Open Post | Will Johnson Commits

– Have received confirmation from JUCO CB, Will Johnson that he has committed to the Sooners!

Want to note that Johnson does have 3 years to play 3. He is also a December grad so he will compete for a spot this spring.

– Was also told by his mentor that, while he did not commit, Ezekiel Turner had a great time.

We will make this an Open Post in case there is other recruiting news today.

    Any thoughts on Johnson?

  • Sooner Ray says:

Good to hear. A position that could use the help.

  • L'Carpetron Dookmarriot says:

Will looks good. Speed and agility to plan man coverage. Seems like a nice combination of Julian and Zach.

  • Davey says:

Fantastic!! Welcome to Sooner Nation Will. We all wish you the best of luck!

  • James D-Space says:
  • Zack says:

Big time. I had a good feeling about him and turner. Need the jucos to stick together and bring in turner and Westbrook.

    • hOUligan says:

Did I see that Westbrook is visiting Tech next? and maybe Washington? Not sure if it’s just his personality but he didn’t look ‘happy’ in those photos.

      • Zack says:

Yeah Westbrook may still have visits. And I think it’s between us and tech for him but I was hoping the jucos would ride together here.

  • hOUligan says:

Welcome to the Sooner nation, Will!! With 3 years to play, has a chance to settle in and be an impact player. Nice pick up. Need Turner to commit now. More concerned about safety.

As said below, more concerned about LB depth and quality. Brainiacs…there are a lot of guys committing in Dec. Could someone put together a list of upcoming commitment dates? Here are the LBs still on the OU board and what little I know of possible commitment dates.

    Jefferson – Dec 19
    McNeal – Dec 19
McKee – Dec 21 (his Bday)
    Wheeler – ??
    DeBerry – ??
    Houston – visiting for OState??
    McGinnis – ??

    • Zack says:

      2 things
      1. McNeal is being recruited as an hback but teams think he will be a hell of a linebacker.
      2. Just ask gary for a list he keeps up with a lot of this stuff

      • hOUligan says:

Saw that OU was prolly recruiting McNeal as an H-back but as Jefferson’s stable mate at LB and all I’ve heard, would be good there, too. Maybe the pickup of Wood as an H-back/TE would allow McNeal to play LB if that is where he wants to play and he projects better there.

        And…what cha got, Gary!?

        • Zack says:

Whatever it takes to get both of those kids is fine with me. McNeal torched teams this year and is probably going to be a nightmare in college.

        • Gary Robbins says:

McNeal is a gifted athlete. Like you said OU wants him as a H-back. He has good size at 6-2/228. You could flip a coin as he is a very good wide receiver, linebacker, an excellent prospect for H-back. Both McNeal and Jefferson announcing on Dec. 19th will be interesting. Jefferson is leaning to Texas over A&M (52% to 42%). McNeal has 5 officials set up to A&M, Texas, UCLA, Alabama, and Miami (last one on Dec. 15th). McNeal doesn’t seem to have a clear favorite but Alabama seems to have a slight lead over Texas for him.
If OU was to get both of their signatures would be a miracle, to just get one would be unbelievable. Sad to say but the outlook is bleak.

    • Stephen Dale says:

the posters on the other site are panning Johnson as another kass Everett. Anybody know anything about this guy and does he have a chance to be a contributor or is he simply a ‘roster filler” ??? Second, does this indicate Mbanasor is looking elsewhere, too ???

      • Super K says:

Johnson has upside. He’s a longer athletic kid.

