BREAKING: Gabriel Campbell Commits to Oklahoma

Image via scout.com

Gabriel Campbell just let us know that he has committed to Oklahoma. The stud defensive end out of Yazoo City, Mississippi chose the Sooners over schools like Ole Miss, Alabama, Miss. State and others.

Coach Jerry Montgomery was able to pull the talented defensive end away from a Miss. State stronghold as he played at the same school as former Miss. State defensive end standout, Fletcher Cox.

BOOM.

    I like it….I like it a lot.

  • JaysSooners says:

Great news to end the day! Welcome young man! BOOMER!

  • Austin says:

    Jerry freaking Montgomery!!

  • Stephen says:

    BOOM!!

  • Perry Dickey says:

    There’s some BOOM!

  • Zack says:

Monty is the man. I nominate him coach in waiting

  • Swanny says:

Our Co-DC is getting it… Imagine if we had other position coaches on D like him!

  • Sooner Ray says:

Monty could recruit an Arab to Alaska!

  • Shelby is a Patriot says:

Awesome. We know Monty is a great Coach and recruiter; I can’t wait to see how he does as Co-DC. Though, I don’t know how much control he’ll have.

    • D Hunter Sanchez says:

We’ll probably see MS screaming at him at some point.

    • Tulsa Terry says:

Montgomery should coach linebackers and defensive line. He could integrate the front 7 into a cohesive unit. Satisfying results driven job will leave his suitors empty handed for a couple of years until we can lock him down.

  • hemisooner says:

Wow, that’s impressive job by JM

  • bmrsnr says:

    Is this it for DL?

  • Shelby is a Patriot says:

Nice to know we can go into Ole Miss/Miss St ‘s backyard and get a recruit. We’re still Oklahoma no matter what.

  • Shelby is a Patriot says:

Nice to know we can go into Ole Miss/Miss St ‘s backyard and get a recruit. We’re still Oklahoma no matter what.

  • JD says:

    Jerry Boom

  • Zack says:

Admin? I think that’s the first I’ve seen that instead of “brainiacs” but does tfb think monty is done for 2015 DL recruits or are neal and daniels still in play?

  • Ed Cotter says:

Great news! Let’s keep it going into February and NSD. BOOMER!!

  • BleedCrimson says:

I Love this site!!! I not only get all the news on OU Football, but get a football education!!! Best of all worlds…

  • Super K says:

Winning Gabriel’s commitment was probably the toughest of all the players currently committed just because of how things work in Mississippi and how difficult it is to take a kid from SEC country and in particular from a state where folks work against out of state programs.

    • Kyle Roach says:

Totally agree! Miss, Miss st, bama all wanted him and to pull that off..What a guy!

      • Super K says:

He also had to go against tremendous pressure in Yazoo City to not go to Miss. State and follow in Fletcher’s foot steps.

        • Kyle Roach says:

that’s awesome. And people acting like there’s more to come

        • Tom Turman says:

Mississippi, for all of the talent in that small state, should be better year in and year out, because they don’t let a lot of kids out of their state.

    • Indy_sooner says:

CocahM more than earned his keep. He’s gone head-head with the SEC and beat em’. He was a ridiculous hire and I am glad he is Co-DC

    • Mysterio1 says:

I love it! We are going to Win!

    • Boom says:

Reading between the lines, do they only let certain coaches in to see Gabriel. I’ve seen it where they block off some areas so certain coaches can’t make it in. Am I off base on this one?

  • JD says:

Kudos to Bob for the presser and announcement of Jerry’s promotion to reassure some of these recruits

  • Tom Turman says:

Now if OU can get 2 new hires that can recruit as well as Montgomery, Bedenbaugh and Gundy can, OU should again have the talent to compete for Conference and maybe National Championships.

    • Sooner Ray says:

      That’s what it’s all about.

    • Super K says:

OU needs three new hires on a particular side of the ball. And 2 on the other. Just sayin…

      • Sooner Ray says:

        Just say it!

