Joe Mixon Note (UPDATED Monday, 6:42 am)

We spoke to a couple people this afternoon about the Joe Mixon situation. Here is what we have been told:

– Mixon was cleared by compliance and unless there are further developments, he will be allowed to remain on the team.

– Mixon has occasionally been at practice watching, but not participating. He still works out on his own, but he hasn’t been allowed to do much more beyond that.

– We’ve been told Mixon will be redshirted this year and that an announcement could come as early as this week.

UPDATE (Monday, 6:42 am): After speaking to another sourceĀ this morning, we want to clarify a couple of things. Our original note on Joe Mixon should NOT be taken as an implication that punishment set by the university would be a required redshirt. The punishment has not yet been dealt. We are being told Joe will redshirt based primarily on the number of gamesĀ he would be expected to miss via some type of suspension.

– Also, we were told that as of now Joe Mixon intends on staying regardless of what punishment is set by the university. But that could obviously change as things have yet to be officially finalized and people can always change their mind.

Glad to see he can remain with the team. Sucks that one ignorant person could cause him so much grief. Hopefully he has learned his lesson and becomes a stronger person after this.

    • thebigdroot says:

I think both parties are at fault in this incident. Your use of the word ignorant is the wrong discription. I feel it would be best for all of us to remember we are adults and our actions also define who we are. I’m not taking sides, I just want to remind that there is two sides to this.

      • ohiosoonerdevildog says:

Disagree the word ignorant is the wrong word to use. When you make racial slurs and slap someone to provoke them that is ignorance. Not saying what Joe did was right by any means. But you can only push someone so far.

        • L'carpetron Dookmarriot says:

Ignorance means without knowledge. If someone is making slurs that relate to someone’s demographic group membership or some other type of group membership, then perhaps they are racist.

      • thebigdroot says:

This is a free country, well for the most part, and you can call it whatever you want. I don’t think ignorance was/is applicable when you knowingly use a slur to belittle or antagonize (sp?). That’s just my opinion. I’ve said very little about this situation. Personally I don’t condone hitting a woman and my blood boils at the thought. At the same time I know women who although smaller than me know how to hurt a man and although I would try not to hit them, if they were coming at me I know that I would have to fight back because they could serious damage. Throw in the fact that this person could destroy my future, whether it be football or my current position. It’s a slippery slope and one that each person will judge differently. We should tread lightly and be thoughtfull of the complete picture.

      • blaster1371 says:

I agree. My Dad would have said “if you only kept your mouth shut and just gone on your way” followed with ” and what the heck were out that late for?”

  • DCinAZ says:

Good! Redshirt him and let’s move on. He’s lost too much by not being able to participate in fall camp anyway.

  • Kuzi says:

Any idea when he can start practicing again?

  • herewegosooners says:

I think it’s a good call to redshirt him. Between Ford, Ross, and Perine our backfield should be set. Hopefully Mixon moves on from this and stays at OU.

  • lebval15 says:

Hope he sticks around and takes the redshirt instead of leaving.

  • Jason Vos says:

Hope he stays and realizes OU didn’t abandon him and really went out on a limb for him. But if he decides to leave OU will always recruit another top flight running back to take his place.

  • ellisbr says:

is there any chance he leaves? hopefully he’ll want to stick around and prove himself but I’d completely understand if he decides to go elsewhere and just get away from all of this.

  • JrsySooner says:

I love you man awesome news what are your thoughts does he stay or does he go

  • Stephen says:

Any chance he has a breakout mid to late season?

  • D'Brickashaw Ferguson says:

I’m very surprised at the “redshirt” news. I figured 3-4 games would suffice, but Stoops, Boren, & Co. know what they’re doing. Our RB unit next year (as it stands) would be:

    1- Keith Ford (Junior)
    2- Alex Ross (RS Junior)
    3- Samaje Perine (Sophomore)
    4- Joe Mixon (RS Freshman)
5- Rodney Anderson (Freshman, if he keeps his verbal)

It’s exciting for us OU fans…but if I’m Mixon, I’d look to transfer so maybe to get playing time. Hate to say that, too, because Joe is a stud. Wish the best for him.

    • Big Higg says:

      That’s a good stable

    • blaster1371 says:

Couple of redshirt freshmen or sophomores missing (Brooks and ______) from that list.

    • Rees Bear says:

What do you mean you’d look to transfer to maybe get playing time? If he transfers, he sits a year- same as if he red shirts here. If he sticks it out, the RS could always be pulled, you never know.

IMO, his best bet is to stay put. Hopefully his parents and his OU family are stressing that this is a test of his commitment and resolve and that his character is capable of withstanding adversity- to not just run to a path of least resistance.

