us losing to Tech. Baylor should rip us apart. I hope our offense can keep pace. Baylor is the lone conference team left that we could realistically expect to lose.

      • Sooner Ray says:

I never “expect” to lose, not optimistic right now but I always expect a win.

      • hemisooner says:

Tech isnt a gimmie. We have lost 4 out of 5 at their place and with OU defense playing like they are. I would not count that as a for sure win. Heck i wouldnt count ISU as a gimmie. Baylor will run up and down the field with mike stoops coached defense.

    • CS says:

We are going to win out! You will see, for a young team its about learning to win. For our team this year, it especially applies, since they have been playing not to lose. Now, they are going to throw caution to the wind and come out swinging.

      • hemisooner says:

I hope im wrong but this team is too inexperience in the secondary and at wr. Too many holes

      • disqus_uj44WuVjt2 says:

A team playing not to lose is coming from our EXPERIENCED coaches who call each and every play!!!!

    • tfb_fortyseven says:

Hemi: That’s a good lead in to start the typical coach bashing, which is what I’m good at! But, I ain’t gonna dwell other than to say the head coach is overpaid for the product he creates.

  • Super K says:

I know most of y’all disagree with most of what I wrote above. Some of you might even want to shoot me but I appreciate y’all being so civil in the comments section! I will have play breakdowns this week to kind of illustrate some issues. Again, thanks y’all!

    • hemisooner says:

From what i saw, i thought alexander and evans didnt play very well. And safeties didnt play well either. Of course that’s a season trend. I cant remember a time in the stoops era were our safeties have been this bad.

      • Super K says:

At first glance I felt it was some of the same issues with Dom and Evans. Dom always in position but is too timid at times and certainly seems to like the physical makeup to be an ILB. Evans is occasionally in the run position or is overly aggressive. Also, he’s got great athleticism but is still underdeveloped from a physical perspective. Evans looks like he’ll get there, he’s just young. Either way it was hard to watch our ILBs getting taken for a ride for 7-8 yards by a 200 lb back up RB. The safety issue is a little more nuanced than people are recognizing IMO. I’ll try to go into that a little this week.

        • hemisooner says:

I know the safeties have a lot reads but the safeties haven’t made many plays. Thomas has been dreadful and hard to watch. Kid doesn’t have a chance when has to cover somebody. Too stiff and slow. Hayes is average. We need to recruit quicker twitch safeties. I feel since this season is about done we need to play the younger guys to see what they can do (parker or byrd). This is off topic but i see the kid from midwest city like a clone of thomas (big kid but kind of stiff in the hips and not explosive).

          • Super K says:

I’m not as high on the kid from MW city as other folks are. But one of things I will give him is he has great straight line speed…something Thomas doesn’t have. People assume you don’t need great speed at FS because you’re protected by the coverage call for the most part. But if you want to be a great play maker back there…speed/length is a quality that is very valuable. You’ve got to be able to cover ground.

          • hemisooner says:

Super K, i respect your opinion but his first couple of step are not explosive at all. And his change of direction is below average.

          • Super K says:

            Who are you referring to?

          • hemisooner says:

Talking about will from midwest city, super K.

          • Super K says:

yeah I agree with you…I’m not sold on him. Just was saying that he does have some qualities like overall speed and length. But he’s not a safety I would recruit. But I certainly wish him well.

        • disqus_uj44WuVjt2 says:

and if evans gets there and is great he will be gone after next year.

      • Double G says:

I think the biggest thing I’ve noticed with our linebackers (and some of the other young players in the secondary) is that once they make contact they stop driving their legs. Evans isn’t as bad about it as Alexander is, but overall if you want to stop someone from running through your tackle and stop yourself from getting dragged for three to four yards after initial contact, you have to drive your legs through the tackle.

        • disqus_uj44WuVjt2 says:

Plus you have to take their legs away. Tackling above the waist will not get the job done most of the time!

        • hemisooner says:

They all put their head down. Head up and drive thru and grab behind the knee.