      • Tom Turman says:

Well, I was just going by what’s been made official. I didn’t want to speculate on what may or may not come to fruition. But imagine a staff full of young hungry coaches that can all recruit. Shades of Bob’s first staff.

        • Super K says:

I’m not speculating. I’m just saying I personally want all those spots opened and then filled with better coaches…or more politically correct…more appropriate coaches for those positions. 2 are now open…hopefully 3 more will come open.

          • hemisooner says:

Is LB coach one of them

          • Super K says:

On the defensive side there are 4 coaches. I want 3 spots open and none of the 3 should be Jerry Montgomery haha

          • bmrsnr says:

Who are some DC’s you would go for that could keep current scheme? We have done quite a bit of investment on that side of the ball last couple of years. Would Lance Anderson leave the west coast?

          • hemisooner says:

Haha, coach viney would be a good hire dont you agree. CJ Ah you has NFL experience but havent heard anything about his coaching ability.

          • soonerbred4ever says:

super K have you heard anything on Boulware? Is texas trying to take him. I think he has done a pretty good job recruiting and getting a commit from the #1 combo kicker in country is going to be great weapon next year. The kid has a cannon for a leg.

          • Stephen Dale says:

K……………..couldn’t agree more but I don’t think is going to alienate Mike by firing him…I do not think BGB believes the program is more important than family…Kish & BJW on the other hand……………

          • L'Carpetron Dookmarriot says:

            A proper secondary coach, please!

          • Tom Turman says:

OK, I gotcha. I thought maybe you knew something that was about to happen. Tons of rumors flying around still, despite the presser from this morning. I would like to at least see BJW reassigned and Tim Kish be let go. I could live with Mike still, as long as the other defensive coaches were strong and Mont gets to have input into the defensive scheming. I would also like to see Bob be more assertive on both sides of the ball, but especially on the defensive side.

          • Doobie74OU says:

Just from reading some of yoir comments I would have to think the 3 you are wanting replaced would be Kish, BJW, and the Co man himself Mike Stoops cause you hate the passive style they play!

      • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Durkin gone right? Any DC have a flight booked for Norman?

  • nisakat2 says:

did he really have an offer from bama??
    some sites say 3 star

  • Tom Turman says:

6’6 250 lbs coming out of high school. Get him in the weight room and bulk him up to 270 and now you’re looking at an SEC-type of DE.

  • leatherneck1061 says:

Wow. This year marks the first time in a long time we have actually beat Bama for any recruits that I can remember. What goes on here?

  • Fear The Magic says:

Woah Monty is named co DC and within 8 hours had a Big time DE commit. BOOM BOOM BOOM.
Campbell and Gallimore both. Gotta love it.

  • leatherneck1061 says:

Dave, Joe, and Bob better do whatever it takes to keep JM here. One of the only signs of life on this team.

  • Shelby is a Patriot says:

Okay, who’s next? I know Monty ain’t done.

  • hemisooner says:

Where does K Mann fit in K? Nevillle and Gabe at DE and overton at NG, does Mann play OLB ala Obo.

  • Tom Turman says:

I just hope the new hires are home runs like Montgomery and Bedenbaugh were 2 years ago.

  • Jerry reid says:

With so many DL recruits the past 2 years we better be going to a 4-2-5 defense. That will help us with the spread

    • SoonerinLondon says:

With difficult decisions like this, I like to think “what would Gary Patterson do?”

    • hemisooner says:

      Not happening

      • Jerry reid says:

Why do you think it won’t happen? Just wondering?