A great growth opportunity for Joe.

  • Cincysooner says:

My thoughts are that he will be transferring to another school. Especially, closer to home. He already made comment on his twitter page back in early July of how bored he was here. You really think he will stick it out here another year without being on the field. I just don’t see it.

    • Daddy R says:

Well if he transfers, he sits regardless.. Would love to see him stay.

    • blaster1371 says:

That was very early in his arrival in Norman. I read somewhere, probably here, that a few weeks later he was good to go. Many a young man who is far away from home gets that homesick-what-did-I-get-myself-into funk. It passes.

      • B.R. says:

He also recently became good friends with Will Sunderland (assumed to already be an OU commit if not a strong OU lean)

  • Bob Edwards says:

This makes sense. He has missed all of fall practice and may miss more until things are settled. That’s awfully hard to overcome for a true freshman. He probably would not see playing time till mid to late season. Why waste a year of eligibility for that. It also lets the administration “suspend” him for a year and look like they mean business.

  • Super K says:

For those of you asking about whether he will transfer…we can’t say for sure. But we’ve been told is that the family wants him to stay.

  • Big Higg says:

Would like to see him stick it out. Gut tells me he will transfer…hope I’m wrong!

  • J J says:

It honestly wouldn’t hurt him to RS & focus on maturation & placing this behind him.

    • EasTex says:

      Where art thou, road warrior?

      • J J says:

        St Louieeee šŸ™‚
I must say it’s been a great road trip.

        • EasTex says:

          Glad to hear that.
Just be mindful of exactly where you are while in that area.
          /just sayin’

          • J J says:

Yeah, am staying at hotel at the stadium. Valet. Executive/concierge floor. I have no reason to get out šŸ™‚ we will get out tomorrow to go to Grants Farm. That’s it.no reason to leave the hotel lol

          • EasTex says:

            Sounds like y’all are golden.

What an odd hyperlink in your comment.

          • J J says:

No clue about the hyper link.
It’s been a fun trip so far. The boys saw a car with an Aggy sticker on it at the Corvette Factory/Museum. They were being hellions (ags) were some of the cars were open & the little one busts out with “leave it up to an Aggy to ruin everything”

          • EasTex says:

Where you typed “That’s it. no” there is a bizarre hyperlink in a foreign language.
Edit: had to remove that from my reply as it did the same thing. Go to edit and put a space between the . and the no.

Isn’t the Corvette Museum in Bowling Green? Bet that was fun, except for the Aggies.

          • J J says:

Yes, it Bowling Green. It was fun. Selling my corvette was a sad day… No room for lol ones. BG broke up drive to Loyisville, it’s not quite 1/2 way from Nashville

          • Cam says:

You were in my part of the country! Did you enjoy BG and Louisville?

          • J J says:

I had never been to BG, it was pretty cool.
I am in & out of Louisville & Lexington atleast twice a year. Love the area, love it! I’ll be back in Oct for 3-4 days.

          • Cam says:

BG is my first love and a fabulous place to live. And Louisville has a never ending supply of hole in the wall restaurants and shops.

          • J J says:

Yes, both places are very unique!

          • soonermusic says:

the hyperlink thing is most likely something in your browser, ET. Check your preferences and “extensions” or whatever they’re called in the pc world and see if you accidentally downloaded some adware.

          • EasTex says:

            Don’t think so.
I duplicated what she typed in her hyperlink and got the same result. It was the sequence of “it” with no space a “period” with no space and “no” that created the hyperlink.
            Very odd.

          • soonermusic says:

Yes, but if you’re the only one seeing the link, it’s probably your browser causing it. Doesn’t matter if the typing comes from you or the internet. gophotoit or something like it is a likely candidate. I see no hyperlinks in her post.

          • EasTex says:

She edited it to include the space after the period, hyperlink is gone.

  • EasTex says:

Tomorrow will be one of the most important dates in Joe’s young life.
He will be turning himself in to the authorities with his attorney present, but he will still need to be processed (prints/photo) and entered into the criminal justice system.
Think about that for a moment, a young man that will forever remember his 18th birthday as an unhappy and life altering day, will have gone through three weeks of angst and uncertainty culminating with the cold experience of being processed and facing a Judge.
I wish nothing but the absolute best for Joe, as a person first and as a Sooner second. Whether he decides to remain at OU(and I sincerely hope he does) or not is a decision he must make and I hope he gets good advice from people he trusts and have his best interest in their hearts.
Having been a young man once, I can look back and see that I should have done many things differently. I would imagine Joe has already replayed the incident in his mind a million times and wishes he had acted differently. Hindsight is always perfect vision.
I hope Joe remains strong through all of this, is embraced by Sooner fans and that his future is filled with happiness and good health.