    • Sooner Ray says:

Ammo is way too expensive right now to be shooting at you K. 🙂

  • Docknoss says:

Well let’s hope it gets better for a recruiting stand point but I wouldn’t mind losing bad enough this season. To get some coaching changes done… Isn’t Mike Stoops specialty the Secondary? How can this be? But then again how can an OC that won a NC call run plays when it’s that obvious? Bobs got be decisions to make after this season.

  • soonerinks says:

At the start of the season I was figuring we would probably lose 3 games (Baylor, KSU, Tech). Then about 3 weeks ago I got stinking drunk on the Kool-Aid and thought we would go undefeated and win a NC. Hangovers are hell. We will bounce back!

  • pitbull17 says:

Um, OU is out, love the optimism but I don’t see a way where they work their way back in. OU has really got to work Heuple and his schizophrenic play calling. I just don’t understand how he can call something that works perfectly one series and abandon it the next. They really need to get back to being more aggressive on D. They also have to fix Honeycutt. As bad as it was yesterday that game should have been a W.

    • Sooner Ray says:

Honey will be fine, I’m more concerned about fixing our third and short problem even though it’s just been in a couple games. You should never have to ask a kicker to win a game for you when you have dominated in the stats.

      • pitbull17 says:

I’m sure he will, it’s just a matter of getting his plant foot a little further from the ball. There are a few things on offense that need to be fixed.

        • Sooner Ray says:

Yeah pitbull I noticed his foot came in close, he told Stoops he was rushing it, makes sense after having a point blocked and already missing one earlier. Kickers are a different breed and things get stuck in their head. We’ve got some young players on both sides of the ball who are just now starting to come around to the D1 level of play, sucks we couldn’t just get some lucky plays now and then.

  • Kuzi says:

I think that we are the longest of longshots. Having said that, the rest of this year is not wasted time. It is a chance to watch some guys develop, get some young guys a little taste of college football, and see some of the great Sooners (like Hunnicutt) for the last time.

I want to see Trevor continue to mature. If OU has any chance for the rest of this year and going into next year, he MUST get better. He was good last Saturday, but he must be better. This especially is in regards to decision making and identifying alignments/coverages.

I want to see this defense get back to being aggressive. I am sick and tired of playing this soft, don’t-wanna-get-beat-deep defense. MAKE THEM EARN IT!!! Don’t line up with ONLY 3 players within 5 yards of the line of scrimmage. Get the LBs up there and at least make them think you are coming. Challenge WRs, stop giving huge cushions and bailing out. Play to win!

I want to see young o-linemen get into the game. We have a lot of seniors on this o-line, and we need some of the youngsters to see live bullets at some point this year so that we can count on them next year. I don’t care if DGB comes in and plays like Megatron… if you don’t block people up front, you are not going to move the ball.

  • connie usa says:

Sad to say, but OU is out. No way they jump into the Final 4.

    • Sooner Ray says:

Most likely correct connie but I remember being let down last year but after we beat okie lite and bama, we enjoyed the off season. We just have to look for the bright spots from here on out.

      • connie usa says:

Ray; I’m trying, but I’m seriously depressed over yesterdays game. They sucked a lot of life out of me. Thanks for making me realize that we can still end up with a good record, and a good bowl game.

        • EasTex says:

Hang on connie, the Sooners have given us many memories over the decades, some exhilarating…others soul crushing.
If you saw this play live(as I did) in the “Game Of The Century” between #1 Nebraska and #2 OU you will know what it is to feel your chest crushed from agony.

          • connie usa says:

Eas; I didn’t see it live, but did on TV. I’m an 85 grad, so I grew up with Switzer. Luckily, I’ve seen more “good days”, than “bad days”. BUT, the bad days really sting. In college, a few drinks and the pain went away, NOW, I feel like crap for a week.

          • EasTex says:

I drove down from Wichita for that game. The drive back was torture, with all the celebrating Nebbish fans on the road with me.
Yes ma’am, the Sooners have given us so many good memories and I expect more to come.
Whenever I feel like crap, all I have to do is look at my grandbabies pictures or call them up, and I feel much better. 🙂

          • connie usa says:

            Y’all are my Sooner Family!!!!
Without you guys, my sadness would last longer.
As the saying goes, misery loves company!!!