        • JD says:

Because we did that a few years ago and it failed miserable against the run and running qbs

        • hemisooner says:

Well, deberry is a pass rusher and he fits a 3-4 better. Same thing with Obo and Bond. Those guys are not big enough for 4-3 de and they not adequate enough for LBs in the big 12 bc of the passing game. They rush the passer. That’s what they do best

        • blaster1371 says:

Jerry, with the 3-4 I think it’s assumed that anyof the outside linebackers can drop down on the line of scrimmage or to set the edge against the run or pass rush, cover the flat. Most outside linebackers are bigger than the inside guys. Think of it as giving the DC more versatility going with the extra linebacker than having a fourth D lineman. I think the 3-4 scheme does cause problems in fining striker a position as he is a little to light in britches to be a true outside LB but is so dang good of a rusher and coverage he can’t be kept off the field.

Not trying to sound like a know it all. Just addressing your question.

    • Super K says:

Spread can be defended with the 3-3-5. In fact most coaches in Texas HS moved to the odd front in order to combat the spread despite the fact that Coach Patterson’s defense has been taught for so long around here. Charlie Strong was running a lot of odd front attacking style 3-3-5 against the spread. It starts as an odd front with our alignment but at the snap it shifts to an under front and any of the LBs can fill. I’d like to see OU be multiple up front personally.

      • Jerry reid says:

        Ok

      • JD says:

apologies for saying you were vacationing Italy right now

      • Kyle Roach says:

do you think 3 4 is that good for us? Just saying the secondary was insanely disgusting! i know that’s BJW and Mstoops responsibility but they looked confused all year.

      • Herman Bubbert says:

Good summary. Believe you’re right on – especially with the need to be multiple.

      • Boom says:

Thanks for clearing the air. So many think the 4-3 is the best and will cure all our ills. This may be true in some conferences but it’s different in the B12.

    • John Garner says:

Yeah, if we play it with the intensity that Patterson instills in his TCU kids.

    • William Ryan says:

If I recall that was the defence we ran in 2000 with roy williams playing lb in the championship game

  • paganpink says:

6’6″ and 250 pound Gabriel Campbell!? SWEEET. Welcome to the SOONERS, young man!

  • cush creekmont says:

Very nice! Welcome young man to the Sooners! Past my bedtime, but I had to appreciate this news and Coach M’s great work.

  • Fear The Magic says:

OU was like # 32 on Rivals about a month ago and right now we’re up to #15.
As for average stars per recruit we’re even higher. Ahead of OSU, Auburn, Texas, ND etc etc etc. This is turning out to be a really good class.

  • Brian says:

I actually read that Campbell is closer to 6’7″ and 275…DANG!

  • bjwalker82 says:

    Monty is a beast.

  • Chris White says:

I hope Monty talks Mike into going back to the 4-3.

    • Sooner Ray says:

I hope Monty tells Mike to sit down and shut up.

    • cush creekmont says:

I hope Coach M says Mike was a great inspiration and that he is really going to miss Mike because Mike is taking that new job.

    • Thomas Lenard says:

I said yesterday, and I’ll repeat, I believe Mike is a lot better 4-3 coach. That is what he knows, that is what he did, that is what he played. I do not believe the 3-4 was ever Mike’s idea (but I could be wrong on this). I’ve heard it was a move due to neccessarry (or lack of) personell. We have by far better D-Lineman than LBs at this point. I hope we see the 4-3 back if MS is back. If MS is not back, then let Monty run what he knows best.

  • Dustin says:

Read this and woke up the entire house with a, “Woooooo!!!!” This is the one I’ve wanted all along. My favorite commit this season.

  • Doobie74OU says:

TIME TO GET A FEW OF THESE NEW RECRUITS TO DO A LITTLE RECRUITING FOR US! COUPLE PHONE CALLS, TWEETS, OR TEXTS COULD GO A LONG WAY TO ROUNDING THIS CLASS OUT! I’M HOPING WARIBOKU IS NEXT OR A LB!

  • Mason says:

Just more proof that JM is one hell of a recruiter! Glad Bob gave him a promotion, but didn’t through him into the fire like he did JH.

  • NoahPinion says:

Kendrick Perkins is that your son? Seriously, Monty is reeling em in left and right. Great job!

  • Jeremy Phillips says:

Is OU an option for Levenberry ? Saw that he’s transferring from FSU & we finished 2nd for his services originally..