    • JrsySooner says:

I’m going to take a minute and comment on what you just said….
pretty much everybody tried and convicted him and sent him off to Vietnam…
I applaud him for choosing to stay in Oklahoma for his 18th birthday instead of going back to his family in California…sadly the State of America intervened in his life……I hope he realizes this could have happened anywhere….I have never really wish ill will on anyone but I truly hope this woman gets whJat she deserves…at the same time maybe this is a wakeup call for her and God’s Way of reaching out..
Ive watched joe since way back,…..I was constantly in California since my son went to Stanford and Northridge…..I’m a high school football junkie…I’ve seen big Q here in New Jersey listed Oklahoma as one of his favorites….for the most part Oklahoma asociates itself with quality people look at Stoops track record…..this is the way things are in America 2014…one day this will be an answer on Jeopardy or comical sidebar in a pub in Okc….

    • soonermusic says:

Summed up very nicely. Well put, ET…

      • EasTex says:

        Thank you.
Actually had those thoughts over the weekend while reeling in a bunch of Crappie.

    • whodat59 says:

He should have thought about all this before. Chances are, it’s happened before. I don’t feel for him at all. If he gets his life and act together, good for him.

  • Buster Rhymes 4 says:

Hope he stays, but I can see him wanting to put this behind him. “DON’T GO JOE!”

  • PLAW0720 says:

For the life of me, I don’t understand how Molitar walks free. By all accounts she used a racial slur and physically assaulted JM. She should also be charged with misdemeanor assault at the least or a hate crime at the most.

    • connie usa says:

I don’t think it’s illegal to utter a racial slur. As for hitting him first, I think she should be charged with that.

      • B.R. says:

Actually if she said the n word and then assaulted him, it could be classified as a hate crime I believe

  • Cary Newman says:

If the redshirt information is accurate, it tells me the penalty this season would have been in excess of four games. I also hope Joe sticks. Will be better for him in the long run.

  • SoonerfanTU says:

The possibility of a transfer worries me too. You have a kid that was unhappy being in Norman (or away from home) just a few weeks ago, and he thought he had football games worth sticking around for. Now, it’ll be 12 months from now before he sees the field in a real game. I know it’d be the same if he transferred, but it’s probably easier to sit when family is just down the road, then it is several hundred miles away.

Not to mention, he’ll likely be behind all three guys (Ford, Ross, & Perine) next year. When this year, he had a chance to jump them on the field, as none of them have much experience.

I trust Bob, and I hope this works out for the best. I was really excited to see what Joe could do on the field.

    • blaster1371 says:

Not saying what you posted isn’t plausible but to say Mixon would be behind those three you mentioned makes the assumption they will perform up to expectations. Most figured Mixon could have/might have pushed for playing time as a true freshmen. Ross and Ford show considerable potential but that has yet to materialize. Mixon chose OU for a reason and with his parents blessing. I think he stays at OU for all the right reasons.

      • SoonerCindy says:

I agree, he just comes across as committed to the program. Too much has been made of some homesickness that all first year students go through. I believe that he will stay. I also believe that he has the potential to make some really great lemonade.

    • B.R. says:

If Ross has a good year, I think he heads to the nfl, opening up the spot for mixon

      • SoonerfanTU says:

I don’t think he’ll be draft eligible after this season, and I certainly don’t see him having a season that makes it possible, even if he were eligible.

        • B.R. says:

This is his third year (redshirt sophomore) yes he will be eligible but I agree that he probably won’t do enough to get drafted.

  • Fear The Magic says:

If hes redshirted but not suspended Im guessing he can at least play on the scout team.

  • Firelight says:

I didn’t realize OU had become so political and concerned with PC instead of just doing what is right. I’m disappointed.

I can understand a 3 or 4 game suspension but I think he transfers this fall if he is redshirted. He can have a fresh start somewhere else where this issue isn’t hanging over his head all the time and the local media isn’t trying to serve his head up on a platter every day.

    • blaster1371 says:

But with the grief Stoops has been getting over DGB, Shannon and Mixon I’m not so sure just any program would take him and this topic is fast becoming the big hoopty. Public image is probably more in mind than political correctness. Heck if that QB at FSU can do and be accused and have all the controversy it has generated AND still win the Heisman then Joe just needs to keep his nose clean and be a model citizen from here on out.

      • Firelight says:

No one outside of Oklahoma is talking about this.

        • ND52 says:

          Ohhhh yes they are.

          • Firelight says:

I live in Denver and radio and tv have not mentioned it beyond a small blip the day it was first reported. Other friends around the country have said the same.

