TaShawn Thomas Officially Cleared

In case you missed it, late(ish) Saturday night news finally broke that TaShawn Thomas had been officially cleared by the NCAA.

Thomas had transferred from Houston after the Cougars made a coaching change (ironically enough to former OU head coach, Kelvin Sampson) and had been waiting for some time on word from the NCAA regarding his request.

This is huge news for an OU team already ranked in the Top 25 and one who several national analysts have said could be a potential Final Four team with Thomas.

The Sooners officially open their season on Sunday (2:00 pm, FSSW) against Southeastern Louisiana. Thomas is expected to be in the starting lineup.

    Awesome news!

Great news. This team is going to be something to watch

  • SamSooner says:

Okay: so you have playerr not on scholarship denied and a player on scholarship approved. Things that make you go hmmm?

  • SoonerfanTU says:

This is really important. I think OU was going to struggle some without him, b/c it was going to leave us with only 3 scholarship post guys, one of which is a true freshman, and the other of which just really isn’t very good.

Seems everybody is pretty much looking at OU as a competitor this year. I would have loved to have flown under the radar screen for awhile though. I have not seen so much excitement since Griffith was eating up the competition. Should be a really fun season.

May try to watch some of that game since it’s snowing outside anyway.

An excellent boost to an already intriguing Sooners lineup. Very excited to see how this Sooners team shapes up to the perennial Big 12 basketball powerhouses. Thomas is a huge add and its nice to finally benefit from a NCAA ruling lol

Absolutely. We just added a post that can SCORE and rebound. Will take a lot of pressure off Spangler and will allow McNeese to redshirt. We just got a whole lot better.

  • Jared Tyra says:

I don’t want to sound crazy but getting Thomas for the season to me spells doom for Kansas’ streak of regular season Big 12 titles. I was already thinking we might shock the world and take it from them before Tashawn was cleared but now…

It will take a lot for KU to be dethroned in my humble opinion. They are extremely talented as usual and have a great coach to boot. Any team relying on freshman will struggle early but that talent has the potential to be very overwhelming.

      • Jared Tyra says:

Oh for sure; I still believe it would be a major upset for the good guys to edge out Kansas as strong as the conference is. However, if there was ever a season for Kansas to slip, it would be the one immediately after the departure of Wiggins and Embiid.

I’m not sure I’m ready to agree fully, but adding Thomas to the team I watched today in the opener….could be on to something!

      • Jared Tyra says:

When you fix the only perceived weakness, good/great/excellent things are bound to occur. And Thomas I’m sure will get it going, I bet he thought he wasn’t playing tonight up until about twenty hours ago.

        • Super Keith says:

I had all but given up hope the NCAA would clear him in time to play. I figured the best case scenario was going to be getting him in time for the tournament (which could have been either good, or created some chemistry issues). Now, I’m thrilled. We look set to have a very good season, and adding Thomas just makes it that much better.

  • AmaGoh7 says:

Great ! Oh, wait, did the NCAA rule in OU’s favor ? lol ! Guess this is basketball and not football. We’ll take it !

  • Sooner Ray says:

The team looked pretty good in their win today, especially Buddy going 7 for 7 on three’s.

  • Super Keith says:

Our boys looked good today in the opener….especially Hield (25 points, 7 of 7 from 3). Getting Thomas for the season is going to be HUGE!

    • boomersooner says:

yeah buddy. 7 for 7 is hard to do from the line for some folks and nobody is playing d. big test coming up wednesday

  • Stephen Dale says:

It never hurts to add a transfer with proven scoring and rebounding prowess ; however, he looked ‘rusty’ today. It will take a few games to get in sync with his teammates. glad to add another big guy to a team that can use his talents to become an even stronger team…