  • SoonerGoneEast says:

    122nd!

  • SoonerGoneEast says:

    Awesome!

  • EasTex says:

I remember when Monty was first hired his resume didn’t really wow anyone, but most thought he would be an improvement over Shipp and he did have a reputation as a good recruiter.
I think Monty deserves credit for being a tireless and successful recruiter, as well as for being an excellent position coach. With his new title/duties he clearly is ready to move to another level.
I also think Coach Stoops deserves credit for making an outstanding hire. Whether it was good judgment or good instincts, hiring Monty was a brilliant move.

    Welcome to OU Gabriel!

    • SamSooner says:

EasTex, I agree. My brother’s quote: “It’s not the loudest voice or the softest voice that gets to the people. It’s the clearest voice.” Monty is a great communicator. He had me when he said this ” effort, toughness, and technique are three things that don’t require talent.”

    • Doobie74OU says:

I think Coach Monty has a shot at the recruiter of the year ward due to all his hard work!

    • Mysterio1 says:

Kind of reminds me of Bob Stoops. I remember when he was hired, but a KSU grad told me that you’re getting a real gem. Oklahoma will turn around.
I get mad at Bob, but I do still believe.

  • SoonerfanTU says:

    Monty is on fire!

  • Jim says:

well good morning to me!!! BOOMITY BOOM BOOM BOOM!!!

  • sooner44 says:

    thank you Monty!

  • John Garner says:

Wow, Monty is earning his pay. Good to see us rebounding in recruiting. Was worried we’d fall short of our needs after last season. Two great hires on the O side of the ball and we could be back kicking some ass next season. I am friggin’ motivated. Thanx Coach!

  • Jeff says:

Any way OU can get Levenberry to transfer to OU?

    • EasTex says:

I find it revealing about you, this is a thread celebrating a much sought after recruit and the hard work done by Coach Monty.
What do you do? Change the subject without even a cursory Welcome Gabriel or atta boy Coach Monty about some LB that couldn’t even play at OU until 2016 if he did transfer.
However, when there is a thread with much groaning and whining you are right there egging it on, claiming the program is in ruins and the sky is falling.
I find your support of OU football dubious, at best.

      • rphokc says:

geez etx……..all he did was ask a quesiton………..

      • Tman says:

Chill out man. I also would like to know if OU can get Levenberry. You sound like a grumpy old man.

        • EasTex says:

This is your third comment here.
Interesting that you would chose this one to reply too.
          You sound like a sock-puppet.

          • Tman says:

Why does it matter how many times I’ve commented. I find it interesting you got mad he asked a question? Something wrong personally there Tex?

          • Tman says:

So I’ll ask again… Jordan? TFB? Heard anything on Levenberry?

          • EasTex says:

Did you actually read my comment to him?
            Comprehend, much?

          • Tman says:

Yea, I read it. It was a crap post and I called you out on it. Obviously i wasn’t the only one that shared this opinion.

          • EasTex says:

If you require support for your sock-puppet ankle-biting, check the number of votes that comment received.
            Thanks for playing.

          • Tman says:

I think you need to take step back from board here man. You live here. This is why I don’t post much. Wackos like you. The man asked a legitimate question and you derided him for it. You should go to the Rivals board. You’ll be a hero over there. That’s all that board is.

          • EasTex says:

I feel so special, you’ve made seven posts here and five of them are for little old me.
Once again, your lack of comprehension is the problem, not what I said.
I’ve been posting here for over a year and you blow in here as an ankle-biter telling me where I belong?
            Once again, thanks for playing.

          • Tman says:

explain what i am not comprehending…. Because it isn’t hard to comprehend. Anyways, I know you spend all of your waking hours on this board. Which is quite telling about you. This is my last comment here. Just defended a guy for asking a legitimate question. That is all. I apologize everyone. Have fun with EastTex littering this board. I have things to do beyond this board.

          • EasTex says:

            Thanks for playing.