Now people who hang out on sports message boards are a whole different thing but a very small minority.

          • ND52 says:

Not a huge story by any means but internet sites like SI and ESPN are carrying it.

          • Firelight says:

Like I said, people that hang out on sports message boards are different and a small minority. ESPN isn’t talking about it on air, it was a mention on their sports page online. National radio and TV isn’t talking about it. For that reason, I think Mixon could start fresh somewhere else and not have this hanging over his head.

However, I hope he does stay and I hope he isn’t redshirted.

          • EasTex says:

A couple I know who aren’t real football fans and they asked me about it on Friday. What little they knew was alarming as they understood it to be a vicious assault by him.
It’s out there and few will bother to follow the full story, just the headline.

          • Firelight says:

Here in Denver, our local sports radio is talking all about Brennan Clay. He has been controversial the first week of practice. Lots of fighting with the guys on the field to the point that Fox actually stopped practice to have a team talk. I’m sure some of it is hazing from the older players on Clay and Clay dished back and even started something with Inhenacho. The fighting continued over several days.

The radio guys talked to Clay and then about Clay and OU for hours and never mentioned Mixon.

          • EasTex says:

I don’t watch or listen to any local or national sports programs, so I have no idea what they are or aren’t saying. Having a couple of low information sports fans ask me about it and relating what they heard was disturbing. I should have asked where they heard about it.

          • Daddy R says:

I heard the local reports of the infighting, and Peyton’s displeasure with it, but I wasnt aware it was Clay! lol

          • Daddy R says:

I live in Denver too! Not a word nationally…

        • lovethemsooners says:

Whether or not it’s being covered in the “news” in other areas of the country, you can bet it’s being used by other school to negatively recruit against Oklahoma. So while potential recruits may not be seeing it on their local news channel or paper, it’s getting brought to their attention. Bet on that.

    • B.R. says:

If you are suspended for a year, you can’t transfer to another FBS school. If he isn’t suspended but they have told him he will redshirt, that would lead me to believe that he has agreed on the punishment. Remember, broyles redshirted.

      • Firelight says:

Broyles was a premeditated act. Mixon was a poor but legal reaction.

        • B.R. says:

Sure, but why waste a year of eligibility for a few games? Samaje is a beast, we will be fine. Mixon will get his shot

          • Firelight says:

I would agree if it was a few games but if he misses the entire season? After all the hate thrown his way, I just don’t see why he would stay but that’s just me.

        • EasTex says:

Regardless of what they were involved in, Broyles took that redshirt and became not only an all-time great Sooner, but also a NCAA record holder.
          Lemons to lemonade.

        • Krys Allen says:

Technically it wasn’t a “legal” reaction… according to the charges being filed.

          • Firelight says:

I see that you don’t quite understand the law and what he is being charged with. That is understandable considering how the Oklahoma media has reported this.

Mixon is NOT being charged for hitting Molitor. With this charge, the DA is admitting that Mixon was within his legal right to defend himself and his defense was not excessive.

This charge is Outraging Public Decency. What the DA is doing is telling Mixon he offended public decency because he is a guy and she is a girl and then the DA is holding Mixon responsible for her injuries (regardless of how she got them ie.. fist/table) but he is not charging Mixon for the actual self-defense.

It is a bogus charge but it is what it is because this is Oklahoma.

          • Krys Allen says:

Long story short… his reaction was not legal (according to the DA). If he would have defended himself with an open handed slap he (most likely) would not be in this trouble. Also I didn’t personally speak with Broyles, but I cannot assume his was premeditated. Maybe he filled his car up with gas, then realized he had no way to pay, got embarrassed and bailed.

I don’t see Stoops playing him this year, whether it is called a redshirt or not. My mind might be changed one way or another if the video gets released and we have a chance to see the incident and how fast it all went down.

  • Zack says:

I’ve been out of the loop this weekend…55 comments before I even get here?

I hope he stays it’s sad the circumstances that led this young man to miss out on his freshman year of playing. But I hope he looks at this in a very positive sense. That he can grow and mature, allow some of this to pass. One other thing is that he also gets to avoid taking any major hits for one year while he gets plenty of time in a college weight training program.

  • thebigdroot says:

One thing I’ve wondered about, if there was other OU players (from what I’ve heard there was) why didn’t one of them pulled him out of there at the first sign of trouble?

    • EasTex says:

      I’ve wondered the same thing.
I know several of my friends saved me when I was about to pound a guy that was just looking for trouble.

      • thebigdroot says:

Me too. When the testosterone blocks logic we need somebody to remind us that we need to walk away. Young and dumb, we’ve all been there.