  • EasTex says:

Super K, you are technically correct, but the chances are remote at this point with two losses.
I just want them to win out and have the best season possible, who knows we could have another exciting bowl victory as 17 point dogs again. More than anything I want to see the players and coaches approach the remaining 5-6 games as though the universe is at stake.
I’m emotionally invested enough to feel sickened by any loss and stewed in silence about woulda/coulda/shoulda of this game, time to move on and finish the season strong.

  • Bob Edwards says:

While I agree that we are still mathematically in the hunt, for all practical purposes we are out. Having said that, I like the players on this team and will continue to root for them because they are my Sooners. I will also call for the coaches to start earning those large salaries. Poor execution very well describes what I see in the coaching staff. I think we are down to one timeout against Iowa State and the game hasn’t even started yet. Our clock management is just one example of how the coaching staff is not executing well. That sloppiness flows over into the players. In K-State you saw a disciplined focused football team, no way did they have more talent than we have, but they were far better prepared for that game than we were. If we were as prepared as they were, we would not have lost that game.

  • Exiled In Ohio says:

K, you are exactly right! Saturday is in the past and the team (or those on this site) can’t change it. But they can control how they react to it and determine the future. I’m going to be rooting for 11-2 and a great bowl game. If by some miracle it’s a playoff, outstanding! If not, I’ll be screaming for a decisive win in the bowl. Boomer Sooner!

  • Double G says:

First time posting on here since I just found this website a few months ago (and it’s one of the best ones out there btw) so you take what I have to say however you want. I just felt I needed to remind some folks of a few things that we all knew going into the season, but seem to have forgotten thanks to all of the hype after OUr victory in the Sugar Bowl.
1.) We all knew the defensive secondary was going to be a question mark with Aaron Colvin and Gabe Lynn graduating.
2.) We all knew that the wide receivers were going to be a question mark with Jalen Saunders, Lacoltan Bester, and Jaz Reynolds graduating.
3.) We were all skeptical that what we saw in the Sugar Bowl from Knight was really what he was going to be to start the year.
4.) We all knew we had unproven players coming in at running back since all three of our running backs who saw meaningful time last year graduated.
5.) We all knew (or at least should have thought) there were going to be some growing pains on the O-line with Gabe Ikard and Bronson Irwin graduating.
6.) And we all should have been skeptical of what we saw out of Josh Heupel as an offensive coordinator in the Sugar Bowl because our offense never looked that explosive all year last year.
So why say these things since I’m sure some of you are thinking “well duh Double G, tell me something I don’t know”? I say them because
1.) In spite of losing Aaron Colvin and Gabe Lynn, our secondary managed to contain Tyler Lockett and keep him under 100 yds receiving after he torched us last year to the tune of 278 yds on 12 passes for 3 TDs and another 162 yds on special teams. A secondary that’s only returning starters playing the same positions from last year are Quentin Hayes (who wasn’t covering Lockett) and Zach Sanchez (playing only his second season and recovering from a shoulder injury early in the year). So is the secondary perfect? No, and in my opinion Ahmad Thomas needs to figure things out soon or get off the field for as many times as I’ve seen him get fooled or juked out of his shorts. I know he’s learning, but I think Hatari Byrd could do just as well as he is, if not better considering I believe Hatari is a better tackler. But for as bad as things can be when you’re breaking in a new secondary they’ve played pretty dang well so far this season.
2.) We all like to gripe about he receivers and Lord knows I have at times, but considering that the only guy coming back with experience is Sterling I think we have expected too much out of them at times. The only guys who saw the field last year as part of the second rotation (at least to my knowledge) are Durron Neal (who’s only gotten better as the season has gone on) and Derrick Woods (who’s out with an injury). We were really so naïve to think that it wouldn’t take some time for those guys to find a game time rhythm with Knight? I would hope not. Doesn’t mean that eight games into the season someone shouldn’t have emerged by now, but considering that Norvell has only let someone besides KJ Young see meaningful time out on the field in two games so far this year outside of the K State game, I think those younger guys are doing pretty well stepping up. Knight threw passes to 8 different players yesterday and had TD passes to two other people not named Sterling Shepard. Give them a little more time and an unrestricted playbook and I believe that things will turn around.
3.) Knight hasn’t been as good as I expected to him to be at this point in the year, but he had a hell of a game yesterday minus that interception. He bounced back like Super K said and outside of one bad decision did what he’s needed to all year – play fearless and to win the game instead of to live up to our expectations. He has a few more games like he did yesterday and we have a great chance of winning out the rest of the season as long as he isn’t handcuffed by the coaches.
4.) Our running backs have been great from the start of the season, but they continue to only get better each game. Think about that for a minute, they’re only getting better and Ford isn’t even out there right now. Why do I say this? Because yesterday I saw Alex Ross (a guy a lot of us thought had no vision) find the cut back lanes JY has been pointing out in Trench Warfare and have the best day of his career as a running back and a 42 yard run that was not on a kickoff return. If he can continue to see the holes the O-line is creating and Perine continues to leave chunks of defenders in his cleats, this running game is going to be a nightmare by the time the post season comes around.
5.) Our O-line has done well, but hasn’t dominated in the trenches like we expected them to. However, they haven’t sucked either. A true freshman running back had 242 yards rushing in a game this year (something that hadn’t been done since 2004) and we’re still averaging 5.1 yards per carry. That’s only .1 yards worse than last year and we still have five games to go in this season, plus the post season. How many teams that have had to replace all of their running backs in a season can say that? Probably none.
6.) This one is probably going to get me thrown from the rafters, but I’m going to say it anyway . . . when Josh Heupel doesn’t handicap his offense, the man calls a hell of a game. The first seven games this season, the coaches handicapped the offense and we played not to lose. Yesterday, our offense and it’s co-coordinator called plays to win the game and almost did despite leaving 14 points out on the field and spotting our opponent 7. If that trend continues (the aggressive play calling), I believe this offense will be steam rolling people by the time the season is over.
The only real complaint I have after yesterday is that on the defensive side of the ball we have been playing not to lose instead of playing to win. We have been afraid of mobile quarterbacks (TCU’s Boykin, Texas’s Swoopes to an extent, and KSU’s Waters) and haven’t been attacking the defensive line of scrimmage like we all believe we should be this season. Mike Stoops is a great DC, but in my opinion (which doesn’t mean much), he needs to forget about what Johnny Manziel did to us in the Cotton Bowl. Johnny Manziel is a one in a million player and we will not be facing a dual threat QB like that again while Mike is a DC at OU. Mike needs to unleash the defensive front seven while playing more man in the backend (like Super K has been saying) and trust that his players are better than the wide receivers on the other side of the ball. Nobody else has a DGB and a Baker Mayfield on their practice squad to train their DBs like we do and I for one would rather go down in a blaze of glory like TCU did when they lost to Baylor by contesting every yard/catch than to be too timid for fear of the big play and lose another game by playing scared, conservative, or whatever you want to call it. The statement on the defensive side of the ball needs to be “we’re better than you and we’re going to prove it”. Torrance Marshall had that attitude when they faced FSU in the NC in 2000 when he told Chris Weinke that he had stolen Josh Heupel’s Heisman trophy and that he was going to prove it. We played fearless that game and we won. We need to start doing that again because at the end of the day football is a war, the opposing team is your enemy, and when you’re in a fight the only way to win is to hit the other guy as hard as you can with everything you have. You have to attack, always be thinking of how to continue to attack, and never stop attacking if you can help it. If you don’t, you’re going to lose and lost often.
Anyway, now that I got that off my chest I’m going to hop down from my soapbox. If you read my entire post, thanks for listening. Feel free to disagree as much as you want. And Super K, don’t stop believing (yes, that is a Journey reference), we need optimists like you around to help heal the wounds after losses like yesterday. I know your post certainly helped me feel better!