      • Zack says:

Great 2nd question…the answer worries me a little. But I don’t think the offer was an indication of mbanasor. And if pj is worried he needs to watch how Jordan Thomas plays because that’s what the coaches expected from Julian Wilson but like many of us wondered Wilson is not as fluid. Hopefully he doesn’t see Wilson’s limitations as some of his own

      • akryan says:

I doubt it says anything about Mbanasor. About 25 guys are in every recruiting class. Unless you’re a QB, you’re never going to be the only recruit at your position. I don’t think anyone can accurately predict if a guy will be a roster filler or not. 83 scholarship and another bunch of non-scholarship guys are on every team. Pure statistics dictate that most will be roster fillers. While the higher ranked a kid is, the more likely they are to contribute, football history is littered with highly rated busts and walk-on stars. So, while it’s not quite a crap shoot, it’s not an exact science either. Coaches don’t recruit anyone to be a “roster filler” though.

  • connie usa says:

At 6′ tall, he really is a “big” Johnson

  • Shelby is a Patriot says:

Yay a commit and it’s in the Secondary and JUCO. Awesome.

  • Zack says:

Is turner from Baltimore originally also? If so are we trying to make even more of an effort to get Baltimore kids? I like the area and it has a bunch of underrated kids in Maryland/Virginia

    • hOUligan says:

Turner is. Also that 2016 DE, Rahshaun Smith, from the same hs as Tapper. OU going coast-to-coast to bring em to the Sooner Nation.

  • soonerborn says:

I see that Lane has had a change of heart and his search is now back open.Any chance we still recruit him? How many CB’s we looking at taking?

    • Zack says:

I wouldn’t count on lane. From the way it’s looking he may have to go the juco route if that arrest hangs over his head too long.

    • hOUligan says:

Yeah. ‘Decommiting’ wasn’t really his choice it appears. No way of knowing the details at this point but Lane may have shot hisself in the foot and not get a power 5 schollie.

    • Indy_sooner says:

Yea, reading the last part of his statement implies that OSU rescinded his offer. Possible we dodged a bullet with this one.

  • kt-raida says:

Awesome news. Wish we could’ve gotten South (committed to ucla yesterday)

    • Indy_sooner says:

Yea. KLS was disappointing but I wasn’t that sursurprise. Cap’n obvious but LB situation is not looking good

  • John Garner says:

Great pickup at DB. I hope our next commit is a LB. That might start the ball rolling.

  • rphokc says:

……curious……why is this a great p/u at db other than the position……….he has a virtual mystery profile that is unrated and no offers…….out of hs, he had some very minor offers…..perhaps coaches got a trusted tip that this guy is real deal……tfb know anything?

    • Zack says:

He looks good on film but that is the point of a highlight film unless your name is will Sunderland.

But what I like about him is that he’s kind of stalky and appears to already play mostly cover 3 or quarters which is what we ask of our starting corners. I think a lot of people are getting caught up in the “we can’t play press coverage look at Wilson” but everyone forgets Wilson is basically a safety and they should have been playing Thomas over there all year or even taylor.
I think we would have been burned a lot less had the only change made from last season would have been starting Thomas or Taylor day one.

      • rphokc says:

thxs, but still curious why they’re using a valuable scholly on an unrated, unknown recruit with zero offers………perhaps found a gem or they sense recruiting a/o attrition problems, just speculation……..you live recruiting, what is your gut

        • Sooner Ray says:

I liked what I saw on the film that was posted on this site. I’m sure the coaches have seen much more. Based on the little I’ve seen I think he could make a run at a starting spot, assuming the current on campus corners don’t step up big soon.

          • Stephen Dale says:

given the lack of success in recruiting several positions , is it possible OU took the JC guy to fleshen out the roster at the CB spot ?

        • Zack says:

Well I think he’s unknown and because of that underrated. I think they’re trying to find a gem and I think they want a few jucos and HS seniors who can be here in the spring to start competing and try to have a better group of players. Also it sounds like others are calling PJ and it’s possible he’s buying into the scheme doesn’t fit. And I don’t think there’s anything wrong with jucos look at kstate they live off juco talent.

        • Zack says:

Also we may be reading too much into this because they do have some guys they redshirted that we’ve been told are pretty good

        • Stephen Dale says:

rph……….the staff took what it could get.

