Betting Favorite For The Florida Job

So Bovada has released their betting odds on who they feel are the most likely candidates for the soon to be vacant Florida head coaching gig. And the current favorite is a coach from the state of Oklahoma, but that coach is not named Bob Stoops.

Oklahoma State’s Mike Gundy has been installed as the betting favorite with 4-to-1 odds. Stoops, however, is included on the list with 11-to-2 odds. Here is the full list of their current candidates/odds:

Mike Gundy 4/1
Jim McElwain 9/2
Bob Stoops 11/2
Dan Mullen 11/2
Rich Rodriguez 7/1
Mike Shanahan 7/1
Steve Spurrier 8/1
Hugh Freeze 8/1
Gary Patterson 12/1
Gus Malzahn 12/1

My money is on Mullen. He already has ties, He’ll be able to bring in better athletes at UF, Florida over Mississppi, and there is no pressure to win now, but lots of talent. He’d be stupid to not take it. Pending his contract with MSU I see Mullen out.

    • Jordan Esco says:

From everything I’ve heard, Mullen isn’t a pleasure to deal w/ and the Florida AD is not his biggest fan. I don’t think Mullen is very likely at all, actually.

      • Boom says:

Outside of FSU, Gundy would love their nonconference schedule and only 8 conference games in the east. I bet he would rather have this slate than what he has today. From East, LSU and some other school.

        Missouri
        South Carolina

        Vanderbilt

      • Herman Bubbert says:

Sources at Florida say Mullen will not be considered.

    • EasTex says:

Mullen has already turned them down once and they hired Coach F-Bomb.
With what Mullen has built at MSU I don’t think he is leaving.

  • Easton says:

Are there confirmed reports of Gundy communicating with Florida or being communicated to by Florida?

    • Jordan Esco says:

Not sure how there could be at this point.

      • Easton says:

Interesting how good these guesses are without such reports.

        • Easton says:

Some of them are obvious, but Mike Gundy. That isn’t a top ten coaches name.

          • blaster1371 says:

I respectfully disagree. Gundy has done really well at OSU. This have regularily been ranked, have won the conference and are usually pretty dang competitive. I think they had one of the best teams in the nation the year they beat Stanford in the fiesta bowl.

          • JB says:

Agreed. Les Miles got that program jump-started, and oSu plays a weak-ass schedule year in and year out. They finally stepped out on a limb and put Florida State on there, but we’ll likely see them go back to Florida Atlantic, UTSA and Savannah State in the near future. They lucked into a combo of Weeden and Blackmon, both of whom wanted to go to OU, but neither got the offer and moved on elsewhere.

  • Cush Creekmont says:

Malzahn, Stoops, Spurrier are probably not interested, and Shanahan should not want to go college. Gundy and Rodriguez would be poor choices for Florida, so I am all for those two in order to keep Florida where it is. Patterson, Freeze, MacElwain would all be upgrades from the previous coach. I wish they would take Strong even though that would make Florida good in the future.

  • SoonerfanTU says:

Kind of hope it’s Gundy. Or Strong. Though rumor is they want an offensive coach.

  • L'Carpetron Dookmarriot says:

    I’m going with these.

    Bob Stoops 0.0
    Al Groh 4/1
    Dan Mullen 3.14196/1
    David Cutcliffe 9/2
    Ty Willingham 2/1
    Gary Gibbs 10/1
    Jim Harbaugh 20/1
    Chan Gailey 30/1
    Turner Gill 5/1

  • blaster1371 says:

Though he is a dork of the highest order, Gundy could do well at Flor-ida. Makes the most sense based on this list.

  • F1at1ined says:

What about Tim Tebow’s odds? heh. In all seriousness, Florida’s a great gig – they should be a sleeping giant just in need of the right coach to bring them back to promenence. They play in the SEC and have a great recruiting region.
It’s crazy to think at how Michigan and Florida are both struggling considering the recruitment they have at their disposal. I mean, our very own Jerry Montgomery landed them some huge fish in the short time he was there.

  • Doobie74OU says:

Yeah I think if Harbaugh and San Fran part ways then he jumps up to a 5 or 6 and 1 chance because of his success at Stanford. He runs a “SEC style offense” I also like the Gundy, Patterson calls. The downfall for Patterson may be he is a “defensive guy” and with the last two Florida coaches being “defensive guys” and it working out bad they will probably go Offensive with the next hire. Petrino may be a dark horse with the way Louisville is doing this year!

  • Soonerr says:

If one assumes they will go with an offensive-minded coach, I think Rich Rod makes a lot of sense. They could probably offer a salary close to Muschamp’s and get him. Gundy and Malzahn already make around $3 million a year.

  • Greg sparks says:

If Mike Gundy does go to Florida would he take his brother? What’s the odds on that?

  • Jeremy Phillips says:

Apparently Brian Kelly is getting a push…

  • Jordan Esco says:

As of the time of this comment, Bob Stoops is currently the betting favorite at 15/4. Gundy just behind him at 9/2.

  • Herman Bubbert says:

    Those numbers have changed …

  • JB says:

Rich Rod or McElwain would be my best guess (McElwain with the slight edge) for who would be most likely to get that job. Unless Bob finally decides that fourth time is the charm…

  • HoustonChiver says:

    I’ll bet Jim McElwain 😉