Well said and nothing but the truth. You should ask for your comment to be moved to the Original Posters section as it is worthy.

We believe these things because if we don’t go along with the crimson glass people we will be shouted down. After all we recruit the best 3* that are better than anyone’s 5* and our coaches coach those 3* into 5+++++*. We also have the crimson glass reporters and writers that obviously have no idea but they are believed anyway.

      • disqus_uj44WuVjt2 says:

I forgot to read your ENTIRE post, but you start sounding like a Crimson Glass person in the latter half of the post. I HOPE what you say is true but I will have to see it before I agree with it!

What you negative nellies don’t seem to comprehend is that fact that there is a way to go about having a conversation without being douchebags. Figure out how to do that, then come back, apologize, and then we can start some sort of dialogue….or don’t and go back to landthieves

          • OohRah Mama says:

One can also be a terrific poster who has great things to contribute without calling others douchebags, dear. Just sayin’.

          • boomersooner says:

great point. just gets a little old when all they do is attack and probly aren’t even OU fans. this site used to have a great roster of sincere, knowledgeable, friendly posters, but has steadily gone downhill. just love when there is discussion and not bashing of coaches, players and posters without anything to add to the conversation….and i think i’ve added plenty to plenty of conversations, just wanna get this nipped in the bud and no, ignoring has never worked

    • paganpink says:

This IS EXACTLY how I view it. And aside from the inexplicable collapse of Hunnicutt we had this game won. And I was wrong about Alex Ross never being an all purpose running back, in my mind, because I forgot just how much improvement some of these freshmen players will show in their first year on the field. Not to mention their second and third years if they are given good coaching. Sometimes the “light just comes on” for players and fans both! And I HATE Journey, heh heh

    • hOUligan says:

Preach it. We talked all off-season about these very things and what had to happen for this team to be a play-off team. And, unfortunately, things have not unfolded as quickly as hoped. But much is due to youth and inexperience. The team has the opportunity to learn and to fight now. TK, the WRs, the RBs, the DBs, all are getting better and could be lethal down the stretch IF OUr coordinators let them play aggressive. It’s the passivity of the coordinators/HC that has hampered this team as much as anything. Take off the training wheels and let the players loose. Let TK run, play the inexperienced but talented WRs, let the defense do what it does best, attack. We’ll be OK and set the team up for more success in the future.

  • Super Keith says:

If OU can get hot, and win out from here, I think it’s still a possibility. Unfortunately, it’s no longer up to OU. Even with one loss, we could still control our own fate…with two losses, we’re going to need help. Even with a 10-2 record, we’re going to need teams to fall, and do so in a timely manner.

It’s an uphill climb, but having watched many years of college football, I can say, without doubt, that a lot will change between now and the end.

  • Jared Tyra says:

The Sooners will start playing Sooner football real soon, I have a strong feeling there. On a much brighter note, let this guy be a good distraction to all of us diehard fans.

  • Tulsa Terry says:

My hope is the Sooners improve late season like last year and gain a Big 6 Bowl. A quality SEC opponent could again be our fate. A surprising win could set us up for a realistic playoff run in 2015. The favorable schedule had me drinking the kool aid this year but next year always seemed more plausible. I’d rather have a squad capable of winning any game anywhere than a team with a favorable schedule.

    • Cush Creekmont says:

Next year will have a much less experienced O-line. The last time we had really good returning skill players (2009), the O-line made us a Sun Bowl team.

  • SoonerFan11 says:

Great write up…. The logic used has some substance. K state has to slip up twice and we need to handle business.

  • Jeremy Phillips says:

I fully expect, with all the pressure off now, that this team will practice & play with a higher level of focus.. I think we win out with a few blowouts even. But i don’t think we get much higher than 8 or 10 in the end..

  • CDC says:

Great write up, but you don’t think Keith Ford counts as a major injury? I’ll go ahead and volunteer to be the crazy guy who says if Ford doesn’t get hurt the Sooners are undefeated and ranked number 1 in the country right now.