  • SamSooner says:

I’m glad Monty has a bigger role in the defense. I think these kids will go through a brick wall for Monty. He has “it”. I think the players will play hard for him. I can’t remember which NBA player said it but I know it was said: when asked about the team’s effort for those who played with Dr. J, it was said: “we don’t play hard because of him, we play hard for him.”

My friends, that’s the ultimate compliment anyone can ever hope for. This team will play hard for Monty. Watch and see.

  • James D-Space says:

    Monty doing some serious work!
    God bless that man!
    BOOM!!!!

  • BleedCrimson says:

I can see JM being a great HC in a short time. Smart, work ethic is fantastic, and relates with the kids, and losing is not an option. I hope that he will still be a Sooner when he gets that chance.

  • Exiled In Ohio says:

JM is beginning to rank up there with Mrs. Selmon for bringing the big guys to OU! Ok, maybe he hasn’t reached that sainted status!

  • Malicong says:

Didn’t see this until this morning. A very welcomed surprise! I don’t think some people really grasp how big of a deal this committment is. In the state of Mississippi, only one of the top 14 high school recruits is leaving the state and that one is Gabriel Campbell.
Welcome young man, hope you love your time in Oklahoma!

  • Dlee914 says:

    Wheres Denzel at though? 😉

  • ToatsMcGoats says:

Welcome, Gabriel! We love you, Saint, er, coach Montgomery!

  • Indy_sooner says:

    YESSIR!! Welcome Mr Campbell.

  • DCinAZ says:

Monty wasn’t kidding when he asked or “patience”.

    BOOM

  • BJ says:

This is really cool. Gabe is a good kid, during his official he was really personable and comfortable in just being himself. He had a good time talking about his hunting stories to the other parents and recruits. JM is a really good recruiter, he has a laid back upfront approach. If a kid is interested, he is all in and will travel non stop to land a commitment. He’s also able to communicate well with kids from all walks of life. I think there may be at least one more big pickup for OU before signing day. Solid class so far of kids who can come in and contribute right away.

  • soonermusic says:

Very impressive. Maybe Monty could recruit a couple of spectacular wr’s in his spare time as well..:-) I can’t help but think JM’s performance on the recruiting trail is gonna eventually pay dividends elsewhere on the staff as well, in that whoever is there is gonna feel like they need to/better step up in order to be competitive. He’s setting the bar in a great way…

  • Doobie74OU says:

Odd morning for TFB to be so quiet! New Recruit late last night! All the coaching news that went down! I was SO READY FOR A UP BEAT OPEN POST TODAY! I guess the fact that my left leg won’t stop shacking means I have a problem, I must be hopelessly addicted!!!

  • hOUligan says:

Monty is a 1 man recruiting machine. Apparently he is so genuine with the kids and families. The Gallimore family trust him. DeBerry SR said Jerry is ‘powerful’. Campbell said the same thing. Coach Monty is building more than an all-star D line. He is building a family that will run through walls for him. “Jerry’s Kids”!!

  • DCinAZ says:

I know TFB has touched on “recruiting issues” over the course of the last year and addressed what they feel are some of the issues that we’ve been facing on the recruiting trail that seemed to have merit. I’d be interested in what you gentlemen feel about those issues currently with respect to the unimpeded success that Monty and Bedenbaugh seem to be having.

Basically…..revisiting those recruiting issues in hindsight…..do you guys think that perhaps “effort” might have played a bigger role in some of our recruiting issues of the past? Monty and Bedenbaugh don’t seem to be having any problems and they’ve succeeded in showing a clear delineation between themselves and the rest of the staff on the recruiting trail. Thoughts?

  • hushnpa says:

    Monty for President ! 🙂

  • Hotrod33 says:

Was not expecting this anytime soon. It just shows that with the right guys in place we are getting some really good players in. This could be a really good class. I can’t wait to see how these players develop. This class is starting to take shape.

  • Carl Carter says:

    Monty is the goat
