Quick #HotSportsTake On ‘Stoops To Florida’

Even before the final gun had sounded Saturday night in Gainesville and the embarrassment of what has defined the Will Muschamp era, people were already speculating about the oft-rumored ‘Bob Stoops to Florida’ talk that was sure to come. Yours truly was just as guilty

And while we can debate back-and-forth all day long about whether Florida would even offer (operating under the IMO more than fair assumption it’s a case of ‘when’ not ‘if’ Florida fires Muschamp), or whether Stoops would even consider, or yada, yada, yada.

But one popular theory I’ve seen pushed by some is that Stoops probably wouldn’t be that high on Florida’s wish list (which I find to be patently ridiculous, but I’m gonna power thru regardless) because it’s their offense that’s broken, not their defense. And that’s true, in terms of the O vs. D argument. However, spend a minute or two and think about what OU has come to be known for under Bob.

Hint, it’s not defense.

OU’s prominence from a national perspective is much more focused on the offensive side of the ball than it is defensive. So this theory that Florida wouldn’t be interested in Stoops is a pretty flawed one, in my opinion. In fact, I’d argue it would make him an even more highly sought after “potential” candidate. You already have the winning and his obvious connection/history to the program, but now you have a guy who is a “defensive coach” yet earned (and deservedly so I might add) the reputation of also having prolific offenses. I mean how is that not the best case scenario for a Florida AD to sell to his fan base?

Again, I’m not saying he will go. And I’m sure as hell not saying I want him to go. This is strictly about shooting down this one particular theory of why some seem to believe he wouldn’t even really be considered.

If he does go, can he take Heupel with him please!

All I will say is the “fire bob stoops” guys need to quit pretending to be ou fans and put on some orange and black. Because if you (fans) want stoops gone, be ready for mediocrity. If you think 10 wins is “mediocre” then what is 7 or 8? And playing bowl games before Christmas?

    I’m done

I’ll take 10-2 with a chance to make it over the hump every year. Couple that with running a clean program and that’s the guy you want at your school. I recognize that at some point Bob goes, whether to try a new school or the nfl, but it will be a crap-shoot trying to improve on his record. Last I saw, only Urban had a higher win % among active fbs coaches.

Exactly and these days you can’t go 10-12 years between great eras. When stoops does finally leave or retire, I only hope we find a guy who can continue what bob has built. There’s so many bad hires out there every year.

Amen. It’s crazy talk, just crazy. I think it’s mostly from entitled youth who don’t necessarily remember or see big picture.

The grass is usually greener on the other side of the fence because there is a sewer leak! As frustrating as the past few weeks have been, we do have hope and confidence that Coach Stoops is going to have our Sooners competing for conference and national championships year in and year out.

I’m not saying in any way that I feel that Bob should be fired. However, if he were to take another job or something, why is it a given that OU wouldn’t be able to hire someone else as capable as Bob? There are quite a few coaches out there that would be able to provide at least the same results as Stoops with the history and resources that OU has. Would OU be able to hire one? Who knows. As a Sooner fan, I would like to believe the program is at a level we would though.

      • Zack says:

But don’t you think Florida, USC, Michigan and notre dame have similar history with other similar resources? They’ve missed on guys. We missed on guys after switzer.

        • Kdubracing says:

I’m not saying it wouldn’t happen, but in the situation OU is in right now, it’s definitely not a foregone conclusion. Usually when teams lose their coach, the program is in a downward spiral. OU isn’t in a downward spiral, more a plateau.

          • Herman Bubbert says:

Sixteen years is a LONG time in the coaching business, and Stoops won’t be here forever. In fact, I’d wager that this era is wrapping up. Whether it’s this year, next year, too soon to tell. It’ll be OK. OU football was great before Bob Stoops, and it’ll be great again when he leaves.

Stoops won’t leave for any other college program…it would be a lateral
Move at best and a new beginning and he said he didn’t want to coach into his late years like paterno, Bowden…now…if the Cowboys come calling…maybe

    • CNCSOONER says:

Stoops wont go to the Cowboys this year due to Garrett lighting it up and has the Cowboys on the verge of making a run at a Super Bowl title.

  • Will Narramore says:

If and its a big if Stoops were to leave, who do you think they would look at for a head coach? Do they just promote Stoops? Briles? Patterson?

    • SoonerfanTU says:

Briles is not coming to OU. Patterson probably wouldn’t either, and why would anybody want him? He is a whiny baby.

  • Ryan says:

Please go Bob you’ve become stagnant and satisfied. For those saying the next coach won’t bring us back to dominance quickly, that’s bull. Gus Malzahn at Auburn for example had them in the title game in his first year. Oh and this is OKLAHOMA. It’s very possible to go back with a young and energetic coach.