    • Super Keith says:

First, you always have to assume the coaches know far more about the recruit than a Hudl video and what the ranking services do, or don’t say. So, I’m sure they were comfortable enough to offer him.

On tape, he appears to have good closing speed and a good frame (I’m hoping K will post an assessment, as he’s the DB guru here).

Lastly, he appears to be a smart kid, and with 3 years remaining, there’s plenty of time to develop him (in a position that needs it).

We really won’t know much more until he’s been in the program for a while, but so far he looks like he fits the bill.

  • EasTex says:

And they said he was a great recruiter.
    /snort

  • rphokc says:

……did mcnamara get any pt sat……….

  • Sooner Ray says:

Did anyone see the Beckham catch? WOW!

    • Dr. Doobie says:

      Was absolutely SICK!!

    • EasTex says:

Just flipped over and saw the replay. Great catch, even better offensive interference.
Odell Jr is the son of Odell Sr who is from my old high school. Sr was a fantastic RB and the only thing he didn’t have was blazing speed. Sr married an Olympic medalist sprinter which is where Jr gets his speed from.

      • Sooner Ray says:

I’m guessing one of them had VERY large hands.

      • Gary Robbins says:

You are like Super K-as you both know a lot of people and have a vast knowledge. That’s good for me as I enjoy everything Sports. Or maybe you are like a 133 years old. Just kidding.

        • EasTex says:

          Ha!
          About half that age.
I also got a Monty Stratton and Yogi Berra autograph.
But about Odell Sr., he was prominently mentioned in the best selling book ‘Friday Night Lights’ when Marshall High beat Odessa Permian in one of the best high school games I have ever seen, 13-12. He went to LSU in 1989 and played during a dark time for Tiger football. I think he had three different coaches in four years, they had a hard time beating Vandy during that time period.

    • Boomer4life says:

      It was just….sick!

  • EasTex says:

Hunnicutt now has 437 kicking points and the all-time kick scoring record is 450.
With two more games to go he could take the record.

    • Gary Robbins says:

Can you imagine that, OU setting another record. Of course all the doubters would say it’s against inferior teams. Oh wait a minute-this is field goals and extra points. Must be the extra wide goal posts in the Big 12. Here’s hoping he does it.

      • EasTex says:

I feel for the guy after being so consistent all these years to have that bad couple of games. He would be on the verge of having the record with one field goal had he not missed those three kicks.
I thought the record was out of reach the past couple of weeks, but after scoring 14 against KU, he is back in the hunt.

    • Stephen Dale says:

hunnimuff would have 443 pt if he hadn’t missed the two ‘chipshots’ again KST that cost OU a victory the rest of team deserved.

  • Sooner Ray says:

I normally delete the coach’s show from the DVR after I’ve seen it, I’m saving this one.
If you’re not watching it, you should look it up. Samaje was the half time guest and if you didn’t already think he was an awesome person, all doubt will be erased.

    • EasTex says:

Watching it as it records, myself. I figure on keeping this recording for a while.

    • soonersd says:

Where can I find the coaches show? I live in San Diego but I’m home in OKC for Thanksgiving. Can I find this on a local tv station or should I be looking online? Thanks in advance!

      • Sooner Ray says:

It plays on Sunday evenings on Fox Sports South West channel. I’m not in the OKC area so I can’t tell you the channel numbers for different carriers. I believe sooner sports .com has a channel list on their site. The replay may also be on that soonersports website.

  • Daryl says:

One of the big discussions on here for a long time was the Baylor game. We all agreed with being frustrated by the 8 yard cushions by out DB’s. Which actually if you go back and watch several games it has been true; like Tennessee.

Back to my point is anyone not concerned that Johnson’s highlights are almost exclusively 8 yard cushion plays. The only really successful tape of him playing true man coverage is practice footage.

IMO we need lock down CBs not big huge tweeners like we used to play in the triple option football days.

TFB would love your feedback or insight on this.