    • lovethemsooners says:

Not unless he can play defense too. Our running game isn’t our biggest weakness right now. It’s the play calling and a defense that can’t stop a nose bleed.

      • CDC says:

Less 3 and outs by our offense would make our defense a lot more potent. The two losses have been super close and I truly think Ford would have tipped the scales.

Edit: To further my point, think about the 3 and outs where Ross was in and we were all scratching our heads. Now I admit he ran better during the KSU game, but still, imagine if it had been Ford running the ball, or Perine as the second back running it.

    • hOUligan says:

Get your point re: Ford out = major injury and could probably have made a difference in OUr offense, but a lot more going on. TK inconsistent, lack of WR development, D not performing. A team is more than 1 guy. Georgia loses a Heisman candidate, Gurley, and plugs in a frosh, Chubb, and keeps churning. The oline has been good but not the dominant line we believed it to be. This team is a good team, but not a championship team.

      • CDC says:

I agree with what you are saying, but consider both losses were by a combined 5 points. I think with Ford in we have at least one more scoring drive per each game and a few more first downs which takes stress off of many of the other things you mention. I totally could be wrong here. I am anxious to see him back in action and see what kind of difference he makes. He is definitely a playmaker.

  • HoustonChiver says:

If the Sooners are out then Heupul is out. How can we continue to burn all of our timeouts halfway through the 4th quarter in close games?

  • OUhound says:

Pretty sure that any two loss team that does not carry the moniker known as SEC is out of the playoff picture. It would take a miracle.

    • Gary Robbins says:

Probably right. Three things that bug me the most.
      1. Time out management, is this a current year problem or carryover?
      2. Offensive line inability to get a one yard gain on the goal line.
      3. Our pass rating defense (103rd in the country).
All are correctable and we have 2 weeks to work on it. Hope OU has a better result in the next 3 games after a bye (1-2 record). I will wait till after @Iowa State, Baylor at home, @Texas Tech.

  • Jared William Reininger says:

Great read K! Never disappointed. I gotta say I agree with part and disagree with part, as it stands now at least. But if we all agreed with what you wrote then there wouldn’t be any comments besides amen, or agreed, or here here (for any of those colonial types around here).

My thing is we haven’t had an impressive win at this point. If we find our identity and start destroying people, maybe we can. I just don’t see how we can at this point.

Defensively I don’t know what we are. And it has got so complicated that our players can’t succeed in it apparently. And you have players trying to do everything but what they are great at. Striker seemed to be playing coverage a lot against KSU ( I only watched the game in person so I haven’t had a chance to go back and watch it again) and striker is known for making QBs quiver in fear because he can rush so hard. I heard someone say, “Well our players have been in the system another year, why wouldn’t we make it more complicated?” BECAUSE complicated doesn’t mean better. K.I.S.S. I never understood that rationale and never will. I understand trying to match a scheme or out scheme the offense etc. but right now we are out scheming ourselves on defense.

Offensively, I mean we put up 500 yards I think it was against KSU, but I can’t be the only one to feel like it was the ugliest 500 yard performance I have ever seen. And on that last goal line drive, as I am sure JY will illustrate, 9 in the box, bring neal over, you just made 10 in the box, and we run right up the middle……..I mean I felt like I was at the Baylor game last year. And I thought about this, I don’t like Josh Heupel, not one bit, if that makes me “one of those sooner fans” then so be it. I thought his play calling was medicore most of the game and terrible at the end in the redzone. But I thought about this, maybe Norvell being Co-Coordinator is taking him away from developing our WRs. I love Norvell but it seems like not only has our QB development fallen off, but our WR development has too.

My point is these coaches have got to take a good hard look at what they are doing and realize it isn’t going to get them back into competition anytime soon. If they want to go to a decent bowl game and run the rest of the table, or maybe even get to the playoffs, they have to do what they do best and they have to win by large margins.

