New JUCO Cornerback Target Visiting

Earlier this morning we reported that Oklahoma offered JUCO safety, Ezekiel Turner and that he will visiting this weekend for the OU vs. Kansas game. It would appear they aren’t done looking for immediate help in the secondary. I just caught up with Monroe College (JUCO) cornerback, Will Johnson and he informed me that he will be taking an official visit to Oklahoma this weekend.

Johnson has three years of eligibility left and can play all three years and is a December grad. An offer has not yet been extended but he said that the Oklahoma staff told him that they want to get a look at his size before offering. If all goes well it sounds like an offer will happen this weekend.

I haven’t had a chance to review his film but I liked the little bit I saw. Right away you can see he playing a cover 3 technique but doing a nice job of making it look like man and then immediately sinking and high pointing the ball for an INT. Money.

Interesting offer , I am curious as to his “football IQ”, in the MS defense it seems the DB have diagnose quite a bit, then react.

  • hOUligan says:

Interesting. Listed as 5’11 Calvert hs, MD, “caliber DB late bloomer” by one recruiting site. Also from MD like Ezekiel Turner. OU going after guys that can play a different system than some of the CBs already on campus?

  • Stephen Dale says:

It seems obvious the solution to the DB problems is not totally on campus; hence the JC offers and interest from the coaches. It could also mean they are unsure they will sign Mbanasor or any HS DB that might the talent to come in next fall and challange for immediate playing time. I don’t think we have witnessed the fallout from the disappointing season amongst the commitments YET. ….This late JC interests could reflect potential defections. Hopefully these new recruits have better football instincts, more quickness, and better ‘deep’ speed than some on the current roster.

    • Brad Warren says:

I think we’ll be fine. This class and next couple will get to enjoy all the upgrades. Mbanasor isn’t going anywhere. Relax. The sky isn’t falling just yet.

I like the offer, we just need depth but we need LB depth as well. I wonder if someone may convert? Also I liked what I saw from Jordan Thomas at CB Saturday. If he gets comfortable and cocky (and I mean that in the positive way that corners have to be) he could be great. He’s a little stronger than Zach but has more fluidity in his game, like I said, get cocky like Aaron Colvin and he could be a stronger Aaron Colvin.

Love seeing the highlight films today K. Had me looking for my cowboy clicker and my laser. Appreciate it my friend.

  • Stephen says:

Why aren’t we offering LB’s? Just curious.

    • Super K says:

I suspect some offers will come soon. My guess is Dwaine Thomas gets an offer in December when they go down to see him.

Will there be a list of guys visiting this weekend either on the weekend open post or under TOP?
With 3 juco guys on campus at positions of need I think fans should be a little more tuned in this week.

  • Chris Pedersen says:

So they whiffed on all the db’s they have on campus? Cant coach them up?

    • Zack says:

I was wondering the same thing about a guy like Tito and Marcus green (who was praised in camp) both may be better than we think.
Also I can’t believe Stanvon taylor can’t get on the field I think he’s pretty good

      • Super K says:

It is a concern to me as well Zack. I’m trying to suspend judgment though and just assume that it’s more about the fact that they can get a guy like this who is further along than a HS kid is but still get 3 years out of him. In other words perhaps he is taking the place of a HS CB they would be taking. Also, an offer still hasn’t been extended so we’ll wait and see. Someone also mentioned on twitter that maybe they want to get a look at his size to see if he could fit at safety. No clue if that’s the case but it sounded like a reasonable speculation at least.

        • Zack says:

I do like these new names a lot plus the kid from poly that y’all noticed awhile back. They seem to fit the scheme mike is trying to run. Even though I don’t really like this scheme.

          • Zack says:

I should say I don’t like the way mike is running this scheme. I think he has the personnel but he doesn’t trust them or he hasn’t given the right guys a chance to show what they can do.

      • Brad Warren says:

I thought Taylor would be playing some by now as well. Head scratcher.

    • DCinAZ says:

Either that or they’re expecting a few transfers during the off season.

  • Sooner Ray says:

I like this corner. He plays the way our corners should be playing now, up close and personal.

    • Zack says:

I like his feel for the game. He ends up running the route for the receivers and a lot of times beat them to the spot (they would change direction) but the ball was already out and ends up an easy int.

  • Zack says:

I will say the staff is looking under every rock…juco in NY??? Kind of impressed they’re looking that hard.

    • Sooner Ray says:

Impressed and worried. Do you think they are in panic mode because of the defensive performance this year? I wish they could find some LB’s under some of those rocks.

      • Zack says:

Yeah that’s true but I’m ok with it as long as their looking everywhere. I think they’re trying to be the first big offer for these late guys. Speaking of lbs what the hell happened to looking at Whitfield..I know he committed to Tulsa and he can have a good career there and still be relevant…just wish OU would have given him a chance.

        • Sooner Ray says:

I know most here really liked Whitfield, Tulsa got a steal. I guess Mike just didn’t think he fit the mold. I would have taken a chance on him just because he wanted to be here. Some local kids turn out to be special players even if they don’t resemble a five star coming in.

  • JB says:

I hope we are recruiting Justin Martin pretty hard out of NEO. He has offers from Oregon, Georgia, Texas, LSU, Miss St, Ole Miss, Nebraska, Florida, Tennessee…that’s the kind of player you want. Johnson doesn’t even register a ranking, let alone show up on either Rivals or Scout, suggesting he’s not on any major radars.

    • hOUligan says:

Read where the coach at NEO has UTenn ties and said Martin was ‘placed’ at NEO by UTenn and Martin is a virtual lock to go to UTenn. Still doesn’t hurt to put the offer out.