        • paganpink says:

This guy was celebrating his 18th birthday. That is really, really, young, and this wasn’t a bar fight, nor was he drinking. I just compare that to my own equally testosterone laden foolishness when I was in my twenties (and possibly the strongest man, pound for pound, in America) and I am still struck by the fact he is just barely out of childhood. I feel for him, but as with everything else it will make him a better person if he lets it. I hope it ends up being a life lesson that keeps even worse things from happening later in life. And they should charge Molitor as well! Ahem.

          • EasTex says:

I will wait to see what happens tomorrow. I don’t think we can rule out he and his attorney might fight this, even if there would probably be a small fine and some community service if he doesn’t fight it.

          • paganpink says:

That is an interesting point because I had been assuming he would not fight it. The D.A. made it clear that he was more confident with this charge then an aggravated assault charge because that would bring in self defense and mutual combat which could be argued based on the evidence. I am not sure why those same things couldn’t be used as a defense for any charges brought against him, nonetheless.

  • Shelby is a Patriot says:

Well, I hate that he has to redshirt and the way all of this played out, but hopefully he gets through it and will be far more prepared next year.

  • Ed Cotter says:

I know that it has been posted before, by Super K, I believe, but Joe Mixon does not drink and he was not drinking the night all of this went down, correct? It has been assumed by many on social media that Joe had also been drinking to celebrate his birthday. When I state that he doesn’t drink they come back with, “You know that for a fact?” I wasn’t there, so I don’t know, but it would seem to me that witnesses would have known and something definitive would have been stated had he been drinking. Joe abstains from alcohol, correct?

    • Ed Cotter says:

I understand the fact that he will be redshirted to see everything through in regards to his dealing with this in court, and I hope he stays around. Painful learning experience, but am glad to see that the family wants him to stay in Norman. Hopefully he will finally be able to practice and be a part of the team and not on the fringe. Some posters seem to think it is a good idea for him to transfer, but we have seen how fast guys can see the field with one or two injuries. Mo Madu had a decent career as the #3 or #4 back for OU. Mixon is also one heck of a receiver, so don’t think it would be tough to get him on the field next year. JMO

    • Jed says:

he’d be something of an idiot to publically state anything to the contrary. So far as I’m aware, 21 is the drinking age pretty much across the country. So saying that you drink at age 17-18 is pretty much the same thing as stating that you’re a criminal.
Even among the (large minority, scant majority) group of kids who drink under age, most have the common sense to not say so.

  • soonerpeace says:

Word is the family met with Boren and Stoops and knew his fate depending on the charge. That was 2-4 games if a misdemeanor. Now if for whatever reason OU deviates from that assurance then although his Dad was adamant he stays all bets are off. I think if OU misleads the Mixon’s then they strongly consider not coming back. So if they think he is going to lose a full year they rethink things and he never plays a down here. Hope I am wrong.

  • paganpink says:

FWIW- Blevins just said on the Sports Blitz that he believes that if it’s a 6 game suspension then he stays. If it’s for a year he thinks he’s gone. He said something about Mixon’s attorney suggesting that was the case, or something, but wasn’t completely clear. Since the severe concussion that almost killed him, Dean garbles his words sometimes. He still knows almost everyone at OU that is involved in the decisions of course.

  • Doobie74OU says:

I hope he stays! I think it will show a lot about his character if he fights through this to succeed! He doesn’t have to look back very far to see that in 2011 Whaley burst on the scene and lead the team in rushing and the next year Williams did the same thing. Both those teams had proven contributers ( like Clay, Finch) but talent allowed them to pass people by on the depth chart. He brings enough diversity to the feild that he can still succeed at OU! The first time he has 200 combined yards and 2 TDS against Texas we won’t ever talk about this again! If it weren’t for some in the media that can’t find real stories to write it would die down by next year anyway but somebody will definately go for the cheap headline! If he leaves I would understand, but if he stays I will definatly be routing for him!

  • Tulsa Terry says:

A lot of rumors have turned out wrong. I see a 4-6 game suspension.

  • Dave Clouse says:

Joe sounds like he would be the type to take this and learn, man up to it and move forward not run from it. I expect him to do the right thing

I think a redshirt is a fair option for him, for more reasons than just the trouble he got himself into. We were already unbelievably deep at the RB position to begin with. I’m sure he’s going to be a great back, but kids like Ross, Ford, Brooks, and Perine have put in quite a bit of hard work over the last month. Work that Mixon hasn’t had to. I personally believe he should go the “Ryan Broyles” route. Stick it out, stay out of trouble, and end up an All-American by the time he checks out at OU.