    • boomersooner says:

Good points. Thanks for having a conversation and not being one of those “I think I’m john madden and know it all so I’ll be a doucher” guys. I’m glad we’re back to at least some sort of rush. May not blitz like we want or mike used to love but anything is better than the “pro bowl looking non rush stand up and wait to get torched” d we’ve been playing. It just seems that hunger that monty and bedes brought in ain’t there right now and also I think that mike must not like his secondary so he won’t blitz and leave em on an island but to me when you blitz its obviously less time you have to cover. And yeah I agree that in game if tk loses a little confidence in game you should be able to calm him down and get it back

  • Bluegrass Sooner says:

As a Sooner fan since the late 70’s I have lived and died the life of a fan each game day for a long time. Last Saturday was one of the most gut wrenching games I have had to deal with in a very long time. I was happy with the offense, even in spite of a couple of mistakes. I was glad to see us diversify through most of the game (except for being 1st and goal in the 4th quarter). It was nice to see us change things and see some success. I was disappointed to see the defense not being as aggressive as we all loved seeing them early in the year, but they didn’t play too bad overall. K State was averaging over 40 points a game coming into the game and you take away the pick 6 and about three other big plays and K State scores less than 20. The most difficult part of the day for me was to see Honeycutt struggle so much, knowing he has been so good for his career. What are the odds of him missing three VERY makeable kicks? We played good enough to win, but just missed about one or two plays that would have made the difference. This same sentence applies to the TCU game as well.

My frustration with this team is to see it come so close to winning a couple of games against very good teams in spite of struggling themselves. I hope to see our Sooners show their toughness, integrity, and dedication by reacting to this extremely difficult time with a continued determination to keep improving, to take care of their business and not worry about what happens around them.

One of my favorite quotes is, “Sports is life with the volume turned up.” I know in sports the highs are a little higher and the lows a little lower. We are definitely in a low point as fans, but there are higher times on the way.

  • Cush Creekmont says:

Simple answer to the posited question – Yes.

The Big 12 will only have a final four rep if it is a 1-loss team (KSU, Baylor, TCU have a “chance” – not a good one)

As for OUr team and OUr season, the best OU can get would be a share of a Big 12 crown – that requires winning out AND losses by TCU, WV, and TWO by KSU. I actually think the loses listed have a high probability. Winning out will require a better D than has been displayed.

  • Jake says:

Appreciate the optimism. But if you think there’s a chance for the playoffs I can’t help but laugh.

Not to say that there aren’t a lot of good things to come out of this season. Some wins, some learning, get some experience. That’s all good stuff, but playoffs? Nope.

  • Jeremy Phillips says:

Really don’t want to agree with this article… However, LSU made a title game & won it all with 2 losses based on the point, they didn’t lose a game in regulation.. As disappointed as all of us are, we are 2 pick 6’s from being 7-0 & firmly in the top 4 right now.. Stranger things have happened…

  • BigJoeBrown says:

It’s not that I think they are out…but I just don’t think they deserve it. IMO, That is unless we see a complete football team, 4 quarters against a non-cupcake team. It seems like the past 4 games have just been ugly. I mean Yes, we got some victorious but they really haven’t been convincing. If OU were to make it to the playoff, I’d want them to be playing in prime form…consistent offense, stout defense, limited mental mistakes, those are things we just aren’t seeing.

  • Stephen Dale says:

YES…………..the Sooners are out and all seasonal goals lost…except to get to a major bowl game and that isn’t happening either. Figure this team finishes 7-5 and plays in the Tidy Bowl in Shreveport in mid December. OU does win the ‘most disappointing D-1 team award for 2014’ however and adds that trophy to its collection.

  • Perry Dickey says:

This season was going to be to me, “The season Ahmad Thomas lost”, until it became, “The season the preacher cussed, (Knights mouthing, #uck, in the Texas game)”. For whatever reason after the first bye this team hasn’t played anywhere near deserving of hope for the playoffs. period

  • Dana Rogers says:

So before you all blast me for being the sunshine pumping, kool-aid drinking, unicorn riding, rainbow chaser…here me out. No Super K, I won’t – ain’t even readin the rest of your write – I just love watchin the Sooners too…
